  • The CataRT system [imtr.ircam.fr/imtr/CataRT] for corpus-based concatenative synthesis (CBCS) makes it possible to create music by selecting snippets of a large database of pre-recorded sound by navigating through a space where each snippet is placed according to its sonic character in terms of sound descriptors, which are characteristics extracted from the source sounds such as pitch, loudness, and brilliance, or higher level meta-data attributed to them. This allows one to explore a corpus of sounds interactively or by composing paths in the space, and to create novel harmonic, melodic, and timbral structures while keeping the nuances of the original sound.
