Sister Christian was perhaps partially ruined for me due to a job I had at a grocery store. I never got tired of the song but it was on the rotation overhead and I would hear it 4x a day. It got so that a buddy of mine who I typically stocked shelves with made up store specific alternate lyrics. At the key moment when we were stocking together we would sing out loud, "Krogerin'!!!!! What's your price for rice?!?!?!?" and laugh. Hope all is well with you, Peter. LOL
That’s too funny! I often make my own lyrics for songs that I am burned out on. My advice to you, never work at Kohl’s during Christmas season. I barely escaped with my sanity
I went to see "Rock of Ages" on Broadway, and in the balcony near us were the guys from Night Ranger. When they played "Sister Christian," Kelly sang along, and air drummed. At intermission, I crossed paths with Jack Blades and said, I told my wife you guys are Night Ranger and she thinks I am crazy. He reached out, shook my hand, and said, "I'm Jack Blades, and you can tell your wife you're not crazy." Excellent memory and a good guy. Evidently, a member of the stage band was a member of their touring band, and they came to see him. A great night in NYC.
Isn't it great when you run into some musicians you love and they are reaĺly cool? It happened to me with some Deep Purple members in a pizza place in CT in the 90's...me and my girlfriend were hesitant to talk to them being such big stars...we finally did ,they were so nice to us...great memories
Was playing a gig in Atlanta, just a travelling bar band (a good one!), we started the set, looked out, and Brad Gillis was sitting right out front! He stayed all night, hung out with him, he was very complimentary and couldn't have been nicer! A treasured memory!
I will never forget my friends and I sitting around the television watching "Friday Night Videos"...NBC's response to MTV. Sister Christian was so huge at the time and just before the video played Night Ranger themselves appeared on the screen and dedicated the track to the graduating class of 1984...that was "OUR" class!!!!!!!! We were so pumped and the subject was the talk of the school that following Monday. It was a magical evening and yes we collectively sang the song at the top of our lungs in my parents living room as the video played. Great memories, great band and most importantly...a great song. Thank you Professor...for the chords and the truth. Slainte!!!!
Love your channel. I had the honor to work, live on air, in radio for over 20 years. I had an opportunity to meet some of my biggest heroes, hang out, build relationships and make some very dear friends. I would have worked my entire career for "free" if I could have had you as an on air partner. I truly dig your content, back stories, interviews...never boring and more often than not...very educational. The one downside of working in the only vocation I ever dreamt of doing, would be, being on the airwaves when one of "the legends" of the time passed away by one way or another. Being the number one afternoon drive jock in every market that I worked in meant this happened far too many times. I've always hated delivering bad news, but when it involves someone you knew and had genuine feelings for at a familial level....it is devastating. SRV, Cobain, Dimebag, Dave Williams, Chris Cornell, Layne Staley, Chester Bennington, Scott Wieland, Vinnie Paul, Kevin Dubrow, Frankie Banali...so many more...but none like the gut shot that came October 6th 2020 when we lost EVH. I don't care about the gossip and all the stories of difficulty, vanity, control freak...he treated me like family.
NightRanger guitarist Jeff Watson has been a friend for 45 years. I met him pre-NIghtRanger when he worked at my neighborhood guitar shop, Sunrise Music in the Sacramento, CA area. They had quite a run as a band in those days and we in NorCal were proud of their success.
Night Ranger and Tesla are the most underrated hard-rock bands of the 80s because they get pigeonholed as hair metal, and they just aren’t. Both bands have seriously talented performers and songwriters, and I still enjoy their music four decades later. Great stuff!
Agreed. I also think Winger is criminally underrated simply because Kip is a good looking guy. They made some good albums, particularly the first three.
@@famouslastwords0791HR You bet. People forget that Winger was a supergroup; those guys were highly successful session players and members of other bands (Alice Cooper, Dixie Dregs, etc). Talented group that put out some fun records.
@@mattsmith7490Great mention! I just played Bears for my 21 year-old son about a month ago for the first time... he bought me a new turntable for my birthday, so I broke out my old vinyls. He's now a fan.
Goodbye was our senior graduation song in 1986. The line, "And it's hard living life on this merry-go-round.", always reminds me what a lot of us went through at that time in our lives and not knowing what was to happen in our future.
