  • Wondering how to study the Bible, but unsure of where to begin? Reading the Bible doesn't have to be complicated or difficult. In fact, God has given us his Holy Spirit to help us understand what He is saying to us through Scripture! Even if you are just starting out, you can dive into the Bible and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you. In this video, I give you a sample of how I personally study the Bible, and give you practical tools you can implement in your own study of Scripture in order to get more out of it! You don't have to study Scripture exactly as I do-the important thing is that you dive into it and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you along the way!

Love the analogy of going back and catching up with meals! One thing i have noticed in my studies, is that when i get into a rhythm of reading in the morning, it sets my day up for blessing and fruit, but if i miss my morning reading time with God, my whole day feels off. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for me, physically and spiritually.

When I start missing days and getting upset because I missed a day, it's usually a sign that I'm doing my study just for the sake of doing it. It's a wake up call to remember why I'm studying and reading. Praise God that He gives us freedom to grow and learn at our own pace!

work on fighting the pressure of Satan in this world to pull you from Gods word. instead recognize all the electronic devices as evil and ultimately distractions from relationship with God. its not ok to say you are busy in a world were others harvest and cook our food.

I am extremely particular about books in general, but especially my Bibles. I have books that I have bought, read through multiple times, and they still look brand new (front cover still lays flat) .... so it took me a loooong time before I ever dreamed of writing in a Bible. With that said, I do not regret it. When I'm feeling down, just as an example, I'll grab that Bible in particular and just go through the Psalms, reading all the verses I have circled, emphasized, written next to, etc. It's so helpful. BUT I have come to discover that when it's time for me to sit down and have my alone time with Jesus in His Word, I need to have a Bible that is NOT marked up. Why? Because when I've tried to read through the one with notes and emphasis added, I either A) become distracted, or B) I fixate on the OLD notes when perhaps He is going to reveal something NEW. So I'll read and reread slowly... sometimes I'll write in a notepad what stands out, and then later can transfer to my marked-up Bible, which then helps reinforce what God taught me. This system has worked well for me.

I love to read the king James Bible and write down verses. There should be a new party called liberty party. The Bible speaks against publicans and the heathen. Why would someone be a republican or a democrat? I have a hard time voting for either candidate. The one thousand year reign of Judge Jesus is in this earth, not heaven. The post tribulation pre wrath of the Lamb rapture is correct. After the great tribulation, Christ Jesus shall return. Acts 15 is proof that you must believe on the Lord Jesus to circumcised in the heart and after that, in the flesh if you are a male. Verse 21 shows that Moses (first five books of the KJB) was read every seventh day sabbath. Every Christian male must be circumcised in the heart, and in the flesh to enter the sanctuary of the Lord Jesus. You are not circumcised to be saved by King Jesus. But because King Jesus has circumcised your heart, your flesh foreskin is circumcised after if you are a Christian male. Peace to you. Love others as the Lord Jesus has loved you. Repent of your deeds and forgive others. The king James Bible is the King Jesus Bible, which is God manifest in a book. If you are saved by the Lord Jesus, you can be destroyed for unbelief and continual evil works like the king James Bible clearly teaches in the book of Jude and elsewhere. Calvinism is a doctrine of devils, and John Calvin, a sundaykeeper, is likely down in hell screaming up at us. He that endures to the end shall be saved. If osas is true, why are there former "Christians"? Jesus is the author of eternal salvation to them that obey him. Hebrews 5:9. Do you have a wooden cross at your church? If you do, that is a form of idolatry. Do you use names like yahweh, elohim, adonai, hallelujah, etc? You need to repent of blasphemy and use the names in the King Jesus Bible. The cross we are to carry daily is spiritual, not physical. He will not give eternal salvation to those that continually and willfully disobey him by keeping sunday, which Hindus and other heathen use to worship their devils. The Lord Jesus, the Gentiles, and the apostles kept the new moons, holy days, and sabbaths. In the new earth, the saints shall worship God in his new moons and sabbaths. Christmas, Easter, and going to church on sundays are lying vanities that will send you to hellfire. Eternity is in the new earth, not heaven. Have a good month, and God bless you!

First of all, thank you John for decades of faithful teaching, and holy living. God is pleased! As a minister of the Gospel and an online teacher I have a progressive reading plan that allows me to camp out in different parts of my Bible every week. What you said about taking the pressure off when I fall behind is encouraging. Bible study is not a race but it is revelation. Your prayerful, careful approach is better. Hearing from God-what could be more precious? Brother, thanks again. Reverend Darren McClelland ✝️🙏🙂

I was recently saved January 27th 2023 and I started in the book of job because of the nature of my salvation. I just finished 2 thesolonians and I am reading and the am not even able to recall what I just read. Just reading through the Bible because that’s what I felt obligated to do it’s just not the same. I’ve been wondering why and even said a prayer this morning and this was the first video that popped up in my news feed. I want to hear from God. We shouldn’t care if we can say we’ve read the entire Bible or not. This video has been freeing and I am going to ask God right now where he wants me in his word.

