    When I first started wearing makeup, I went to a Lancome counter to have my foundation shade matched. I was a teenager in college so this was a huge splurge for me, but I didn't want to look like a fool, and I grew up as the only female in a household of males and had never before been allowed to wear makeup so I had a huge learning curve. I got to my dorm all excited to try my first foundation and the crazy lady had matched the foundation to my freckles. The color she picked out had to have been like 5 shades too dark for me. I opened it up, stared at it in shock, closed it back up and and immediately returned it. I went to CVS pharmacy, got the girl working there to help me and got a foundation that matched me perfectly for 1/4th the price of the Lancome. So much for thinking more expensive is better. Anyways, just a fun story of my first foundation shopping experience, thought I'd share. :)

      I might be a late here :D but same happened to me with urban decay and their naked foundation thing. I went in and I don´t know what she was doing, but she said I was 5.5...I am actually 0.5! Good job I said thanks, I´ll think about itand slowly walked away :D

      I know this reply is several years later but I went to try Dior foundation because they have foundations with warm olive undertones and the sales lady INSISTED i was extremely fair and gave me sample of shade 0N. It made me look like a ghost. She completely ignored me when I said my undertone is olive and not neutral. Later I went to another shop to get the shade I originally wanted to try and well... shade 2WO is my perfect shade.

      Oh my goodness ! As a woman with freckles all over my face, redness and a pale neck, probably quite celtic skin ,I can relate. Expensive beauty counters always get it so wrong. Maybe its the horrible artificial light ,the "high technology " machines or lack of skill, but they always match me at least 3 shades too dark. It is really difficult to find a good colour match that works well. I feel your pain !

    Lisa, I would like to really thank you!! Yesterday, after 13years I just bought, my very first PERFECT MATCH foundation! this morning, first time in my 30 y.o. life I feel like my face is one "body" with my neck, my chest and my hands! :D After watching your video I was a bit embarrassed asking the girl on the beauty counter for giving me two samples of colour of foundations close to my skin tone, but after all it was really ok, she didn`t look at me like I wanted to have some free make up ( she quite understood me,although I had to push her a bit to give me two not one colour) and NOW I FINALLY HAVE IT!!! :D I didnt even supposed to think that my foundation should be that yellow, I was always looking for some rosy tones, but although my face is rosy, my body is yellow, and thats what my foundation should be!!

    Lol I think the consultants at my local Sephora should see this... They often test foundations on my hands and when I said that my hands tend to be darker than my face, they'll rudely said nahhh... It's the same... Until one time they actually tried on my face and I was right, but they are sooo arrogant, although their own make up looks horrible... :( i cant even ask for samples to take home without buying more than $400 items in total...

      I don't trust sephora with their foundation matching. My face is way darker than my body due to acne scarring and hyperpigmentation and they always match me way darker and cooler than the skin on my body. I end up looking like I'm wearing a red mask if I were to wear the foundations they match me with.

      Very common when you go to makeup counters. I call them make up elitist. You know the ones that judge you as you first come in with little to no make up. Personally I work in cosmetics and I encourage people to really try and get the undertones right. Some “artist” are so lazy they just assume anyone with dark hair is warm or if you’re tan you are automatically in the dark category. That being said we do deal with A LOT of people who like to think they are a lot lighter (sometimes darker) than they really are, whether it’s colorism or not I tell them it’s better to match than look like a ashy mess. For your instance color matching to someone’s hand is lazy at best.

I know how much time these tutorials take and how much you can charge for your "knowledge" and for you to not only spend your time creating this for all of us, but to just freely give this helpful information.. Is truly truly appreciated! I do hundreds and hundreds of videos in my online classes, but only a few videos every so often to the public on TH-cam.. And you have inspired me to give more freely the knowledge I have in my own art. Thank you for your inspiration all around. Xoxoxoxo 😘 (a newbie into makeup and a new fan)

      When I first started wearing makeup, this was when I was 16, no one EVER told me about things like this, ESPECIALLY not undertones, and how they are so important in finding your foundation shade. It took me a long time to find out what it was actually but I DO remember one makeup said something about a foundation being too orange on me, so I know I'm not warm. I'm neutral-warm in undertone.

    I can't believe Sephora and most makeup artists can't help people figure this out. Thank you. It's so ridiculous how many shades of foundation we have that are wrong. I've never been shade matched properly whether by a person or the stupid shade machine. They might test a little bit on the face but not to the jaw and neck like you did.

