- I inverted the direction of every note in "Für Elise" relative to the first note, eg. if it was 5 semitones down, it is now 5 semitones up. Also had to shift the entire piece down an octave because the results extended beyond the range of the piano. I think that's mostly because it's MIDI though. If someone played it by hand, or used a more advanced composing program, I don't think it would sound like video game music.

Cuz inverting something at C is so much harder than inverting at at the E lol.. Take the upper note, check distance to E (good interval reading practice actually) and just write it down :D Not that hard. Just do it one part at a time, then practice it, then next.

Now, I am not an expert in music, so take my experiences with a grain of salt:
I think it is as beautiful as the original, but less...emotional. This is because the piece keeps returning to the same high notes, like the original does with low notes. The latter sounds reassuring, like a return to home, although that might be a depressing one. While the original sounds somber, then happy, then somber, then happy, this one begins sounding happy, then with each passing repetition it seems more and more robotic, and then comes the psycho moment in the middle abd everything starts to sound psychotic and then the abrupt end....it is although Beethoven composed this for Elise, not to play, but to replace a broken music box ballerina or something

Honestly I really like the last chord at 2:30. It sounds really hopeful at the end, which contrasts with the original dark, minor key center ending.
You know a song is a classic when you can play it backwards, in reverse, or even chopped up and people still love it.
This could make for an amazing dubstep/electronic song.

Sounds like role playing video game music for when you meet the whimsically enigmatic character that eventually joins your party after a series of interesting, but brief, encounters.

This is amazing, I know it's gonna sound silly of me, but you should really try "mirror" play them, you know?, play the original version and the inverted one at the same time, it would be super interesting to hear how it would sound like!

i love the fact that, comparing the original version to the inverted, the minor chords turn mayor and viceversa. Like, the parts that are supposed to sound dramatic don't give the same feeling at all when inverted. i dont really get why it happens but i love it.
This really should be thrown into an 8bit format, then you'll get that boss battle sound through properly :D
While the original to me has the feeling of "contemplation", "recognition", and "awe", the inverted has feelings of "adventure", "exploration", and "discovery". Both feelings involving some sort of travel or motion but with different intentions, all resulting from a simple inversion. Wow... total amazement.
This is from the parallel universe where Beethoven and Elise were happily married for lifetime ❤️

So, in theory, this would be the absolute "wrong" way of playing this song, but in reality it comes out just as perfect and armonic only in its own unique way, because the feeling of the song is just never lost, just transformed. It carries the same meaning, only in a different manner. I don't know, this is so mind blowing to me for some reason, like we are being introduced to parallel universes or something...

I don't have absolute pitch, and I can't see any single tone as a colour. But once I heard this recording, it immediately gave me impression of watching colour negatives. You are able to see shapes, you may even recognize the faces (if there were faces on the photos), but still most of a picture is missing, let alone the true colours. The rhythm of "Für Elise" is so clear that you could just as well play random notes, and still the listener will have a clue about the original melody. But feelings are not there. Take the "dramatic part" - with only high tones it's not dramatic at all. However, the experiment (or perhaps just a joke) is very interesting indeed.
In my opinion this inverted piece is eerie in a sense. (Bare with me) It sounds fine, like it doesn't come off as creepy or disturbing, but it is so robotic and unchanging that it comes off as foreboding. Like a movie that depicts a normal scenario with seemingly normal characters, but has a dark underlying message or theme. Like, don't take the song at face value.

I think the reason why so many of these classical songs work so well is due to 5 up being flipped to 5 down ends up with a IV.

Modes are symmetrical: D is symetric, G/A, C/E F/B. That's why it stays perfectly melodic
If I understand this correctly, this is interval perfect inversion - a symmetric reflection of the absolute number of steps or half steps away from the leading tone. I wonder what a diatonic inversion would sound like where you stay in the key. That would be interesting I think but I don't have a clue of MIDI software, so I don't know if it's easily doable with standard software, without writing a script or plugin.

There's an app called photosounder (quite old) based on creating spectrograms, and seeing how image operations on the spectrogram influence the music. If you flip the image along some frequency/semitone (while still in logarithmic scaling) this has a similar effect as the midiflip about the frequency/semitone. While the melody will be recognizable, it is not exactly the same considering that all frequency content of the music is flipped so the timbre will change. It is not as clean sounding as midiflip.

This is pretty interesting. Note how ideas done in minor, when flipped over, become relatively major sounding, and vice versa. For example, the first verse and bridge, done traditionally in a minor mode, but now having been reversed with respect to the first scale degree, sound pretty major (jaunty and happy go lucky). However, when we move on the second 'movement' (it's not really done in movements, I just can't think of a better way to describe it), which in the actual piece switches to a major mode, it now sounds very minor. Interesting to note the inverse nature of the note relations. The same idea upside down changes the mode back and forth. I wonder if this still works on a song where the first note is different than the first scale degree.
