    As someone who isn't a good swimmer as a sea cadet they said this might save your life.... I learned it. Can't tie a bowline to tie up a tent to a tree for example but I used to be able to do the one handed bowline around myself with my eyes closed. I haven't tried it in years but I have thought about it see if it's still embedded in my brain and muscle memory.

    I really like this knot. My scout master taught it to me 45 years ago . He said it would be valuable for vertical rescue, I'm glad I never used it for that purpose. Thanks for the heads up.

      +BEARivrman81356 It's really a judgement call and dependent on the situation you're faced with. Always err on the side of caution if using the One-Handed Bowline in a rescue scenario. ~ Bryan

      You do realize that he used two hands. Another thing, if you are floating downstream and your feet are not on the bottom. How are you going to step over anything.

    Yup. This may just save a life one day in a tight situation. Good to practice

    Proceeds to use both hands.

      I know.. Try that on the side of mountain. Where one hand is incapacitated..And that carabiner above you. Is your only way to save yourself..

    That was an excellent tutorial! In an ideal situation. Your mate throwing the line should have tied a bowline! But in my case. It would be my wife or son throwing the rope to me and in a panic situation they would not know how to tie the bowline. The way you showed this teqnique? One you mentioned asphyxiation! A lot of people have no idea. Also wrap around the waist and showing the top view etc. Makes me feel confident in a situation like you explained, this is the best way to tie off. Also wrap around the hand part! No matter how strong or how much muscle you have? You can lose a limb especially when there is that force of current pushing you. Very well explained! Thank you. You never know when you might need this to save some one or yourself! Cheers

      Any double looped knot, Fig of 8 on a bight or Bowline on a Bight (BOB) or the Karash Bowline --a double loop hybrid of fig of 8 and bowline now used by fire and rescue teams

    If you need to adjust tension in the line. You can use your right hand (it has the working end of the rope and it.) You can't use your left hand, like he did, either. If you do.
    You let go of the tree branch and are floating down the river again. It is spelled bowline, but it's not pronounced bow-line. It is pronounced boe-lynne.

      +Beau Chastain It looks like OD green Bluewater 11mm Assault Line. I have a few ropes and they look exactly like the line he's using, but that doesn't mean anything. They're rated around 7,500 pounds and two falls, I believe. I bought my first one back in 1984.

    I believe you are mispronouncing bowline, merrium-webster seems to agree with me

    • @ITStactical
      @ITStactical  9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +R Dixon Everyone is entitled to pronounce it the way they like, I refer to it as a "bow line" due to its history. This is from Wikipedia, but it's a good description of why:
      "The bowline's name has an earlier meaning, dating to the age of sail. On a square-rigged ship, a bowline (sometimes spelled as two words, bow line) is a rope that holds the edge of a square sail towards the bow of the ship and into the wind, preventing it from being taken aback."
      Thanks! ~ Bryan

      +ITS Tactical / Imminent Threat Solutions Anybody in the Navy would agree with Dixon, so would any climber. It's pronounced "Bo-Lin." Good video tho, too many people don't know how to tie knots of any kind.

      @ITStactical  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Alexander Castiglione I was in the Navy and I disagree with Dixon, I'm also a climber too, so I'm not sure where that leaves us LOL! Glad you liked the video. ~ Bryan

      Dandy video. The correct form to pronoune the word NOW is bo lin just like what Alexander said. English changes (too dang fast and stupidly sometimes, like in this case). I never thought about the etymology of the word though. "Bow line". Very cool little fact you put on here. I'm a climber and work at a climbing gym...I'll definitely use that little fact in my classes.
      In the end, thanks for the education buddy, but you'll probably get corrected on that pronunciation for the rest of your life. Especially on youtube where folks are quick to respond haha
      Peace n Luv

    • @ehatley
      @ehatley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Originally, it was a naval rescue knot. It was thrown from the bow of a ship to those in the water. The annunciation has been "bo-lin" knot over time.
