Goldfish Tank Size - How big does your tank need to be?

  • In this video I talk about why having a rule of thumb about tank size is dumb. Tank size depends on so many factors that there is no rule of thumb in determining how big your tank should be. Every case needs to be looked at as an individual system with different conditions.

I just got into the hobby and knew nothing about it . So the fish keeper sold me 5 goldfish and a 10 gallon tank.( they are absolutely tiny and have a lot space to swim as of now ) and when I started doing research afterwards ( I know, stupid) I freaked out and I can't upgrade my tank for a couple of months. So I put 2 filters, aerators, 30% water changes every 2/3 days, and tested for ammonia and nitrates frequently . And my tank looks great. And my fish were happy. This video was a sigh of relief that what I was thinking was right. This video is important

I'm a scientist and your advice here really makes sense. It is the best guidance I have seen in many, many TH-cam videos on goldfish care. Basically, you are telling people they need to test the water perhaps weekly for all the parameters you have mentioned, and water changes are mainly driven by nitrate concentration.

    • @easydrawing4dummies
      @easydrawing4dummies 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

ammonia and nitrite could kill your fish very fast, 3 days ain't enough to build that good bacteria, it takes at least 1 week for ammonia consuming organism to establish, another 1 week for the nitrite consuming one. It's already been known you need at least 2 weeks tops (if you know what you're doing). You failed being a scientist reading this comment, I top my class in science (biology) and the nitrogen cycle really is a thing you need to know when it comes to fish keeping. I have a 93% percentile in biology demolishing the best of our class.

My "rule of thumb" is about 10 gallons per goldfish, but use double the filtration recommended. I only do a 50% water change about once every 4 to 6 weeks. In my 75 gallon tank I have 7 goldfish and 2 aquaclear 70's for filtration. I have had this setup for decades and my fish live for a very long time and grow to a substantial size very quickly. Bottom line, the rule of thumb is, do what works for YOU.

I work at Petco as an aquatic specialist. When people wanna buy a comet goldfish it is really funny. I say that there is good news and bad news: You're buying a 25 cent gold fish but you have to spend over a 100 bucks on the setup.

I spent over $100 on my single male betta! For my 2-3 future fantail goldfish I fully expect to spend over $300 on a 55 (possibly even bigger…) gallon tank, two-three filters (1 back of tank and 2 or so sponge filters, heater (we have very cold winters and a semi cold house), and all the aqua scraping stuff. I want to spoil my fishies.
But yeah totally agree, that little cute .49 cent feeder goldfish could wind up costing you quite a lot!

I’ve learned more about goldfish through my own research and joining Facebook groups. I only look through the files of the Facebook groups and RARELY ask questions on them. Any questions I have I go straight to forums on specific websites instead.
I really appreciate this video a lot because some of the info given to these new goldfish owners terrify them and scare them entirely out of the fish keeping hobby. Especially with the crazed fish owners who attack and berate the new owners about their set up. Most of the Facebook groups I’ve seen have just been cruel and severely judgmental. Nobody helps, everyone just launches into attack mode instead of actually educating.

Stocking and tank size for fancy goldies has always been a debatable issue. I’ve got a 260L with a Juwel Bioflow circulating 1000L/Hr housing 8 fancies, some zebra danios and a couple of loaches. Fortnightly water changes and a good clean keep it in check with ammonia and nitrates always where they should be prior to change as a double check. Only thing I’m toying with at the moment is whether I should add an air stone to make sure there’s enough surface aggitation but my filter outlet does plenty.

If i may add, another reason to have space for goldfish is that they do grow pretty big. I had a telescope and 2 orandas and they were about 8"-10" each in a 55. Smaller tanks with more goldfish may become a crowing problem for them with less space to move around if these babies really grow. They will be overcrowded. The filtration and oxygen as discussed is correct but their space to move around could be the problem and not so much what was explained in the vid.

Regardless of how great my water parameters are, I would not keep 3 of these types in a tank smaller than 75 gallons as they need room to swim.