Growing up Sister Christian wasn't my favorite Night Ranger song. My favorite was Sentimental Street and the video where their plane crashed and they were lost. Yet another outstanding vocal by the singing drummer. That man is incredibly talented and obviously humble. Great interview
You know your old when ..... you cant help but sing it when you hear the first note start playing !! Wasn't a real fan of Night Ranger but this song is "Lightening in a Bottle" ...... whether you heard it in concert, off the radio or in a movie for the first time
Night Ranger has been the one constant for music for me for the last 40 years. I got MTV right after a move to a neighborhood with no kids my age and instantly was hooked as an 11 year old. They still bring it live and still put out quality albums to this day.
Kelly Keagy is one of the best guys in rock and roll. Loves the fans, appreciates where he is, and plays the living hell out of the drums. He sings my favorite NR songs too. Such a great dude.
I got to see Night Ranger in 1984 at Walt Disney World’s Grad Nite! They hosted different genres of music in each themed section. It was for graduating seniors in Florida. Night Ranger was the most popular band that night and it was magical! My friends and I were singing along to all their hits and when they started singing Sister Christian the audience of high school seniors belted out the song with them! Still love Night Ranger!
Night Ranger is one of those bands with two super amazing guitarists ( like Ratt, Def Leppard, etc) and each with a very diferent style. Brad Gillis with his Whammy bar and Jeff Watson with his eight fingered tapping technique and two great lead singers, man no wonder why they dominated the radio stations with some many great hits.
Sister Christian brings up some really special memories about a certain girl that I was infatuated with at the time. I was fortunate enough to take her to a Night Ranger show and that is a moment that will forever be ingrained in my memory . I love your in-depth content as well as the interviews with iconic musicians and artists from an era that was so crucial to my life. Keep up the great work Professor!!! 🤘🏻
This is a classic. To have one great lead singer is great. To have two is unbelievable. The power and energy of this song is so infectious. Midnight madness is a killer album. I saw these guys live in 2019. They are just as good now as they were then.
Personally, I saw them at the newly opened Riverbend amphitheater in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Sister Christian was not my favorite song, because of the constant playtime it got. Dawn Patrol all the songs were good, the rest of Midnight Madness was my favorites. Seven wishes not so much, because DP, and MM were harder jamming tunes.
@ProfessorofRock There's an amphitheater in Beaver Dam Kentucky that they played. They were the headliner. It was Autograph, Slaughter, Warrent, and Night Ranger. What an incredible concert.
I got to see night ranger in concert somewhere around 2004. They did a free outdoor show sponsored by a local radio station. I only knew a couple of their songs prior to seeing them, but they rocked the house and made me a fan from that day on. That’s so cool that you got interviews with both Kelly and Jack. I really enjoyed listening to this episode, and hope to hear more from them.
Met Kelly Keagy after a show in 1993 (I think it was). Grunge had taken over and arena rock was relegated to A and B-level clubs. Night Ranger was a trio at that point. Seemed like a REALLY genuine and nice guy. Was very appreciative of his audience even though it was only about 300 people (capacity for the venue).
I did my math homework to this song last year because I thought of it as a motivator to solve complex problems in a quicker amount of time. Train my brain much?
This band is closest to my heart. They helped forge a lifelong friendship with my best friend from high school. Closet to stage I’ve ever been at a concert (6th row). Criminally underrated as musicians. Twin guitar attack of Gillis/Watson is ridiculous. How can you not immediately get transported back in time when you hear Sister Christian? Amazing band. Props to POR for highlighting! 👍🏾🙌🏾👏🏾
I had the pleasure of meeting Night Ranger a couple of years ago as they were waiting for their ride to bring them to perform at a gig at EPCOT in Disney World. What a thrill!!! I was trying so hard not to totally lose my composure as I told them how much I loved their music and saw them numerous times in the 80's. They always put on a great, high energy show. They were the nicest guys and seemed very real and down to earth
I was Serving in the Military when this song came out. We had cable TV installed in a maintenance shop near the airfield. MTV running 24/7 We definitely entertained ourselves acting out MTV videos on long duty days. The 80's were a great decade for music and hair. 😁
These guys are such a cool part of my childhood. I’ve seen them in concert many times & even recently, they still sound awesome live. Thanks for the great stories!
