DSLRguide I watched the short film and this for its process. I admire the effort, and definitely gives it a thumbs up for the film. Great job, not a bad story but it lacked depth, I haven't been through what you had but with my experience I would suggest the story to have an arc even the slightest, because with three minutes there were too many shots being too sluggish in the sense in didn't bring up the matter. It's good that you make audience cross refer to their prior knowledge of the situation as supposed to telling a full story but that makes the story partial. The character lacked development in the sense that the whole story was being explained which i thought was bad. I would find that the night scene seems unnecessary especially if it's difficult to shoot and did little impact because I see no difference between it being shot in day or night. It didn't show how he was not acknowledged but just alone in the streets. Here is a really personal thing that ignoring the presence is not shown. What makes the homeless person feel that way, it's probably The eye contact, that look through part, no visuals supported that except it being a really quick and abrupt flashback. What about inhumane do you intend to bring out? From the attempt it seems like you want to leave a questioning ending with your statement however I would like to see that the dilemma was put clearer because the teacher was put so far away, what does she mean by she should have said something, she was so far away. As a teacher naturally it's difficult to find one that even goes through mental struggle standing up upon a public humiliation which was unnatural as well. I don't know how often that happens in your country but from my point of view what would be a better reflex was straight up chase him off or a more outrageous bully that screams across the thing that they smell. Which defines the main reason for the bully without saying at all if you composed it well. Then a teacher that rescues listens to find out as they settle down. Three minutes would be fine for that. Being an asshole and critique for so Long, I apologise but at the same time those were suggestions and my views, I love the cinematography, reminds me of many old school films like all others, it evoked some thoughts definitely. I appreciate the effort time and production to bring us the contemporary example of how classical filmmakers look at film. like my religion tells my story is king. My religion is filmmaking.

I think the worst thing a film maker could do is depend on other things/people to just start. When you do that you begin to make up excuses as to why you aren't making enough movies and you get stuck in this mentality. Like Casey Neistat once said and i quote, "you want to be a a filmmaker, you just start, you pick up any camera and you start shooting". And I agree 100 percent with what he means. And if you clearly look back at his content you could see that most of his movies were done by himself. No help from anyone. He was able to beat around that barrier most people give themselves about NOT MAKING ENOUGH and that's why he was able to get really good. Every dumb movie was something new he learned.

Diogo Almeida Back in my sixteen-millimeter days I did one with a Fisher Price camera that recorded on audio tape in black and white. it had a fabulous look and we transferred it to 16 mm and edited it at FAF in San Francisco. It was a silent film about gold mining. My exwife`s idea. Sometimes it is the cheapest thing you ever made that you're still the most proud of. Unfortunately I lost the damn reel.

We watched tons of your videos in preparation for filming and editing. Thank you for helping with these awesome informative videos, it is really helpful to have videos such as this one to show how to make interesting and professional looking films without professional equipment.
Keep up the great channel! Thanks again!

Hitfilm Express is awesome. The power it gives you for free is pretty amazing. I use Sony Vegas and that has me covered for 95% of what i do since I do mostly talking head interview style videos.
The first time I saw Filmstro in action (in a Film Riot episode) my mind was BLOWN. The level of control you have to score your video is simply amazing especially for someone like myself who is musically challenged.
I don't do enough video work to buy a sub to Filmstro but if I had more regular work I'd get a subscription in a heart beat. I recommend it to everyone I know who does video work.
When I need a quick music bed for a talking head, I normally just head over to Jukedeck or Incompotech and that works well enough for me. I try to avoid Incopotech because every indie film maker out there and their mother uses those tracks LOL.
Jukedeck is pretty interesting. The music is dynamically generated by a computer AI based on a few simple parameters who supply. The music ends up sounding a bit generic but for a simple music bed for a talking head video or tutorial it works great.
Again, great video Simon. glad to see you are getting great sponsors supporting your work (I REALLY like Filmstro) and hope you get more so you can create more great content.

I advice all the new filmmakers to start on their own using what they already have !!
In the cinema world there is not only money ! In the past the best film directors were producers, DOP, gaffer... and they just did what their minds told them !!!!! this is cinema, it's an art, it's a businesse but always needs good ideas.....not good equipment.....
Have you ever seen some backstages from kubrick's or hitchcock's movies ? Did you know that during shining's shootings Stanley used to go to jack's room saying that he had changed something in the script ?.....HE DID IT EVERYDAY !

some of the best films arent shot in 4k... think about that...i've seen a short film shot with a drone and it was better than half of these huge " red dragon" films

I needed this. I was getting really bogged down by how intimidating filmmaking can be. But this served as a comforting reminder that sometimes it's okay to just strip it down to bare essentials, and just make something. Nothing fancy. Just a camera, a mic, and a script. Thanks for this.

I greatly appreciate your honest insight and advice. I personally struggle with trying to plan every detail flawlessly before ever even picking up the camera. I've recently challenged myself to use what I have to make a short-film every month. It doesn't have to be anything amazing, it just has to be done by the end of the month.
This forces me not to slow down so I can get it perfect, but instead I have to focus on moving forward and doing the best I can with my own resources and available time.
I'd highly suggest doing the same to anyone who struggles with the same thing.
