Lucky for you that these cams are so affordable and high quality enough to do that. When i was on school i only had a bulky VHS-C camcorder that i could only take with me on rare occasions like class trips. Tapeless camcorders were still too expensive and sucked so hard quality wise. just was given an old 2000s cam out of my aunts closet and i've been filming my summer on it. it's just so refreshing to capture moments without any pressure and people never act weird in front of an old camcorder. been having a lot of fun capturing these moments!
That’s very true, back in 2012 I was filming so much on my iPod touch and nobody had a clue cause back then it was before everyone used it for getting attention and “catching” people looking stupid, it was mostly just people who truly loved film making or recording memories. Those were my best videos cause they were candid, it was my friends truly being themselves(which is the version of them I love) and once they knew I was making videos they all started showing off and trying too hard to be funny. I definitely miss those days. Now everyone is paranoid of being recorded because they’ve made a fake version of themselves on their social media of them looking “perfect” and having an “amazing” life.. and since they have “fans” aka 100 followers and are “famous” now if someone takes a video of them that person is the paparazzi to them.
I HARDLY (if ever) comment on videos but I gotta tell you I look forward to your stuff every week. It may sound weird but the authenticity and pureness of your videos make me take a step back and think about what’s really important in life, especially when things gets chaotic. Keep it up dude 🤙🏼

Mahalo My Dude and IFHT films have made the dad cam an absolute must in their videos for a long time. With the right edit there is just no replacement, it offers a perspective, especially if you grew up in the 90's, that is just priceless.
We reached a very clinically clean digital images that got people feel everything is so artificial, out of that black pro mist and glow filters were created to tone done the sharp ultra clean image. even more companies like Fuji and now Sony are adding "retro-like" filters to their cameras. What's funny is that instead of getting high end cameras, lenses and filters then edit in post to cut down the sharp digital look and add film grain, we should just get old gear like this which will give the intended results from the get go!
Last month, in Goodwill, for $17.99 I saw a Canon HF R500, similar to yours? And like you, I too am finding many uses! Especially when I figured out how to set the external mic audio level manually.

I went to Best Buy in April and told the salesperson I wanted a camcorder to film my seven year olds first play. He recommended I buy a Sony A74 with a large zoom lens. I politely advised that I had several mirrorless cameras but I wanted a camcorder that has decent sound. We went back and forth before I ended up buying what I went in there for. A sony with a large battery that hangs off of the back. I mounted it to my tripod and was all ready to start filming. The Janitor said "you can't have that in here. no professional equipment!" I replied that it was a dad cam and that it was at least ten years old. "Oh Oh, that's okay then." I ended up getting great footage of my kid and left a happy dad. I enjoyed your video because filming your friends, family and buddies is what it's all about. Sure you can use a phone, but there is something magic about having a dedicated tool you can whip out when needed.
Very inspired! Love your storytelling style. I learn to shoot short film since my high school with my dad's Sony Camcorder Camera record on DV8 tape, that brings back a lot of memories. Stellar filmmaking skills when you are so skilled at portraying the overpopulated Mad Max chaos of the North Shore as such peaceful and glorious place. It can be indeed glorious when it is new and fresh, so perhaps I'm just totally over it, and so much happier to be back in the PNW. Enjoy, and may the madness completely reflect off you and yours' stoke forcefield.
You're an extremely underated TH-camr, you bring such creative and new qualities on here. I know your channel is gonna blow up, I'm here to say I'll see it soon ❤
Great story - I've spent lots of money on camera bodies and lenses but there's nothing enjoyable to me about capture personal memories on a mirrorless or dslr body. I've been trying to convince myself to get a camcorder recently and your video pushed me in the right direction
I actually have a close relative of this camera (HF R40 instead of R400) that I use for field interviews. Eventually I’ll get something newer, but you can get decent results with some planning.
I recently bought a Sony CX405 to replace my old Canon camcorder (probably same model as yours) and this video precisely describes me as a photographer/videographer, and my love for these devices. Thank you sincerely!
Dad here. I just got a Sony AX43A not just for recording vlogs and my band but both my kids are at the age where they’re doing sports, camp activities, school events and all kinds of other random stuff and as someone who has precious few recordings of myself and my family growing up, I don’t want my kids to get to be my age and not have all these memories to look back on, share with their kids, embarrass them at their wedding rehearsal dinner, make them laugh, cry, miss me and my wife when we’re gone… so much emotion and power residing in such a seemingly tiny and insignificant little bundle of plastic, silicon and wires.
Man, I got an Sony Handycam that records in MiniDV tapes early this year because I was kind of sick of 4K and ultra HD stuff and Ive been loving it and use it a lot for skateboarding footage with my homies. It’s not the camera we use that matters the most…
I’m actually thinking about buying a camcorder for filming concerts, underwater and just nature overall. I’ve been fascinated with my parents’ camcorder ever since I was little and always hoped to get it from them when I grew up, but now I want to buy a more updated one, preferably one that can record underwater as well. It would be neat to have a Jack of all trades camera that can film the three environments I’d film the most (underwater, nature, and concerts). Maybe I could ask for it for my birthday, that’s coming up in a few months, so I got some time to ask for it. I don’t expect them to say yes, but who knows? Maybe they will buy me one if I promise to use it often, they’ve done that before with other more expensive gifts in the past (not that I often asked for them, those moments were rare).
I've always preferred camcorders for video. They're great for fast changing action scenes eg dancers on a stage moving about. Currently own a Sony AX53 which produces very nice results.
To me, camcorders are waaaay better than dslr and everything else. I just love them. Never been and never will be on dslr- mirrorless-and so on train...
at some point the camera world became a tech company and forgot that the thing we like was the stories and memories that we wanted to capture. We dont all need 400 million bijion pixels, sometimes 12 work.
I'll never be without my camcorders! I currently have at least ten different models, mostly Canon and Sony. I grew up before cell phones even existed, so if you wanted to be a videographer, you HAD to have a camcorder. Phones will never compete.
I dont think it's making comeback, but rather just a '90s nostalgic core' fad that is raging among the youngest millennials age group or the Z gens, reliving their childhood or the era that never got to live (for younger Z gens). I grew up with camcoder from 1998 to 2004 and I wouldn't want to have it again because the video quality was bad and the tape cassette was expensive. but its nice to see the modern edit touch that you guys are doing so keep it up
I love my little canon camcorder being it does great videos. I paid little money for it due to the seller stated it did not hold a charge. I simply Amazon the battery bought two new ones for under 30 bucks. And yes the camera works on battery it was just a dead battery that held no charge. Now I grab it all the time and use it

