It has become one of my all time favorite movies. It's simply beautiful at every level... With the underlying warning inherent to human tendency. The fun part is when you realize the aliens always knew she'd figure it out... Because they'd already seen her do it.
"Because they'd already seen her do it" Yesn't. The ability to see time is not quite so fixed as the movie explicitly makes it out to be. By her own decisions she took action - to depict what she sees as something fixed implies she has no free will, which she clearly does to keep talking to the Chinese general while staring down the barrel of a machine gun and being told to stop. The very fact that she could see that future where he told her both his private number and the last words of his wife implies that they can see many potential futures with the ability to instinctively 'pick' the ones that are conducive to their desired outcome.
@@mnomadvfx she doesn't have free will. What she has, within a human being's limited multi-spatial awareness, is near-free form realization, and the ability to be coached into that realization.

@@Braincleaner I really like the subtle scenes nudging the viewers subconsciously into a specific thought pattern. Like for example in the beginning when Louise goes to work even after the Alien's arrival and being seemingly alone with that decision. The viewer could interpret this as Louise seeking consolation in her career after loosing her daughter. All these and other scenes with undertones could be seen as kind of 4th wall breaking. A subtle hint how easily one can misinterpret what you experience.
This was the first of Villeneuve's films that I saw, and it pretty much immediately sold him as a must-watch director. The visual effects, the cinematography, the score, the performances, all exceptional. The fact that Amy Adams didn't get a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her work here is just unforgivable
I honestly thought the same about Villeneuve until I watched Dune. I can only hope that it's poor narrative quality is explained by Warner Bros producers sticking their needles in to the production and forcing his hand as the De Laurentis family did against David Lynch when he made his Dune adaptation in the 80s - because Dune: Part One falls considerably below both my expectations for a Dune adaptation, and of Villeneuve himself as a director.
This may have been my first too and I am totally with you. I was so blown away that when Dune was announced I was super excited and felt he would be the right one to do it.. I think if anyone else was announced I would have been afraid and dreading what was probably to come. Unlink Mountain I was not disappointed in the end as I thought Dune was spectacular and am so looking forward to the next half.
Dune was amazing, and Part 1 is even better when you watch Part 2 right afterwards…just builds and builds. Denis has a great ability to bring you in close and then show a great long shot. The individual, then the world. He’s also amazing in how he weaves music in and out, which adds so much to the experience. Howard Shore said about Peter Jackson that he can’t write or poplar a lick of music, but he sure know what he wants in his movies and what to ask for. I imagine the same for Denis.

