Back in the late 80s I bought a Browning Hi-Power. Had a heck of a time getting it to reliably feed hollow point rounds until I polished the heck out of the feed ramp. I never liked the sights on it either. A couple of years or so ago I sent it out to Robar in Phoenix and basically gave them carte blanche up to $1800 with the only instructions I want a pistol back that is totally reliable, accurate, durable, looks great that will be my EDC and a legacy firearm I can hand down. The "Hi Power Princess" Jodi Gritus went to work on it, Robar finished it internally and externally with their NP3+ finish and several months and about $1600 later I got it back. WOW!!! This pistol is now what I always wanted it to be and easily digests every type of round I feed it. It's very accurate, too and has fixed Tritium night sights. Love, love, LOVE this Hi Power!!!
I bought a hipower from aim surplus last November based on your review and I have been extremely pleased with it. I feel very fortunate I was able to get it. I have since refurbished the whole thing and i have less than $600 in it. Thanks for the vids.
I have an older surplus Belgian marked Hi Power with the older internal extractor and wood grips. From the early 60s or older. Its just the sweetest shooting and a most reliable handgun. They are great!
Browning Hi Power sets the standard for all other 9 MM pistols! I'm lucky to own a P35 Inglis Hi Power with tangent sights and slotted for shoulder stock holster. Original Canadian shoulder stock makes it a curio/relic and exempt from NFA. A replica stock is a No-No to put on a P35 Inglis Hi Power.
+C Kim Lucky you I missed out at a gun show due to lack of cash! Though I do own 2 1 is a Belgian Hp from the 50's and the other is a Browning /ingles hybrid both #1 Mk2's! Same as I cared in the Canadian Army!
I have a Browning Hi Power Circa 1987. It's blued with wood grips. Perfect finish. Perfect Classic design! Adjustable rear site added. I don't remember a "commercial" even being available back then. Nor a "surplus". The original like mine is the one you want! I bought it because I knew it would become a Collector Piece! I love it! Probably worth over $1,000 today if you can even find one! You must have been a kid back then and didn't even know that original Style Browning Hi Power's were still being made.
Huge fan of the BHP... love collecting and shooting these.. have always been wary of the surplus models so appreciate your critique and comments here. Good work and thanks for your postings.
I have 2 old High Powers and they both look new , what I like about them is the magazines they will fit my Camper 9 ( I do have to cut a notch into the magazine to make them interchange , but have never had a feed problem or any problems running them in the pistols or carbine , I do have to hold the magazine catch down to clear the second notch in the Camper 9 ) I also have a Camper .45 that takes the Colt .45 magazines with no modification's . Both setups make the perfect match ammo / magazines so I do not have to carry a bunch of mixed ammo / magazines when I'am out in the woods . The High Power was my first semiautomatic pistol and I will be looking for a import now that I know they are available to use as a beater . Thanks for the information , now I have to get 2 more one for my wife and one for myself .
When I went looking for a '9' after selling one I did not like, I discovered a BHP. I had to go to every LGS in town Reno before I could find one. Got a Mk.III. Changed hammer and sear and was good to go. Despite what others say about the trigger, mine worked just fine and I also liked the 'mousetrap' magazines. Accuracy was impeccable. Ergonomics perfect for my hand, I might say, even better then my H&K P30L which is also extremely comfortable. BHP's no longer mfg. I am glad I got one before they all disappeared!!!
I bought one of these in 1987, had it two-toned, stuck Pachmeyr grips on straight away and never looked back, always carry mercury-filled hollow points in extended mags.
