Neil seems like a good chap to be looking after this kind of stuff, too many men of a certain generation wrap these up in cotton wool and forget the best way to preserve them is to use them and maintain them well. I was there early this year and found that even the staff in both museums like to engage and are knowledgable and friendly about all the cars on display, well worth the drive up from this ‘ere London.
I was lucky enough to work for Jaguar and then JLR on and off from 2001 until 2020. I am so proud to be part of the company’s story during that time. I worked at Whitley, Castle Browmich, Browns Lane, Gaydon as well as the Landrover site at Solihull. They made some magnificent cars in the past. I myself own a 2005 X type estate (which some regard as not their finest hour but it’s a Jag and its mine!) I have a few bits of memorabilia from my time there such as a booklet with CD rom of the RD-6 Project. I worked on the S Type (X204&X206), XJ (X350 & X351) XK (X103 and X150) and then during my second stint the XE, XF, F Pace, F-Type, Range Rover Velar and many other models. It was an exciting time to be part of the team that took the Jaguar name forwards. I also enjoyed reading and learning about the past too whilst there. One amazing memory was a line of D type’s C Types and other models lining up to fuel up ready to go down to the Le Mans classic around say 2005. The sound when they all fired up put goosebumps down my spine. I need to visit the British Motor Museum again at some point. I was luck enough to work at Gaydon for a short while before leaving and having that amazing place to visit in my lunch hour was amazing……thanks again Ian for sharing a great video
It's always worth having a look around the JDHT floor in the Collections Centre, but I especially like the workshop, which can be viewed from the balcony upstairs.
In my view Ford coming in improved reliability and finish to Jaguar - I own an early xk8 (96) and most of it is original and still works! I like the fact that some components are still available. Many thanks for the video and I will be visiting soon
What an interesting Hubnut episode. Certainly interesting collection of Jaguar Prototypes. I didn't know that any prototype cars were kept, I assumed that they would have been destroyed.

I love seeing the prototype and mule vehicles. My favourites at the British Motor museum are the Land Rover Freelander test mule Maestro van and the BL safety cars.
Nothing quite like driving a vehicle that's covered in matte black paint and shape-disguising cladding. It managed to keep the AU's shape disguised, but stood out wherever it went!
I must have just missed you as I got to the museum just as the XJR9 was being loaded onto the truck for Le Mans and recorded the XJR5 revving up as I was leaving! It's an amazing collection.
ahh the XJ220, I worked in a foundry in 1990/1991 where we cast the aluminium cylinder blocks, heads, inlet manifolds and plenum chambers for those. To get the sand out of the water jackets the castings had drain holes which were welded up later, the manifolds had 2 caps welded on after the sand was removed. As a 19 year old BS qualified TIG welder it was my job to weld up the holes and the manifold caps on, then hide the welds and you wouldn't think that that would happen on a 200mph car
Live only a couple of miles away, and have spent many happy hours looking at the collection, that Broadspeed XJC is the coolest jag in existence 😎 period.
It may be of interest. I was a contractor working at Fords research centre in Dunton when it was just completed Talking to the technicians, I was told that the Mark one Escort was road tested for 1000's of miles using an adapted Mark one Cortina body 😀
A great video and a great museum . I really must go there again soon , especially where the Jaguar experimental cars are which I visited briefly before and deserves a much longer look around . It’s a sad though that Jaguar seems to have lost its way a bit recently .
If I’m correct, there was one of those four-cylinder XK engines on display at the York Motor Museum in Western Australia at one point. Just remember seeing it on a visit there some years ago. Would be really good to see all those cars in a walkaround of that facility. Some I’ve seen in that collection when I visited the UK, but there’s a lot there I’d like to see too.
7:47 I worked at Jaguar Cars as a development engineer back in the '90s and 2000's. I also spoke to some engineers that had been working on the XJ42 (maroon convertible) and they had also said that it wasn't Ford that cancelled the car. They said that it had become too heavy, too thirsty and too laggy (it was a turboed AJ16 engine.)
A 1920's/30's car is a testers nightmare as he/she has to dig the manual out or go online to see what regs apply and which don't. I always took a copy of what applied and what didn't with me as many never believed that back in the 70's single dipping headlights and a single rear light were still legal. Nearside mechanically dipped or was fixed and offside cut out. An absolute pain driving on an unlit road on a dark night with oncoming traffic, one couldn't see a thing apart from what the lights of the oncoming vehicles illuminated. Many owners modified them after the war but not all.
I remember What Car? magazine having a brief news piece about the new F-Type (1989?). I was looking forward to that one. Never realised that it became an Aston Martin.
Great video, remember the XK8 mule when Autocar did a special magazine at the launch. How good does the XJ41 F-Type look still, shame they didn't find a way to produce it in the 80s even as a 2wd to bridge the gap between XJ-S and XK8, another British motor industry what if...
The two concepts at the 10:00 Mark, I remember them from an issue of Autocar, I seem to recall they had really interesting interiors. Not the typical wood & leather but more trendy wine bar vibes complete with changeable mood lighting that you now see in many German brands.
That beautiful chrome finish X350 - wow. And the convertible Daimler concept that David Marks actually made into a working car. Some absolute car-porn there for the Jaguar enthusiast.