This is by far the best Arrival reaction. You two are evidently very smart and knowledgeable and just ‘got’ the movie and beyond (past and fugue are happening at the same time always, etc). I think it's a rare film that blows your mind and your heart at the same time. The horrific McGuffin of that terrible gift, to be able to see the future knowing that it is a fixed point. To know that the worst pain you can imagine will come, but embracing it because of the joys and love you know will precede it. I cry every time - she knows Jeremy Renner will love her and why he'll eventually hate her. Why her daughter will die and that she cannot stop it. But she welcomed it all. Mind blown.
The Arrival is based on a short story (about 40 pages) called "The 'Story of Your Life". There is a lot of similarity between the two but there are significant differences. I highly recommend reading it. You then get the human and alien experience of the story. The first time you experience the story you have the human point of view. You don't know what happens and you watch the story unfold over time. The second time through you have the alien point of view. You know what will happen and you are waiting to see how the pieces fill in. This movie was a great experience for me because I experienced it twice in different formats.
Definitely in my top ten of all time. By FAR the best "first contact" movie. I was going thru the end of a marriage when I came across this movie. I ended up watching it every day for the next 2 years +, while struggling with severe depression and suicidal ideation. This movie kept me alive. You guys did great, so thank you. Now I am stuck on watching other people's reactions to Arrival. 😁😍
Great reaction! This is my #1 favourite movie. And as someone who speaks 6 languages, I can confirm that each language I speak affects my perception and how I think. And remember when Ian quoted Louis's book "language is the first weapon drawn in a conflict" that's foreshadowing...
I believe General Shang gets half flashes, enough to understand the process but not enough to fully immerse himself or live in the same way that Louise does. Also, sometimes we think of fate being binary with the freedom of choice, rather than interconnected concepts. Fate can also be understood as an EFFECT of all our individual choices. We would not have that particular fate, if we had not made those choices. We can only make the choices we do, based upon or current experience and perceptions. I think if we stopped thinking of life as a linear process, but rather a circle of the present, then death becomes even more intrinsic to life, and even after someone is gone, they still live on within you.
Side note, apparently Max Richter thought On The Nature of Daylight was overexposed (as you noted, it is pretty recognizable) and initially rejected its use in Arrival. Villenueve flew out to explain how it bookends the film and how important it is to the impact of the story, and Richter changed his mind.
@@setaside2 The academy is largely an in joke for over politicisation in Hollywood these days, and something of a metaphor for the modern world being about appearances rather than performance. If it's not got a disabled person overcoming a condition, or a minority group success story they will barely touch the thing.
I really love this underrated film. I like how it's a "sci-fi" movie, but it's very subdued. There are no crazy action scenes, no scary aliens, etc. I remember watching this in the cinema with my mother. At the end of the movie, everyone just sat there, quiet and teary-eyed and absorbing what had happened. And then everyone broke into applause.
This is one of the best intellectual sci-fi movies of all time. 4:00 it's actually so they can talk to the world instead of just one nation. Like if aliens came down (with positive intent) and talked to just one nation it would in all likelihood lead to a massive world war. This movie masterfully used that real world theory in this movie. Could you really imagine if aliens arrived and just talked to a country like Russia, it would be the end of human kind.
I've been watching many reactions to Arrival because I want to see someone who hears that lady on the radio asking "If this is a peaceful first contact, why send twelve?" and then reacts with "Why not?" ^^'
Sci-Fi fan for over 60 years, and this is Perhaps my favorite movie, now in my collection with the classics of the 1950’s… After many viewings, I can think of only one thing I would have like to see different: at the end, when Ian asks if they should make a baby, the fade-out should have happened BEFORE she answered, so we would be left to think about the concept of Fate and whether the Future is pre-determined.
I'm so glad the two of you reacted to this movie! It has been under the radar for so many reactors, but now is starting to be seen more often. It is such a creative and intelligent film and it's a delight to re-experience it with you again for the first time. 😃
How Villeneuve's movies are changing the shape of human or alien spaceships... not those gigantic, bulky spaceships... instead, the designs are more fluid, more organic. Spacechips in this movie and Dune look like beans or seeds, simple, nothing very strange or extravagant. Can't wait, simply can't wait for Rendezvous with Rama to come. Knowing that this guy will direct that adaptation is simply the best news I can get to know.