Night Ranger is an incredible band. LOVE Sister Christian. It's an 80s classic. You are so right about the Bay area not getting the credit for its music scene. Bands like Santana, Journey, Night Ranger, Huey Lewis and the News, Starship and others came out of that area.
Wow, what a great video. Night Ranger has been a favorite band instantly when I heard them on the radio. I listen to them daily even today at 65 years old. Very sad that music since the 90’s for me actually stopped. There have have been a few songs since then but the 80’s to me was the pinnacle.
Thanks for sharing this! I gotta say Night Ranger is my all time favorite band. From seeing them at Six Flags St. Louis in my teen years to many years later being allowed to assist running the sound board while they played a casino in St. Charles, Mo. I got to meet and hang with them backstage. I was completely beside myself.
I love this song! However, my go to from Night Ranger has always been When You Close Your Eyes. This song has always given me chills and sometimes made me feel like crying when I think about loves lost.
Kelly screaming out 'your' at the end of the song is one of the best things of the 80's. if ppl havent seen him do it live check out a video from the 80s'. always loved this band.
@@ProfessorofRock Caught them at Magic Mountain theme park outside of L.A. right when this album came out right before they took off..Such an energetic show..They really gave it there all
Yes, I adore this song, especially the chorus. It's a sweet song from a brother to his sister, who laments that she's growing up so fast. Talk about relatable.
@@ProfessorofRockNight Ranger opened on the KISS Creatures of The Night tour 1982/early 83. Still my favorite KISS studio album and top 4 tour. In the COTN 40th Anniversary box set book tere is a very important interview with Jack Blades and they learned more from that tour than any other tour.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Likewise, I have a younger brother, who's two years my junior, and I've marvelled at how quickly he's grown up. He even seems older than me at times!
@@trinaq He’s got so much waiting for him in the outside world. My sister will be in 5th grade and I’ll be a senior in high school this year. I am ready, but then again I’m not ready at the same time. It’s insane how much time has passed. I’ve been motorin!
I saw Night Ranger a few years ago - one of the most fun shows I've ever seen. They played their own stuff, some Ozzy from Brad's Ozzy days, Jack's Damn Yankees hits, etc. It was a really good time, and Jack Blades is a great front man.
Brad Gillis is truly a great guitar player. I never gave him enough credit until he filled in for the late great Randy Rhodes for Ozzy. No he didn’t do perfect note for note renditions but to learn all of that material so quickly and put his own amazing flare on it was quite impressive to me.
I was lucky enough to share the stage with Night Ranger in The Dalles Oregon for The Neon Nights Concert's We were a local band. I brought all my Night Ranger LP's in hopes of getting them signed by the band and as luck would have it I met Jack Blades first. He surprised to see the records and was even helping me get them singed. Thanks Jack!
I was a huge fan from the beginning, and I got to meet them a few times over the course of their first three records. To this day I've never met a more gracious and accommodating bunch of rock stars, and there have been a few. Some of the greatest shows and greatest memories of my life are thanks to these guys. Just solid.
One of my early dates with my wife we saw REO Speedwagon, Night Ranger, and Survivor in concert. All three absolutely rocked the house. 40 years later she and I still turn up the radio when this song comes on.
This is absolutely insane, YESTERDAY I was walking to work listening to this song and thought to myself "it'd be awesome if the Professor did an episode on this song" !!! I sh*t you not! Crazy man. A buddy of mine lost his v-card to this song. Classic
I love your videos!! I just time traveled back to the Summer of 1984!! I was 19 and working at a bakery in the hip section of Albany NY!! Every time this song came on the radio I would turn it up!! My oldest brother named his daughter Kristyn (spelled differently)!! I dedicate this song to her on her birthday every June 5th!! She recently celebrated her 34th birthday!! Yes I still dedicate it to her!! I look forward to your next video!!
These guys seem like really down to earth dudes. I got to see them live and was right next to right stage and within a few feet of the drumset when Kelly sang this song while playing. It was an amazing experince.
I LOVE Night Ranger. Have seen them numerous times over the years and have every album. However, this is the one song by them I could go the rest of my life and if I never heard it again I would be just fine with it.
