  • Thank you to my friend, Pick Beard for lending me this set. It’s the first time I’ve played with any Southern Specialties sets, so I appreciate the opportunity 😃🔐👍

Very good kit for a beginner. Thank you for sharing.

I just got some stuff from them as cheap backups. I went with the 12 piece set designed by TOOOL adding in some deforest diamonds, euro slenders and offsets. Customer service is great they called me to check if my unusual order was correct. The longhorn tension set and the tension tool 25 kit have become my favorites so don’t let this sets selection keep you away

Ya know, I don't think I've ever seen anyone demo the single ball rake or the snowman rake. I'd love to see how effective both could be. Well, you are the first!!!

15:43 that's a "W-rake" (no clue why it's called that). but it's designed for a kinetic attack -- essentially a zip tool -- to be inserted into the keyway and rapidly withdrawn. i never had huge amounts of success with it. also, i was under a lot of pressure to get the job done quickly, so i didn't have a lot time to muck about with those.

I do like the look of the handles, but glad to know I can skip this set. As always, very informative video. Thanks!

What I like about their equipment is the finish. It's one of the better out of the box. It's 0.020" pre-finishing, and after finishing, 0.0185," at least according to my calipers. They also OEM to TOOOL for the picks and cases they sell, and they make several of the *exact* same tools that Covert Instruments makes, so I wonder if LPL bought them out.

I'll take some convincing for me to move from LLT and Multipick. BTW, Multipick are crediting you with the inspiration for a new Elite 0.5mm set. Review coming?

I love the ripple handles, they would make a great addition to a lot of the picks that I already own. That being said and I'm in the US, I wouldn't buy them, they are way too thick and I'm past picking the wide open keyways. I wonder if I can make a jig to ripple the handles of my own picks, that would be a fun project. Thanks for the review, as for that funky pick on the end, no idea what that would be for.
    Thanks!

Cool! I wouldn't mind picking up a few of there single picks and maybe a tensioner or two. They don't look to bad but I'd probably want to modify them a bit.

I’ve gotten a lot of lock picking stuff from Southern Specialties. I love their Jack knife lock picks. Their cheapest picks are great for dressing up with custom handles or modifying into custom tipped picks because they are cheap but still made of good quality materials. I hope Southern Specialties will start making their picks in .020 and .015 thicknesses. I really like their “The Force” lock pick set. There’s lots of good things going on with it. If you get it, you will want to add on “The Sith” picks and the “Longhorn Tension Set”.

I agree they have lots of good stuff, I just don't think this set is one of them.
I particularly like their jackknife set with the lever to quickly and easily lock the pick open and also easy to change picks in the set.

@@parapicktog7734 Meh, this set is okay. A person could take down that postal hook to a good medium pick. Like LN said, the extractor can be fixed too. That weird Japanese pull saw looking thing though. I’m not sure what a person would do with it. A probe maybe? I will admit that some of the pick styles are outdated and newer designs are available in their place. Is it an ideal set? No. But are there really any ideal sets? This is a set I would get to build on as a work bench set rather than leaving “as is” for an EDC set. Southern Specialties has better EDC sets available like the Classic 2500 or the TOOOL 2500 or the Force set with Sith pick add on.

    As usual a great review.
I have bought some of their jackknife replacement picks to make my own jackknife with great results. Good steel and good profiles. I do like the Snowman profile in a pick set, did file off the lower balls….. 🤔 think someone makes a tea shirt like that 🤣😂

Funny, this set doesn't have my one favorite pick of theirs. That being their 01 "hybrid offset." Basically, a sturdy 0.020" DeForest Diamond. I get the no-handle one that costs $2 each. Perfect for my style of SPP with most American Lock and Masterlock padlock keyways, and their clones.
They also have a narrower shank "euro" version of that which is fine. Their 0.025" Bogota is nice for the $2, also.
Oh yeah, they also make the Longhorn Tension set, which I personally rather like, and which (I think) a few other sellers have contracted out to use as the tensioners for their starter sets.
In general, I'd say the best value on their site is in ordering single picks, not most of their sets. The exception, IMO, is their 0.025" set that has a quad and quint rake and six turning tools.

Are any of the picks useful besides the hooks?

If it had better profiles maybe I would check them out, they just seem kinda “junky” compared to sparrows or other major brands

Great detailed review, especially of the weirdness, but not a set I will be getting. Just too redundant after 5 years of locksport.

I like their gear but haven’t tried that set yet. I’ll be excited to decide if I need to add them to my collection.
Edit 1: that’s cheating! Lmao kidding.
Edit 2: I think I’ll pass on this set but I like some of their other sets still.

Both Sparrows and Southord have good picks and sets; if you’re a LEO, military, or a 1st responder Southord offers a decent discount.
I personally have gotten into Law Lock Tools as their sets are just a bit longer and as I have big hands I appreciate that. Peterson makes some excellent picks but they’re quite expensive.

i have always found this brand to be a bit underwhelming. they seem to be ok, but nothing ever really wowed me. so, i have never been terribly motivated or able to justify a purchase any of this gear.
