I lived at the dragstrip in the '80s with my IROC-Z. This brings back memories, especially the ones of never being able to beat one of those damn Grand Nationals! They were the king then.
Yep, best time I could pull in my IROC-Z in complete factory stock trim was 14.7 quarter mile and after advancing timing to 14 degrees, synthetic oils, K&N filters in the factory air lid and tire pressure to around 18psi I managed a best 14.2 time.
What an awesome video brother! I can honestly say that just about every day I think of the good ole days when foxbodies, grand nationals, Iroc's could be seen at every intersection and when you went to dragstrip or even the street races you didn't have $100,000 cars racing and the 12sec car were the cars to watch and the 10-11sec cars you were like at awe over them.... The Good Ole days 👍👍👍
Yeah it was such amazing times to be part of. Far more innocent than today. No one can ever take those memories from us and I'll do my best to keep digging through my archives and stirring up that nostalgia bro lol.

Around Indy back in the 60s and early 70s we only had five or six true 10 sec cars on the streets. Three Hemi cars and one big block Camaro and a big block 55 Chevy. Indy had a bunch of 11 sec cars and hundreds of 12 sec cars roaming the streets and drive-ins. Street racing was the thing to do and I was out every weekend.
It’s hard to find stock vs stock drag racing videos so this compilation is just awesome. There weren’t many Grand Nats in my town so the 5.0 Mustang was king in the 80s and early 90s.
I can remember going to local Buick dealerships and looking at Grand Nationals, wishing I could afford one as a 16 year old. Well, here we are in 2021 and I’m 48...wishing I could afford an 87 Grand National😆
I bought a Mustang 5.0 LX 5 speed new in 1987 when I was 23 years old. Still own it. On the street I don't ever remember getting beat by any other stock cars back then. Beat new Corvettes, IROCS, and Trans Am's. Never got to race a Grand National in it, but did get beat by one in my 1981 Z28 pretty bad before I got the foxbody. I went to the dealership the following day to look at buying a new 87 GN. But the dealer wanted $18,500 for the one they had on their showroom floor. Too rich for my blood Thats why I bought the Mustang. After trading in my Z28, I got the car brand new for $9,500. Still have it, but its not stock anymore. I use to go to Bowling Green Ky., and watch the Grand National races where Kenny Dut weiler ran his Green twin turbo GN. Many Mustangs there including Deputy Gene's fast foxbody. Great times. Some of these video clips are from Beech Bend. Who knows, I might have been in the audience. The best I could do was 14.1 in the quarter when I raced mine back then. Now it runs 10:23 at 128 m.p.h. I know I its not that fast compared to today, but back in the mid 90's it wasn't too bad.
Nice to see these regular people driving stock 80's cars and real life 1/4 mile times. Back then I had a 85 Mustang GT 5-speed that I drove across country (California) and back. It ran a 14.8 quarter mile stock. Also had an 88 LX 5.0 5-speed, 1/4 mile was 14.4 stock and a 89 Saleen which ran a 14.0 1/4 mile modded. Still have the Saleen. I would love to have a new GT-350 or Bullitt but the wife, kids and house come first. I'm just happy to have what I have including the memories. Also I'm a big fan of your videos. Glad somebody had a camera back then. Lol.
Awesome video being a teenager in the 80s those were all my dream cars!!! And the thing was you could actually afford a cool car back then! When I graduated high school and 90 I bought a 91 Camaro RS 5.0
They were just that popular at the time. Amazing to think since it’s so rare to see them today. There were more in the first round then I’ve seen on the road or in person in the last 25 years.
@@bowlofsoup12 I knew a guy that had an 87. It looked really good and ran great. He found out the frame was rotted so he got rid off it. Don’t know if he sold it or scrapped it.
@@Mr_Clean Yes, most of it was Bowling Green. There were a couple of clips that weren't. Don't know why, but you could tell because the return road was on the left side of the track and the grandstands weren't there. In several of the races, you can tell the stands are on the left side as well.
This is very cool footage. I used to take my GLH-S, my 88 Mustang GT and my 89 Taurus SHO to the track, warranty be damned! They were all sow by today's standards, but they were all, in their own way, a blast to drive. I think the SHO (wife's car) was my favorite. Hearing that Yamaha V6 at redline was music to my ears. We roasted the clutch in the SHO at the track one weekend and limped home. We took it to the Ford dealer and they replaced it under warranty because the factory installed clutch was incorrect. According to the service manager, they had supply issues at the factory, and instead of waiting for the proper clutch, they installed one from a Ford Escort, which was never designed to handle the power and torque of the Yamaha engine. I didn't tell them the clutch was cooked at a dragstrip!
Finally stocks cars racing, love to see all stock original cars drag racing each other. It's a little boring to see custom one's because there are so many that are modified and never stock.
I graduated HS in 86’. One of my first cars was an 87’ Monte Carlo SS, that I thought was “fast”. Every once in a while I’d be granted the pleasure of test driving my friends IROC-Z, and was always amazed at how much more powerful and better handling it was. It blows my mind that my 22’ Canyon, a 2WD truck, is faster off the line than both of those cars were and traps higher in the quarter mile. It’s also smoother and quieter at highway speeds than most luxury cars were during that late 80’s, early nineties era. Credit modern tech and engineering, but I do miss the snarl of that V8!!
Amazing how all this cars are still around , I bought my 87 mustang when I was 19 and the gnx where the ones to beat That's the reason I turbo charged my mustang, after I did I was the nightmare of all this back in the days , 500 plus horsepower Then the ball bearing multiple fin turbos showed up and God I went crazy, 1000 plus horsepower, had detuned for the street and still use it around the inland empire los Angeles area.
Wow, there I am at 2:56 getting stomped by a Grand National. Hard to believe this was 37 years ago. I still have the timeslip from that run. My 1985 Olds 442 was considered quick for that mid-80s era, but not "fast" by any means. That car had two things going for it. It was extremely consistent, (it ran 16.5s when new and 16.5s with 90k on the odometer 7 years later), and it was a wonderful road trip car.