@@ProfessorofRock Believe me, when I find a NR interview I'm all over it. Catching their tour when they come through this August. Would LOVE to know the real story behind the Jeff Watson departure. I know Jeff has made a few comments, but Jack, Brad, and Kelly have been pretty much 'no comment' on the topic. Love your interviews, keep doing what you do. And nice job on this one.
I'm with you on this, Sister Christian is a great song, but radio ruined it for me, over played. All of their other hits seem better to me because of it.
But you're "MO-to-riiiin..." ;-) Ah, I worked in AOR radio and I wished I could have switched out half the times "Sister Christian" was on my playlist, for other Night Ranger hits.
Dawn Patrol is one of the greatest debut albums ever. I haven't heard most of it in decades but I'd bet I could sing along to every song today. My uncle was a Music Industry marketing guy and his outfit had been hired to help pump it up. I visited him on vacation and couldn't believe my luck because he had all this Night Ranger swag to give me.
I’ve always loved this music, and I think it’s a crying shame that bands and artists refuse to revert back to making music like this. Awesome story! 🤘🏼😺🤘🏼
I have a friend I just made recently and we went a road trip and we all were playing 80s music and this song came on. He immediately announced everyone must stop talking during this song and everyone had to sing along, we all did and it was an absolute blast! You have got to sing along!!!
I had occasion to meet Kelly at his home. Completely accidental. He was totally unassuming and down to earth. You would never know (and I didn't at the time) he was an icon in the music industry. Night Ranger recently played at local horse racing track and their passion for their music remains.
The most sincere and energetic rock band I have seen, and I've seen most in the last 40+years. They give it their all, each and every show. Can't wait to see them for the 20th time or more October in Cedar Rapids. Night Ranger songs are like a time machine back to the 80s, good times for sure.
Great interview once again! The Prof. is truly THE Prof.!!! As for Night Ranger, what a GREAT bunch of guys!!! I remember them from the early &0’s, was a fan back then and still enjoy them today. I wish them continued success and great health! God bless you guys!!!!
Night Ranger was a HUGE influence on me and my highschool rock band. Brad Gillis is a guitarist's guitarist and Jeff Watson's eight-finger tapping was just insane.
I guess I hate babies & kittens, because I hate this cheesefest of a song. Once I hear it coming, I have to change the station. I can’t stand this song! Especially the chorus.
What a classic! My favorite Night Ranger tune, along with Sentimental Street which I think was on their next album. The drums and piano on Sister Christian are unmistakable!
So many hits. I saw them live in the early 90s. I remember I had completely forgotten about Sentimental Street. The band had just finished playing one of their other hits and with barely a pause Jack goes: “Saw you walking out on Sentimental Street…” The place went nuts.
Been a fan since Dawn Patrol and have seen them live a few times and enjoyed it everytime. Great music and songwriting. Brings back some fond memories from my high school years.
I saw Night Ranger on the 7 Wishes tour. Great band, great song writing and great musicianship. The Gillis/Watson guitar duo was just incredible. Kelly Keagy gets my vote for greatest singing drummer.
@@frommatorav1 It’s my opinion, ma’am. I like Keagy’s voice better than Henley or Collins. Though Carpenter is a better singer and drummer than any of these guys, she was not singing while drumming most of her career.
@vistalite if you like his voice better, I can give you that. I just didn't like it as a blanket statement. At the time I wrote my comment, my username was Brian S, so I don't know why you put ma'am.
Night Ranger to me, is the, THE 80's band....I hate that I'm posting this a year after you asked for comments.....I'm a drummer, and wanting to be a rock drummer, Kelly Keagy was the one I started learning from. Night Ranger was my FIRST ROCK CONCERT, EVER! I can play every single Night Ranger song on the drum kit because of their influence on me. I saw them twice after that, once at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs right after they released Neverland. Kelly is my first drummer that I emulated and learned from. Sister Christian was the first song that I "mastered" on a kit. Hearing how he came up with things and mastered it himself just makes me more proud. Thanks Prof.
I actually thought that the misheard lyric was going to be "Motor In"...always thought that was a bizarre one. Great song, great band. The intro to "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" has always been one of my favorite to play. What great musical ideas these guys came out with! Thank you for sharing this story.
