My son and I are musicians and we both perform and teach. I’m a guitarist and he is a drummer. He has been playing drums for 15 years. Drum sets he owns are DW, Tama, Yamaha, Pearl, and Gretsch. This past weekend we stopped by local music store so he could pick up some sticks. And they had a Ludwig Classic Maple 4 piece Vintage Black Pearl Oyster. We were both totally impressed and surprised how good the drum set sounded. A lot of volume, and rich tone. And the look is awesome! Now my son is looking at adding another drum set to his collection. All I can say is that I don’t blame him and good job Ludwig on this drum set. Nailed it!!!
I agree. Carter could make pots and pans sound good. I watch his demos just to listen to his amazing groove. He's right up there with Keith Carlock, Steve Gadd, etc. That said, I love Ludwig stuff.
Thanks for doing this Carter & Sweetwater. Ludwig always makes incredible drums, and this is no exception! I love my Ludwig Keystone X (now known as Classic Oak)
I saw Carter with Charlie Hunter and Victoria Victoria in Pittsburgh at the tiny Club Cafe. It was amazing. Incredible talent, creativity, and musicianship all around.
Love your skills and feel ! 🥁 Great sounding, and looking drums too imo. "Sounds like what it sounds like in my head." - yep! That's what I was thinking too. Cheers! 🎉
Have always loved the Ludwig sound and look especially with the true Ludwig badge on this kit. I hate the blue & green Ludwig badge. Also my favorite drummer Bun E. Carlos of CT plays Ludwigs. He gets a big huge sound out of them!!!!!! 👍
2:27 it DOESN'T sound silly at all to me, that's the exact reason I'm a huge fan of those 3ply with re-rings shells: to my ears they sound like a drum should. Sharper bearing edges may have more sensitivity, attack and even more volume, but IMHO they cannot deliver the THUD a drum has to. Matter of taste, nothing final ;-)
Hey MrPolyward, thanks for the question! The Sweetwater Exclusive Shell shell pack comes with a 10x7, 12x8 and a 16x16 floor tom. In the video, Carter added the optional 13x9 rack tom and the 14x14 floor tom to give him more things to hit! If you would like to dig in about Ludwig drums, I would love to chat, just give me a call! Drake Sobehrad, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3271, drake_sobehrad@sweetwater.com
Some of the older Ludwigs have always seemed to have overly large lugs to me, especially for the toms. This kit looks a lot more balanced and looks / sounds phenomenal.
Beautiful drums, I dont like the looks of those brackets though. Maybe if I had some experience using them they might grow on me. Theres nothing like a Ludwig snare drum. I have a mostly early 70s pieced together 3ply set in black diamond pearl that is my favorite gigging set and everyone says they sound great always.
God bless you my friend. I wish I could have made it 23 plus years at ANY job. But I was a failure who ended up a full time chef and part time drummer. Should have been the other way around. You know how it is in chef world, one job after the other always looking for just a little less misery. When the phone rang for a gig, I would have to turn it down, and everyone knows what happens when you turn down a gig, the phone stops ringing real quick. Did it 40 years, now retired. 🥁🥁🥁
The maple shells are irrelevant if you are miking the kit from the top skins. The maple sound is "IN" the drums, not above it. Please dont take my word for it, check out any big rock drum sounds from the 80's
Excellent observation. I found that birch drums (for example) scatter the sound above the shells and the maple drums sounds like they're holding most of the sound in the shell.
You can buy a kit as good three times cheaper...throwing around Mystique about sound is the Job of those who fill their pockets with money or equipment that way ...drum companies Like Ludvig & DW think they can charge what ever they want if they "present" it in a "right" way ...find a video of this same kit that somebody recorded on a mobile phone & you'll see that its an average thrash bin with some plastic elastic on it...and be aware that for the same kind of money you can buy a second hand Mercedes Benz which will take you 100 times from East to West coast ...just disgusting round pieces of Wood with bits of metal on it with a price tag of 5000$ ...Bull-shiyyyxte
They're both incredible drummers, and Carter is very well versed with Ludwig drums. This was an amazing demonstration and the drums sound incredible. I think Nick is on tour right now

That's the most beautiful Ludwig kit I've seen in years!!
it's the colour....super cool, rhythmic look about it... the texture says it all....always loved the ludwig sound...👏👏👍💯
The color reminds me of the early 80s Tama Imperialstar kits
That's kind of a low bar.

