Should You Stack Morgan Silver Dollars? Bad Idea or Huge Opportunity?

  • Should you stack Morgan Silver Dollars? Are there certain times when you should buy Morgan Dollars and others when it's not a good idea? I think there are some cool aspects of doing so, but I'm not too convinced that it's necessarily the best way to go about owning silver poundage at current prices and premiums. What do you think? I feel like there are some good ways to get an edge, whether that be learning the VAMs, cherrypicking for quality, being willing to buy in bulk, and other suggestions we'll go over. Let me know your thoughts below.

    I buy Morgans to get massive dopamine hits. It matters not if they are culled, or perfect. It is basically a numismatic masterpiece to me.
    My grandmother gave me my first Morgans just before she left this world. They remind me of the undying love that she had for me, and I still have for her.

      Same. My grandmother gave me Morgans for years until she died. They formed a sort of special bond between us. Morgans are money. Morgans have the right weight and feel to run through your hands, and that 10% copper makes them go clink clink clink in a way that American Silver Eagles never will. They are the iconic Western coin, gambler's coin, and "grandma" coin. I give them to my grandchildren to carry on that tradition.

    The Morgan was what actually got me into all of this and remains my favorite silver simply because it's "real" in that it's an actual coin rather than a round or a round posing as a coin (like Eagles and other modern silver coins).
    Morgans were actual currency which were used and handled by people and unlike the modern coins, they actually have numismatic value to them rather than just premiums.
    Then there's the history - the newest ones are a century old - that's an appeal for me as well.
    Yeah, I know this is all subjective stuff but I can't help myself - if the premium percentage is the same for a Morgan and an Eagle, I'll take a Morgan.

      I get what you're saying and understand the sentiment. However... a Silver Eagle is an actual, for-real silver dollar, minted by the U.S. Treasury, with a date and a guaranteed face value... just like our beloved Morgan and Peace Dollars. They're beautiful to boot. The kicker is that while you can generally buy a Morgan (culled for stacking and not suitable for collecting) for roughly the same price as an Eagle, the Eagle is pure silver, while the Morgan is only 90% silver.
      With all of that said, however, I must admit to having Morgan and Peace Dollars in my stack. I'm kind of addicted to their classic look and built-in historic value. They're wonderful to have.

    I’m 70 coins into a full Morgan collection in Fine condition using the Dansco albums. Pretty fun! And when I’m done I might upgrade a few for cleaner copies, but it’s fun and a bit ambitious. I enjoy flipping through the pages and feel the weight of the coins. Something cool to pass down as not everyone spends that much to do what I am out to finish.

    I stack low grade Morgan's. $30 ea shipped, $25 ea if I go pick them up. Cleaned, Damaged, what ever. The Morgan is very recognizable to people who don't collect or stack. It is a great size. It has been used for trade since the Romans times with the Thallen and then the Spanish Pieces of Eight. The low premium on low grade Morgan's for me is really pretty good. The only problem is Coin Dealers ragging on me for cleaning coins. Hay look I'm not here for high collector/dealer premiums and pedigreed Silver. I'm here for the best form of Silver in the cheapest fashion. And Big Bulky Bullion bars and such are just not my style.
    Want to see a cool 1886 that was fire damaged and cleaned, now has funky copper highlights, payed $26.11 shipped. I just uploaded one, 100% great coin for my Stack.

    Oh man, the Morgan & Peace dollars are my absolute favorite Silver coins. I have 4 or 5 dozen, but would love a small treasure chest full of them, just to scoop, and hear them clinking around in my hands. They are far from my eventual stacking goal, which would be to hit a 10 to 1 ratio of Silver to Gold, consisting of mostly Eagles 🦅. But every now and then, when I can sneak in to an auction late, and snatch em’ for a low price, I will add a couple more, here and there. Dang it, now you got me searching eBay again for those Morgans.

    It's important to learn how to identify cleaned and counterfeit coins, especially when buying raw Morgans with any numismatic premium.
    It's also fun to hunt for/cherry pick Morgans on the cusp of major condition rarity premiums, such as the 84-S in AU50, 53, 55, and 58 grades.