I love the 'Abbott & Costello' reference, which is SO apropos. Abbott & Costello's most famous bit was "Who's on First", which is a frustrated communication due to misunderstanding terms. "There is no time." _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ My take: The Heptapod Language restructures your brain so that your perception of time changes. Time is not linear, it's a constant. Everything that ever did or will happen is already set. There are no 'timelines', there is no 'choice'. It is as it always is. So there are no 'time paradoxes' because there is no changing what is set. Hannah is unstoppable because her existence is a fixed point in the time constant. There is no 'decision' about having her, and nothing that can change the duration or condition of her life. So, within that time constant, our finite duration of living exists. And with the help of the Heptapod Language, we each can experience our own life in its entirety forever. There is no 'death' because in a time constant there is no 'ending'. You just move your consciousness to any point within that circle/bubble/whatever of the life you exist in. Just like the Language reads the same wherever you want to begin, you live your life at whatever point you want to. You don't see THE Future, you just see the range of your own life. You communicate with others whose lives extend beyond the range of your own or don't extend as far as your own. Talk about a game of Telephone; messages from areas of the time constant that your life does not reach. So, for Louise, the entirety of Hannah's life is contained within the range of Louise's life. It means she can re-experience every moment of shared time with her daughter. So, for Louise, her daughter never dies. Ian quantified, but did not immerse himself, in the Language; he never learned it. So, Ian is still stuck in linear time. For him, Hannah dies. But not for Louise. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________ Some Hot Takes: "Arrival" does not reference the aliens showing up to Earth. It references Louise's full understanding of the Language; THAT is when everything changes for Earth. Louise has that moment of reverie where she stops Ian from talking to her. She sees her book, she sees herself teaching the Language. At that moment, she has grasped ('grokked') the entirety of it all at once. The Language has 'arrived' in full within her consciousness. 'Space' travel for the Heptapods is a matter of moving their consciousness within their individual lifetimes. There's a reason their ships are non-polluting and quiet; they look at being at Earth, and they're here. They move their awareness to being home or elsewhere, and they dissipate and are gone. Travel is a matter more of time than space. I question whether the 'Heptapod' Language originated with the Heptapods. There is no correlation between the sounds they make to communicate between Heptapods and the 'written' Language. I think some other species taught them. Abbott always knew its life duration completes on Earth, from a bomb. But he lives on within the circle/bubble/whatever of his lifespan. There is no time, so there is no death.
Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight is a fairly simple piece, as classical music goes, but it conveys so much emotion. There’s a video of them recording the piece at Deutsche Grammophon with Tilda Swinton reading, Max Richter on electronics, and Natalia Bonner lead violin, Luisa Fuller 2nd violin, John Metcalfe on viola, and Philip Shepherd, Ian Burdge, and Chris Worsey on cellos. It’s cool watching them perform this piece.
The Australian Aboriginal language doesn’t use the words “left” or “right”. Instead they use compass positions, and would say “The cereal aisle is on your east.” instead of “The cereal aisle is on your left.”. That means that to speak directionally their minds must always know which way they are facing. It makes them superior naval navigators, an example of how a difference in language can change perception in the human brain. I believe I heard that this fact influenced the writing of the short story “Story of Your Life” which is the basis for this movie.
I've always wondered how/why she told Ian about their daughter's death when she did, I'm guessing she held off as long as she could because she wants to preserve their family as long as possible, and she knows telling him ends things. So I wondered if maybe she just couldn't lie to him anymore, or accidentally told him... but you guys talking about him learning the language, I wonder if he started getting flash-forwards and learned at least part of it on his own, so she had no choice but to tell him then.
One of my favourite scifi movies. I love that something so huge as first contact ends up being like a backdrop for a more personal, emotional and philosophical story. I've seen it dozens of times by now and even knowing everything that's coming it never fails to touch me and make me think. Would you change anything about your future? _Could_ you even change anything?
The movie is based on a scientific hypothesis called the deterministic universe, which states that past, present, and future all exist at once, but our human brains only perceive the present. Speaking as a parent, I agree with Louise. I would rather let my child exist and thrive…even if for a limit time. The purpose of life isn’t to live forever, but to live well. And try to make life a little better when we leave than when we arrived. After all, we are all just stories in the end. Let’s make it a good one.
The information they’d have on us would be radio waves from trench warfare of WWI, the Hitler speeches and allied/axis radio channels of WWII, the Vietnam war, and others like that. They don’t see Spider-Man and Independence Day, but our true much more atrocious ways. Movies underplay our violence and evils
Great reaction to an excellent film. Its one of my favorites, and it moves me tears every time. Amy Adams was robbed of an Oscar nomination that year. Her performance is what makes the film work.
Should they have shown final scenes of Louise convincing doctors what she knows will happen? Knowing it's unstoppable tugs at the strings but if she can change that after with her new abilities.. It fits the story and makes it a perfect ending. 🤔😏

