    Learning how to mix vocals to a 2track beat is a must in today's day and age. I've discussed this topic before, but now we're going to look at a more nuanced case.

    So grateful for your content matt! I came back to watch this video again i have to use this technique now. The kick in this rnb beat just isnt kicking no matter the enhancements i make lol but i believe this is what needs to be done.

    can you believe that sometimes there is nothing to do but mix the vocals

      On rare occasion, it does happen.

    It is still baffling to me that people still would choose carving or ducking out the beat. This is clearly a better solution. Great video as always Matt. Been a fan since pro audio file days 💯

    I tell you what I was searching when I came to this video. When I think of mixing/adding vocals to an instrumental, it can be either singing along or more interestingly adding vocals that I already recorded separately, in the same key as the instrumental I want to synch my vocals with. Now I have sung in the same key so pitch is not the problem, the actual problem would be to exactly match the tempo of my vocals to instrumental so that I sound exactly in synch with bass and snare. In workstation keyboards while composing beats, there's a "quantize" function that arranges your high hats, ride cymbal etc, there should be something like a quantize function to synch your vocals exactly to the rhythm timing of the instrumental. Do tell me of some AI or other software if possible.

    Very cool take - I am currently working on a tv post production right now where I am not allowed to touch the Music stem, so I was facing this issue from a kind of different perspective. Like I have learned a lot about depth by just being able to work on the vocals by using different kinda of tools in order to make the vocals sit in the mix by almost simulating it being in the mix without processing the actual music at all. Would be very cool to see your take on that as well! You really already do exactly that though great stuff

      @WeissAdvice  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I've never heard of a re-recordist or music editor "not being allowed to touch the production stems." That's literally why music engineers run stems out for sync - so that ya'll can do that kind of stuff when needed.
      But at that point I would just do the job as told. Mix in the music high enough to provide the mood and low enough to duck the dialogue. OR say fuck it and alter the stems anyway LOLOLOLOL (probably what I would do)

    Am I going crazy? It sounds like a weird double transient thing is going on continuously with that kick (4 transients when you have the two hits close together). Also yeah that fabfilter could just be replaced by a sidechained soothe or trackspacer if resonances are what you care about.

    • @WeissAdvice
      @WeissAdvice  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yea, there's a weird flam thing that's baked into the track. That's a big part of why I filtered down the added kick, to not make it worse! Good catch. Soothe, trackspacer, it's all kinda gonna do the same thing. If you run a test of all of them side by side and find a preference let me know.

      Ah, the ol' completely mono beat - there's tricks to it, but mainly, just learn to love the mono-ness

    Do you still mix hybrid nowadays?

      Hybrid meaning console + computer? No, no console. Hybrid like I have outboard gear? Yes.

    Ok hear me out. You’re amazing and I love hearing your experitise! Usually I just go to this mode. Wavesfactory trackspacer. Mid side mode -> pan mostly if not all to mid -> limit the frequency spectrum to where the vocal needs to sit. -> done what do you think?

    • @WeissAdvice
      @WeissAdvice  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would say, try to address things from the perspective of dynamics more than frequency - see where a transient designer or layering drums gets you. And then decide which one you feel sounds better with an open mind. For me, making vocals fit in a beat is more about dynamics and I find I get better results with that approach.

      And how would you set your attack and release times? Gotta break that down for the ones who don’t know the parameters of trackspacer. I use the plugin daily btw 💎