Unfortunately I fell in love with a small butterfly telescope so that makes 8. I have Amazon swords all across the back of the 75 and have pothos clippings and floating plants. As I'm waiting for bacteria to increase (about a month into cycling) I'm borrowing some driftwood packed with moss from a 29-gallon tropical tank to help and provide more shelter for my 3" butterfly telescope.

There are actually strict mathematical formulae for this developed by professional biologists. The weight of animals should not exceed 1/1000 of water in a well-kept aquarium. For example, if you are keeping 1 goldfish in a 10-gallon (38 litre) tank, its weight should not be over 38 grams. Then for slim-bodied goldfish and koi there is a formula for estimating their weight in grams based on their length in cm. Length x length x length x 1,7 / 100. So, for example, a 10 cm long goldfish will weigh 10x10x10x1,7/100=17 grams. The 1,7 part is not strict and depends on the fish's individual build. For an adult overfed egg-laying female it could be 1,8. For a young underfed male may be 1,6. So based on these calculations a 10-gallon tank is fine for a goldfish under 13 cm. A foot-long goldfish will need a half-ton tank. 😃

At the end of the week I do a 70%-80% water change. I've been studying up on these guys and I love them so much I just can't wait to watch them grow. 😩

Ok, this is good to know. I have 2 gold fish in a 55-gallon and keep a vary consistent maintenance schedule. But, I want to get a 130-gallon because I would like to rescue some goldfish from the Facebook marketplace. So far, I've rescued a 4 year old betta and some plattys from Facebook. The 2 gold fish I have I bought. One from petsmart and 1 from a thrift store, Yes a thrift store. But I keep seeing some people who have 5 larg gold fish in a 10 gallon, who are selling or giving their gold fish for free. But I keep seeing that rule of not keeping too many in a tank. So as long as I don't brake my maintenance schedule I feel like I should be fine than. Think you.

Can you do a video on how to prepare and deal with a two week vacation? The reason why I've never gotten fish is I like to travel. And I don't want to pay someone to come in daily/weekly. I know there is auto feeders. Can fish deal with not having water changed until two weeks? I'm sure it depends on tank size/number of fish/etc (like you discussed here). But any other words of advice? I'd love to have fish after wanting them for over 50 years.

i know it has been a week later and i have no idea what happened to that fish, but what ever you do, dont put it in a bowl. i could suggest a 15 gallon tank for one? considering people suggest 10 for 1 fish i just wanna say 15 just to give it a little more space. your gonna need a filter too. im not a fish care god or anything but all your really gonna need for decoration is some realistic gravel like, grayish browns stuff like that (not a must need in color, but it would make the tank look nice), some plants for hiding spots (maybe around 2 or 3?? they dont need to be real plants), and like a big stone hiding thingie
i hope this helps at all and i hope i didnt get anything wrong

Great advice... but we all know fish trolls will be fish trolls... they think they know it all based on their own experience LOL I have two young goldies in a smaller tank but I do frequent water changes, it has a bunch of filters and oxygenation, it's not a complicated tank, and yes, I plan on getting a bigger tank in the future for them. I get that some people don't think about that whether because they can't afford tank changes or just prefer not to... but for some of us, I can get this size or that size or any size tomorrow without any problems. So I agree - don't judge fish keeping. If you want to judge, judge people who are racists, bigots, and misogynists LOL

I have a 24 literally for 3 small common gold fish give them enough food for them not to fight once a week and I Change their water around 1 every 2 weeks and deep cleaning 1 a month cuz I don’t want them to get to big. I will buy a second 24liters because I think my female(Beyoncé)might be pregnant so I can save her from my bigger male (Bruno) stressing her. Is that wrong .

Hey Luke, great video. I have a question, I have a 53gallon tank, and wanting to put in 3 fancy goldfish in, I currently have a Fluval 306 canister filter, but with what you say in your video about upping the tank filtration, what are your thoughts on fluvals FX4 canister filter? Will the flow be too strong for the fancy goldfish or do you think my current filter is perfect? I'm currently doing a water change every 2 weeks, but I only have rainbowfish and cory cats in currently (these will be rehomed before the fancies arrive). Your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
