Looks like they had some room to spare on GPU wattage with that beefy cooling solution, they really should update the bios or whatever necessary to increase the power limits cause the GPU was sitting pretty cool.
Amazing review, Stephen, as always. I would recommend putting the battery life on a graph just so we would easily compare to the other laptops you reviewed under normal testing conditions (youtube playback or web browsing etc), though I know you said it in the video
Last year's Omen 15 also ran similarly cool with even less heat pipes (and similar wattage) thanks to bottom ventilation holes not being blocked.
We must have the exact same taste in laptops. I bought the GE66 recently without realizing how close the new generation was. I was on the fence about returning it and moving to the G15 to better suit my needs and you have confirmed everything I hoped was true. I've now placed my order with full confidence that I'm making the right choice. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your reviews. It really shows.

Hey guys I love both your channels I am currently debating between an alienware m15 r3 4k oled 2080 max q 10875h versus this zephyrus with the 3070, how is the fan noise on this laptop in balanced mode versus the alienware, I currently have both on order and can cancel one. I spend alot of time in balanced or silent mode gaming as I have a wife with medical and small children i need to hear at night so headphone are no
@@vidfinnx like I mentioned in my review, if you use silent mode the fans don't spin up till they reach 72 degrees. So it is silent 😀👍

I only ask because I watched your alienware review and you are the only one that I have seen that has had both laptops in their possession, my g15 is still being shipped but I have an m15 r3 only desk at the moment. I'm hoping the g15 is as tolerable or more quiet than this m15 on balanced. I will definetely be getting some of that cool merchandise you got posted now. I've always noticed on every alienware has a higher pitch sound to their fans.

@@Saad-yk8qp The only issues I've had with Asus laptop in the past were fans rattling. Have had this on the G15 or the Flow x13. Running CBR23 and having handbrake encode. Max CPU temp 77 degrees

@@OWNORDISOWN but ypu can get an usb dongle. You insert the SD card in the dongle and access all the data you got on the SD card. It may not be the fastest but I use that to acces big SD card on my phone.

I think the Legion 5 Pro power limits are closer to the ROG Scar, so the 5 Pro should win in the performance department, but I bet the G15 will fare much better in battery life testing

Just ordered this today because of videos like yours, it arrives Tuesday. This is my first dedicated gaming laptop. I've heard/read mostly good things, and for someone like me who isn't very knowledgeable on computers, I'm sure I'll be blown away and more than happy with it. Before this the only computer/laptop I've ever owned was a Toshiba Satellite from 2011 😅 Thank you for helping me make my decision!

I did end up pulling the trigger on this one. I preordered from Best Buy. I did have an issue with the first one. The audio never worked. I was lucky and able to go to my local best buy and they had 1 in stock I exchanged for. This laptop is a DREAM. The performance is just simply insane. I do game when I travel and I normally take my Alienware 51m with a 9900k and 2070 it. This laptop seems to keep up and beat it in a lot of ways. Which is insane considering the Alienware has a desktop CPU. I am a traveling software engineer and do a lot of work on airplanes and hotel rooms. Normally, I would do the work when I am on the road but would wait to compile and push till I got home and used my desktop. This laptop can handle it without much loss of time! It just blows my mind. The same project took almost 20 min on the Alienware, took less than 8 on this.

Great review. Very disappointed in the lack of mux/advanced optimus in the asus gaming laptops though, i cancelled my preorder because of it, doubt im alone.

Looks great. I was wanting this model when it was first introduced last year but went with the 2020 omen 15 because asus wasn't selling it anywhere. If I could have waited to get a laptop and knew this was coming I'd have done so! Oh well. Tech is getting better and better, amazing to see such high end graphics cards in a laptop.

I'm conflicted about getting the Scar g 15 or the zeyphrus g 15
It's not that hard, scar g15 is thicker and a little bigger but it probably has better performance and the Zephyrus g15 is thinner making it more portable and slicker at the cost of some performance.
If one of my friends were contemplating the same thing, I’d tell them to just get the Zephyrus G15. The CPU and GPU wattage are the same on both, so you’re not losing out on performance (you can see in this review that there’s plenty of headroom on cooling in this chassis). It’s smaller and lighter with no hit to performance nor battery life. The only thing you’d be lacking would be in the LED department (per-key lighting and the LED strip in the front/sides), which loses its novelty very quickly. And lastly, you’ll come to find weight and size to be a much bigger consideration when you have to actually tote the thing around, fit it into a backpack, make room for it on a desk, on your lap, etc.

When is the g14 2021 version coming out?
Only thing I hate is when I got the G14 with 32gb Ram, top spec Ryzen processor in black, when It became faulty it was next to impossible to find same spec one. Now with this I want the Ryzen 9, 3070 in grey, it is listed on their site but not one store in the UK has that SKU. Why is it so hard to give them my money LOL

For these laptops, I’d appreciate if you posted the wattages from the Nvidia control panel itself. There’s a lot of misinformation floating around because people might accidentally quote wrong wattages, it would be great if you could provide physical evidence of the wattages