Absolutely love these cars of my generation born in 1979 the footage was recorded in 1987 so I was just 8 at the time. If I can find one from 1993 when my dad bought his '93 SVT Cobra I was 14 just 2 years shy of 16 getting my DL license but my Dad was the one who taught me how to drive a 5 speed plus he used to be a street racer back before the war so with our Cobra with just simple mods especially the 3.73's he had the dealer install and exhaust (Flow Masters) makes me wonder what she would have ran with my old man behind the wheel. The Grand National was badass and my favorite was the Daytona Shelby so Buick dominated that era such a shame they DC'd them. Wish they showed the GTA Trans Am that came out in white with the gold honeycomb wheels. Those cars on this video brought back lots of memories as a kid. Nowadays everything has to be electrical with these sensors that are a nuisance. Now we are in 2021 you are seeing electric cars so sadly the sound of a V-8 will be a thing in the past and all we are going to hear is just the tires squeak then the sound of the wind while these electric cars go down the track. The future of the Muscle Car I hope will live on. I rather spend money at the pump than look for a damn plug so "my electric car" can get juiced up 😡
Reminds me back in the mid to late 80's when I was in my mid 20's. Making big $$$ as a Union Pipe-welder. Every Friday night I would race my 87 IROC 5.7 or my 88 Honda CBR1000F Hurricane up at Oxford Plains Speedway, Maine. Had a Hypertech Stage 2 chip in the 1987 IROC 5.7. Those were great times and meeting great people.