Don, thanks for doing this piece. I know I go on a bit here but not enough is said about the Hi Power. The HI Power is very underrated and misunderstood. It was Browning's improvement over the 1911 and years had to pass for some of the 1911 patents to expire to complete the design . Less parts, smoother action and higher capacity with a world-wide accepted round, lighter and thiner and easier to carry than the .45, it was arguably his finest work in a light arm. I also agree that the smaller front sight is better. Easier to pick up and more accurate. The Hi Power is called so because it was the first to have a 13rd capacity. Mecgar makes a 15rd mag in a same-sized package, very reliable, and 20 and 30rd. mags are also available to compete with the other 9mms on the market. Also, not everyone is hot to trot for a polymer weapon and wants a good, metal framed pistol. If cared for, they will last three lifetimes. They carry well and are especially good in a shoulder rig. The surplus guns are available in the $350 - $450 range, depending on finish, have great fitment and shoot just fine. If you have patience you can find good quality surplus pieces. The one I found was a reconditioned 60's "T" model, miltary piece which had been given a Parkerized finish, commander hamer and even a new barrel which had seen little to no rounds by the time it got to me. A great buy at $400. Also the Parkerized finish is highly adhesive when refinishing with a Ceraoat or Druracoat type finish if you should so choose. And, as you say, by the time you do your own customizing you can have an amazing piece for the price of a new, stock unit. For those who want a rail, there is an aftermarket rail adapter that mounts securely to the front of the trigger guard. Mine wears a quality, 350 lumen quick connect light with strobe function. Very hard on bad guys eyes. :) I even found a side mounting top rail from Aim Point which allows your optic of choice on top while still keeping the open, iron sights, allowing for both close and distance shooting. It's a room clearing machine! They can be as much as you're willing to make them but, even right out of the box, new or surplus, you can't go wrong. Thanks again and having gone thru a break in myself, you have my sympathies.
I wanted to own a Hi Power enough, that I went out and bought a Arcus 98 DA ! it takes 15 round Hi Power mags, no magazine disconnect and I paid $350 for mine after transfer fee. The 98 DAC compact model takes the normal 13 round Hi Power Mags but has a shorter barrel. I'm real happy with mine so far, it was well worth the money.
I have both a practical and a MKIII P35 both are from the same year 1995 beautiful guns The practical was someone's safe queen hardly ever fired, stole it for $700 with original box and 2 factory mags on gunbroker The MKIII P35 was completely refinished parkerizing and original Israeli markings. I came across a extended slide stop for both
I've been collecting military firearms for more than 40 years and having some World War 2 combat carry handguns from Germany Japan England and United States I've discovered that when I military surplus firearms have an unusual finish on the left side like pitting or odd wear that's indicative to the handgun being carried in the shooters belt where sweat and abrasion against the rough military clothing can take its toll on the Finish.
+mozzberg I think Ali Oka, the Turk gunman who botched the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, used a Hi Power provided by the Bulgarian Communist secret police acting as proxy for the Soviets. Good choice for deniability as it is so prolific.
You can still pick them up even brand new never been fired. I know Turkey is making them for their military and police. I have one too and it's brand new in the box never been fired yet
I like your your videos very much. You provide a wealth of information. I have been wanting a Brownie for a long time and by watching you I now have a better understanding of what I need to look for. For thoses who don not like a Brownie, well they don't need to be shooting. Between you and Hickock 45 or the only Two on You Tub who produce a Quality Video worth watching. Jim/ Rockwall, Texas
I prefer the surplus ones mostly because of the finish. I prefer my pistols to have a few nicks and scratches. This way I do not have a heart attack if I drop it or something, ha. Unforgettably no one has them right now.
Love my HP. I also have a clone FEG PF9. It's still a nice shooter and looks sharp. The mags are not interchangeable, which is the only downside in my opinion. When I bought mine they were cheap money. A great alternative for anyone who can't find the HP they want, or is looking for a less expensive alternative.
i have a FEG direct copy, looks just like your surplus but the hammer is the one on you pracrical. 3 dot sights are non removale but they work. the previous owner had it for 12 years and the springs are like brand new.
did you get a new surplus.... the last one I thought was a mk2?.... My daddy bought me a IWI fn hi power two years ago. It was ruff so refinished it myself with a slow rust blue... Truly a bucket list gun for me. Great video.
Thanks to everything I've learned on your channel and others. Despite a tight budget I know what I want and what to look for. But all the research has given me a headache haha.