Truly a brilliant film… and the breadcrumbs are there but not in such an obvious way, so that when it hits, it hits like a ton of bricks. Since you obviously have great taste, some absolutely BRILLIANT films to check out (all involve an essence of fantasy): “STRANGER THAN FICTION”, “PLEASANTVILLE”, “AMELIE” and “CHILDREN OF MEN”…. You’ll never forget any of these amazing films!

This is in my top 5 films of the last decade. I'm so glad you finally saw it. It is based on a short story in the book Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. Highly recommend the read.
This movie blew my mind when I first saw it.. and it is exactly why when Denis Villeneuve said he was going to adapt Dune that I knew it was going to be in excellent hands. At the time I remember being upset that this movie didn't seem to be as big or as popular as it should have been.. literally in my top list of films. Such an amazing cautionary tale of how to react and not react when and if this ever comes to pass.
and the realization that they broke up because she told him what happens to their daughter and he couldn't handle it and their daughter knew her father couldn't look at her the same from some reason.. and he needed to remove himself from the situation or he would only make it worse or at least believing that to be.. so amazingly complicated and subtle and heartbreaking
The Kurt Vonnegut novel (and decent 70’s movie) Slaughterhouse 5 is a really cool look at non linear time. Goes without saying, the book is better, but definitely worth a watch of the movie if you like this kind of stuff.
I get the impression that human technology will surpass the aliens and they might encounter other aliens which are a threat to them, and eventually us if we don't help them.
Have you seen Watchmen (the series)? There is a character in it that experiences time all at once. I love this movie. I like that the aliens wanted us to work together to move forward. The stuff about the daughter makes me cry.
What a great hard sci-fi movie. Great the way that it was constructed and played out. Master class in storytelling with the future coming at the beginning. I think that Louise was exposed to something special when she started to unlock the language and the heptapods did something to her. I don't think she can change the future. It's pretty much locked and nothing you can do to change it.
Fuck cancer is right! I lost my mom to cancer recently and as a single dad of 3 amazing daughters that are my life, my everything , this movie DESTROYS me! It’s a hard one to watch thinking of my babies❤️❤️❤️ one of my absolute favorite movies even as hard as it is to watch! That song ,..goodness!!! I love this movie! Another that messes with your understanding is "Predestination". It's a bit more complex but considering I've watched it many more times than this must mean It grabbed me totally. I really recommend it!

All-time top 3 movie for me. Every frame is perfect. Denis Villeneuve is a sci-fi Jedi master. He should never direct anything else. I love this movie more each time I see it. A masterpiece.

I never realized this film could be considered a comedy until I saw this dimwit grinning and cracking jokes through the entire film.
One of the greatest movies ever made. It's cerebral but damn this ending and the cinematography is a masterpiece.

I really love this underrated film. I like how it's a "sci-fi" movie, but it's very subdued. There are no crazy action scenes, no scary aliens, etc.
I remember watching this in the cinema with my mother. At the end of the movie, everyone just sat there, quiet and teary-eyed and absorbing what had happened. And then everyone broke into applause.
This is one of the best intellectual sci-fi movies of all time.
4:00 it's actually so they can talk to the world instead of just one nation. Like if aliens came down (with positive intent) and talked to just one nation it would in all likelihood lead to a massive world war. This movie masterfully used that real world theory in this movie. Could you really imagine if aliens arrived and just talked to a country like Russia, it would be the end of human kind.
You knew that the opening music is Max Richter, that's great! Yeah, this song is just perfect sadness :)
I've been watching many reactions to Arrival because I want to see someone who hears that lady on the radio asking "If this is a peaceful first contact, why send twelve?" and then reacts with "Why not?" ^^'

Sci-Fi fan for over 60 years, and this is Perhaps my favorite movie, now in my collection with the classics of the 1950’s… After many viewings, I can think of only one thing I would have like to see different: at the end, when Ian asks if they should make a baby, the fade-out should have happened BEFORE she answered, so we would be left to think about the concept of Fate and whether the Future is pre-determined.
I'm so glad the two of you reacted to this movie! It has been under the radar for so many reactors, but now is starting to be seen more often. It is such a creative and intelligent film and it's a delight to re-experience it with you again for the first time. 😃
How Villeneuve's movies are changing the shape of human or alien spaceships... not those gigantic, bulky spaceships... instead, the designs are more fluid, more organic. Spacechips in this movie and Dune look like beans or seeds, simple, nothing very strange or extravagant. Can't wait, simply can't wait for Rendezvous with Rama to come. Knowing that this guy will direct that adaptation is simply the best news I can get to know.
Denis is a goddamn genius with any budget you give him. True master of his craft