I was in 8th grade when this song came out. The music teacher got the sheet music for the choir and within two days like EVERYBODY in our small town school had a copy of the lyrics to sing along with. Beautiful memories.
i grew up in the bay area; during my high school years, the San Jose FM stations played their songs since the very beginning of the band. The stations KSJO and KOME in particular, were a big part of the band's success. Fun fact: their tour bus used to park in a lot that was visible from highway 280; it had a mural of Dawn Patrol on the side of it...pretty obvious whose bus it was. Also, there was a big cruising scene on El Camino every weekend and there was a young lady who had a dark blue Ford Ranger; she had modified the logo on the side of the pickup to say "Night Ranger" in an obvious nod to the band. This video brought back several memories. Night Ranger is one of the great bands from the Bay Area.
I’ve LOVED Night Ranger since the first time I heard Sister Christian. Course, the radio played it SO OFTEN, I got so sick of it… but that was a starting point for me. Then I searched out other songs by them and was BLOWN AWAY!! Don’t Tell Me you Love Me is STILL a favorite of mine and I slip it into every mix tape or song list I make for myself. And then I heard that acoustic guitar picking at the beginning of Goodbye off their 7 Wishes album… I bought the album in a HEARTBEAT!! That whole album was hit after hit! 4 in the Morning is such a GREAT SONG!! I like my music “loud and crunchy” but it’s also got to have a memorable melody and Night Ranger did that for me… and don’t get me started on Damn Yankees!! Jack Blades AND Tommy Shaw?! I was in total heaven…
Lol! I knew some of the story of this song back when it came out. Just the part about it being about a band member's sister. My oldest brother was very protective of his sisters ( I had 5 siblings; two brothers and three sisters) and I absolutely recognized the brother love in this song😊 He's still firey where his siblings are concerned, but then, we all are!
Fantastic interview with Kelly! I've seen many with Jack, which this one was great with Jack too. But this was a treat to get such a long, in-depth interview with Kelly. This is why I love this channel so much. I still remember when my friend Zach since 1979, came in to my 5th grade class room in 1984 showing me the tape of Midnight Madness and how great it was. I still remember it was a white tape with blue lettering. I've loved that album since, for the past 39 years.
Dawn Patrol and Midnight Madness were great albums! I loved how their two guitarist could play off each each other. Rock in America simply a classic song as well!
These guys don't get talked about enough. Killer songs. Killer vocals. Killer guitar work. I think Watson/ Gillis is the BEST duo of all time. So good and complimentary
I remember I was in 7th grade, and ‘Dawn Patrol’ had just come out. It absolutely resonated with me. ‘Don’t Tell Me’ was so huge for me. ‘Sing Me Away,’ obviously, but that whole album is still seared into my head. ‘Sister Christian,’ while obviously a huge hit, wasn’t MY favorite Night Ranger song. I put up with it, because it meant the band was getting the exposure they needed, and I was happy for them. I’ve seen them several times, each time just rocked. What a PHENOMENAL live band. First time was on the ‘Midnight Madness’ tour at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara, CA. From my understanding, Ratt was supposed to open up for them, but their album was blowing up & they apparently thought they shouldn’t be opening for anyone anymore, so they backed out & management had to find a replacement really quick. Night Ranger absolutely rocked the house, and to this day is one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. The energy on display for “(You Can Still) Rock in America” was off the chain, everybody (but Keaggy & Fitz🤣) running all over the place…insane. Thanks for this interview, so great to see the guys. 🙌🏼
This song always takes me back to my high school days and hanging out with my friends. It's an amazing song that brings back so many good memories and always makes me feel good.
I had the privilege to see them live in Ky at the Beaver Dam Amphitheater, Beaver Dam , KY. Believe it was just a couple of years ago. It was totally awesome and kicked ass. Amazing musicians, and again, totally underrated. I was shocked ...loved them!!!
What a really great episode Adam! I knew some of what they talked about, but hearing them both telling the entire story was really special. They both still have so much passion for what they do…amazing.
Always loved this band from the first album and on. Brings back Great memories from the 80's. They are one of the greatest live bands out there. Totally professional. Great interview.
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Love Night Ranger! They had a lot of Kansas vibes........... both bands have a similar style. Nice that a band had 2 lead singers like Night Ranger. Great stuff. Thanks for this Professor! And great Donkey Kong reference.
Sister Christian is an excellent tune,, and Night Ranger has a lot of good ones and the recollection of hearing their songs on every rock station in the Bay Area,, I bet was an experience of epic proportions and both guys sounded rather humble about it,, 💯 great interview Professor 👍🙏...
