Excellent video. All other experts assume a lot or expect from viewers.. if I knew, why would I watch it!! You gave me step by step on how tos. This helps a lot for newbie like me.. Thank you again.
Hi. I've been trying to setup my UMIK-1 and REW on my Macbook Pro 13" 2020. However, the 8 ch, 16-interger options are not available for selection. Any advise / workaround on that? Thank you
I've been using REW for a few days now. I am able to calibrate my fronts and Subwoofers, but HOW do I calibrate the side and rear speakers?? I've never heard any pink noise come from them. My soundcard output tab on REW only has L R L&R.
Thanks for this...great tutorial. All the videos I've seen so far only calibrates for the multi-sub integration. By the way do you plan to add the MiniDSP 2x4 HD to your system? Many reviewers seem to use it to help fine tune the subwoofer.
Even in 2024, not all AVRs accommodate independent tuning of multiple subs, so the 2x4HD is still a viable alternative for aligning and PEQ of up to 4 subs from a single LFE channel output.
I’m in 5.1.2. Whenever i set that in configuration in MacBook even if i set it to 7.1 rear surround like you mention, When setting up speakers in REW and playing the test tones. It played left surround and left back on same channel. Same with right surround and right back. Can’t figure how to pick up the correct two channels
In a 7.1 system, there are a four speakers at the back, left back and left surround, right back and right surround. If you are using a 5.1.2 setup, you only have two speakers at the back - left surround and right surround. Playing a 7.1 signal through your receiver will mean that it will play the surround and back channels through the same speaker.
Nice video. Well explained. But SPL meter apps are not ever recommended as they are not accurate. Particularly in the lower octaves. This is a process of precision. So I’d spend the $100 on the UMIK1
I'm 6 minutes in and was hoping and expecting you would cover all of the steps, but you left off the critical steps of calibrating the soundcard and importing the microphone calibration file. A lot of people going into this process are going to think you can just plug one of these mics in uncalibrated and expect accurate measurements. Before I realized that I almost bought a mic off ebay with no included mic-specific calibration file - big mistake! I wised up and ordered a Sonarworks mic brand new that has a serial number lookup to get that custom file. The soundcard calibration seems somewhat important as well. My advice is make a "Part 0" video where you go over these crucial setup steps.
I stand corrected: you get into these steps at around the 13 minute mark. 6 minutes in it looked like you had already done that stuff and were about to run the main measurements. Maybe it would be helpful to add an index with links to each section so people like me who are struggling with specific steps can find them.
I know this is an older video, but, items you are selecting are on a Mac and I’m using a Windows laptop, so I’m not getting to make these adjustments. I need step by step instructions for a Windows laptop.

Great video, no one else showed how to set up 7.1 system !!!! Thank you so much excited..
best REW tutorial I have seen
You say 75dB on the check level part, but how do you end up getting -18.7dB? I'm confused on how you got to 75dB.
Excellent one
Great video man! I wanna do this in my room. So this series is definitely going to help me out. Thank you!
thanks for watching!

eventually but I may just wait until I upgrade to a Pre-pro that has more powerful EQ. Im looking at the new Anthem Processor or Arcam
@@The.Home.Cinema.Engineer Waiting for the REW test results and tweaks that you did.

If I don't have an SPL meter how do I set SPL level? Can I use the umik1 with a software to measure SPL?
Yes you can or you can use paid for apps on your phone

Good video, but I think you put the mic calibration file into the wrong place. It should go on the mic tab not in the sound card calibration section
I’ll have to double check because I’m sure I loaded it there but I may be incorrect. Thanks for watching!