Bought my brand spanking new Hi-power last year[mark3], trigger is a little stiff the recoil feels like a 22,,, lol double taps are easy,, a pleasure to shoot.
I bought myself a surplus Hi-Power last August for $430 off of Aim Surplus. It was made in 1965 and is a police trade in. It's a remarkable shooter, even with the small front sight post I can get impressive accuracy. It has been dead nuts reliable too, eats steel cased Wolf without choking. I really wanted to get a new Browning Hi-Power but at $900 they're a total ripoff, especially when you can get a new CZ-75 for $500, which is a direct decedent of the Hi-Power.
I also stocked up on the Mec-Gar 15 round magazines, they work great! I wonder how they're able to stuff 15 rounds into them without being bigger than the 13 rounders?
Sootch00 Can you do a review of the FEG PJK 9HP Browning clone? It is an affordable Browning alternative for cash strapped folks. I've had mine for 30+ years & I LOVE it!!
Hi, I own a browning high power Argentina clon FM 95 classic model , and it feeds well with fmj, hp, jsp and different ammo brands, except Wolf steel case ammo . Nice 9mm pistol, affordable price.
carried one fir many years in the military. whrn I did my small arms (armorers) course the intructor told us that this pistol was never designed to be carried cocked and locked, even though they are. His anacdote for this feature he called "paddy's leg" due to the number of Irish cops who shot themselves in the leg. we aways carried them loaded with the hammer down.
James Gilhooly, I know this is a two year old post but I thought I might explain. I think he's talking about the Irish that came to the US last century, they were a large part of east coast police departments and still are.
Late commercial production Hi Powers with cast frames made in Portugal, assembled in Belgium are alledgedly manufactured to .40S&W pressure specs, in which caliber these are also available. Would any commentator on here reading my comment be able to verify or refute this ? Thanks.
You should have Herrett or Kim Ahrends make some hand carved grips for them. I would recommend Kingswood for the surplus model, and Tulipwood for the two tone.
Why not buy on from tisas regent it's a replica of the high powered browning and just replaced the internals with browning parts just keep the shell or just keep it they way it is.
Used to carry one of those out whilst out in Bosnia during the civil war in the 1990's, awesome pistol, just point and it will hit it, that's what I was told and how I learnt to fire it to a hmmm fairly proficient standard...there's more but not on open forum, sorry folks...if you want to know, I'll tell you just for the trip down memory lane, there are NO side arms in the uk anymore ~ ex British military
I fired a early 1970's Belgium made next to a newer one [late 1990's] and the trigger on the older one was much better. [shorter take up and reset. And lighter crisper pull]
My father has had this gun for over 50 years, in his country the Dominican Republic he brought for the equivalent of 10 US dollars at the time maybe even less holy cow right 10 freaking dollars and still has it in mint condition looks brand of course he takes it to gun smith for a paint job and all that kinda stuff over the years.
Nice video, thank you! Always wanted one but balked at the $1000 price tag on the new ones, if I see a surplus at the prices you mentioned I may have to pick one up!
I would really like to see you do a trigger upgrade and deal with the magazine disconnect. I have a commercial HP and the trigger action is really disappointing as delivered.
this is one of the few really best pistols in the world ,with it's reliability and reputation to take with you anywhere you might be ,specially when you want reliable gun it's reputation far exceeded any gun in the world ,it's simplicity is just so good ,you don't need to buy expensive pistol or any hybrid pistols that can never be reliable than this simple hi power pistol.like the Russian old. gun (pistols ) this gun can and will always be your protection any time ,any where ,you might be in ,reliability is your only option in having the best yet simple and powerful gun
I went through all 27 pages in odd lots. No Browning Hi Power. A few pistols that look like "knock offs"... No results when doing a search for the word Browning... I tried both the .biz & the .com websites. Just wasted 60 minutes of my life... Good video as always Sootch. Thank you for your advice & guidance... Even if it was a lost leader... Maybe some dealers bought em all up after you posted your video, prices will be higher now. Oh well.
aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=F1FNHP&name=FN+Belgium+Hi+Power+9mm+Pistol+Standard+Mk+2&groupid=5389 And here's some more worn ones. Also, technically, the Brownings are more of a knock off than these are.