Your intro story and the song itself put a smile on my face. AWESOME! Edit: mow watching more of the video the interviews (as always) are sooo good! You manage to really connect and draw out really passionate interviews. You've got a unique talent and great content!
Just another one of those 80s bands that had a really good singer and musicians that clicked. I'm close to 60 now and boy do I really miss the music I grew up on in the 70s and 80s. Thank God for sites like you tube. When the mood hits me I will listen to those songs for hours at a time. I love your knowledge of music and all the interviews you have done. Keep up the good work!
Both Sides Now Paul Young and Clannad. Fist pumping at its best. Sorry for the unhinged response- must be the delirium and relief after today's gastroscopy. Thank goodness there was nothing wrong, I can listen to some more music for now.
A secret I've never told anybody... this song is only slightly better than /meh to me. I don't dislike it... I just have no problem changing the channel if it's on. I know that a lot of people love this song. I remember back when it came out people I know really loved it... I just didn't get the love for the song... but that's OK, I don't have to like every song that's popular. I'll certainly agree that this song is a classic, though, based on the love that I've seen for the song.
I can't believe you posted this on today of all days, this is a song that reminds me of my dearly departed sister Jen's birthday, she would have been 59 had she not succumbed to Parkinson's, just an eerie coincidence for me
I can't imagine this song being called 'Sister Christie'. Like he said, 'Sister Christian' evokes a certain imagery, an image of reverence and innocence.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Night Ranger is my favorite band of all time! All their songs are classics, but for some reason, they got pigeonholed into being a ballad band because of Sister Christian, and it's not fair to them. With Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson, initially, as the two lead guitarists, they put out a sound that still isn't heard today! They played off each other so well. I saw them in concert a few times back in the 80s and watching them go back and forth was mesmerizing! Then, if that wasn't enough, you've got two great lead singers! Show me another band that has a line-up like this anywhere. Can't be found. I've even had the opportunity to talk to them after shows, one of which they invited me to road trip with them to their next show on their bus! Sadly, I couldn't do it, but I will never forget that invitation! Really nice bunch of guys who are still rocking America, with new music and albums, that haven't forgotten who their fans are and what they mean to us!
You are hilarious how you describe this song, Adam! It is definitely a barn burner. Great interviews, as always. Thanks for another fun episode. Have an excellent day.
Time machine moment: I had weight training in school and Don't Tell Me You Love Me came on the radio in the weight room. It's weird how you can sometimes remember where you were when you heard a song for the first time. Such an underated band. One of my favorites by them is a little acoustic sounding ditty called Goodbye. I used to sing that one with my brother playing the guitar part. Thx as always.
I was producing bands in the 1980s. I went to see a band called Ranger at the Phoenix theater in Petaluma. After hearing their set I went up to them and asked if they were interested in working with me since I knew their songs and performances were incredible. They said they already had a deal in the works and within a year Nightranger exploded onto the music scene. It was easy to see that these guys were something special.
As a teen in the 80s, Night Ranger was and still is my favorite band of all time. Everytime I hear one of their songs I am transported back to the 80s and how incredibleand unique music was and will never be again. Thanks for the awesome interview and insight into the band Professor!
When You Close Your Eyes was their best song. You always have the big hit out of the gate (Sister Christian), but it's if an album can have that second and third hits where you know the band has tapped into something for that moment. "When You Close Your Eyes" was, for me, the much better song and what made me go buy the album, which I ended up loving almost every song on it. The followup album, 7 Wishes....? Enh. You could tell they felt they'd identified their formula (or the record company had) and it was warmed-over copies of Midnight Madness. Survivor had the same problem after "Vital Signs".
This song gave me the same feeling, it just has that great bass line and drum beat. It has all the ingredients of an epic rock song. I love it to this day.
Great almost-forgotten band from the great 80s decade. You NEVER see a cover band playing a Night Ranger song even though they had a good number of songs on the radio and MTV. Why is that? On another note, Kelly seems like a really cool, down-to-Earth guy!
You (and I) have said this a thousand times...that songs can take you back to a place and time. Sister Christian always takes me back to my early college years when I had crush on a pretty, young waitress (Becky) that worked in diner in Rantoul, Illinois where my family would eat on Sundays. It never went anywhere but I still think of her every time I hear it.