My take:
The Heptapod Language restructures your brain so that your perception of time changes.
Time is not linear, it's a constant.
Everything that ever did or will happen is already set. There are no 'timelines', there is no 'choice'. It is as it always is. So there are no 'time paradoxes' because there is no changing what is set. Hannah is unstoppable because her existence is a fixed point in the time constant. There is no 'decision' about having her, and nothing that can change the duration or condition of her life.
So, within that time constant, our finite duration of living exists. And with the help of the Heptapod Language, we each can experience our own life in its entirety forever. There is no 'death' because in a time constant there is no 'ending'. You just move your consciousness to any point within that circle/bubble/whatever of the life you exist in. Just like the Language reads the same wherever you want to begin, you live your life at whatever point you want to.
You don't see THE Future, you just see the range of your own life. You communicate with others whose lives extend beyond the range of your own or don't extend as far as your own. Talk about a game of Telephone; messages from areas of the time constant that your life does not reach.
So, for Louise, the entirety of Hannah's life is contained within the range of Louise's life. It means she can re-experience every moment of shared time with her daughter. So, for Louise, her daughter never dies. Ian quantified, but did not immerse himself, in the Language; he never learned it. So, Ian is still stuck in linear time. For him, Hannah dies. But not for Louise.

Some Hot Takes:
"Arrival" does not reference the aliens showing up to Earth.
It references Louise's full understanding of the Language; THAT is when everything changes for Earth.
Louise has that moment of reverie where she stops Ian from talking to her. She sees her book, she sees herself teaching the Language. At that moment, she has grasped ('grokked') the entirety of it all at once. The Language has 'arrived' in full within her consciousness.
'Space' travel for the Heptapods is a matter of moving their consciousness within their individual lifetimes.
There's a reason their ships are non-polluting and quiet; they look at being at Earth, and they're here. They move their awareness to being home or elsewhere, and they dissipate and are gone. Travel is a matter more of time than space.
I question whether the 'Heptapod' Language originated with the Heptapods.
There is no correlation between the sounds they make to communicate between Heptapods and the 'written' Language. I think some other species taught them.
Abbott always knew its life duration completes on Earth, from a bomb. But he lives on within the circle/bubble/whatever of his lifespan. There is no time, so there is no death.

Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight is a fairly simple piece, as classical music goes, but it conveys so much emotion. There’s a video of them recording the piece at Deutsche Grammophon with Tilda Swinton reading, Max Richter on electronics, and Natalia Bonner lead violin, Luisa Fuller 2nd violin, John Metcalfe on viola, and Philip Shepherd, Ian Burdge, and Chris Worsey on cellos. It’s cool watching them perform this piece.
That movie is in my top 3 of all time.

After seeing it once, every time I've seen it since, knowing what's going on... tears. Every time.
The Australian Aboriginal language doesn’t use the words “left” or “right”. Instead they use compass positions, and would say “The cereal aisle is on your east.” instead of “The cereal aisle is on your left.”. That means that to speak directionally their minds must always know which way they are facing. It makes them superior naval navigators, an example of how a difference in language can change perception in the human brain. I believe I heard that this fact influenced the writing of the short story “Story of Your Life” which is the basis for this movie.
I've always wondered how/why she told Ian about their daughter's death when she did, I'm guessing she held off as long as she could because she wants to preserve their family as long as possible, and she knows telling him ends things.
So I wondered if maybe she just couldn't lie to him anymore, or accidentally told him... but you guys talking about him learning the language, I wonder if he started getting flash-forwards and learned at least part of it on his own, so she had no choice but to tell him then.
One of my favourite scifi movies. I love that something so huge as first contact ends up being like a backdrop for a more personal, emotional and philosophical story.
I've seen it dozens of times by now and even knowing everything that's coming it never fails to touch me and make me think. Would you change anything about your future? _Could_ you even change anything?
The movie is based on a scientific hypothesis called the deterministic universe, which states that past, present, and future all exist at once, but our human brains only perceive the present. Speaking as a parent, I agree with Louise. I would rather let my child exist and thrive…even if for a limit time. The purpose of life isn’t to live forever, but to live well. And try to make life a little better when we leave than when we arrived. After all, we are all just stories in the end. Let’s make it a good one.
The information they’d have on us would be radio waves from trench warfare of WWI, the Hitler speeches and allied/axis radio channels of WWII, the Vietnam war, and others like that. They don’t see Spider-Man and Independence Day, but our true much more atrocious ways. Movies underplay our violence and evils