Had two Formula 350's, a '91 and an '87, friend had a G/N and others with mustangs. sold these cars for years at a few dealerships. this video is by far on spec to what these cars actually did. i'm so shocked. you guys brought back so many memories of the fabulous 80's. can watch this all day. the G/N's were in the high 13's, the 350 IROC in the low 14's. i just subscribed, finally a place/video that is true to form. props Guys.
I graduated high school in 1985, I pretty much lived at the drag strip for several years in the mid '80's. First trip down the strip I was a passenger in a '82 T/A 4 speed, then I ran my own '67 Cougar GT, '82 Mustang GT, '82 RX-7, and last my 2005 Focus ST. Our strip (KCIR) in Kansas City closed about 10 years ago. I've been to St. Louis once since then but miss it dearly.
Cool to see these cars run stock. Was almost like the muscle car era never left. And this is before all the civics and diesel trucks . Just muscle cars running the track as it should be
I owned a 1987 grand nash back in 87 I'm from the boston area were we have 4 seasons and in the fall I would run a 13.5 or 13.6 but in the summer months july and aug it would only run about 14 .5 or 14.6 that was the only downfall. but let me tell u that was one hell of a machine I had the 87 iroc 5.o tpi and the monte as 5.0 high out put, but nothing compared to my 3.8 v6 sfile turbo. I wish I was 24 again lol thanks so much for the videos.
I remember when I had my first car in 2004. It was a 74 Chevy Nova I rebuilt. I pulled a 14.4 @ 98mph. I would consistently run 14.9-15.5’s all day. When I hit 14.4 the run felt right and I felt like I hit the lottery. I use to tell everyone it ran a 13.9 because 14 second cars were just avg for the time. Crazy how far we’ve come. My 2020 GT500 runs 10’s from the factory which were straight race cars in the 80’s. With 9 second cars coming from the factory and every mustang and Camaro has 1000hp, makes me miss the simpler times like these.
Never in my wildest dream would I've hoped to see so many of these cars race at the time they were built end enjoyed. Thank you Sir for this gem and the others muscle cars videos too. Cheers from France.

Yeah, that coupe was blasting out 14.1s which was very impressive! That red '85 GT put on a freakin show too lol, 14.4 was very respectable time. That IROC-Z hitting 14.2 was good as well.
Thing is, back in the day they weren't many stock (at least Mustangs)...GN's were no problem lol. I do remember some out there with big turbos and the like though.
That t type turbo regal at 0:53 is one seriously cool color that I don't think I've ever seen before on one of those type cars. My favorite is a light lemon yellow colored one I saw once.
Same on the east coast. Some guys had Formula 350 and GTA Firebird Tram Am and Camaro IROC-Z models. The 230hp 5.0 TPI manual 5-speed and 245hp 5.7 TPI cars ran as strong as the 225hp 5.0 Mustangs.
My dream is to own a GNX. My 6 and 10 year old told me when they work they are going to get me one. The look on their faces when they told me that brought a tear to my eye because I know they are lying.
truthfully, theres as much difference in their speed as in their OEM looks. That eqautes to not much. An 86 could beat an 87 in the hands of a better driver.
I loved running the event at Beach Bend. I did all I could to spank those pesky hairdryer cars! After 35 yrs, finally got around to buying the one that got away, a two-tone 87 Turbo T. I still love my 5.0s. I hated that I red lighted in the semis. The left lane had a dip which would let the manuals roll a bit. I didn't hold the car in with the parking brake. I could have at least made it to the finals. I made every one of those Buicks nervous that weekend! Good times. Thanks for sharing the memories.
Manufacturers keep bringing back throwbacks every now and then, wish they would bring back a Buick Grand National. I’m thinking of a turbo charged V6 that will give you peak performance from the factory when running E85.
If I remember right, Alan Wong, (1987 Olds 442 at 8:22), was the Long Distance Award winner for the 1987 Supercar Showdown. He was from Honolulu, Hawaii. And, I remember him participating in a second Showdown a few years later when it was held at National Trail Raceway.

Brings back memories. Always wanted a Grand National, but was outta my reach. My 1979 Z-28 did run in the low 14s with some mods. Admittedly, these cars look like they are moving in slow motion by today's standards.
Sadly like many car movies, the only actor in that movie who was a car guy was Dennis Wilson. In fact James Taylor broke the Trans in the 55 several times cause he didn’t know how to drive a stick. Just like the F&F films. Walker was the only car guy in the series. Half the cast of the first film didn’t even have driver’s licenses when they filmed the movie.
I miss the 80s the music was better and the movies were too and the cars of the 60s and 70s and the 80s they might not be as fast as the new cars but they were cool
Dikstra had a 3.55 on the last few runs during this campaign , boost was good . Watching Vise Grip garage this week. he has a Parker his little team has been wrenching on , the newest addition was new turbo , vac lines , clean injectors , with all the electrical do dads, it’s sounds amazing .
The Grand National and the Regal T type were the original street sleepers. Outrunning Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Corvette and pretty much everything made in the mid 80's

That drag strip is home too the buick nationals every year though. So it is a home away from home for turbo buicks

That looks like beech bend raceway Park in bowling Green Kentucky which is actually just outside the factory where they make Corvettes.

