Street Epistemology is a civil way to explore the quality of one’s reasoning.
Street Epistemology is also a movement that encourages our communities to engage in this exercise with each other and with ourselves.

    Hidden Spectrum
    Purpose:
While conducting Spectrum SE, it can be tempting to message your own views. Hidden Spectrum uses the same ideas that are used in Hidden Claim to address this.
    Steps:
Have the ILs decide on the claim and agree on the definitions of the terms used (before moving to their respective lines) without the practitioner knowing what the claim is.
Practitioner follows the normal protocol for Spectrum SE reminding the ILs to try to keep the claim hidden from the practitioner.
    Hidden Claim:
Recommendations for Hidden Claim SE beyond the normal ones:
Have the person write it down so it doesn’t fluctuate throughout the conversation. We want them to update their conclusions if they feel like it’s warranted, but for the purpose of the exercise, it’s recommended that they stick to it and reflect afterwards.
It sometimes seems to help if the claim is a statement about the world we share. This avoids claims about personal preferences and this step can actually generate a great exploration about objective reality.
It’s recommended that the conclusion is meaningful to them. The more meaningful the topic, the more meaningful the interview is likely to be.
It’s recommended that the conclusion they hold affects their behavior. It’s more impactful that way. I’m not that interested in claims that don’t affect their behavior.
It’s recommended that they form the claim in a positive form to avoid double negatives and confidence scale clarity. Example: “The grass is green.” (positive) instead of “The grass is not red.” (negative)
It’s recommended that the IL is open to changing their mind about it if they find out their reasons/verification methods are insufficient/unreliable to their own standards. This can also generate a great conversation.
I recommend informing them that their claim can be specific but the main reason should be very general. One example might be, instead of quoting a specific scripture in their holy book as their main reason, encourage them to be more general by saying something like, “scripture”.
Make sure to tell them that the idea is not for you to be able to guess the claim. The purpose is for them to reflect on their epistemology. It’s all about them.
    Advantages of Hidden Claim:
    * It focuses on the IL’s epistemology
    * It lowers the likelihood that I insert my views and biases
    * The IL understands that I don’t know the claim which allows them to think more openly without the need to get defensive
    * It can lower the anxieties of both ILs
    * The tendency to bloviate is lower
    * It forces the IL to think about the claim, reasons, and epistemology in ways they may not have before
    * It’s disarming
    * It achieves the goals while avoiding some common pitfalls
    * It offers new ideas for SEPs open to improving their SE
    * The claim can be kept confidential
    * It can be done with many people at once

Everyone should see this, to understand how beautiful, respectful, and most importantly FOCUSED ON EPISTEMOLOGY Spectrum SE can be if you truly care about reflexion and remove your bias out of the claim. I hope you'll make more and never fall to the dark side. Note I can truly enjoy this video and write this comment even before I know what the topic is. Proof I'm not biased by the topic.
I can still see risks that wouldn't exist in regular SE (such as, you take the risk they start arguing between themselves, ignoring you), but overall I think you did a great job.

Feelings are reliable, they say... I've said something about this before, about how the public sees scientists changing their minds all the time because they have to redraw the map of our common reality when new evidence comes in... And so because their feelings are always consistently pointing in the same direction, they are viewed as more reliable...
It makes a lot of sense when you think about it that way, but it's just because they don't understand that what scientists find aren't facts, but rather a better way to redraw the map of our common reality that is more consistent with the information that we now have available. It might change again because what they found wasn't actually a fact as in a truth with a capital "T", but instead it's simply the direction that the evidence that we currently have is pointing. That direction will change if new evidence comes in to warrant such a direction change.
What a great talk! Keep them coming! 😬👍♥️🏆💯

She said they might be a psychopath, but over time it becomes harder for them to hide their true colors. That might be true for normal people, but it is definitely not true for psychopaths. Too many people have been neighbors with and even married to serial killers and been completely unaware. 🤔
Also, the can of words worked really well here for them to be able to find something that they disagreed on! 😬👍

Emotion is not a good way to know if something is true or not. One can believe absurdities via emotion while evidence does not allow that.
