Absolutely wonderful conversation. It was just a matter of time until a philosophy student happens upon a street epistemologist.

What I heard is "I don't want to be disrespectful to people who think differently, therefore I will call it truth"

Calling a a non-factual assertion an opinion is not disrespectful. It's disrespectful to BS somebody. The vulgar call it jerking them off.

I don't understand why some people use the word truth to describe opinion or belief.
It makes the word truth mean nothing. Super confusing.
    Nice chat though.

      Right?

If we define truth as purely subjective, personal or local truths that are practical, then the word truth makes sense in most contexts
People who don't understand this could probably do with some travel. I believe that truths expose themselves as you travel. In the Sahara water may be seen as sacred whereas we flush it down the toilet every day. These realities are fundamental to the truths or truth we use and cling to for typically very practical reasons that can take on spiritual meaning for us

@@thimble288 I recommend letting everyone know when using this definition for truth. Otherwise, they might think you’re referring to accuracy. It’s true that water is made up of hydrogen and oxygen, regardless of how valuable it is and no matter where we are.

@@SoundEpistemology I learned that from Indiana Jones. "Archaeology is the search for fact, not truth."

@@thimble288 You mean the guy that saved his face by not looking at the magic “ark” being opened (Raiders), who was possessed by a demon (Temple of Doom), and instantly healed his dad’s chest wound by pouring water from the magic cup (Last Crusade)? Ok.

    Rosencrantz : Is that southerly?
Guildenstern : We came from roughly south.
Rosencrantz : Which way is that?
Guildenstern : In the morning, the sun would be easterly. I think we can assume that.
    Rosencrantz : That it's morning?
Guildenstern : If it is, and the sun is over there for instance, that would be northerly. On the other hand, if it's not morning and the sun is over there, that would still be northerly. To put it another way, if we came from down there, and it's morning, the sun would be up there, but if it's actually over there and it's still morning, we must have come from back there, and if that's southerly, and the sun is really over there, then it's the afternoon. However, if none of these are the case...
Rosencrantz : Why don't you go and have a look?
Guildenstern : Pragmatism. Is that all you have to offer?
Rosencrantz : I merely suggest that the position of the sun, if it is out, would give you a rough idea of the time. Alternatively, a clock, if it is going, would give you a rough idea of the position of the sun. I forget which you are trying to establish.
Guildenstern : I'm trying to establish the direction of the wind.
Rosencrantz : There isn't any wind.
[the shutters blow open and a paper windmill which Rosenkrantz is holding starts spinning]
    Rosencrantz : Draughts, yes!

Right, and it seems like if we don’t know the truth about the sun, we wouldn’t be able to be pragmatic about using that information.

@@SoundEpistemology A lot of people don't realize that the play / movie is entirely about existentialism. It's pure genius. 😬👍

His truth is an opinion. That's a rather rotten professor that's teaching pragmatism, IMO, but I wouldn't expect many good philosophy professors on the west coast. If you have an opinion about a fact you haven't done enough research.
Stoicism is a form of pragmatism, IMO, because it helps one to adjust to realities that can't be changed in the short term. That's generally good for mental health. Working for a long-term goal is also good for mental health, and we can hope that it will be realized eventually.

Stay tuned for an interview about stoicism that coincidentally happened on the same day and place there at UT Austin, Texas!