I graduated high school in 84 and this song just takes me back to those days every time I hear it. It's also one of the 80s most classic songs.
It’s a bonafide classic.
The year big brother was watching, and the Tigers won the world series. I graduated in 84 also, and was a big fan of Night Ranger.
class of 84 baby! same here
'84. Crestline, Ohio, high school bulldogs
Greatest graduating class ever
Night Ranger is under appreciated and under-rated. Awesome 80's band.
💯
Absolutely. Especially 7 Wishes
One of the best
NightRanger guitarist Jeff Watson has been a friend for 45 years. I met him pre-NIghtRanger when he worked at my neighborhood guitar shop, Sunrise Music in the Sacramento, CA area. They had quite a run as a band in those days and we in NorCal were proud of their success.
Night Ranger and Tesla are the most underrated hard-rock bands of the 80s because they get pigeonholed as hair metal, and they just aren’t. Both bands have seriously talented performers and songwriters, and I still enjoy their music four decades later. Great stuff!
Cinderella too
Don't forget Zebra either.
I’m so glad you touched on “Sing Me Away”. The harmonies on that track are amazing, and it’s a super under-rated song.
I enjoy this one a lot.
Agree,, a good upbeat tune like Sammy Hagar Fall In Love Again...
I had forgotten about it
I'd forgotten about "Sing Me Away." One of my favorite NR songs.
"Don't tell me you love me" is the song that gets me fired up.
One of the greatest guitar solos of all time. The way it builds, soars, then climaxes.
Brilliant
It’s a truly underrated solo.
This came out about the time I graduated from high school, and just listening to it brings back so many happy memories. ❤
So coo!
So you are Class of 1984? 🙂
Wasn't a real fan of Night Ranger but this song is "Lightening in a Bottle" ...... whether you heard it in concert, off the radio or in a movie for the first time
Epic all the way! Thanks Randy!
I’m 17 years old and I never miss a single moment to sing along to “MOTORIN!”

Infectious is exactly right! Where did you see them?
Personally, I saw them at the newly opened Riverbend amphitheater in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. Sister Christian was not my favorite song, because of the constant playtime it got. Dawn Patrol all the songs were good, the rest of Midnight Madness was my favorites. Seven wishes not so much, because DP, and MM were harder jamming tunes.
There are a select number of bands that can pull it off with two singers.
Awesome! Did you get to meet them?
Unfortunately, no. If they did a meet and greet that night, I didn’t know about it. But I was just happy to see them perform anyway.
Never knew that “Don’t tell me you love me”, Night Ranger only made it to 40 on hot 100. Tons of air play in SE Virginia on 99WNOR. What an epic song!
Definitely one of their best tunes in my humble opinion!
Amazing guitar work on that song!
I did my math homework to this song last year because I thought of it as a motivator to solve complex problems in a quicker amount of time. Train my brain much?
I just moved from Suffolk. I’d listen to Rumble on my way to work
Also got good airplay on “Virginia’s Best Rock...WSLQ is...Q99 FM!” out of Roanoke, Va circa 1982-83
Such an under appreciated band! Widely known for a few hits, they have so many good songs!
Awesome song! This should be on every 80's playlist!!!
Amen! How many songs are in your 80s playlist?
...it IS! ...ha-HAA!!
@@ProfessorofRock Way too many! LOL!
I know I’m gonna have to play this song at my school if they ever ask me to be DJ.
And let us not forget the biggest band in the world......Metallica!
Green Day
Never ever say Starship. It's Jefferson Airplane or Jefferson Starship.
@@roxannemoser Or just... "the Airplane."
The absolute best Night Ranger song, you are right
I like that song too
I agree, 'When You Close Your Eyes' is terrific. I'll also vote for 'Goodbye' which has been almost completely forgotten, sadly.
My favorite songs by Night Ranger are Don't tell Me You Love Me, When You Close Your Eyes and Breakout from ATBPO, that song SCREAMS!
Another great song from them.
Kelly screaming out 'your' at the end of the song is one of the best things of the 80's. if ppl havent seen him do it live check out a video from the 80s'. always loved this band.
How many times have you seen them live? I saw them about 10 years ago. Awesome.
