controlled chaos, dimly lit, gentle beast, free reign, baby mama, Freudian slip... that last one was just icing on the cake. (trapped in a never ending pun)
If ‘still moving’ is not allowed - because ‘still’ here doesn’t mean stationary, but continuous - then how come you allow ‘pretty ugly’? Because ‘pretty’ there doesn’t mean good-looking, but quite.
Sahir & Magsat: i go with not an oxymoron because I'm 68 and my friends and I have used pretty to mean something similar to "quite" for all of my "pretty" long life, and in the case I just proposed "quite little long" life (or anything else) is technically not an oxymoron because although "quite little" and "long" are opposites, one is more than one word. We're looking for paired opposites, correctly named "antonyms".
This is definitely my favorite of all the WhatYouOughtToKnow-videos...even though it's been online for several years and I have watched it time and again, I still find it as funny and interesting as the first time I watched it.
My husband's favorite is "awful" as really it comes from "awe" which means to have a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder," so the word technically means to be filled with awe, and yet we use it to describe something bad or unpleasant.
@Hitokage571 No because lit simply means lighted and dim refers to the approximate measure of lumens. Did I spell that right? However you are most definitely on the right track.
@babybeatnik There's a difference between awful and aweful though... and while aweful is not recognized as a word, if something is "full of awe" what happens to the e? I think aweful should be recognized as a word and awful should be redefined.
Jumbo shrimp is only considered an oxymoron because someone forgot that shrimp doesn't mean small, it's a type of shellfish and everyone else just went along with it.
@babybeatnik Awful comes from Ayfull which comes from the old English egeful. ege= dread ful=full So Awful = dreadful You can use Awe-full, but in essence, both words are only homonyms.
"Act naturally" is really more like his example of "still moving." Act in that case doesn't mean to pretend to be something else, it simply means to behave. "Behave naturally" makes perfect sense. Anyone familiar with constitutional jurisprudence has heard my favorite: "substantive due process." Substantive law is law which is not about process, e.g. the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
"Everybody is said to own public property, yet nobody owns it. Nobody enjoys control of its use, nobody is responsible or liable for its misuse. "Public" property has no owner, so either it's not property, or else it's not public."
I think where people make the fake oxymoron of military intelligence and things as such their point is actually more satire that relies on the people knowing what an oxymoron is to then convey their point.
puns are funny, just not exsessivly. a good bit of shakesperian always is great. Look for me tomarrow and you'll find me a grave man- Romeo and Juliet. also Wild boar wouldn't count though it sounds like one, just checking. yesterday's tomarrow?
Not exactly an oxymoron, but 'expect the unexpected' is a good ol' fashioned contradiction in terms. When you expect the unexpected you're expecting the expected because you stopped expecting the expected as soon as you began to expecting the unexpected. You know when you say a word so much it stops making sense... is expected even the word I'm looking for? Oh god, I did this with 'remote' once.
what about the words extra and ordinary to create extraordinary, two words when left by themselves in a sentence depict something that it very ordinary or routine, whereas together they turn into something, well, out of the ordinary or extreme
@TIMoise54321 Well enlighten me on how "same difference" actually makes sense. I see it as the same group of "what in Sam Hill" or the the word "aint", where that group was derived from hillbillies. "Them brown wolves killed my cattle!" "Leroy, them wolves were grey!" "Same difference!'
Military Intelligence IS definitely an oxymoron! Trust me, it certainly is! I know as a fact it is, because I was in the Army for Seven years. A lot of soldiers I knew did things the hard way or tried things that didn't make sense and didn't work as planned. Some other people were know it all's and tried to act smart. But, those people were actually stupider than hell!
Like Real Magic, No-Aim Scope (from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue and Red Rescue Team), Werewolf, a phrase like: "Stupid geniuses and your big brains" which sounds like something Peter Griffin would say.
@guiltyvictim It depends on your usage of "guilty", i.e. "charged with wrongdoing" or "affected by a feeling of guilt". However, the more I think about it, the less oxymoronic it becomes...
@cpen22 I have 2 things to say: 1) It's a joke (mostly) and 2) It's more then 500 characters, so I had to delete some things so they could still be read.
controlled chaos, dimly lit, gentle beast, free reign, baby mama, Freudian slip... that last one was just icing on the cake. (trapped in a never ending pun)
Someone told me this one Happily Married.
Oooooo. I feel a cold breeze! ;)
Tryina be clever, ain't ya?

+Sahir D'Souza 50-50 man. 'cause generally Pretty means Cute, Handsome, Beautiful, Lovable, Adorable...

what about government worker is that a oxymoron
+John Wardell i was reading the comments and my face went from :l to (when i saw your comment) :O (not exact representation, my mouth is bigger)

I LOVED THAT CARTOON thanks for telling me I was looking for it!
Sunday night football, you can't have both day and night at the same moment. If the game is at night why use day?
I always thought Oxymoron was something dumb people used to clean their clothes!
Funny. Thanks. As Milton Berle used to say, "I know a good joke when I steal one".
My husband's favorite is "awful" as really it comes from "awe" which means to have a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder," so the word technically means to be filled with awe, and yet we use it to describe something bad or unpleasant.

