Given that living with bpd is pure unadulterated chaos, it makes sense that ocd would emerge as a desperate bid for control.

Whoa! I was watching this for myself, although I have OCPD and BPD but had an a-ha moment about my mom. Her expectations of people are extreme and it causes her so much distress. Her husband doesn't do what he should, her children don't do what they should, her friends don't do what they should, etc. It's easier to see it in others than myself but I can definitely see how my shoulds destroyed my 2 longest relationships (probably would have destroyed the others too but they didn't last long enough). My last relationship especially, I thought he should always assume the best in me and take my side against others who were mean to me. I just could not see any other perspectives which I think was a mixture of BPD and life stress exacerbating the BPD. Damn I wish I could go back and un-do those shoulds. It's so painful to watch your best friend fall out of love with you because you can't chill those expectations and reactions out. A disease that pushes everyone you love away is one of the worst things I can imagine and yet I don't have to imagine it because it's my life. Ugh.

Well, your comment is baffling to me because the examples that you gave seem very standard as far as characteristics of displaying loyalty to someone you share a life with. Of course every person wants those same characteristics of loyalty to be displayed to them too when they're sharing their life together! To have anything less would feel as though the person was not loyal to them. That's not a mental disorder. That's characteristics of loyalty that each and every single person alive and involved in sharing a life with another person wants for their own self too. Why would you use characteristics of loyalty as the example of the ill-defined maladaptive behavior that Fox spoke of? It's definitely not wrong of you to want loyalty and if that person thought it was then my guess is you're much better off to not be sharing a life with them. I don't get why you think that's a mental disorder when it's just the same thing everyone wants.

I was originally diagnosed with OCD. Then BPD. Thank you for giving me the information about the connection because rumination is just as painful as BPD.

About 2 months ago I split. I am the older weakened teenager. At present I am depressed. I did talk with a friend that was very helpful. I am using the coping tools I used when I went to was in therapy. I am hoping to change my core belief system. My friends are being very helpful. At present my progress is heading in the more healthy direction. Therapist in my area are booked that are trained in BPD. A friend that does have a standing appointment does have some helpful thoughts I can apply that help with my personal needs. She too has BPD. If my coping tools are effective my mental health will be on the mend. It takes time but progress is happening.

Thank you for this information Dr Fox.
    I have ocd and bpd.
I've always been terrified of losing control of my mind and have experienced loss of control of thought processes. The bpd/ocd connection makes perfect sense. You have been so helpful in my journey to healing. I am forever grateful to you.

So many live for years without a proper diagnosis. I think the numbers are definitely higher. So dismal is the commitment to mental health care, even though mental illness can absolutely impact physical health and if not addressed, can affect lifespan as much as many “physical” diseases. Hoping this will be recognized some day for those who suffer so much and, who, even when they do manage to reach out, find so little informed and effective help, if any.

Yep, I see the ocd in me.....This summer, here in England, I have sat on my grass and just cut it with scissors and now I cannot stop....even as far as trying not to let the neighbours see...I am telling you it feels so good because all the Borderline thoughts disappear....Think I have a bit of hoarding in me too!....I cannot part with all my 4 childrens paintings from early scool days...they are 30 years old and some are framed on my walls...Is that hoarding?...Thanks Dr Fox for your great help.....

Thanks for this video! :) Lately I've been wondering about whether I have OCD, and it's something I'm hoping to discuss with my new provider since on some level, I know the behavior I'm engaging in is illogical.
I've wondered what role the emotional intensity of BPD plays in this. Granted I also have GAD so that could influence my experience, but I experience anxiety a lot like other emotions, where I struggle to just let it exist or to self-soothe once it hits a certain intensity. So I think with compulsions it's easier to be like "ughhh fine, I'll go check the empty rooms for home invaders again" instead of staying on high alert with that persistent intrusive thought every time I'm home alone or my roommates are asleep, if that makes sense.

    1. Sympathetic nervous system directed personality.
    2. Non-sympathetic nervous system directed personality.

This explains the two personalities in almost everyone.
What is upregulating the sympathetic nervous system?
Iron overload in the cells and tissues does by triggering the NLRP3 ‘Fe-ar’ sensor of the cell. The Fe-ar emanates inside out, upregulated the sympathetic nervous system, drains blood from the prefrontal cortex, and creates an OCD need for amusement ‘noise’ to drown out the Fe-ar ‘signal.’
If only people had the ability to comprehend what I just stated.
    Morley Robbins discusses this dynamic.
Ironically, iron overload in the tissues causes anemia due to chronic inflammation.
Low iron in the blood is a result of too much iron in the tissues, the latter being an unknown variable in the Rockefeller for-profit medical system.

Oh my god, it all clicks now. I have BPD that usually manifests pretty mildly. I also have suspected body dysmorphia. But there has always been Something Else (TM). I'll eat a piece of bread that's been on the ground, I can't have OCD. Right? Right... And yet my friends constantly call me obsessed. Obsessed with control, since my life lacks it more often than not (disabilities are a bitch and a half). Obsessed with escape from pain. Planning suicide compulsively whenever control slips away. Obsessed with how I SHOULD look and then lashing out when my husband calls me handsome. Maybe I don't have OCD, but there's always been a central theme of control, obsessing over the "correct" way of things, losing control, and absolutely fucking exploding about it. I'll bring it up with my doctors. I'm tired of pursuing just regular depression treatment when there's obviously something more to address. Thank you, this video was kind of the final push for my own suspicions. It makes too much sense.

My ex has an official OCD diagnosis, she was diagnosed when she was 15. She got treatment for it for about 4 years when she was in her mid twenties then stopped going to therapy about 2.5 years ago & refuses to go back. She isn’t diagnosed BPD, but all arrows point to it. She has soooo many traits; a very strong fear of abandonment, splitting, black & white thinking, lack of identity, a history of intense/unstable relationships, has a favorite person/people, the all or nothing mentality etc. She is also a pathological liar, is struggling with her sexual orientation & was told by teachers when she was younger that she might be on the Autism spectrum.

Why would you want to diagnose your own partner instead of just communicating with them? If you really want help, Address the behavior, and how it affects you, make some requests and be clear about what you want to see happen over time, talk about some compromises, set some boundaries (that means things YOU will or won't do, not rules for your partner to follow) and be patient. If your husband has ANY disorder, that's not a reason to leave. It's happening to them, and weaponizing symptoms, or making someone feel guilty, does NOT encourage change in behaviors

    • @deborahjones5699
      @deborahjones5699 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Amused_Comfort_Inc after 43 yrs with this man I have always told myself you don't leave crazy...I have set boundaries and had them broken, I've been told I was only joking...7 councilors.....and zero change...I have had enough abuse. He either gets a diagnosis from a professional and learns behavior techniques that can be worked on or adios for good.