+sauer-ruger knock out the pin visible in the rear of the trigger and the parts assembly will fall out, or buy and iinstall an aftermarket wide faced replacement part from Cylinder & Slide. If you could find one, the Nazi trigger was also fabricated without the cutouts for those parts in the first place, they were not concerned with osha, pc, trigger locks, or magazine disconnect safety, just production shortcuts to increase output. Good shootin'.
...and yet a year later those that did their homework know he called it....for all Hi Powers / P35. If you can find a new one (with non-inflated price; many still don't know): buy it! If you can find a used one that you feel comfortable with (remember the skies' the limit with replacement parts, aftermarket upgrades, etc.) buy it!
You're killing me, Sootch. Just when I'd settled on a CZ-75BD or SP-01, you post this video. If it were you, and you had to make a choice, CZ or BHP? The gun would be for home protection and occasional self-defense carry.
Back in the late 80s I bought a Browning Hi-Power. Had a heck of a time getting it to reliably feed hollow point rounds until I polished the heck out of the feed ramp. I need another Hi-Power in my life
This is what Roy Demeo, played by Ray Liotta in iceman pulled in the car seen outside the Iceman's house. Great movie.
I bought a hipower from aim surplus last November based on your review and I have been extremely pleased with it. I feel very fortunate I was able to get it. I have since refurbished the whole thing and i have less than $600 in it. Thanks for the vids.
My grandfathers nightstand gun was a high-power. What a nice gun to shoot.
Frank Serpico carried a Hi Power in 1972. Coolness factor 10/10.
It was the only high capacity pistol available at the time.
I have an older Hi Power from my dad that was bought in the late 60's early 70's and it one of if not the best shooter I have.
I have an older surplus Belgian marked Hi Power with the older internal extractor and wood grips. From the early 60s or older. Its just the sweetest shooting and a most reliable handgun. They are great!

rimsdad Sweet, owning any Hi Power is wonderful. If I could I would own many more. They can get a bit pricey.
Lucky you. In Canada those guns are hard to come by and command a premium for being Canadian manufactured, like the Longbranch Lee Enfields.
Can't wait to see the upgrades to the surplus gun. I cannot express how much I LOVE the Hi Power!
I have a Browning Hi Power Circa 1987. It's blued with wood grips. Perfect finish. Perfect Classic design! Adjustable rear site added. I don't remember a "commercial" even being available back then. Thank you for doing this review. I am a huge fan of the Hi-Power .9mm. I love it for the range & target shooting. What a great handgun.
I would love to get another one.. one of my favorite handguns
I have a 1944 Inglis Hi Power. Made in Canada, great old guns as long as you get new magazines. Still in use with the Canadian Army 70 years on.
Huge fan of the BHP... love collecting and shooting these.. have always been wary of the surplus models so appreciate your critique and comments here. Good work and thanks for your postings.
sootch you give everything a thumbs up brcause you only review the good stuff. a high power is one of the best no doubt about that. great vid cheers.
Yep, got me an FN surplus for 300 about 5 years ago. She's one of my pride and joy. I left the finish rugged as it came.
I love how the high-power put the trigger bar in the slide to get around widening the magazine well
hey Don, i said it for the last hi-power video, God bless Chris, sorry for his loss. keep his dads memory alive with that pistol. great videos .
I really like your presentation in the 9mm browning thanks for teach us
"I never claimed to be Hickok" hahahaha
That two guns at a time thing was great -- and no limp wristing at all!
Also a star of The Usual Suspects.
But can it shoot through a truck hood? ;) Thanks for the entertainment, Sootch.
son of a bitch you beat me to it
Too soon?
+replicantargent I heard the surplus ones do a little bit better of a job at that.
+Nox Merc ha!