    This is great! so helpful. The one thing i always do if im buying an expensive high end foundation is go in with no makeup and ask the counter staff to apply it all over for me and then i will wear it the rest of the day. they are usually very happy to - especially if you go in when it isnt too busy. can then see it in daylight/see how it wears. if it suits you can then buy it! ive been matched wrong too many times in expensive foundations and i think the lighting in department stores in particular can make it hard to get a good match.

    Split the difference between your face and neck to find a common ground shade that will bring these two areas together (without having to make-up your neck everyday)... when your chest is exposed you can always add a touch of bronzer or darker power to this area to help it blend in better X

    You are spot on! This video is by FAR the most helpful with figuring out skin tones. I have redness in my cheeks and you're right there's a patch of redness that comes down from the center of my cheek to my jaw line. Because of the redness, people assume I have pink undertones and I have been wrongly shade matched countless times because I actually have yellow undertones. Knowing your undertones is the first step & you HAVE to look at your neck and chest.

    Thank you so much for this video. It was very helpful. The last time I bought foundation with the help of a sales associate, she used some sort of scanner/camera which recommended foundations and colors based on the skin she held it up against. The problem is that I have yellow/neutral tones on my body and neck, but a lot of redness in my face. She matched it to my face. I ended up getting foundation that was the equivalent to a pink face mask.

      Sarah Laws This happened to me, too! I was told I was very yellow, but I'm more neutral with pinks, and she sent me home with yellow foundations. I looked like a pumpkin! And, it's so dark in there (I'm assuming you went to Sephora like I did?), HOW can the scanner get an accurate reading? Blah.

    Lisa I love your videos, I think you are brilliant! My face is much lighter than my neck & chest, but undoubtedly, every time I shop for foundation, the SA insist that the foundation should disappear into the face. They will also say to that you should warm your face up with bronzer to match your neck. I agree with you completely, but it is always a challenge when you are dealing with a SA that does not share your views.

    It took me forever to finally figure out my skin tone and matching foundations because I have a very yellow pale skin tone.. almost sickly looking. so I have to look for pale yellow based foundations that are usually the second lightest shade in the range... I also notice that foundations oxidize so much on me and turns darker (espeacily drugstore ones) so I have to go lighter than I would. and people always wonder why I buy such light foundations that's why. the foundation always seems to turn very warm toned with my skin. I also have to stay away from stick concealers and loose fibre stippling brushes as they make a mess on my face. It takes a while to find the right color, formulation and tools to apply foundation.

    Great video! What I'm confused about is the difference between olive, warm and yellow; sometimes foundations even offer "peach undertone" shades.

    • @emraldsandy
      @emraldsandy 10 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Peach is yellow with a little bit of red added to it. So it's more towards the orange side. Olive is yellow with green added to it. Yellow, red and blue are primary colors. All of these colors are present in foundation to give it color and intensity. Some have more yellow, some have more red, some have more blue to suit the undertones in our skin. Warm is a arbitrary word. For most brands warm meant foundations with more yellow tones. For MAC warm means foundations with more red or pink tones. If you mix red with a little bit of white you get pink. I know you didn't ask me but I hope this helps.

      +Claire Dunn same situation. very pale with warm undertones (i'm told. however, i have green and bluish looking veins. silver and gold look good on me, and blues, purples and jewel tones look better on me than warm colors). every foundation that is fair enough, is too pink! (especially drugstore). so far, the one i've liked the best is MakeUpForEver, Y205. but, i just used a sample. it's 42.00. wah!

      @joycevandergeest9862 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      yellow toned should actually match everyone, you dont want to make your face more red then it already is and you dont wanna end up looking like a strawberry :) if you have a red undertone you could use a yellow toned foundation to neutrilise the redness

    • @lauroraborealis4014
      @lauroraborealis4014 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Joyce van der Geest no, you wouldn't want to add more red, but pink undertones mean that a foundation that would blend seamlessly into my neck, would look like an orange mask on their face. the foundation itself it never really pink. it's more, beige. cool-toned. i have heard others say that yellow should work for everyone, and while a yellow corrector, to neutralize redness is a good thing, but not as a true color match.

    • @sfex9
      @sfex9 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      same situation: pale but warm, patchy dry spots, acne, redness, sensitivity. I know how impossible it is. I found THE shade last month after 5 years. Unfortunately I don't think it helps bc it's from an italian small brand, dolomia, and my shade is the lighter one anyway, but I'm not extremely pale I think, just pale. I mean I'm "extremely" pale to have mediterranean skin, but I still don't have the snowwhite translucent complexion. I just wanted to cheer you up because I got lucky eventually and you will too.

