  • In this video, I test a guitar interface for iOS based on the original iRig, and see what sort of quality recordings can be achieved with such a cheap piece of gear.
If you have a favourite way to record guitars on your iPad or iPhone, let me know in the comments.

Hey Pete, so here we are many years older and wiser. I watched this video because I was thinking about other alternatives to my iRig2 and this one came up in the TH-cam feed.
What is exceptionally interesting is that what prompted my interest was I was experiencing bass bleed through but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from until I watched this video and you playing bass with the guitar bleed just like I am now.
Amazing! So who knew that an ancient video of yours would solve a problem years later.
    Ps. You look so young!

Cool tip for playing around... you can connect an irig and download “midi guitar 2” at the appstore
It has a feature called “external midi output”
Basically you can control GarageBand with your guitar!
(The app is free but External midi output costs like 15 dollars...you can try it for 1 minute periods for free tho)
    Edit: bought full version
It asks you to buy 2 in app purchases to play midi output
So its 30 bucks.... worth it

      iRig 2 $39.99 from Sweetwaters
      No other things needed
The iRig 2 allows for headphones 🎧 to be plugged in next to the 1/4" guitar cable then the 3.5mm plugs into the iPad Nothing else needed
Then pick your amp & choose your pedals & play & record
The iRig 2 is a great investment

Its convenient, but the sound input quality is very much reduced when compared to a standard class compliant audio interface connected via lightning connector. This sounds a lot more treble and thin. Also keep input volume below 70% to avoid crosstalk feedback.

Great tips! Yes, compared to my Steinberg UR12 interface the quality isn't fabulous, but it's not bad for a few guitar tracks here and there, especially if you're recording some crunchy guitars.

Been using my iRig 2 for 2yrs now
Couldn't imagine life without it now
It makes recording my guitar & bass into GarageBand so easy
Also figured out how to get my Roland TK25 Electronic kit into GarageBand
Use the iRig and select a microphone 🎤 then remove everything from the mic channel & make it completely raw
      No reverb No Compression
This will allow for the TK25 to be recorded instead of using the Pre Designated Drummer
GarageBand is by far the easiest recording software on the market
It is simplified for the average user but detailed enough for the Musician

    • @PeteJohnsMusic
      @PeteJohnsMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey there. A good question, and the difference between instrument, mic and line level signals is a curly one. Most electric guitars, even with passive pickups, send a “hot” enough signal to not need any amplification. A passive mic level input however is much too low for use without a preamp. Hey I just recently bought the irig 2, and I'm curious whether I'd be able to plug in a mic (with anXLR to 1/4 cable), and record directly from that mic onto my computer? I was thinking of trying to record my acoustic drums with just one mic. Do you think it's possible?
Also I was thinking of getting a STAGG SDM70 Dynamic Microphone because I'm cheap. Have you used that before?

Hey there. I haven’t used that particular mic I’m afraid so can’t really comment.
So, you can use a dynamic mic with a 1/4” instrument jack but the problem you are going to face is the gain (or volume) level of the signal. A mic interface has a preamp which amplified the signal as it goes in. A guitar input doesn’t have any amplification, so whole you could just connect a mic to a 1/4” jack, the volume you get would be quite low and you would probably get a noisy signal. You would be. Ether off investing in something like the iRig Pre or the Tascam iXZ.
I might do a video on this soon as I get this question quite a lot.

@@PeteJohnsMusic cheers. Glad I got an answer or I would have tried it out and be disappointed lol. Guess I need to spend a bit more cash on a mixer.

Yeah, I’m all for budget and not spending money you don’t need to, as you’ve probably gathered on the channel here, but once you start recording with a mic, a device with a preamp is pretty much a must.

    Pete,
It seems as though the IRig 2 does not work on a Macbook Air (2015). I've searched and couldn't get it to play with Garageband. As of matter of fact, GB doesn't even recognize it at all. I would like to use it to record songs, however it is becoming concerning. Any assistance? Thanks, J

Hey there. The iRig 2 is designed for the iPad/iPhone to be compatible with the TRRS combo 3.5mm jack. I’m not sure that the headphone jack on the MacBook Air would support this? The best interface for a MacBook would be a USB interface for both audio quality and compatibility.

Hey there. The analog iRigs are a little on the noisy side. If you’re looking for a cleaner connection, the iRig Pro and HD range are really good. th-cam.com/video/jkAGVKOtguo/w-d-xo.html

Hi there. Yes, just send the 3.5mm stereo output to a speaker instead of headphones. 👍

Thanks for watching and your question and answer. Sammy is spot on - any device that can output via a standard 1/4” jack. I have a video where I do this using my other interfaces, but the concept is exactly the same.

It’s not working on my iPad Pro 11in. I’m using a converter to have a headphone jack on the usb c.

Oh really? I haven’t tried my iRig in to my iPad Pro via the dongle. It creates a TRRS jack so it should technically work? 🤔

Hey there. Email and contact details in the description. I would also suggest asking over at the GarageBand Users Facebook group as there are 3,000+ folks there who can help you out and you might get a quicker response.
