    Wow... Now this is an amazing video for all cajon players... Many things which you talked about I have gradually realised while playing cajon along all this while. The last section "play for the music not for our EGO" is one thing which all of us face at one point of time n really need to get over it to become a much better team player... I hope all the percussion players see this video n look into our minds when we r performing n practicing n be better musicians 😀

    Very interesting and challenging approach. I liked your ongoing, at times self critical, feedback, most of which I totally got but I should say that overall your playing was great and the majority of the 'mistakes' you highlighted would mostly have gone by completely unnoticed. However it's the feel/sound that may be better at times is always well worth attention. I do cringe at a lot of the videos I make, even the ones I put out on TH-cam or FB, my reasoning being that I'm very much still learning and not geared up to creating perfect videos but am more about the overall feel and expressing myself. We do always have to watch ego and overplaying though! Thanks for this one

    • @rosslmccallum
      @rosslmccallum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! Yeah the idea for the video changed from just wanting to make a nice performance to seeing it as a chance to express some more of what I feel is important for me (and all players) to improve with next. Maybe to balance the critical approach in this one, I’ll do another song starter challenge where I just mention everything that sounded good to me. Thanks and have a great weekend, Dave!

    Dear Ross. Thank you for this great video ! I came back to subscribing and find your book awesome to give sense to your library of vidéos. Also you are really helping me find again some pleasure in playing. As I am really beginner but already playing with a band of friends, I am trying to add microphone to my Cajon. You have a video on how to do it, but I feel like your configuration here is pretty different. My goal is to get the best out of the snares, with, if possible, the feel of the cords. Would you mind sharing the mics configuration you are using here ? And maybe reference of material you would trust ? Thanks for the support and energy shared already !

      Edouard, thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience with the course and the book. I’m glad it has made the difference I hoped it would.
      It’s certainly time for an updated recording technique and microphone placement video. I’m also really happy with my sound as you hear it in this video so I think it would be worth making that video soon. Thanks!

    Hi Ross, song #8 in the video you're doing finger roll with the left hand but in the sheet notation the finger roll is with the right hand, can you please explain? Thanks

    • @rosslmccallum
      @rosslmccallum  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Nuno, yeah there’s a lot going on in number 8! I improvised so it’s a little different each bar. I noticed that I settled into a groove in the second half where the 32nd note finger roll came out on the & of 4. The other times when there’s a finger roll on the left hand, it’s leading into or being part of a a fill. So the sheet music just represents what I feel is the anchor groove. What you could do is try keeping that “anchor groove” going yourself while exploring different times to add in the finger roll on the left hand. Try the e of beat 2 😉 if you have more questions please let me know!

    Love your videos! Do you have any showing and comparing the different types and makes of standard, box-shaped cajons? I am considering a second one but since I live in a rural area, I am unable to play one before buying it. Different makers use different snare set ups. I need to hear those differences before buying another cajon. Thanks!

    • @rosslmccallum
      @rosslmccallum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree with getting some sound samples in videos before buying. I don’t have any on my channel here but you can definitely find a lot on TH-cam. The brand I play, MEINL has a video of every cajon they sell to my knowledge!

      @@rosslmccallum Thank you for replying! If you ever need a new video idea and so long as contract obligation do not hinder you, I think people would be interested to hear a direct comparison between Sela vs. Meinl vs. Schlagwerk vs. Pyle vs. whatever. Finding company sponsored product videos is easy but I am having a hard time finding good comparison vids. Thanks again.
