    The rooster tail gets you some nice variety too. I was fishing for white perch and bass and I hooked up on and landed a 6 pound catfish.

    One spring evening in May many moons ago, I caught an 8 lb. 10 oz. largemouth in a north eastern Kansas county lake using a black Rooster Tail. A friend netted it for me despite the influence of many malt beverages.
    It's a killer on all species in this neck of the woods; the lure, not the beer.

      Yep, for some reason the black-bladed rooster tail is a killer! I catch everything on it, sunfish, bass, pickerel, perch, trout, fallfish. Almost anything!!

    I love rooster tail lures, they’ll catch just about anything. In my neck of the woods, I’ve caught largemouth and smallmouth bass, yellow perch, redbreast and pumpkinseed sunfish, and brook trout.

    Rooster tails are awesome! I have caught soooo many fish them. I do have one of those crazy fishing stories too.
    My grandpa lived in Tennessee before he passed. So I obviously went there to fish A LOT as a kid growing up. He lived by a golf course that was by Douglas Lake and there was this pond kinda sorta off of the course and was by the lake. So, we fished there too. Other than the fact I caught lots of bass in it.... my mother decided she wanted to go fishing. She grabbed this little poll and put a rooster tail on it. A fish hit it.... a BIG one. She fought that sucker for hours until the fish got tired. She reeled it in and I'm telling ya.... that was THE biggest catfish I have ever seen. If you look at a standard fridge, I would say, in length, it would cover about 70-75% of that fridge. And it was in a pond. Nuts lol

    My 9 yr old son & I wade fished the upper Bourbeuse river here in MO last Saturday and caught so many I lost count. He stopped at 40 just for him. Caught endless sunfish, smallmouth, spots and I lost about a 15-16" after fighting him about 10 seconds . Most fun day of fishing I can remember in a long while! My brother & I grew up using roosters for creek/stream fishing and I swear they catch more than anything else. Maybe not always the biggest, but if you want non stop action, they are hard to beat.

I just use them in small ponds for bass, crappie and bluegill and I've caught a lot on em. I know they're supposed to be for rivers and whatnot but I've never caught anything personally. I'm up here in the PNW and I've seen guys catch some big coho with the pink rooster tails (1/4 oz I believe). I've recently added them along with spinners and while I've yet to catch anything with them I enjoy the fact that they are lures and not organic. Hopefully I will have the same luck as you do in the video, I mainly fish for trout (and hopefully for some salmon)

But I live on a lake and I started my three kids out on them two lures and they got hooked they love to fish and glad I found them baits cause they are great for kids to start out on. But want to say seen you on hook set are free and glad you joined the channel they are a great group of people's in there and so awesome to we all like the same thing and thats fishing just like your channel. Growing up for me, when it came to family, was a very good time. I had people who made a concerted effort to make sure my sister and I had fun. I reside in Florida now moving from PA. after graduation, 17 years old. Places to fish in PA were scarce where I was from. The Gulf Coast of Central FL. was a paradise first viewed by a person who had medeocur possibilities back home. Anyway......
    5th & 6th grade our apartment building was across the street from a dairy farm. A small stream ran through the field which the farmer damned up to create 1-2 acre pond. My step Dad went over and asked permission to fish the pond and was given it. Blue gills, large mouth bass, bullfrogs, and an occasional turtle. Had to keep an eye open for the bovines and bovine piles.
    That's when I was introduced to hollow fiber glass fishing rod, a Mitchell Garcia open-faced spinning reel. Worms, a red and white clip on plastic bobber, snap swivels and lead split shots. The blue gills where okay to catch, but the bass weren't too fond of the worms and bobber set-up. So I got to nosing around in his tackle box and came across a white with black polka-dot rooster tail with a yellow treble feather, silver blade. I think it was less than 5 casts and I had my first large mouth. The cool thing about the rooster tail was the surprisingly slow speed retrieval you could have and still spin that blade. That was fifty years ago. Some of the other lures back then was the hula popper with rubber band skirt with a single treble hook. Other wooden poppers with a single downward turned medium shank hook (all 1 piece) and rubber band whiskers. The Mepps Minow spinner with brass beaded body, a tear drop spinner blade, single treble trailing with black and red feather. The Rapala round bill floating minnow color black over silver clear bill with twin treble hooks. It could be jerked or slow retrieve shallow diving swing bait. Besides plastic worms, last but not least were the red and white stripped Dare Devil spoons, mostly lake baits for Wallies, Pike, small mouth. The last year we went to the Pocono Mountains for vacation I used for fishing the lake a lure they called a sonic lure. It was shaped as a small pan fish with a mid back eyelet to connect your line. No bill, just body shape would cause it to dive sharply and swim/vibrate creating the sound of a fish in distress. Caught yellow perch on that lure. All baits from my youth. Sorry for rambling on, but it's hard to stop talking about fishing.
    Very nice videos.

  • @zelepuza3518
    @zelepuza3518 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you use split shots to get the lures out farther because when I was first learning how to fish I used to put 3 medium sized split shots on depending on how heavy the rooster tail or crank bait was. Now I usually put 1 or 2 especially if I’m fishing the river but I’ve never really asked anyone

      If you are using a smaller one, I would recommend a 6 to 6 and a half foot light or ultra light action rod. I would recommend 4 pound mono or fluoro. Thanks for watching!

    Good stuff! Felt like I was there too. I’ve only ever had luck with a rooster tail on a small pond stocked with trout. I’m gonna have to give it a go again. How fast do you reel to keep it from getting hung up?

    • @davidarwood6264
      @davidarwood6264 ปีที่แล้ว

      It has a lot to do with the hook size. You can always get deeper with a split weight about 6 inches up on the line. When all else fails use a roostertail.....it works sometimes and they always hit hard.

    Hey man, I’m just getting into trout fishing and I picked up a few stuff today. What line are you using ? Also do you use leader line ? I picked up a Trilene XL smooth casting. How do you cast rooster tails so far. I cannot figure it out. I’m new to fishing and they’re so light they don’t go anywhere. It’s like I’m casting an empty line. Any pointers?

    • @AaronsOutdoor1
      @AaronsOutdoor1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The main thing is that you’ve got to use lighter action rods with a very flimsy tip. This will allow you to fling the lighter rooster tails very far. When casting the rooster tails on a lighter rod you should reel them in a few inches from the rod tip and fling them. You should be able to see this if you look back in the video. It can definitely be tricky at first, but it should be much easier with a lighter rod.
