In Texas I water my bamboos twice a day sometimes during the heatwave. I also put some mulch on the bamboos to keep them humid and it works good so far on some species. Last winter was horrible here, it was in the lower 20s so they got damaged but they grew back.
I live in north Texas and am researching what bamboo to plant as a screen in my backyard. What type of bamboo have you guys planted in Texas? Any suggestions? Thanks!
Very informative. Thanks for the timeline, it really puts the growing stages of clumping bamboo into perspective. I see it's also a good idea to install a deep and tall border from the neighbors, they can spread out!
Thanks for the updates! My stuff got nuked too up here near Seattle. I have a bunch of clumpers. I also have a bunch of timbers, but I like to play with fire, it’s super fun. You just need to manage the stuff. I have some 12 year old timbers planted bareback where the mother clump is mature but only has a 4’ diameter footprint.
I just picked up some Golden Goddess bambusa mutliplex clumping bamboos that apparently grow max 3m heigh here in New Zealand. Looking forward to see what they can do (to block out my neighbors as well)
You’ve grown a really neat forest. I love the robusta stalks, lovely colour. Your worried neighbour has been arming up with a panda 🐼 to eat its way through your bamboo in a couple of days if it gets out of control.
That plastic wall that you put into the ground should also extend at least 15-30cm out of the ground. That way if there is debris, the roots cant use it as way over the wall.
Hey, I'm in Vancouver, WA too. Planted 50 robustas along my property line for privacy last summer and the ones that get full sun exposure got absolutely pummeled by the heat dome. How are yours recovering now that fall is here? Mine look like about 50% of the damaged culms might recover and the other 50% are probably goners. I am also starting to think about how to maintain an edge and not let them eat up too much of the yard. Have thought about renting a trenching machine to run along the front side of the hedge once per year or so. Think that would make quick work of it. Yours look really good with the lower culms trimmed.
The heat dome thrashed my bamboo, especially the ones furthest west. But I’d say 90 of my culms are well into recovery mode. Also, I’ve had the bamboo for years and they’ve never burned like that. The trencher is a good idea. You can replant what you cut off as well. I plan on taking about a foot off the edges of my grove next year. Glad to meet another Vancouverite here! Would love to see your grove in person!
@@myboringchannel Glad to hear it. Would be happy to show you the "grove." I just planted it last summer and had to tear a few out already for a pond I'm building. Is the email address on your YT about page the best place to get in touch?
Great video and information. It looks like you have your bamboo planted adjacent to you neighbor’s fence (as I am planning to do). Does it stay on your side of the fence completely contained in your yard? I have a concern about it growing under the fence in my application. Thank you.
You have to put a barrier around it. I have a 30 inch piece of root barrier in the ground around the entire grove. th-cam.com/video/8pJ3JxAaK_U/w-d-xo.html
Hi! In 2017 I planted two fargesia scabrida bamboo plants here in Rochester, NY (zone 6b). They have done very well since then. That is until this winter 2022. We had a couple of unusually cold cold snaps this winter (low single digits) and today both plants have turned totally brown and are dropping their leaves. Are they totally dead or just killed off above ground? What should I do to help them recover if still alive? THANKS!
I am in Vancouver Washington. They do great in full sun. We have hot summers here and they do fine. There is no shade for them in my yard. That is in fact why I bought them. Hardiness, sun tolerance, and height.
So the bamboo will automatically shoot up right? I’ve got a singular bamboo that I managed to grow roots on it in just water. I need to put it in soil soon.
No I did not realize that. I can hear myself in the video so I assume other people can hear me. The volume might be a little low, but you can turn it up loud enough so that you can hear me.

Wow, the yellow color of the robusta is so beautiful

It’s a plant. With good planning, it can be controlled. Nice job.

Maybe looking at the few good blueberries that were still hanging on will make you not so sad. Thanks for sharing your bamboo growth progress.
I hope so!
Would love another update

Thanks for the comment. My neighbor is not worried. We are good friends.
I love bamboo especially running black bamboo. I hope my neighbors like it too 😂😂
As long as it doesn't escape and go into their yard they should like it

thank you for the updates. Try planting moso bamboo, if you dare hehe

Super helpful videos! Which robusta do you have? Pingwu or Campbell? Trying to decide between them.
Campbell
So sorry about your blueberry bushes. Thank you for the information. I’m wanting to grow bamboo for the poles.
Love it. This is the kind of bamboo i need to also block a neighbor. Will these thrive if i placed them in planters? Maybe 1 ft by 6 ft and 3ft deep?
1' x 6' ? I'm not sure. They get much much bigger than that so those plants would probably be root bound in no time.
@@myboringchannel I’m hesitant on planting them on the ground, it might invade my neighbor’s backyard. That’s the last thing i would want to happen 😁
That's a valid concern
I want to grow bamboo for privacy from the 300 unit apartments that’s being built. I also eat the bamboo shoots in Thai curry.

Which robusta do u have I’m thinking of getting Campbell
That's what I have.
they also called white zebra bamboo because of the calm sheets, cool hedge btw :)
Nice video. Where can I buy the robusta seeds?
I didn't plant from seed. I bought the plants from bamboo garden near Portland
So the bamboo will automatically shoot up right? I’ve got a singular bamboo that I managed to grow roots on it in just water. I need to put it in soil soon.
That's what I'd try!
@@myboringchannel any input on the kind of nutrients I can use to promote new shoots?
Cover the berry bush in a white sheet in a heatwave and water every day. It will survive.
When do all the messy dead leaves fall? Does the debris blow around when it's windy?
There is a ton of debris right in the grove. It doesn’t blow around at all and it keeps the weeds down (they’re almost non-existent) in the grove.
Did you use a trench digger to place the rhyzome barrier?
Pure manual labor, and lots of it
You always need some good afternoon shades for anything to grow well. Get rid of you lawn and plant some real good shade trees and fruit trees.
Your last video was ok by with headphones on, can't hear this video
Are you planning on having that all around the backyard fence? That would look amazing!
No. I'm keeping it in a pretty small area
But you are right. It would look great!!
Hi ,can you please tell us where did you buy the bamboo plant ?
Bamboo Gardens
Do you know which variety of robusta you have?
I thought robusta was the variety.
The only bamboo that actually works is the plastic barrier that goes down 24+ inches. Mine goes down 30" and nothing has escaped it.
I have a barrier that goes 30 inches into the ground also.

Does your neighbor like the bamboo?
Yes. It’s a privacy screen for them as well. And it’s contained.
Try laurel instead... bamboo is terrible to try to remove / move. Laurel can grow tall and easy to trim and keep in check.
Audio is bad.
Cool. Thanks
Ok so you do realize we cannot hear you?
