I think I have figured out why he wants Timothy to study. Timothy can't effectively evangelize if he hasn't studied what he is teaching. He wouldn't know when to be an encouragement or when it was time to point someone in the right direction. Essentially he couldn't do his job if he did not work to gain the skills he needs to do the job and study to obtain the knowledge he needs to teach correctly. Paul also won't be there to give Timothy all the answers so the responsibility is now on Timothy to study and know what he is to teach.
@@Tanya_loudestgarden Such a good answer! Everything you said is correct (I especially love the last sentence), but I hope you don't mind if I push you a little bit deeper :) remember where Paul is right now and what is about to happen. If you don't know, he is in prison about to die. Study chapters 1 and 2 and see the flow of thought and how it seasoned with suffering and the need to endure. And then he transitions to the gospel and the study and sharing of the Word... why would he do that? How are suffering for the gospel and studying the Word linked? Food for thought 😊
@@GrantsPassBaptist-Church Thanks. I will go deeper into it. I did know he was in prison awaiting death at the hands of Emperor Nero. I learned the story. But there is so much more to it than we ever learned at church or Bible camp. -Tanya
@@GrantsPassBaptist-Church Okay I need a little guidance to see if I am getting close. This is honestly my first time really studying the Bible... Is it something to do with suffering being the experience and studying gaining the knowledge? Like to have a job you have to know how to do a job but also have the experience to really do it well. By being in the truth Paul has experienced suffering but because of this he can teach about Christ's sacrifice with more understanding. By studying then Timothy will have the knowledge to teach what he has learned but through the suffering he can show his faith through his life. The suffering will also teach Timothy to have a dependence on the strength the Lord provides. Paul also wants Timothy to know that suffering does not come without reward (his own salvation and the salvation of those that he evangelizes to)?? I have no idea if I am even close but I am trying. And I don't plan on giving up.
My study is early in morning when still dark with a cup of coffee & when everything is sill quiet. It’s just Jesus & me. Oh I have a special lounge chair too. It’s a special place. 😇🙏🏻
Great explanation sir, doing church ministry in Japan, and been invited to several different churches as a guest speaker. There were times when I struggled about what topics to talk about because usually, a direct approach to the Japanese Christian audience would somehow overwhelm them. So I was searching and came across this video and it was a blessing to hear such encouraging words. Thank you Pastor Smith, God bless you.
Thank-you for your teaching! I appreciate your comments on context. One Bible teacher said it this way: a verse taken out of context is a pretext. You mentioned how every verse is connected to the one before it, so it follows that it is connected to the on after it as well. Thank-you brother for your teaching it has helped me greatly.
Great video with practical tips on how to properly observe, interpret and apply scriptures. Amazing how so many seek private hotlines with God, while ignoring the feast he has already given us just waiting to be explored.
I feel like you just gave us the keys to unlocking the Scriptures!! Dude when I say I'm sooo excited.... oh my goodness that is an understatement!! THANK YOU!!! God bless 😊👍🏾❤️
Thank you Pastor Addison for this teaching for so long I have tried to ask those I know in ministry for help and they promise but when the time come they back away. Thank God for your Character that shows so much passion
This was so helpful! I came to this video through a search. I have read books on studying the Bible that took me weeks to get through and left me more confused than before. This video lays out everything so beautifully. I filled a few pages in my notebook and it took me an hour with pausing to take notes and deal with kids. Best hour I have spent this week. Thanks so much for taking the time out of your day to help other learn this important skill. I think churches should show this video to Bible study groups to help them learn to study for themselves. I have done loads of those guided Bible studies but I always felt like I was just being fed what the author of the study wanted me to get. I look forward to putting this all into practice for myself. -Tanya
Re the verse that seems random being holy ground when you stop and explore it, that is so. true. Examples that jump to mind for me have been 1 John 3:12 and Psalm 103:7. Thanks for the equipping content!
Work is good! Studying is a good work! And when it’s Gods Word study is amazing. I want to know My Father more and more. Gods Word is His love letter to us. I definitely want to read and learn God love letters to me. 😊
This is very good content! And to recommend John Phillips ❤️, All of his exploring series are great. I have had the pleasure of meeting him at my church about 23 years ago. He was the guest speaker and did a few seminars for us. Great recommendations.
Great tips! Especially the first the one. It’s just one big book. Thanks for the work you put into these videos. I do want to say that your video and audio are off by just a little bit.
Hi. I decided to purchase the two books you have shown on your videos. Matthew Henry’s comm, on the whole Bible and Exploring the scripture, by John Phillips. Absolutely brilliant they are helping so much in my desire to go deeper into knowing Gods word and understanding it. Do you know of any other great books. As you may remember I’m really going deeper into the book of Ruth. I’m seriously looking at Hermeneutics Exegesis and Eisegesis. Really understanding these areas are transforming my studies. Can you recommend any well known Authors on these subjects. Thanks. Ian from Liverpool.
Hey friend, this video should give you the basics of how to get started 🙏 it is very key to know the background of the specific book you are reading and then ask why was this written then and then ask how does that apply to today. I hope that helps!
Those were some great tips. But when it comes to the actual verses, I have no idea how to apply them to myself. Most verses don't say what you have to do or shouldn't do. Even when I know who is writing it, and who they are writing it to, it's not getting very concrete. For example: Phlippians 1:27: Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am abasent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord, contending together for the faith of the gospel, (28) not being frightened in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction for them, but of your salvation - and this is from God. Now.. what's living worthy of the gospel? And what's standing firm in one spirit? I have no idea. And usually when I start to guess, I tend to draw the wrong conclusions.
Hey Friend! those are great questions. I too know the struggle of trying to understand exactly what the Bible is saying. But I did a video a while ago on Philippians 1 that may shed some light on how to study it to find the application even when the verses don't seem to give you an explicit answer. I hope it helps! th-cam.com/video/HXAKjwxdeIw/w-d-xo.html

Hey John! This is a hard question because it relies heavily on each individual case. But as a rule I think at least 15 minutes a day would be optimal. But the most important thing is consistency. So some days may be an hour or two, some days may be 10 minutes, but our desire should be consistency over the duration of our lives. For those who are able to spend longer times consistently I think that is a bonus! Hope this helps 😊
Hey there 😊 here is the link to where I showed an example of the study methods I explained. Hope it’s a blessing! th-cam.com/video/XLRrOt3d8ls/w-d-xo.html
What bible version says study? Make every effort to present yourself, do your best to present yourself, I am saying this because in order to quote you might need to review many tranlation. "Study" does no represent the must agreed upon translation. I agree with your message but you could support it with another verse, I do not think this one helps to the point of studying the bible. Psalm 1 might be better.
Thanks everyone for taking time to watch. I hope this blessed you in some way. I would love to hear from you!