    • @TobaccoRowe1960
      @TobaccoRowe1960 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ANACS says 80% of Morgans have been Cleaned. If you are buying Pedigreed Morgan Dollars, you are paying way to much premium to be a Stacker. You are a Collector, just go ahead and admit it, you are a Collector !
      And If you are collecting being Clean is only one rule that will lose your pedigreed. Altered Surface, Environmental Damage, Graffiti ect....... See ANA or PCGS Guidelines for more information.

    There are 2 defined strategies I can see with Silver. Being a "bullion monster" or a sentimental Coin and Silver type. You can leverage both and add gold, real estate, and stocks etc. However if you read the comments you truly understand the "Numismatic" appeal. People love holding a real Silver Dollar and imagining where this coin has been. I read comments like that all the time. People love a connection and holding a coin and wondering if it was exchanged at a horse race in 1888, or spent at an Opera fascinates the human mind because it was around and the possibilities are endless. I have 1oz rounds. They have zero appeal except the Silver content IMO. Emotion wins, I'm stacking culls of Morgans and Peace. Great content.

    As a true collector of Morgans I don't see many out on the market now worth collecting.
    My brother and I started seperate collections back in 1988. What we see now on the market is nothing but junk coins according to standards set back in the the early 1980's. Now there are some good coins out there and a few good dealers at shows and some good LCS guys.
    However in the last two months I've seen two different TH-cam coin dealers send cleaned Morgan's off and they came back in slabs MS 63 - MS 65.
    I've see the same thing at shows where sometimes every 4th slabed coin I look at has been cleaned.
    Thats bull crap in my book and the reason #1 I haven't and will not purchase ANY coins off the internet.
    #2 l'll only purchase at coin shows or if I have them in my hand.
    #3 I'm not really sure I trust grading companies any more.
    I'm sorry but as long as people keep passing off these cleaned coins for BU and MS then the true value of true collectible coins will stay depressed. Also people that purchase these cleaned coins at ripoff prices will never see an investor gain in the value.(I don't think)

    the first coin given to me at age 5 was an 1889 Morgan. I held onto that for decades until someone stole it from me. this year, I am focusing on 90% and Morgans and Peace are stacking up. I try a mixture of reputable dealers, registered auctions with graded items, and eBay but only items with free shipping and bidding starts at under $35USD. In 3-6 months from now, I can already tell that 1 Morgan in any condition will start at $40USD and increase from there....onward and upward! stack on

  • @ronbauer9597
    @ronbauer9597 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Morgan’s will keep going up.
    Shops in Washington state charge 32.00 for culls or cleaned Morgan’s. But looking at some of your coins I believe I saw some 40-60 dollars coins. The cotton balls were clear and nice hair etc.
    I do the same thing I pick through and try to find the nicest eYe appeal coins that I can.
    Recently I bought a small collection that had 12 Morgan’s and three piece dollars mostly common dates and paid $25 apiece versus 32 at the coin store, so I saved about 100 bucks.
    But down the road there’s going to be those buyers that just want to have a Morgan dollar so they’re gonna want the cheaper ones they’re not gonna be collecting for numismatic value.
    I realized the silver content is less but still a good commodity for stacking because of their rarity.
    But along the same lines I’m still buying silver bullion but watching the premiums another words I’m shopping for the best deal.
    And then I’m always picking up constitutional silver I don’t care what condition it’s in. Of course the nicer coins the same thing as silver dime might only be worth $2.50, but I may find a rare date and actually end up with maybe at eight dollar dime.

    • @TreasureTownCoins

      Interesting! I think if you can get Morgans really cheap, it's good, but can mislead some. That sounds great to pay $25/ea.. I'd buy them all day at that price. These were bought attractively (which is why they're in front of me). RIGHT ON in terms of looking for the best deal.

A lot of the bullion went to Great Britain to prop up India's paper currency and the remainder was used to mint the 1921 Morgans.

