I live about 30 miles above Atlanta. I toured a local well-known gardener's yard and noticed an area of bamboo near his pond. I asked him if his non-clumping bamboo was invasive. He told me he has had it for 30 years and it never became invasive. He just kicks over young shoots that pop up in mid-spring and they don't grow back. He dug up about 4 stalks of mature bamboo for me and I planted them in my backyard. In the first Spring when the new shoots popped up, animals ate all of the new growth and the bamboo didn't spread. The next year I rolled up hardware cloth and protected the new shoots. I am gradually getting the benefit of some bamboo privacy. Related to being invasive; privet, sweet gum, ivy, pine, wandering jew tradescantia, and Chamberbitter (Phyllanthus niruri) are the real nuisance here.
I agree I love bamboo shoots there's so many recipes you can use with bamboo shoes I'm going to go get some Chinese food now handsome bamboo I think I will get the bamboo that is a clumping bamboo I don't want it to go all over the yard happy gardening and it's so good for construction uses I mean bamboo floorings not cheap yes I've always been in construction
My dads buddy brought him a walmart sack full of little bamboo plants he dug up. They were dry and looked dead but dad planted it anyway and 12 years later its freaking AWESOME!!! Its running bamboo, we live in Oklahoma. He planted it about 50 feet from his house and we just trim it back every year, has never been an issue as long as you dont neglect it.

It's also a clumping kind and creating a gorgeous privacy hedge. It's one of the few edible varieties that one can actually find in the U.S. My other one, which is Bambusa Textilis I grew from seeds, which is also beautiful, but the shoots are not edible.
I've wanted to plant bamboo for a few decades. It is hard to find locally for a reasonably (1-3 gallons) price. Now, I have the time-though I'm old, and the space. From where did you get yours, and is the summer in AZ the time to plant it?
I don't know what your Bamboo varieties are, beside Buddha Belly, since there's thousands of different ones. But, I'm sure you know that only about 10% of the varieties are edible. The edible ones are in 3 categories; Excellent, Good and OK. I have two varieties, and they are both the clumping kind. Really beautiful. One of them edible (Hawaian Golden Bamboo). However, even the edible ones contain Taxiphyllin, which is a type of Cyanide. This is why all Bamboo shoots must be cooked in order to be used as food.
Bamboo trees are amazing, I love bamboo! however after the years the roots can destroy homes and foundation, how can I grow bamboo without destroying my home?
You put a divider around it. Before u start planting, dig around the area and put bricks and cement in the ground . That way the roots can not spread over to your neighbors or damage your pool, etc.

@@TheGardenNerdi don’t disagree. There are ways you can permanently contain bamboo. Like a reinforced concrete border or a raised bed. Bamboo roots only crawl under the surface about 4 inches
It has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of soil. It has everything to do with the variety of Bamboo that you grow. There's thousands of different varieties. However, the main groups are Running Bamboo and Clumping Bamboo. And Clumping Bamboo is never invasive. I know, because I'm growing two different kinds of Clumping Bamboo. people forget the east coast of the US was covered with bamboo before colonial settlers. bamboo isn't invasive, settlers cleared bamboo to create farms.
Why do people do stuff like that? It’s ok if the risk is just yours, but it’s not. If you are wrong, your neighbors could be at risk. Find another plant.
My neighbor planted running bamboo in his yard ,within 2 years it invaded my entire backyard and destroyed my pool ..took him to court and won ....look at your local laws before you plant this crap in your yard

To make easy work of trimming the unwanted culms, you can use a reciprocating saw. Just a heads up for anyone who doesn't want to use a shovel.

what variety did you plant? where did you buy it? how often do you have to water in summer vs. winter?
I have Oldhami and Buddha's belly. Don't water much at all in winter. Summer I deep water every few weeks plus skinklers from grass.

Oldhami. Yes, it makes it through the winter just fine. It doesn't look as good, but it get through the cold no problem.

There's a lot of Bamboo varieties that are the clumping type. Just look for the ones that are suitable for your growing zone.

The shoveling wasn't even necessary. Bamboo does not grown back from the same node once the shoot is damaged/cut.

Correct, this is why the video tells you to plant clumping bamboo. Clumping bamboo doesn't do that.
