I absolutely love this show. It came out when I was 17 and aired until I was 23. During that time I went from a high school kid to a pothead to a college student to a mom. I went from being on Malcolms side to being on Reeces side to being on Francis's aside to being on Lois's side. This show means a surprising amount to me.
The way that every character managed to be comically over the top but also relatable just goes to show how well written the show was. Thanks for sharing your story!
That moment when Francis snaps after finally getting the apology he always dreamed of from his mother Lois hit me like a ton of bricks. The exact same thing happened to me in early adulthood but even worse. I felt nothing but emptiness from the apology too and nothing was learned. The cycle has continued with my nephew and his grandparents. I haven’t had kids yet, (that I know of at least) but my sister has a son and he is being forced down the same wrong dark path.
Same except i never got an apology from any of my abusers. That moment made me realize what good would it even do? The damage is done. How do i undo it? Just being left with the trauma is so difficult.
In my current stage of my life at the moment ive found myself relating to francis more since im at a stage in my life where im about to go out into the world alone
ive watched this show nearly once a year since 14 i find i learn something new each and everytime im gonna be 24 next month. Malcom in the middle has brought me sop much joy in this world
I almost exclusively watch old shows and movies I have already watched. I know every generation says the same thing - "TV, music and movies were better in my day", but honestly, modern media is a complete and utter mess.. Watching Malcolm in the Middle cannot be replicated by anything today. There may be better effects, complex plot lines, whatever, but this was just simple entertainment. I am sick of having The Message forced down my throat like I am on a casting couch... Just finished the whole video, this was good work man. Honest, fair and insightful. Well done. Subbed and liked.
Thank you! I think to some extent you're right. Every time period is gonna have shows, movies, books, games that are either timeless or perfectly encapsulate something from their respective time period. I personally think it's important to keep an open mind both for older and newer media as they both have a lot to offer, but I definitely find myself feeling nostalgiac a lot too.
i’m only 21 but i definitely enjoy rewatching “older” shows since some are just masterpieces (i.e. breaking bad) or “timeless” social commentaries (i.e. the boondocks, south park, etc.). but i respectfully disagree, there are definitely great modern shows out there now like abbott elementary or the bear. give it a chance if you can! you might like it
I grew up watching this show in the 2010s and every character is so unlikable but also incredibly relatable. It really puts into perspective the fact that you cant expect everyone to be perfect and you just have to learn to live with the flaws that come with being human. Now that i'm an adult im starting to realize the profound impact that growing up with Malcom in the Middle had on me. I was watching these characters go through the rough time that is life and I was learning so much about myself without even realizing it. Its one of the most relatable shows and every once in a while I go back to it because it reminds me that having flaws is normal and I shouldnt beat myself up for going through it but at the same time I cannot excuse any of the bad behaviors I exhibit. This is a truly phenomenal video that has put so many things into perspective for me and helped me realize the massive positive impact that this show had on me.
Its funny your thumbnail alone made me feel warm in the same way this show does. Growing up poor, you always get fucked over and life can get downright cruel. My mom and grandma lived as decently and honestly as they could and ive seen that cost them much more than its ever given them. This show made my life feel normal regardless of how bad things got, if we were completely broke and didn't have enough for food, this show probably helped me believe my parents when they said "we always work something out". Nice video man.
20:25 this scene shows just how much of a terrible mother Lois was to Malcolm. She’s expecting him to be the best president of America and placing her insecurities onto him.
Also i'd like to hear your opinion on episode "If boys were girls" it's my favorite episode and it was very emotional at the end when Lois was just running away and realizing that "there's no escape"
@@aynpain Sorry I saw this so late! I actually really loved that episode too. I thought the ending was more about Lois realizing that it wouldn't make a difference if she had all girls because at the end of the day every family dynamic is going to have issues, and she learned to accept the family that she had because even though they were flawed, they still loved each other.
Im borrrrred !! im borrrrrred !! Im itchy !! Im borrrrrred !!! Became a quote i use for the last 20 years when i actually am bored 😂😂😂 I love this show !