A few short years ago I saw one that had crashed into a row of parked cars on a relatively straight part of road between Cotteridge and Harborne. Sadly no chance to stop and take pictures.

I assume you also went upstairs where there's a lot of Austin/Rover/BL stuff? I've not been in the CC for a while, is there some Vauxhall stuff up there too now? I look after the revolving door at the Museum, so I have to go there every 6 months or so, and often have a quick look around while I'm there. I also go to quite a few JLR sites and see a lot of stuff that I'm not allowed to take pictures of.

Surprising Jaguar never considered using the 4-cylinder XK in their canned XJ Junior project (also known as 3-litre XJ GT, Small Car and Baby XJ), which would have meshed well with plans for a short-stroke 2.6-3.0-litre XK6 capable of putting out up to 185 hp (or 123 hp as hypothetical 2-litre XK4 - competitive with 2.0 Alfa Twin-Cam) before that devolved into the 2.8 XK6. Instead Jaguar opted for either using an exotic Coventry Climax CFF/CFA V8, old 2.5 Daimler V8, 3-litre XK6 or a V12-based V8 engines until the creation of BL undermined the rationale to compete against Rover and Triumph's saloons.
Interesting vid ta - been to the Gaydon museum many times and it's great. The JDHT collection is excellent too, although I still feel sad that the old Browns Lane site is no more. I think Ford should get credit for investing in Jaguar - they may not have survived otherwise, especially if GM had bought the company. Just hope Jaguar (and Land Rover) can get through the EV transition. I fear for the marque's future.
The XK8 has only, a few years ago been through the similar phase that the E Type went through at one point. Being cheap and unfashionable. Browsing classified prices over a period of time, so many seemed barely over £1000. Only recently do they seem to have shaken that off.
So to help protect the collection from accidental damage, why not display less vehicles at any one time and have more room around the exhibits. I found the vehicles crammed together on the upper floor made it very difficult to look at the vehicles properly and hard to photograph!
This is the issue in a nutshell. Remove more cars, people complain the car they wanted to see isn't there. As for upstairs, I was told that was always intended as a storage area that could be viewed rather than a display area.
That was really interesting - always good content when you are doing a walk around with a industry person. Did Jaguar do hot weather testing in Australia ? And, was the green and white Jaguar XJS, behind both of you at the end: TWR Racing - Tom Walkinshaw Racing - " the Scott ", from the year they won Bathurst ?
Why do they bother to disguise cars? It's often easy enough to understand the overall looks even with the camouflage. And are they afraid other companies will copy it?

We must have been there at the same time. I arrived (in Elly the 2CV) just as the XJR-9 was being rolled out, then watched it get loaded.

I used to work on pre-production mules for Jaguar back in my work on diagnostic and production systems. Brings back memories of the early 2000's.

I think the DB7 owed more to the XJS to be honest, but some themes from XJ42 would have been an inspiration.

Absolutely. They don't let hairy TH-camrs drive stuff like the Le Mans XJR-9 or XJ13.

They are, but it doesn't hurt to get a professional inspection, especially if you're letting volunteers and journos drive them.

I do believe (judging by another comment) that some testing was done in Australia but Death Valley in the US was the usual target

I think it's all about trying to maintain the surprise before the launch. This cladding certainly hid a lot of the shape.