I loved Arrival then and after watching Blade Runner 2049, I knew Denis Villeneuve was perfect for Dune.

Great reaction to an excellent film. Its one of my favorites, and it moves me tears every time. Amy Adams was robbed of an Oscar nomination that year. Her performance is what makes the film work.
Should they have shown final scenes of Louise convincing doctors what she knows will happen? Knowing it's unstoppable tugs at the strings but if she can change that after with her new abilities.. It fits the story and makes it a perfect ending. 🤔😏

This and Blade Runner 2049 are basically masterpieces. Everything DV does is amazing but those two in particular.
I would think she’d “always” know the General’s number once he gave it to her, including just before meeting him. But that’s just me.

A movie that is so well done, it'll last time. A very rewatchable movie.
I think the movie begs the question of how a timey wimey (Dr)Who's on first would be performed by Abbot and Costello.
His wife's dying words are, "in war, there are no winners, only widows."
Truly a brilliant film… and the breadcrumbs are there but not in such an obvious way, so that when it hits, it hits like a ton of bricks.
Since you obviously have great taste, some absolutely BRILLIANT films to check out (all involve an essence of fantasy): “STRANGER THAN FICTION”, “PLEASANTVILLE”, “AMELIE” and “CHILDREN OF MEN”…. You’ll never forget any of these amazing films!

This is in my top 5 films of the last decade. I'm so glad you finally saw it. It is based on a short story in the book Stories of Your Life and Others by Ted Chiang. Highly recommend the read.

This movie blew my mind when I first saw it.. and it is exactly why when Denis Villeneuve said he was going to adapt Dune that I knew it was going to be in excellent hands. At the time I remember being upset that this movie didn't seem to be as big or as popular as it should have been.. literally in my top list of films. Such an amazing cautionary tale of how to react and not react when and if this ever comes to pass.
and the realization that they broke up because she told him what happens to their daughter and he couldn't handle it and their daughter knew her father couldn't look at her the same from some reason.. and he needed to remove himself from the situation or he would only make it worse or at least believing that to be.. so amazingly complicated and subtle and heartbreaking

The Kurt Vonnegut novel (and decent 70’s movie) Slaughterhouse 5 is a really cool look at non linear time. Goes without saying, the book is better, but definitely worth a watch of the movie if you like this kind of stuff.

I love this movie. I like that the aliens wanted us to work together to move forward. The stuff about the daughter makes me cry.
What a great hard sci-fi movie. Great the way that it was constructed and played out. Master class in storytelling with the future coming at the beginning. I think that Louise was exposed to something special when she started to unlock the language and the heptapods did something to her. I don't think she can change the future. It's pretty much locked and nothing you can do to change it.
Fuck cancer is right! I lost my mom to cancer recently and as a single dad of 3 amazing daughters that are my life, my everything , this movie DESTROYS me! Also Prisoners is also AMAZING and ANOTHER movie as a father that destroys me in other ways ,..I wonder if Vellenue (sp?) had some tragedy with a child becasue these 2 movies destroy me as a father of daughters in a way nothing else has except for maybe that mark whalberg movie about the kidnapped daughter that is trying to solve her murder and guide her dad to the killer, good Lord that one is the hardest for me to watch and the ending hurts. honestly this is my favorite film of his, followed by sicario. i'm a sucker for sincere conclusion to a story & tiny bit saccharine. throw a little elements of genre in there and we're good.