My shirt seems a little big.
@Hitokage571 No because lit simply means lighted and dim refers to the approximate measure of lumens.
Did I spell that right?
However you are most definitely on the right track.
"Alone together"... my favorite :)
Puns are funny!
@babybeatnik I love that you caught that! I have no idea why awful is used negatively.
can we say lesson plan!
thanks for this, I needed something short to show to my class later today.
Student teacher. The bloopers for this would of been amusing.
my teacher likes the word oxymoron because it is the only time you can say moron without getting in trouble
Genuine veneer, Holy war, safety scissors, friendly fire, mandatory option, Dry ice, Jumbo Shrimp, A new classic, alone together, artificial intelligence, amateur expert, anarchy rules.

@babybeatnik

@quabot XD they are wet, so it should fall under liquid gas, but if it didnt, would it be a numb feeling??
Jumbo shrimp is only considered an oxymoron because someone forgot that shrimp doesn't mean small, it's a type of shellfish and everyone else just went along with it.
it reminded me of the starburst commercials where the scot-korean guy says it contridicts itself lmao
does "dry ice" count?
"Microsoft Works" made me laugh so hard that I had to start the video over because I missed a whole chunk!
He did say the ones that are meant to be insulting or rude and funny aren't usually actual oxymorons.
These videos are STUPIDLY CLEVER and INSANELY LOGICAL. Such a shame these people leaving comments don't seem to understand oxymorons.
Awfully can also mean wonderfully since awe is like wonder so awfully good actually makes sense.
"sharp-dullness"
best description of wordplay
@babybeatnik
Awful comes from Ayfull which comes from the old English egeful.
ege= dread ful=full
So Awful = dreadful
You can use Awe-full, but in essence, both words are only homonyms.
wow i didnt even reallize how many oxymorons we all use every day
"Largely insignificant"
"Consistently erratic"
"Understandably disorganized"
"Systematic chaos"
"Absolutely wrong"
"Very little"
Hey, this is fun! :)
"Act naturally" is really more like his example of "still moving." Act in that case doesn't mean to pretend to be something else, it simply means to behave. "Behave naturally" makes perfect sense. @PowerhouseTom Rap music, Hahaha, that one is an instant classic.
@clucasism Hell being a concept this one wouldn't really qualify. However there is a place called Hel in Norway which freezes over in winter.
"living legend"
Oxymorons is an old extinct word...we call these GavinNewsoms
@yhwsion
Wow, do you prononse them wrounge too?
it's 12:30 p.m, so my brain is fried just listening to this :)
Then there's pleonasms: a redundant phrase. They're the opposite of oxymorons, things life "true fact" and "free gift".
My current thesis chapter is entitled, "The Glorious Revolution is an Oxymoron."
I am trying too hard to be clever I think...
damn this PhD!
I love the genuine laugh at 1:32 lol very cute.
A lot of these aren't oxymorons, but still humorous.
"Everybody is said to own public property, yet nobody owns it. Nobody enjoys control of its use, nobody is responsible or liable for its misuse. "Public" property has no owner, so either it's not property, or else it's not public."
Thanks *takes a bow* I'm honoured
I think where people make the fake oxymoron of military intelligence and things as such their point is actually more satire that relies on the people knowing what an oxymoron is to then convey their point.
Terribly Fantastic!
God I love you guys.
Along with the not-so-clever variety with Military Intelligence and Business Ethics you should appreciate: Popular Science.
loosely packed should fit into the same category as still moving and even odds. packed means packaged
puns are funny, just not exsessivly. a good bit of shakesperian always is great.
Look for me tomarrow and you'll find me a grave man- Romeo and Juliet.
also Wild boar wouldn't count though it sounds like one, just checking.
yesterday's tomarrow?
I think "awfully good" is a misspelling of "awe fully good". As in "full of awe" as opposed to "bad".

@ali388 actually free gift wouldnt be an oxymoron because they both meen the same thing or imply the same thing all gifts are free
@Awonnuriel yeah same with Norway. People just sound ignorant when they say it's always cold in Scandinavia.
deafening silence
Doing Nothing, half empty, half full, never again, pure evil

Smart bomb landing on a high valued target.
Dude, "Microsoft Works" is indeed an oxymoron!!!
Yes, thank you! Someone is spreading the truth! God bless you!!!!!!
how is good friday one???
@zenthex1234 No, because civil refers to a war amongst the same people, not "being polite and thoughtful about war"
@spacebetweeen "motion picture" is an oxymoron. The others are not. Just wanted to qualify my upvote.