Great video!! I really like the show too. Even though Roseanne got kudos for showing a poor family, I think MITM is a better show. For me, there isn't the whining that Roseanne has, and everyone is very relatable. No matter the situation or dynamic, the family is always there for each other.
Thank you! And agreed. I think the MITM was very ahead of its time in the way it handled its characters and situations compared to other shows that either tried to do the same thing or came out around the same time.
This show didn't have a single bad episode. You could tell over the years the budget was dwindling, the cast of side characters kept getting smaller and smaller and sometimes the plots were getting outlandish (aka Hal finds a new hobby/job) but the episodes were still well written and fun to watch. It really holds up well. This series is great for language learning btw if you watch it in other languages because the characters talk like normal people and the focus is hone/school/work
brilliant video. loved this show as a kid and i love it now as an adult. great retrospective, always glad to see more people appreciating this work of art of a show. subscribed
As someone from England I'm always amazed that this show is American. Its cynical humour is very common in England but it's definitely my favourite show after AGOT.
I just started watching Malcom in the middle but a show I’m always reminded of when watching is “The Middle” which is very similar to Malcom’s theme and both are great shows with amazing comedy
This is one of my favourite sitcoms too. I feel I should point out that while it was early, it was not the first show to invert the typical sitcom theme. There are plenty of others that do the same and are as good as this one. Married With Children came before it, and you may not realise it, but The Simpsons is a sitcom too, it's just an animated one. M*A*S*H doesn't have the family dynamic, but it's still a sitcom. There are probably others that came before these too, but I either didn't watch them or don't remember them. For shows that came after Malcolm, there is My Name Is Earl and Raising Hope. If you like Malcolm, you will probably also enjoy these other shows I have mentioned.
True, my wording was a little off. I'm familiar with most of the shows you've mentioned, though I haven't watched all of them. (Love Raising hope and MASH though). Thanks for the reccomendations!
The family's last name is not Wilkerson, it's Nolastname. After the pilot they decided to nix Wilkerson to avoid an ethnic label, (at least according to some other video essay I watched) and in the last episode Francis's ID says Francis Nolastname, and when the principal introduces Malcolm for his valedictorian speech you can see that he says Nolastname even with the mic feedback.
from the episodes i've seen my favorite visual joke was in Boys at the Ranch. when they set off the fireworks, and wonder which one is the ginormous one, and then it goes off and nighttime turns into day
11:40 Same shit happened to me. Mom apologized for failing me. Didn't qualify it with how it was somehow someone else's fault. Just broke down and owned up to everything. It just made me feel bad for her and kept me from externalizing my anger.
First Jeannette mccurdy was in this show. And second yes we do need a president that’s came from a poor upbringing. Hopefully they’d understand and would help us poor folks,
I’m biased as hell to Malcolm because I was hyper fixated on the show, but that hyperfixation kinda made me make conclusions on why he’s kind of an ass. I think the only thing he’s ever had is being the smart one, and the thought of losing it, and having to find something else he can use differentiate himself scared him. Anyway im done nerding tf out
I completely agree, and I think it's almost the main point of Lois' speech at the end, about there being more to life than being the smartest person in the room. And don't worry, nerding out is always welcome here

The cycle can only stop through you
This was in my recommendations and I loved it. That Lois speech always gets me
Appreciate it man. I actually had a whole part for Lois' character, but I had to scrap it otherwise the video would've been like 40 minutes long
part 2? really good video 👍
@@geo-fy1my Thank you. Maybe I'll do a mini-follow up at some point, but I've got some other videos I want to work on first.

Lois death-growling “your room… N A A O O O W W” still haunts me to this day.
Ngl the Lois apology scene broke me

Spectacular video
This is a fantastic show!
Chad's Sleepover was actually before Reese bombed his finals. So it's still Reese's first senior year
Damn could've sworn it happened in an earlier season. My bad!
Fun fact: The theme song was done by the band They Might Be Giants (if you haven’t heard of them, go listen to Ana Ng and Spiraling Shape NOW.).
Now do a video on the Middle which is also a fun show to watch and also has many similarities but still manages to have its own identity!!
Loved the Middle too, but not sure if I have as much to say about it. Maybe I'll draft something up. Thanks for the suggestion!
Pretty good.
I think the show was a cross between The Simpsons and married with children

How is there more content than ever and nothing to watch