So this race was actually filmed in 1987.....before the Grand National was discontinued. I'll bet FORD was glad of that! Haha!

The turbo regals were far ahead of anything being built in America at this time as far as power and speed everything else was just blowing smoke 💨

Absolutely love these cars of my generation born in 1979 the footage was recorded in 1987 so I was just 8 at the time. If I can find one from 1993 when my dad bought his '93 SVT Cobra I was 14 just 2 years shy of 16 getting my DL license but my Dad was the one who taught me how to drive a 5 speed plus he used to be a street racer back before the war so with our Cobra with just simple mods especially the 3.73's he had the dealer install and exhaust (Flow Masters) makes me wonder what she would have ran with my old man behind the wheel. The Grand National was badass and my favorite was the Daytona Shelby so Buick dominated that era such a shame they DC'd them. Wish they showed the GTA Trans Am that came out in white with the gold honeycomb wheels. Those cars on this video brought back lots of memories as a kid. Nowadays everything has to be electrical with these sensors that are a nuisance. Now we are in 2021 you are seeing electric cars so sadly the sound of a V-8 will be a thing in the past and all we are going to hear is just the tires squeak then the sound of the wind while these electric cars go down the track. The future of the Muscle Car I hope will live on. I rather spend money at the pump than look for a damn plug so "my electric car" can get juiced up 😡

Reminds me back in the mid to late 80's when I was in my mid 20's. Making big $$$ as a Union Pipe-welder. Every Friday night I would race my 87 IROC 5.7 or my 88 Honda CBR1000F Hurricane up at Oxford Plains Speedway, Maine. Had a Hypertech Stage 2 chip in the 1987 IROC 5.7. Those were great times and meeting great people.

Had two Formula 350's, a '91 and an '87, friend had a G/N and others with mustangs. sold these cars for years at a few dealerships. this video is by far on spec to what these cars actually did. i'm so shocked. you guys brought back so many memories of the fabulous 80's. can watch this all day. the G/N's were in the high 13's, the 350 IROC in the low 14's.

I graduated high school in 1985, I pretty much lived at the drag strip for several years in the mid '80's. First trip down the strip I was a passenger in a '82 T/A 4 speed, then I ran my own '67 Cougar GT, '82 Mustang GT, '82 RX-7, and last my 2005 Focus ST. Our strip (KCIR) in Kansas City closed about 10 years ago. I've been to St. Louis once since then but miss it dearly.
Cool to see these cars run stock. Was almost like the muscle car era never left. And this is before all the civics and diesel trucks . Just muscle cars running the track as it should be

I owned a 1987 grand nash back in 87 I'm from the boston area were we have 4 seasons and in the fall I would run a 13.5 or 13.6 but in the summer months july and aug it would only run about 14 .5 or 14.6 that was the only downfall. but let me tell u that was one hell of a machine I had the 87 iroc 5.o tpi and the monte as 5.0 high out put, but nothing compared to my 3.8 v6 sfile turbo. I wish I was 24 again

I remember when I had my first car in 2004. It was a 74 Chevy Nova I rebuilt. I pulled a 14.4 @ 98mph. I would consistently run 14.9-15.5’s all day. When I hit 14.4 the run felt right and I felt like I hit the lottery.
I use to tell everyone it ran a 13.9 because 14 second cars were just avg for the time.
Crazy how far we’ve come. My 2020 GT500 runs 10’s from the factory which were straight race cars in the 80’s.
With 9 second cars coming from the factory and every mustang and Camaro has 1000hp, makes me miss the simpler times like these.