I bought anazi hi power from 1942, about 5 years ago
For 400.00 one of my favorite pistols
I even found a side mounting top rail from Aim Point which allows your optic of choice on top while still keeping the open, iron sights, allowing for both close and distance shooting.
I have both a practical and a MKIII P35 both are from the same year 1995 beautiful guns
The practical was someone's safe queen hardly ever fired, stole it for $700 with original box and 2 factory mags on gunbroker
The MKIII P35 was completely refinished parkerizing and original Israeli markings.
Both hipowers look awesome. The two tone commercial is quite impressive
carried one for 30 years in my job, still my favorite1 in the chamber ,hammer down, and only 12 in the mag,not 13 as you overload the spring
You forgot to mention it's Eddie Murphy's gun in Beverly Hills Cop!
And how about how he can fire a single action gun with the hammer down lol
+mozzberg I think Ali Oka, the Turk gunman who botched the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II, used a Hi Power provided by the Bulgarian Communist secret police acting as proxy for the Soviets. Good choice for deniability as it is so prolific.
Do a collaboration video with Hickok!!! That would be so awesome!!
I Sacrifice HD just to watch Sootch early
+John Tucker Thanks John : )
i have a feg hi-power that shoots really good. last year a local gunshop had a 1953 browning in the box for about 900.
HAHA, 11:40 ish And the surplus.... Its smooth too. Thanks for the review. Always love coming to your channel. Definitely my next pick up.
Me: "I know exactly what I want for my first gun. A Browning Hi Power!"
Browning: "Oh we stopped production."
Me: "._."
You can still pick them up even brand new never been fired. I know Turkey is making them for their military and police. I have one too and it's brand new in the box never been fired yet
Gunbroker.com
Two years later, You can get a new Springfield.
The black and silver looks really nice
Great review and the truth! Can't go wrong with a Hi-Power
I like your your videos very much. You provide a wealth of information. I have been wanting a Brownie for a long time and by watching you I now have a better understanding of what I need to look for. Love the dual wield, Sootch!
This pistol was Irish Army standard issue until about 5 years ago.
I like my military arms with a little surface wear., But I'm that guy who's more intrigued by military weapons than "race guns" or prissy "sporters"!
WAQWBrentwood battle scars for the win
For pistol just drop in a match barrel and match trigger then you have a race gun
I have a Hi Power thats a WW2 bring back all matching numbers even the two mags and holster. The sights adjust to 500 meters super sweet pistol.
I was looking at a video of the Normandy battle in 1944 one of the Germans had a Browning Hi- Power
It'd be really nice if the Hi Power was rereleased as a 10mm pistol. Now that would be a REAL HI POWER
hi i agree with you i have the old one and old is gold
i have a FEG direct copy, looks just like your surplus but the hammer is the one on you pracrical. 3 dot sights are non removale but they work. the previous owner had it for 12 years and the springs are like brand new.

great video. can't wait to see it refinished
Great video! Thanks for all you do. Looking forward to next hi power video!
thanks for this great comparison. Very interesting.
Bought my brand spanking new Hi-power last year[mark3], trigger is a little stiff the recoil feels like a 22,,, lol double taps are easy,, a pleasure to shoot.

I'm glad you got another practical. That's a really nice piece. Good job on the double wielding, too! Later! John
Can't wait to see the surplus all purty'd up.
Irish police, who are generally unarmed, never carried these. They were, however on issue to the Irish Army. Withdrawn about 5 years ago.

I picked up a surplus Hi Power from Mach 1 on gb last year. Replaced the grips with new old stock surplus. Still have yet to hit the range with it.
Late commercial production Hi Powers with cast frames made in Portugal, assembled in Belgium are alledgedly manufactured to .40S&W pressure specs, in which caliber these are also available. Would any commentator on here reading my comment be able to verify or refute this ? Thanks.
I look forward to seeing your upgrade video.
Very nice pistols. My late father had one. A bit to pricey for me for one in good condition, but still a good shooter overall.