It can be indeed glorious when it is new and fresh, so perhaps I'm just totally over it, and so much happier to be back in the PNW. Enjoy, and may the madness completely reflect off you and yours' stoke forcefield.
Such a precious video. Videos like these are so rare to find on TH-cam
You have convinced me to buy a camcorder 😂! great job keep it up dude
This was lovely. Thank you 🙏🏼
You're an extremely underated TH-camr, you bring such creative and new qualities on here. I know your channel is gonna blow up, I'm here to say I'll see it soon ❤
dudeeee, what did you shoot the footage that was not the dadcam with? colors look amazing.
As a dad, i can confirm that dad cam is a universal term.
Eventually I’ll get something newer, but you can get decent results with some planning.
thanks to video, it brought back my memories. Yesterday I used my Sony CCD-TVR99E again; it still works after 25 years.
I recently bought a Sony CX405 to replace my old Canon camcorder (probably same model as yours) and this video precisely describes me as a photographer/videographer, and my love for these devices. Thank you sincerely!
I've never let go of camcorders, and it's refreshing to see them come back.
Number on question though - how did you color grade this? CinePrint16?
Love the video and the reminder! Well done!
I am go glad I found our old sony hdr-cx130. Gonna try to take it everywhere and shoot as much as possible!
Simple, yet cool and entertaining = just as it should be, enjoyed this little film documentary .... well done ....
Man, I got an Sony Handycam that records in MiniDV tapes early this year because I was kind of sick of 4K and ultra HD stuff and Ive been loving it and use it a lot for skateboarding footage with my homies.
It’s not the camera we use that matters the most…
yeah the "aesthetic" high school girls are bringing camcorders back.
They just gotta ruin everything I love
Gotta respect the Dad cam quick draw. Rad Hawaii trip and video
I had a small canon point and shoot that was so fun to whip out. Lost it in texas only 6 months later :(
Dude, it is a very pretty video. Can you throw some light into how you graded the camcorder footage? Did you use any LUT"s?
Hi, which camera did you use?
@johnfoley4023 Thanks so much bro
Lovely vid! Perfect choice of words! I know what I'm doing this weekend! 👌
at some point the camera world became a tech company and forgot that the thing we like was the stories and memories that we wanted to capture. We dont all need 400 million bijion pixels, sometimes 12 work.
Image holds up even with that sweet grade!
One of the most beautiful videos I have seen in a while
I'll never be without my camcorders! I currently have at least ten different models, mostly Canon and Sony. I grew up before cell phones even existed, so if you wanted to be a videographer, you HAD to have a camcorder. Phones will never compete.
So good 😍
Indeed
I dont think it's making comeback, but rather just a '90s nostalgic core' fad that is raging among the youngest millennials age group or the Z gens, reliving their childhood or the era that never got to live (for younger Z gens).
I grew up with camcoder from 1998 to 2004 and I wouldn't want to have it again because the video quality was bad and the tape cassette was expensive. but its nice to see the modern edit touch that you guys are doing so keep it up
Doubt it too. Was sensing fake nostalgia from this video and the interactions in it.
How did you color grade the camcorder footage? All i have is a Canon Vixia (just like yours but an R800) as a main. (and don't have a phone rn)
Nice video. I will have to get together all my old camcorders.
Looks sick how much messing around in post did you do or was it just a color grade and cropping to 4:3?
I love my little canon camcorder being it does great videos. I paid little money for it due to the seller stated it did not hold a charge. I simply Amazon the battery bought two new ones for under 30 bucks. And yes the camera works on battery it was just a dead battery that held no charge. Now I grab it all the time and use it
Love the story! Great job Brother!
Thats how i use my camcorders...straight dad cam and i love them. I never bring my pro cameras on family outings. They're too cumbersome.
I’ve been using a handycam because it’s so easy to work with and carry around