I love these vids, i was a teen in the 80's mustangs& I ROCKS were everywhere with a few regals.i watched an omni GLS spank a 70 or 71 GTO at fomoso raceway in Bakersfield years ago.you should have seen the look on some peoples faces.

Turbo 80s coupe thunder bird ....4cly turbo ....that thing felt like a V8
I had the pleasure of driving an 88 Turbo Coupe with the 5-speed last summer. The 245 foot pounds of torque at at low RPMs really does feel like a V8.
Kept up with my 86 cougar 5.0...first year fuel injected damn thing whistled when you got into it.Fun car.
Just the way i remember it. Nothing was touching a Buick GN, T-type or God forbid a 87 GNX. Got to love those 87 5.0 coupes though👍
Yeah, that coupe was blasting out 14.1s which was very impressive! That red '85 GT put on a freakin show too lol, 14.4 was very respectable time. That IROC-Z hitting 14.2 was good as well.
Thing is, back in the day they weren't many stock (at least Mustangs)...GN's were no problem lol. I do remember some out there with big turbos and the like though.

That t type turbo regal at 0:53 is one seriously cool color that I don't think I've ever seen before on one of those type cars. My favorite is a light lemon yellow colored one I saw once.

Rosewood is the color. Bench seats, and column shift came on the turbo limiteds.
Back in Detroit everyone had a 5.0. Only the guys with money had the Vettes and GNs.

Same on the east coast. Some guys had Formula 350 and GTA Firebird Tram Am and Camaro IROC-Z models. The 230hp 5.0 TPI manual 5-speed and 245hp 5.7 TPI cars ran as strong as the 225hp 5.0 Mustangs.
A 87 Grand National Gnx is my holy grail/dream car!!! But where were the Chrysler Conquests? Those were awesome!!!

I went to Grand National night on a Friday at Raceway Park Englishtown NJ. There were about 200 Grand Nationals and T-types.
Didn't realize the 87' GN was that much faster than the 86'... Really nice cars.
truthfully, theres as much difference in their speed as in their OEM looks. That eqautes to not much. An 86 could beat an 87 in the hands of a better driver.
The crazy thing is I've had both and there wasn't really a difference except the grill

I loved running the event at Beach Bend. I did all I could to spank those pesky hairdryer cars! After 35 yrs, finally got around to buying the one that got away, a two-tone 87 Turbo T. I still love my 5.0s. I hated that I red lighted in the semis. The left lane had a dip which would let the manuals roll a bit. I didn't hold the car in with the parking brake. I could have at least made it to the finals. I made every one of those Buicks nervous that weekend! Good times. Thanks for sharing the memories.
I hated those mustangs, they beat my IROC! Not every time but to much of the time! All of them beat my Monti Carlo SS back then!
Manufacturers keep bringing back throwbacks every now and then, wish they would bring back a Buick Grand National. I’m thinking of a turbo charged V6 that will give you peak performance from the factory when running E85.
Love seeing what bone stock cars turned. My 91 Z28 305 Auto turned 14.76, 87 Formula 305 turned 15.88, 82 Z28 CFI turned 16.4

If I remember right, Alan Wong, (1987 Olds 442 at 8:22), was the Long Distance Award winner for the 1987 Supercar Showdown. He was from Honolulu, Hawaii. And, I remember him participating in a second Showdown a few years later when it was held at National Trail Raceway.

Low 14s were very respectable. I still consider anything under 13.9 to be even today.

Sadly like many car movies, the only actor in that movie who was a car guy was Dennis Wilson. In fact James Taylor broke the Trans in the 55 several times cause he didn’t know how to drive a stick. Just like the F&F films. Walker was the only car guy in the series. Half the cast of the first film didn’t even have driver’s licenses when they filmed the movie.

Dikstra had a 3.55 on the last few runs during this campaign , boost was good . Watching Vise Grip garage this week. he has a Parker his little team has been wrenching on , the newest addition was new turbo , vac lines , clean injectors , with all the electrical do dads, it’s sounds amazing .
The Grand National and the Regal T type were the original street sleepers. Outrunning Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Corvette and pretty much everything made in the mid 80's