Also, totally agree on the value of a physical copy of the bible! I get so familiar with my bible that when i think of a verse i know that it is, for example, on the page on the right in the left column towards the bottom. My relationship with my bible is so personal that i find it difficult to read from, for instance, my wifes bible. Same version, but something just feels different. Great teaching brother.

I'm recently lukewarm since if put my eye's on preachers and spiritual people and got the shock of my 42 years of life, to such an extent that I nearly lost my grip in religion. But still hold on to Jesus, So I'm now trying to get hot again, since Revelation talks about lukewarm. Thanks a million.

He's right... Last year was my first time reading through the bible cover to cover. It was absolutely quantity over quality. This year, I started reading chronologically, but I'm studying each day's readings as well, and I'm finding passages I don't remember reading last year AT ALL, because of the focus on "getting done" last year.

I don't mark my Bible. If I do, I might miss the verses that I didn't mark but that the Lord wants me to notice.
In fact, since God himself emphasized certain things in the Bible, those are the only things I want to emphasize.
    _"What did God emphasize?"_
Good question! When things are repeated (such as "holy, holy, holy" in Isaiah's vision), or when Jesus says, "Truly I say to you..."

I have tried to read the whole Bible in 1 year many times, and always unsuccessfully. I think every christian should read the whole Bible, but not necessarily in 1 year, I feel that reading 3 or 4 chapters per day to accomplish the goal of 1 year-reading the Bible makes us miss lots of important passages and reflections, sometimes I feel the spiritual need of spending more time analyzing or praying on a specific verse or paragraph, intead I feel mentally urged to skip and move on to the next chapter in order to achieve the goal. Another point is that many times God wants you to leave "the script" , the plan, in order to minister something in your heart, example: I was supposed to read Leviticus according to the plan I was following but God spoke to me to interrupt the plan and read Ephesius which was really fit to the moment of life I was going through.

I am reading through Oswald Chamber's " My Utmost for His Highest", and I have adopted a similar method of reading and studying the devotional readings that are in the book, as I do when directly reading and studying God's Word. There will be times when I will spend several days reading a particular days devotion, as I have found that the Holy Spirit will speak to me both tenderly and if needed sternly, through the messages that He gave to Oswald Chambers over 100 years ago. And as the messages, I believe anyway, have very deep roots in the Word of God, after 100 years, what Oswald Chambers wrote for our benefit, will still resonate within your soul if you have ears to hear. And I can say with complete honesty, I have felt the "fire" of the Holy Spirit on more than one occasion when reading this particular devotional book. And what John is saying, there is no need to rush, move at a pace that will allow the Holy Spirit to speak clearly to you, and for you to receive what ever it is that He wants you to comprehend.

With a poor memory, l highlight events or anything that jumps out to me. Even take notes in a notebook. I make notes on the side of the pages so that it will remind me when l go back and read that passage, what it was about. There is no right or wrong way to do Bible journaling. So long as you are spending time with God and in His word, that is what matters. God looks at our heart ❤️ 💙

I have chosen not to highlight my Bible. I was concerned that it gets in the way of reading the Bible in context. I find when I read other books that have been highlighted, I tend to psychologically give more importance to the highlighted text than the sentences around it. Since the word of God is inspired it, all has importance. What I do instead is keep a notebook to make notes instead of highlighting text. I guess a person could have 2 Bibles. One for study, highlighting all you want and another Bible that you use for reading without highlighting. Again, this is to keep from being distracted while reading, wondering what and why I have highlighted a coming up verse. I also choose not to use a "red letter" edition. Quotes from Jesus have no more weight that the text in black. For me the red lettering is also a distraction making me wonder what is coming up in the future verses. Of course I am just giving my opinion. If you want to highlight, go ahead. The important point is to be in the Word.

I never mark up any book. In college I only purchased new books to avoid getting second hand marked up (ruined, not n mint condition) books. I would throw away book which is marked up. A marked book is a distraction. And it’s not like one is studying for a test. I read my Bibles without ruining them. Besides I use commentaries so as to learn what the text is suppose to say to those for whom it was originally written. I don’t rely on my own 21st century frame of reference. Scripture does not command us to mark it up. There is nothing inherently good about messing up a perfectly pristine book.