Also I've experienced for myself I haven't bought silver because of inflation and I'm not getting much premium back. For the Carson City Morgan, $190 might buy you a low to mid grade coin, depending on the date. If you're looking for Extremely Fine, you'll have to go a lot higher than $190. Also, Carson Citys are frequently counterfeited by our pals in China and by other fakers, so it pays to learn as much as you can and beware when shopping for these. Unless it's a dealer I know personally, I'd only buy slabbed CC Morgans--PCGS or NGC.

    i have been buying precious metals for 15 years and the biggest misconception is it an "investment." unless you are buying thousands of dollars at a time, precious metals are NOT an investment, they might be a small asset. if the dollar collapses, you will need thousands of OZ of silver and gold to make any meaningful difference. a more important commodity will be ammo.

    "Stacking" Morgan dollars makes as much sense to me as buying graded and slabbed silver bullion coins.

    Good insight, but I think you are wrong. I think Morgan's will keep going up, and I think they are a great investment. Even if silver will go down, these coins will 'beat the market'! Everybody wants them, and they will become scarcer and scarcer. Only time will tell of course, but I have seen this many times with other things (Whisky - Rolex watches to name a few), where people said it was not a good investment, and then all of the sudden... BOOM.

      Interesting points! My view is that there are enough not to be super scarce... but I wouldn't be surprised if they go up in value (mostly tied to silver prices).

      @Treasure Town with the feds testing out digital currency and the American Dollar in decline due to debt gold and silver seems to be a good move..I collect Morgan's for silver content mostly.
      If the global economy crashes as predicted my Morgan's may make me some money...

    Silver dollars of any kind aren't really great for stacking, but they are good for stacking. The reason(s) are many. (1) I believe in diversity within my stack. (2) I like to keep my stack proportional, which means that if I have 10 Morgans, I have 10 Peace, 40 half dollars divided as evenly as possible between Kennedy, Franklin, and Walk Liberty halves. I also would have 80 Washington quarters and 200 dimes divided evenly between Mercuries and Rosies. (3) Silver dollars almost always command a higher price, often well over the spot price of Silver. (4) The nature of the coins means that while not all good condition Silver dollars are highly collectible, they become more collectible and more rare with each passing year, thus automatically adding to their value over time. (5) They still add genuine Silver weight to my stack. (6) I believe their ability to preserve the wealth I've spent in purchasing them will vastly outweigh any premium that I paid to get them. (7) Also, when selling these in any quantity, large or small, Morgan and Peace dollars are excluded form any reporting requirements. (8) 90%, Junk, or Constitutional Silver is probably the best overall Silver to make up the base of your Silver stack in my opinion. As such, having Morgan and Peace dollars is pretty much a must.

      I've bought 55 low grade Morgans bidding on ebay in the last 2 years. No fakes yet. And if I get one you can bet it will be reported to ebay and I will get my money back.

    Oh there is no good reason to buy Morgan dollars. Period. If you are investing in silver, you can find much lower premiums. If you're investing in numismatics, Morgans are the most overpriced numismatic coins in the world.

    • @TobaccoRowe1960
      @TobaccoRowe1960 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pedigreed Morgan's are overpriced. Cull Morgan premiums are not bad. Pure silver stackers do not stack pedigreed coins. I think you have us mixed up with collectors. Go watch my last video and tell me that coin is not worth $26 + $5 shipping.

    Silly attempt to force a false dichotomy between stacking and numismatics. Morgans are money. End of story.

    I feel those who would allow the market dynamism to determine when to trade or not are either new in space generally or probably just naïve, the sphere have seen far worse times than this, enlightened traders continue to make good use of the dip and pump even acquiring more equities towards trading sessions, I'd say that more emphasis should be put into trading since it is way profitable than hodling. Trading went smooth for me as I was able to raise over 11.4 BTC when I started at 1.5 BTC in just a few weeks implementing trades with signals and insights from Richard, I would advise y'all to trade your asset rather than hodl for a future you aren't sure about or hold it and risk losing all....I left his contacts in the comment below take care!
