  • "spAed Vol. 2", 1995 Nippon Crown.
spAed formed in 1994. The guitarist and bassist of spAed, Satoshi Hirose (広瀬さとし) and Masayoshi Yamashita (山下昌良), both were already considered Japanese hard rock icons, as both were respectively involved in 44Magnum and Loudness, with 44Magnum being credited as one of the earliest inspirations of the visual kei movement. Frontman Keiji Katayama (片山圭司) interestingly enough was somewhat popular as the former frontman for the cult new wave band Bluew, which split back in 1989. spAed was a completely new style to Keiji, which was much more inspired by gothic-esqued hard rock. As soon as spAed was formed, the group went major and signed to Nippon Crown, one of Japan's most respected major labels. In October of 1994, the group released its first full length album, "spAed Vol. 1", which was an underground smash, but failed to make a dent commercially. In May of 1995, spAed released their second full length album, "spAed Vol. 2", which was another commercial flop, but was an underground sensation. Thanks to the slight visual aesthetics of spAed, the group were openly embraced by the visual kei underground, despite being a major band. In 1996, spAed released two singles: "Led Moon" and "Soul Love", both of which failed to break the Oricon charts. In June of 1997, spAed released their third and final full length album, "Physique", which was yet another commercial disappointment. Despite their humongous underground following, spAed decided to disband by the end of 1997. Keiji retired temporarily from the Japanese underground rock scene, but returned by the late 2000's as an occasional solo artist and, surprisingly, as a lecturer at Nihon Kogakuin College. Satoshi went on to join the cult visual band Phi (Φ) in 1998, which was fronted by visual godfather Issay. In late 2000, Phi dissolved, and Satoshi then went on to join his original breakthrough 44Magnum band in 2001, which he is still a member of today. In 2010, Satoshi also released his first solo mini-album, "Obsession", which reached number 269 on the Oricon charts. Masayoshi also rejoined his original iconic hard rock band Loudness in 2000, which he remains a member of today. The drummer of spAed, Eric Zay, went on to become a support drummer for numerous artists, and also started his own solo career. Some of the artists that Eric has supported include Sugizo, Monoral and Aion.
