Kathy is one of those few in Hollywood with actual talent. It isn't about her looks or her eccentric lifestyle but actual talent. Take anything she's in and try to have someone else perform it and they'll never match.

One of my favorite stories by Stephen King. Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh just chew up the scenery in this film. David Straitharn did a fantastic job as the abusive father. To this day when I see him in other movies I immediately think of this performance. Stephen King once again proves he’s one of the greatest storytellers of all time.

This is my favorite King novel. There are a few supernatural elements in the novel that weren't included in the movie. Dolores has a vision during the eclipse that connects to Gerald's Game (another King novel) and Dolores and Vera seem to have a slight psychic connection at times. I highly recommend checking out the audio book read by Frances Sternhagen (the actress that plays the sarcastic Sheriff's wife/deputy in Misery) - it's just fantastic. There is also much more horror in the novel with Vera having terrible hallucinations and Joe not dying from his initial fall. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse I always dreamed of having a mother like Dolores Claiborne who would do anything to protect her children. Love your channel!

Both the book and the movie are understated masterpieces. Real literature that depends on the replaying of aphorisms in the light of memory and experience. Every event and statement is revised and replayed until the accident becomes the inevitable. Story not as a set of plot-points but the interpretation of a life. The detail of Dolores’ raw hands hanging washing out in the winter cold still stays with me after two decades. This is an Edith Wharton-level ordeal.

Ellen Muth, the actress playing young Selena is from my town in Connecticut. When the movie came out, she was signing autographs at a video store just up the road. I expected a bit of a crowd, but there were only a couple people there. I was nervous and couldn't really think of anything to ask her, but she was very sweet. I think I also passed her at the mall a couple years later, but by the time it registered on me, she had already disappeared.
Her father owned (or managed) the optometrist store where I used to go for my glasses. On one occasion, her brother waited on me. Which I only know because they had her picture up and when I asked if she was a customer, he told me that she was his sister, and that their father owned/managed the store.
She went on to star in the Showtime series Dead Like Me for two seasons, and one made for video movie.

Such a great film. The only thing I disliked was the ending, with Dolores apparently staying on that island where everybody thinks she killed her husband and now thinks she killed Vera Donovan (the police might've dropped the charges, but public opinion is a lot harder to change). She has nobody left and is hated and badmouthed by everyone there, including the children. Though I guess it's par for the course for a Stephen King story, with no real "happy" ending.

You, Me, & The Movies Thank you guys for reacting to this underrated gem. Seriously one of my all-time favourite movies. This and "The Mask of Zorro" I feel sooo bad for that they're not talked about enough. Both of them have great acting. Zorro had breath-taking sets n action as well as smashing emotional drama. Now this movie isnt known for big action n stunts like "TMofZ". lol of course not. It's waaay more of a character study indeed with past n present dramatic stories which Zorro had too.
Anyway, with this movie alone...it is probably my favourite Stephen King movie so far. I love Carrie from 1976 n Kubrick's The Shining as well as 1989's Pet Semetary, Stand by Me, Shawshank, The Green Mile, Doctor Sleep, and even the 1990 miniseries of IT. But God help me, "Dolores" screams out number 1 for me. Misery was also impressive as well. Kathy Bates is great in that one but my goodness is she really phenomenal in this one. Not too mention, Leigh is one of my all-time favourite actresses. The score to this movie is perfect and the editing n cinematography is unbelievable. I seriously dig its unique style of either being in the past or the present.
Please react to "Gerald's Game" on Netflix if you 2 havent already.

I remember loving how dark and moving it was, and how special it felt that my parents loved the same things I did and often ignored a movie’s age rating if they thought it was something I’d like 😅 the benefits of being the youngest, I guess.

No matter how brief or prominent
her appearances, no matter what genre
or forum & no matter who she's playing,
    Jennifer Jason Leigh frequently steals
the show. She's got quite an extensive,
    impressive filmography & has worked
with most of the celebrated directors in film--
    Paul Verhoeven
    Quentin Tarantino
    Amy Heckerling
    Ron Howard
    David Cronenberg
    Robert Altman
    The Coen Brothers
    Christopher Guest
    Todd Solondz
    She also co-wrote/co-directed & co-starred
in "The Anniversary Party" with Alan Cumming.

so good to see this reaction, Stephen King started out as supernatural to true crime stuff. the reference to a pet dime is a trick people used to do with a coin on a string to make a vending machine think it got a coin.

Another movie ( Thriller) to see if you haven’t is, “Single White Female”, starring: Jennifer Jason Leigh& Bridget Fonda.

We had pet dimes and quarters in the 80’s. The coin had a small hole drilled in, and a string was attached. You could insert them into a pay phone, vending machine, arcade game, etc. It would trigger the mechanism, then you would pull in back out by the string.

Hey. Love what y'all do. I like seeing the reactions to all of my favorite movies. Your patrions have great taste. I'm commenting to mention the "string on a dime". Reference. In some places in America, you had to pay a dime or a nickel to use the toilet stall. It's one of the reasons for the term "nickel and dimeing".

  • @411popCulturevideos

Gerald's Game. Dolores Claiborne is linked to Stephen King's other novel Gerald's Game (sorry if this has already been covered in the comments). But only the novels, the movies are only connected by the eclipse. For what it is worth, Gerald's Game was also an AMAZING film, and I think you would both enjoy that one, too. Seriously. Similar dramatic themes...but definitely has a little more horror in it. I am so glad that you both enjoyed Dolores Claiborne, though, as it is just such a good film. My best and I friend still quote ALL of her lines. And, if you keep going with Stephen King, PLEASE watch Cujo. Always enjoy your episodes!

I didn't look during credits, but I imagine the accents and location of the story place it in Maine. King was born there, and the characters had New England dialects.

This is my favorite King book and movie. Just one of his best stories.
I love everything about the movie. The acting, writing, music, and especially the cinematography. The transition between the drab almost colorless present to the bright vibrant past was genius.
Have you seen Apt Pupil? Another great horror of humanity story from the King.

This was a period during which King was writing quite a few novels about abused women. Dolores Claiborne, Rose Madder, Gerald's Game. All some of his best work, whose supernatural horror aspects are completely outweighed by the horrific acts committed by human beings.
