    SHORT TIBETAN TERRIER DESCRIPTION:
The Tibetan spaniel weighs around 4kgs to 7kgs and about 25 cm tall. They have long feathering growing between their toes, they have a plumed tail and undershot mouth. Their average lifespan is around 13 to 15 years.
Tibetan Spaniels are trusting and affectionate pets but they are cold to strangers. You do not have to worry though, even if they are unfriendly to those they do not know, they are never aggressive. This makes them excellent watchdogs that will alert you with their barks if anything is out of the ordinary.
Having other pets is not a problem with the Tibetan spaniel as they are normally amiable with your other pets and just likes to enjoy quick naps next to their owners.
Although called the Tibetan Spaniel, they are not true Spaniels but rather known as “epagneul” which means tiny comforter dogs. The word “epagneul” came from Middle Ages France
The Tibetan Spaniel originated from Asia during the ancient times. Buddhist monks bred the Tibetan Spaniel to look like little lions that symbolize Buddha. They became the alarm dogs for the monks’ Tibetan monasteries just like their cousin breed, the Lhasa Apsos.

I'm a breeder/owner of Tibetan Spaniels since 1992. Tibbies are warm, loving, affectionate and smart and excellent pets.

I spent the winter in a Tibetan monastery in South India and am the process of adopting a pup. The Tibetan spaniels you mainly see here are white and tan. The pup is not very furry yet but has a noble face. He is already a great watch dog and alerted everyone to a snake in the yard the other night. He eats everything!

Buddha, my tibbie must be the odd ball of the breed. He loves everybody, especially the ladies. While he can be a bit stubborn, he has been a great companion and has also now completed his service dog training . He has been noted by several hospitals as an ambassador for service dogs, and the reason behind those hospitals launching service and therapy dog admissions. At just 2&1/2 years of age, he's had to spend a couple of weeks with me in the hospital. Of course when he has , he certainly gets lots of attention. It's great to see the breed garnering the attention they deserve. Thanks.

That is impressive that he is a service dog. It sounds you have the perfect dog! :)

@@Rocadog oh he truly believes he's perfect. He's never met a human he doesn't love, some more than others, where he has his difficulties is with bigger dogs. If we encounter one, he sits between my feet and cries until I pick him up, then Dr.Jekyl becomes Mr Hyde, and he gets his little territorial thing going. Unless it's one of the other members of the household, he absolutely doesn't want any other dogs near me. We have quite a few larger dogs in the area that I guess he reminds them of the rabbits that live wild around the house, so they pick on him, S consequently he doesn't do so well around bigger dogs. When asked about how he sheds, I just tell people he sheds once, 365 days a year. Lol
We love your videos , and he always sits next to me while they play. Buddha doesn't seem to pay as much attention to other animals on the screen as much as my last Tibbie Maugui tho. Most of the literature I've read on the breed has a little bit of a discrepancy on longevity from AKC , all the books I've read put their life span between 17 and 19 years . It's curious to know AKC has a different opinion .

I had a TS in the 80s and 90s. Most loving, loveable ......... and smart dog I've ever had. I'd love to find another. Lots of hair in the winter and good health. Wonderful watch dog.

I adopted a dog a while ago and I thought he was a Pekingese, but it didn't really fit because he didn't have alot of the traits of pekingese, turns out he is a Tibetan Spaniel. ❤️
      And he is STUUUBURN!! 😂

I've had two "Tibbies" and they are wonderful little dogs. I lost one after having her for 17 years. My current Tibetan Spaniel, I've had for 11 years. She is well known in our community and is always welcomed by everyone. She is a great watchdog and traveler when I go somewhere. She was raised around cats and enjoys playing with them. But as you say, they can be willful. She is a great companion dog and can be found very close to me most of the time. But for all that she has never been a lap dog, instead she is always stays close to me.

Yes my dog was written down at the vet as Pekingese Mix. That was before I knew what he was. He was a stray dog believe it or not before I got him. I checked my neighborhood anyway before I just kept him.

    • @Rocadog
      @Rocadog  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

It is very common to mistake the Tibetan Spaniel with Pekingese, i am not surprised. You are great for taking care of him when he was a stray dog :)

Rocadog Thank you. I love dogs always have. One thing I can’t do (someone would have to do it for me) is adopt a shelter dog simply cause I can’t pick a dog knowing the others probably won’t get a home. I would take one if someone else went and got it for me..but I can’t set foot in one. Well mainly a kill shelter I couldn’t do.