    I've only recently gotten into makeup and this whole time I thought that I had a cool tone because to me my veins look blue-ish but apparently I'm not. I went to an Estee Lauder stand and the lady said I was warm toned but the foundation she gave is like 3 shades lighter and makes me look like I've got an ashy, white face like a ghost. My friend recently bought a foundation from estee lauder and it matches my skin so much better. I'm still unsure tho because makeup is expensive af. I want to be 100% happy with what I buy. Ain't nobody got money to just throw away lol

      I think you need to be careful on what your skin tone is. Like what Lisa said in the video, try to analyse your skin tone in good day light. Don't simply listen to what the BA told you, because they don't really know your face. You need to be clever about it, take some samples and go home and try it.

      ***** that's what I've been trying to do but its actually really hard. I've got redness on my cheeks because of acne scarring but the rest of my face is quite tan. But my neck is whiter than my face so any foundation that matches my neck is too light for my face. So unless I get loads of samples to try all over my face I can never tell if its the right shade. Only problem is most drugstores don't do samples to take home, mostly high street stores do :l

      Aleena Amjad Well yeah I did try mixing them together but it still didn't match right :/ I'm going to go back to the store again and get something else tested but it seems like the lady's there just choose any colour and I end up wasting $35 for the foundation. If only I had someone like Lisa who could help me in person that'd be amazing and save me so much time.

    im extremely red, and my redness goes from my cheeks down to my jaw and chin! once i got my skin matched in a shop and i was o r a n g e, cause she did the test on my red patch! turns out the company doesnt cater to pale girls! im STILL on the hunt for a pale enough foundation, atm i mix about 5 at once, cause reasonably priced pale foundations are normally matte, and im so dry! the struuuugggllleee

    Thank you so much for this video. After years of struggling to find my correct shade, I was able to discover that the ladies at the cosmetic counter always talked me in to shades with pink tones. My color, which is similar to yours, actually looks better with a more neutral shade. It looks so much better with my body and complements the rest of my makeup beautifully. I can't thank you enough!

    I am 24 years old and i have never worn foundation. my skin isn't perfect i get breakouts and scars however I'm concern about my wedding and appearance when i start working. I would like to look professional and clean instead of having people stare at my pimples and scars that are disgusting.
    I have no idea how to shop for foundation, i, in fact never owned one. the only make up I have is mascara and eyeliner. ( i wear mascara everyday for school, but eyeliner on fancy days) I like to keep things very very simple because of the way I am. I often touch my face and/or hug people & i don't want my make up to be everywhere. I even can't get used to wearing lipstick because I end up biting/sucking my lip most of the time.
    It would be awesome to consult you in person so I can know what make up works for me. basics all that i need to know...

      I should try the L'Oréal True Match foundation, it matches for real really really good. but when finding the correct shade you need to find out what your undertone is (warm or cold) to find a correct shade, and you can always go to professionals to get matched

      +Covet Petrichor (TVA) Hi! I would recommend something light, not a heavy duty foundation but something like a bb cream or a tinted moisturizer. You can also opt for a foundation if you want, or add a concealer with that too for extra coverage. After you've applied the foundation, dust it with powder to set it (or a setting spray if you like) just to make the cream stay on your face and so it won't transfer everywhere your face touches.
      Good luck!

    Absolutely best tips ever! Thanks a lot. I am now more confident about choosing the shade that doesn't perfectly match my face (which is cold, red) but matches my body (which is nicely warm, olive).... I feel more confident wearing warm colour on my face that matches my body instead of choosing cold/neutral colors matching my face but not the chest, arms, hands...

    as i've aged, my face has become darker toned than my neck/shoulder area which has made wearing foundation next to impossible from the lack of knowledge on how to pick the right color. various online research, consultations with sephora/ulta/etc reps have led to (surprisingly?) dead ends. nothing i found explained how to remedy this as well as you have in this video. god bless you, lisa eldridge, and thank you!

    I'm so glad that this video was created. In my late teens and twenties, when I suffered from moderate acne, the makeup consultants at department stores would always "match" me with foundations with pink undertones. Seeing as I'm half Korean, let's just say they were not ideal. Thankfully, I went to a Precriptives counter in college (when they were still in stores) and finally had a salesperson who saw the yellow undertones in my neck and areas not affected my acne. Made a world of difference!