@@ProfessorofRock Caught them at Magic Mountain theme park outside of L.A. right when this album came out right before they took off..Such an energetic show..They really gave it there all

I saw Night Ranger a few years ago - one of the most fun shows I've ever seen. They played their own stuff, some Ozzy from Brad's Ozzy days, Jack's Damn Yankees hits, etc. It was a really good time, and Jack Blades is a great front man.
That’s pretty cool they sang Ozzy songs. I’m trying to imagine Jack singing Ozzy songs LOL.
That melodic piano intro leading into the crescentic bridge/chorus is absolutely epic.

It’s one of the best parts of any 80s song.
This and Home Sweet Home by Crue. You immediately know what's coming.
Still get chills every time I hear Sister Christian...and a little choked up for some reason, Love It! 🤘
I always loved the energy and relatability this band gave us . Nights were alive , summers were vivid , ahhh
1984 was like magic.
Just solid.

They’re so generous and kind!
One of my early dates with my wife we saw REO Speedwagon, Night Ranger, and Survivor in concert. All three absolutely rocked the house. 40 years later she and I still turn up the radio when this song comes on.
That’s a great evening of rock!
This is absolutely insane, YESTERDAY I was walking to work listening to this song and thought to myself "it'd be awesome if the Professor did an episode on this song" !!! I sh*t you not! Crazy man. A buddy of mine lost his v-card to this song. Classic

Also saw them a lot of times. They were my go to band.
But you're "MO-to-riiiin..." ;-)
Ah, I worked in AOR radio and I wished I could have switched out half the times "Sister Christian" was on my playlist, for other Night Ranger hits.

The drums and piano on Sister Christian are unmistakable!
The piano is so phenomenal, like a church hymn of sorts.

I saw Night Ranger on the 7 Wishes tour. Great band, great song writing and great musicianship. The Gillis/Watson guitar duo was just incredible. Kelly Keagy gets my vote for greatest singing drummer.
Umm. Going to have to disagree. First, see Don Henley. Next Phil Collins. To top them, Karen Carpenter.
Don't get me wrong, I really like Sister Christian, too. My favorite Night Ranger song is Don't Tell Me You Love Me.
Motor Inn, believe it or not, is another name for a motel!
Believe me not many people knew it was “Motorin’” because indeed it’s an odd word choice. We all made up words to replace motorin’ when singing along.
First concert was Day on The Green
No kidding! I have two sisters myself! Thanks for watching.
I have a sister who is in 5th grade. There are no brothers in the family, just me and my sister. Even I can see myself in this song.

I can't believe you posted this on today of all days, this is a song that reminds me of my dearly departed sister Jen's birthday, she would have been 59 had she not succumbed to Parkinson's, just an eerie coincidence for me
So sorry for your loss. R.I.P. Jen 😢
I can't imagine this song being called 'Sister Christie'. Like he said, 'Sister Christian' evokes a certain imagery, an image of reverence and innocence.
Agreed!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Jill. Have a great weekend.
Thanks, @@ProfessorofRock, I will!
He said and does everything that I want to hear and be!!!!
Once the chorus comes, it’s time to burn the barn, a.k.a belt it out.
One of my favorite bands and songs of all time. My childhood wouldn’t have been the same without them!
Thank my friend.
Song is like a time machine back to 1984. I was 16 and ready to take on the world ✌️
Did the weight training coach put on the radio for you guys to listen to in class? Because what a great song to pull weights to.
I never thought I'd hear that...
The 80s were just damn cool.
Night Ranger was one of the best live shows I ever saw! They absolutely rocked!! So many great songs!!
I agree. My fave too!
Yeah it was gonna be difficult to top Midnight Madness.
Why is that? Maybe it's difficult for cover bands to do justice to their songs?
You know how hard their guitar solos are?
You (and I) have said this a thousand times...that songs can take you back to a place and time. Sister Christian always takes me back to my early college years when I had crush on a pretty, young waitress (Becky) that worked in diner in Rantoul, Illinois where my family would eat on Sundays. It never went anywhere but I still think of her every time I hear it.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing that memory. Have you ever seen them live?
@@ProfessorofRock I have and they played a great show! They toured with Boston (another one of my favorites) a few years ago.
I imagine you would sing, “Sister Becky” in place of “Sister Christian”