Own and G14, and the fingerprint scanner works like charm. Never had a problem in 6 months (touch wood)
The video port going via intergrated GPU is actually incredibly convinient for people who connect and disconnect external monitor very often.
Because if you connect an external monitor via a port which does via Nvidia GPU the system becomes stuttery and unpleasant to use, especially noticeable in games; this is only fixed with a complete reboot. Another bad thing happens if that when you disconnect external display for the laptop a GPU stays on and drains the power almost twice as fast compared to just integrated graphics. Again, fixed with a reboot or disabling Nvidia graphics manually in the device manager.
I do a lot of 24\7 rendering and can't just pause or progress will be lost, so rebooting is not an option. I can't fully express my frustration when I got a laptop with only discrete GPU port and had to either suffer from stutters or lose my rendering process, as well as all other programs and files that I kept open, every single time. Could this be just my Dell laptop? Nope, my friend with an MSI raider laptop tried connecting his laptop to an external monitor, and until he rebooted it the stutters were even worse, it was pretty much unusable.
Which is why I'm gonna make pretty damn sure that my next laptop supports video out with integrated GPU, even if I have to lose some performance in a few games, at least I'll enjoy stable and smooth experience and won't sacrifice battery life on the go.
Same spec as what I've pre-ordered, but because I'm in the UK and BREXSHIT is now in effect, I won't be getting my paws on it for another month - plus, the version that I've bought seems to have the Ryzen 5800H rather than the 5900HS, which is weird - but the difference is fairly minimal from what I've read.

Hey! Thought I'd reach out here to give others a heads up. I received mine and was thrilled with certain aspects of it. However, two issues for me are showstoppers. The screen is not bright enough. Second, I saw this on a different reviewers review of the this laptop,. He mentioned reports of the speakers popping when loud. Yup. Mine do that. Sigh.... so much about this laptop I loved. Back to BestBuy it goes.

I think something's up with your fingerprint reader of it's only working 50% of the time. I've been using this laptop for a few days now and it has never failed to unlock on the first try, super fast too. You should contact Asus about that because that's not normal

-A much brighter screen
-A noticeably better build quality
-A webcam
-A 99 watts battery

It’s so frustrating that they decided to connect the hdmi port to the onboard graphics rather than the GPU. Would have been nice to plug it into my LG OLED and kick out 4K 120hz gaming which I’m sure the 3080 variant is capable of.

Just bought this online from Best Buy. I think I got the last one because about 10 mins after I ordered, it was sold out. I was a bit down because I was debating between this and the MSI RTX 3080 laptop. But it was only 1080P and $2600. I would love a 3080 but for $800 less, this seems like a great buy. So I’m happy. Exciting! The only issue I have come across is that in sleep mode (when attached to the AC outlet) the keys flash, so it doesn't seem to be asleep. When on battery this does not happen. I'm reaching out to Asus about it.
@@OWNORDISOWN if you go into the armoury crate>click on the ‘Device’ tab on the left>click ‘System’>Navigate to the ‘Lighting’ tab>click ‘Settings’ within the Lighting tab on the right>switch Sleep to Off. No more flashing in sleep mode :)
Does the fact that it looks like the heat is exhausted out through the back onto the screen make the thermals questionable and maybe worrying in the long term? Def looking to get this towards the end of the year hopefully on a discount though.
this will be my next laptop. i was thinking about powerful ultrabook but at 1299-1599£ it makes no sense. i will pick (just can't decide between 3060 or 3070) this and connect to my LG 27GL850 using USBc 3.2
It is a very nice laptop. I am testing quite a few games and , apart from in Ray Tracing work, it is slower than my 2080 max Q it seems...
I'm torn between this one and the new Max 17 (very similar to last years model). The Max has a higher wattage 3070, two ram slots, and a bigger screen, but the g15 has a better CPU, better speakers, and it seems to run cooler and quieter from what I can tell. And the G15 isn't on back order for 2 months. Any tips?

Seeing these Performance results for this makes me have zero regrets buying my Alienware m17 R3 with RTX 2070S on sale during Black Friday this last year. Other than better CPU temps there's no advantage to upgrading this gen from a RTX 2070S Max-P laptop this gen.
I have both the Alienware M17R3 with the 2070S here with this G15. I'm seeing 10fps faster in the games I play with the 2070S. Kind of bummed out......LOL. But the 5900HS processor has mind boggling performance. To bad the 80w 3070 is so dissapointing. Now to make a decision on which one to keep.
@@cmacclel yeah, I was kind of worried about it when I purchased it even though I got mine for a fairly good deal (about 30% off sticker price) and it has had really good performance and I started seeing leaks of benchmarks but real world performance reviews have been somewhat lackluster it seems and this whole thing with not very transparent TDPs has showed I actually did pretty well with my purchase decision and not splurging on the latest and greatest. Although the ASUS ROG STRIX 17" has a pretty good lead in performance to the Alienware m17 R3 2070S it's 20% at most over it and is in a considerably larger footprint compared to the m17. The main advantage is that Ryzen 9 5900HS which has better performance per watt and better temps (I control mine on demanding games through undervolt and capping TDP to 45W while gaming and using Cool mode on really demanding games with an OC on the GPU to compensate).

Waiting on mine to get here (supposedly the 16th) The performance seems very good overall. The ram config is honestly my biggest hangup still. I have a pretty good return policy so I'm planning to give it a good shot and if I have any doubts I'll take it back. I wanted something smaller and lighter that could still pack a punch to go with my 3080 desktop
I'm sure you will like it. Battery life is amazing and for its weight it has good performance.

My only concern at this point is the ram as 16 is a bit tight feeling, is there any chance you are planning to test out the performance impact if you did say upgrade it to 24gb of ram as 8gb of it will end up in single channel mode?