Then read a verse, pray and wait on the Lord. Ask Him to speak to you during this. He might not every time but get into the habit of including him during your readings. Hope this helps 😀

I’m only 3 mins in and this has been a huge blessing to me! Thank you so much sir! I just found your channel and I can’t express how much I’ve struggled with reading the Bible and I’m literally in tears because I’ve been punishing myself. Bible study isn’t about reading the Bible as a chore it’s about spending time with Jesus and building your relationship with him. I know I should have already known this, but I truly didn’t. I’ve been born again for many years, but I still struggled to read the Bible. I would rather watch or listen to someone read it or teach it to me. I’ve been praying a lot about this lately and I think God sent me here as part of his answer to my prayers!
I am still in awe of God’s mercy, and grace! Thank you again!

I was struggling to read my bible. Sometimes, I felt guilty because I didn't read more chapters. And sometimes I felt anxious for some days I don't read anything. Thank you Sir, after seeing your video I felt inspired and motivated to read my bible. And I am starting now😮😊

I’m a man in my middle 70s I started reading the Bible on my iPad because I find it so much easier to read because it’s hard for me to see small print. I still have the same Bible I had back in the early 80s that Bible will be with me until the day I die.

John, may I suggest another way to set a daily goal?
Rather than "I have to read a certain number of chapters per day," try "I have to spend a certain amount of time reading per day."
If you measure your daily reading in _time,_ you won't feel pressured to hurry up and zoom through X number of chapters without being blessed by them.

Not even that, but setting out to understand the word of God as much as you can should also be a daily goal. Don't read to forget, learn to remember. It will be more worthwhile of your time, instead of spending 1 hour reading and forgetting all you've read or misunderstanding (or not understanding at all). May God bless you💜✝

Nobody should feel pressured to read the bible. It's part of a Christian's "job description" to read the bible, otherwise, you have no clue what you need to do every day for God's kingdom. There's no right or wrong way to read the bible. Just do it.

You are absolutely right, John. I've actually never read through the entire Bible cover to cover. But I've read large portions of it over and over and over. I don't read just to read. I study. I meditate. It's when you slow down and meditate, speaking and mutter the verse, that the Holy Spirit will speak. Thank you for your ministry, brother.

Good word! Trying to read the Bible in 1 year is like traveling through a state on an interstate... you get through it but you haven't really stopped and gotten to know the state. From one marker of the scriptures to another, I found what I've marked can help me share with others as time goes by. Thanks for a good video.

I think it’s admirable that you made it through the whole Bible regardless if it takes a whole year or 10. Not many even as self proclaimed Christian’s even read the whole Bible! I’m going to finally make it through the whole Bible on GODS timeline, who knows how long it’ll take

Thank you for sharing this! I wanted to do a study in Luke last year. And the Lord kept leading me back again and again to John the Baptist, Zechariah and Elizabeth. For over a month I kept reading that. And I felt like the Holy Spirit just open my heart and eyes to what they went through. I was sorta upset that I didn't read the other parts but that part was SO rich and sweet....it was all good!!

It isnt the amount of time that you spend reading nor the amount you read per day or week. Its about just being in that moment. In that moment, whether you can only read for 5 minutes, then thats 5 minutes that you get to spend with the Lord, and thats a blessing. Sometimes i dont have time to do a full study session so i take my closed bible and ask God to let me open it to what i need to read the most in that moment and its always exactly what i needed to know or hear. Sometimes just reading and reflecting on 1 verse can fill you with more light than reading for an hour. Just be in that moment with God!

I read the Bible every day as well, but I have never high lighted like that. So that is so much more absorption. Totally agree Only The Holy Spirit can reveal the scriptures to you. The scriptures are so Powerful to help us with our daily walk. Maybe something we struggle with, all of a sudden we read a passage and like we need to change that certain area in ourr lives whether it be anger or always qyuck to respond... eg I just read the other day rather listen and slow to speak.
It's such a Blessing this video. Keep doing what you do. May God continue to Bless you and keep you.
    Shalom

I cannot stand my Bible marked up with all that mess! I like it clean and fresh. That way, everytime I read the Bible, it's new and uninfluenced by previous revelation. I never understood why people hawk this. I suppose it's good for some people; but I just would absolutely hate trying to read a marked up Bible! Plus, Bible are so cheaply made these days that the highlighter bleeds through the page and you're then not sure which was the highlighted scripture. Plus, wouldn't you have to highlight the entire scripture? I mean, it's all good. Why? Why is it so important to shmutz it up like that?

I have started and failed the in read in a year plans. Time and again. This year I’m working through the Old Testament only. Next year-NT. It is much more manageable for me, and I’m seeing so many new things. Have I missed days? Yes. Thank you for the reminder to give myself some grace. God shows up daily, and that’s the win I need to focus on!