You should have Herrett or Kim Ahrends make some hand carved grips for them. I would recommend Kingswood for the surplus model, and Tulipwood for the two tone.

FYI, Canadian army still uses hi power.
Hi I own a surplus and I love it. Thanks for the Video
I fired a early 1970's Belgium made next to a newer one [late 1990's] and the trigger on the older one was much better. [shorter take up and reset. And lighter crisper pull]
I say a robar finish would look outstanding on the Hi-Power
Back in the '70s they cost $151.50 std. NIB And $152.50 NIB with adjust sights. The Renasaence model fully eng. $334.00.
Great video Sootch. -Corey over @ the PREPARED 2 THRIVE channel.
Raymond, “Red” Remington’s preferred gun.
Thanks for the video Sootch. Much respect. I've wanted a hi power for some time.
Nice video, thank you! Always wanted one but balked at the $1000 price tag on the new ones, if I see a surplus at the prices you mentioned I may have to pick one up!
Thumbs up for the future upgrade vids!
I would really like to see you do a trigger upgrade and deal with the magazine disconnect. I have a commercial HP and the trigger action is really disappointing as delivered.
this is one of the few really best pistols in the world ,with it's reliability and reputation to take with you anywhere you might be ,specially when you want reliable gun
it's reputation far exceeded any gun in the world ,it's simplicity is just so good ,you don't need to buy expensive pistol or any hybrid pistols that can never be reliable than this
simple hi power pistol.like the Russian old. gun (pistols ) this gun can and will always be your protection any time ,any where ,you might be in ,reliability is your only option in
having the best yet simple and powerful gun
I went through all 27 pages in odd lots. No Browning Hi Power. A few pistols that look like "knock offs"... No results when doing a search for the word Browning... I tried both the .biz & the .com websites. Just wasted 60 minutes of my life... Good video as always Sootch. Thank you for your advice & guidance... Even if it was a lost leader... Maybe some dealers bought em all up after you posted your video, prices will be higher now. Oh well.
+Shawn Murphy Their website can be hard to go through... try gunboker.com. They have CAI imported Hi Powers for sale their last time I looked.
+Shawn Murphy AIM Surplus has some last I looked.
aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=F1FNHP&name=FN+Belgium+Hi+Power+9mm+Pistol+Standard+Mk+2&groupid=5389
And here's some more worn ones. Also, technically, the Brownings are more of a knock off than these are.
+Shawn Murphy
go to aim surplus -- they had them last time I looked
can you do a video removing the magazine disconnect?
If you can find a used one that you feel comfortable with (remember the skies' the limit with replacement parts, aftermarket upgrades, etc.) buy it!
the old original ones work just fine.
Nice video. I also relate to your hickock comment. Lol! God Bless.
You're killing me, Sootch. Just when I'd settled on a CZ-75BD or SP-01, you post this video. If it were you, and you had to make a choice, CZ or BHP? The gun would be for home protection and occasional self-defense carry.
grantorino2009 , Even CZ 75 B all the Way CZ 75 SP-01 shadow and shadow 2 best
Get both
Awesome pistol.
I'd take this pistol over any other pistol.
Call me Silly Billy but i almost prefer the surplus one. Good shootin, good shootin.
Me 2!
Bilge Pump always prefer the surplus.
We have moved to glock 17 in the uk forces so im sure our old fn's will be going to the public soon. :-)
Great vid fella.
Replacing a dead accurate beautiful hammer fire with a block spongy plastic monster ? Why just why ?
Still not sure if the Hi-Power is truly an improvement over the 1911 but no doubt both are quality.
so debating between the two
Surplus Browning Hi-Power vs Surplus CZ75
Kevin Nguyen i
the problem I have is finding quality mags. I'll have to try more brands
bad ass video and what a beautiful piece of hardware. ive never had the chance to fire one but im hoping to change that soon 😀
Mec-Gar stopped making the 20 rounders. *sniff* :(
I see you got the century billboard on the slide as well :-)
