      @@TappPlumbing Layperson here. Pulled the cartridge without shutting off the water. Lots of water all over the bathroom happened before I could get to the water meter valve. All good now, and the bathroom has never been cleaner!

    PTL! Thank you so much for including the instruction for applying the Scald Guard in this video at 2:15 ! By adjusting mine by one click to the right, or clockwise, I'm now safely showering with All the hot water I want from my new water heater. The instructions from Price Pfister don't include this with a new or replacement cartridge. There's no telling how much money Price Pfister has spent replacing cartridges because consumers don't know this!

    Very great advice just finished doing the actual job, it took more time shutting off the water than it did replacing the parts thanks to this video. Water turn off and let drain, 15 minutes. Actual replacement 5 minutes. Trip to the hardware store 10 minutes. Not having to pay a professional plumber 400 dollars.

    I just replaced mine on a Sunday morning AFTER nearly boiling in the shower. The COLD side froze up and was only allowing full HOT to come out. My set up was like what you removed-however what you replaced it with seemed like a one part-molded unit.
    Must be a replacement option I’m guessing? Either way you made it look easy-and it actually was.Just the apprehension not knowing what could go wrong was the worst part of it.
    Thank TH-cam for suggesting YOUR video one hour AFTER I did the job-I saw a few other videos that were too damn long so good job helping us all out with this👊🏻These type of videos HELP people immensely.

    Im having a hard to turn handle, i been through 3 handles already (acrylic) dont last very long, my only thought is the cartridge

      @@BuildwithMooney As far as I know there only three different cartridges that would go in there . You should easily be able to figure out which one you need if you know how old the valve is. If you don’t know that , then yes .

      @@TappPlumbing Thanks Tapp, I finally figured it out. Plumbing and Electrical I usually leave to the experts, because I've been known to screw stuff up! The part is coming in the mail today, of course the big box stores don't have many replacement parts for this brand. Thank you for getting back to me.

      @ Those are a little hard to find indeed. Maybe next time something like that happens you could take a picture of the handle to a local plumbing supply house and someone at the counter could help you out. Best of luck with your project.     Got my cartride, but not sure where to shut of my water at. Main outside? I dont see any other shutoff valve in shower hole.

      @@Desert_Hermits I always like to use the meter to cut my water off to the entire house. There are almost never valves to cut the shower off by itself. Best of luck with your project!

    Do you know what the metal piece that fits into the plastic end of the cartridge is called? Mine is not there so handle won’t stay on. Thanks!

      @@Carsox more than likely an adapter or extension. Have you tried to look it up on there website? There is normally an exploded view .

    Hey all! So I did this and and it worked great, but I have a question:
    I did this, and now my hot and cold are switched! I made sure the W was on the bottom. How did that happen?
    Also, I was curious about the scald guard. Any tips on why/how to set that ?

      @@TheSnowbutcher Did you happen to notice how the original catridge was situated before pulling it out? I am not positive if you can turn them 180 degrees to get back to the way it was or not . To set the scald guard pull it out and twist it .

      @@Steevo423 I have wrapped hose clamps around them for something to grip or get a tool on. This is an easy way to get cut however , be careful please!

    I have a question, I tried to open the handle screw with Allen wrench but I couldn't do it looks like the screw is messed up, any suggestion on how to open the Allen screw? Please help

      @@Error404GodNotFound If the screw is stripped you will have to have a new handle . most of the time you will either have to drill out the screw which ruins the handle or just saw the handle off .       @@Error404GodNotFound You should be able to find an acrylic handle that screws in from the front until your new handle arrives from Home Depot. Good to know you have the cartridge removed and replaced one way or the other👍.

    I bought a replacement cartridge and for some reason the large O-ring is not seating properly in the groove, looks like it’s oversized. Is this normal?

      @@KevinJohnson-kb9wi It should fit with maybe a little protruding. This is a very difficult question to answer without seeing exactly what is going on. Keep me posted if you can spare the time please.

    When my shower is running hot water all of a sudden it changes to cold on its own and if it's running cold water all of a sudden it changes to hot water, would it fix the problem if I change the cartridge? Thank you

      @@Carsox Have you tried to twist it ? Some times you have to wiggle them up and down and from side to side with a fair amount of force when pulling. Be aware the catridge could break off in pieces. You also have to be aware not to snap off the pipe or fittings in the wall , especially if you have cpvc .Best of luck and keep us posted if you can make time please!

    Just replaced the cartridge and the handle is so tight to turn the water on I broke the knob. I swapped it out again and it is still hard to turn. What’s going on.

      @ There is a slight chance you got a bad one that was brand new. I guess you did thoroughly inspect the brass valve body and make sure it was very clean as well?

    What? wait! You snuck in a different cartridge then the one you took out. I wanted to see what keeps the inner part from turning. Also I tried what you did and felt the new cartridge was too long.

      @@brianjohnson8883 Are you telling me the catridge would not seat into the valve body? That would be very strange. I have only seen one version of that catridge. Where did you get your replacement catridge?

      @@TappPlumbing the one you took out was two pieces, 974291 and 971-2500, (available on Amazon), just like what I removed from a valve body. You replaced it with a single piece cartridge that looked like 9740420 … did I miss something?

      @@TappPlumbing I just now found documentation that shows part 974-042 can replace two different two-piece cartridges.
      I will try it again, it went into the valve body, but after I tightened the screws, the stem was very stiff to turn (yes OEM part). I put back the original parts and ordered new.

      No, if you remove it then there is no stop mechanism for the stem.

    What's the name of that white thing that jas the 2 tabs on the side? Ours broke. I need to replace that

      If you are asking about the piece in the very middle of the cartridge it is called the stem. You are gonna have to replace the entire cartridge. Best of luck , keep us posted with your progress if you have time please.

    I have replaced the cartridge before and now it won't shut o ff the water. It's leaking VERY badly. I installed a new one they sent me and straight out the box it is still letting a lot of water through. Any ideas

      You can try to take it back out and look very carefully inside the valve body. Make sure the oval shaped o rings were not left from the old and there is no other obstruction or debris in there. Let us know what happens please?

      @@TappPlumbing LOL i'm smacking myself. I DID leave the old o rings in from the first valve!. It worked on the second valve for a few years before it started gushing. I decided to look inside and both o rings were still in, which meant the second valve is good after all!

      It may be best to take the trim off the valve and take a picture of the front of the cartridge . That way when you to Ace if all they have is after market cartridges you will know exactly what it looks like . Good luck!!!

      I honestly am not sure . It is a left over from an install kit but I think it is a 3/32. Just be very careful not to strip the screw if possible. That would make things much more complicated. Good luck and keep us posted please.

      @@TappPlumbing it is 3/32. I know cause I almost stripped mine using the wrong size allen! My issue now is the handle just doesnt want to slide off. Itʻs 17 years old and probably calcium deposits have it stuck. Any suggestions before i try and pry it off with a couple of crowbars?

      If it is acrylic you could try a handle puller . You may have to cut it off regardless of what it is made of. Best of luck and keep us posted if you have time please.

    Stuff a rag or towel under the valve and the screws won't go down the wall.