It sounds and looks as if Ludwig has knocked this one out of the park. I have Gearlust.
Carter is in my Top 5 favorite drummers. Love that dude's groove, feel, and musicality.
Thank you 😊

I agree, Carter. They sound like drums do in my head as well. Powerful and silky smooth simultaneously.
I always say Ludwig resonates with me. It’s the sound I think of when I think of drums.
Ludwig and Carter, can't get better!
Carter has finesse & creativity for days.
Thanks! 🙏🏻
He certainly does and is so relaxed doing it
Best sounding Ludwig kit I've ever heard
Thanks for doing this Carter & Sweetwater. Ludwig always makes incredible drums, and this is no exception! I love my Ludwig Keystone X (now known as Classic Oak)
I saw Carter with Charlie Hunter and Victoria Victoria in Pittsburgh at the tiny Club Cafe. It was amazing. Incredible talent, creativity, and musicianship all around.
Thanks! That was a fun gig
Sweetwater becoming a dealer for Istanbul would be icing on the cake.
Oh what an absolute BEAUTY of a kit!
One of my favorite drummers. Relaxed, musical, improvisational
Congrats for the tuning, sound awsome.
Phenomenal blue finish and black nickel hardware ❤ sounds killer as well!
Love Sweetwater! Great video and look forward to working for you guys after I graduate!
This kit is gorgeous!!!
Perfect Match .
Carter and Ludwig
Ludwig is the best!
Kit sounds and looks delicious and some pretty tasty drumming too!
Ludwig has upped their game with this one! That snare is killer as well!🔥
That China sounds great
that black nickel hardware looks incredible. Great sounding kit and Carter's playing is always terrific.
Love those Luddy’s and his playing
I do like the Neusonic 2.0. Cherry is a great tonewood. It’s an excellent jazz kit.
I’m still sold, with Acoustic Drum set.
Because ain’t nothing like live drums, on stage.
World class touch and time. Carter is a top guy for me.
That's a killer drumset, great sound and looks
Ludwig AND Carter McLean?!
It's almost not fair!
This is an awesome looking drum kit, Wow !!!
Sweet sounds.
Sweet color.
My first drum set was a Ludwig 12 piece Rock set, 24” kick drum.
6 cymbals 1 cow bell with a Stainless steel Timbale set.
Amazing cymbals too
Cymbals fantastic too.
These sound and look great.
My dream kit :)
Awesome finish!!!
the tone!
Love your skills and feel ! 🥁 Great sounding, and looking drums too imo. "Sounds like what it sounds like in my head." - yep! That's what I was thinking too. Cheers! 🎉
Ludwig absolutely smashed it with this kit. In the era of Uber-exotic finishes this thing stole the show in the most classy subtle way possible.
gorgeous. awesome playing.
Rad kit and playing of course. Finish reminds me of the old sonor nicko kits, very nice
Méchant beau kit
Have always loved the Ludwig sound and look especially with the true Ludwig badge on this kit. I hate the blue & green Ludwig badge. Also my favorite drummer Bun E. Carlos of CT plays Ludwigs. He gets a big huge sound out of them!!!!!! 👍
I don't think I've ever seen that color before. I like my blue sparkle on my Classic Oaks, but this color is something different. Pretty cool!
such a beautiful kit! 😍🔥🔥🔥
does this also mean you guys will be selling istanbul agop cymbals ?
ludwig is back!
Would love to see that finish on a downbeat kit with chrome hardware..
So nice to see atlas hardware being used. That did great with that. Mmmm. Dark nickel.

maybe now we can finally get istanbul agop on sweetwater! MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!
Sounds great, but what's that crash from Istanbul that sounds like a crash if doom? And that China...!! 😍
What are the depths of the toms in this setup? Particularly interested in the floor tom depths.

They sound great. I prefer drums that are 6 to 9 ply without glue rings to keep 3 ply drums in round. That said, they do sound great.
Playing the Lion King for over two decades? When did he start, when he was 10?!
He’s likely 46, so that would have put him at 23 at the time.

Bring back Nick!!!!!!!
What would MAP price be on just 4 pc kit in this finish/hardware? 22-10-12-16 with a bass drum tom mount?
Wow 🤤
Some of the older Ludwigs have always seemed to have overly large lugs to me, especially for the toms. This kit looks a lot more balanced and looks / sounds phenomenal.
Make sure to check out Victoria Victoria
Beautiful drums, I dont like the looks of those brackets though. Maybe if I had some experience using them they might grow on me.

Where is NICK?
Kit sounds fantastic, but it'd be a lot cooler if the exotic lacewood ply was on the exterior. That blue finish is pretty boring to look at.
Yeap. Not a fan of this particular blue finish
The blue is a lacquer finish, for what it's worth. It has a very slight metallic hint to it, too, which is kind of hard to capture in photos/videos.
I'm sure they make other options...
5,500 for a 4 pc. That’s a little much for a drumset. Sounds great.
I’m not a huge Ludwig guy. But this kit looks nice and sounds good and I hope my church king Jesus gets it lol.
No doubt the drums sound good but Carter Mclean could make a trash bag sound amazing !

Mini classic lugs? Or or they the old honking ones? Aw. I have 10x9 12x10 14x16 16x18 and 18x22. Hmm. Black nickel.
For 23 years?! Like, don't you age? How old were you when you started Lion King, 11?
What's Your Real Name ?

I wish they were more flexible for musicians without a budget😢
With microphones
EVERY set sound the same ;)
Isn't poplar considered junk wood? A guitar wouldnt have.

Get Nick D back. This guy is sooo random.
👍🏻👍🏻
Please take some time and watch a few of his you tube videos. He is an amazing drummer with legendary feel.
They're both incredible drummers, and Carter is very well versed with Ludwig drums. This was an amazing demonstration and the drums sound incredible. I think Nick is on tour right now
