It's remarkable that this channel doesn't have more subs. Perhaps it's because you don't do the click bait non-sense and titles eluding to giving the holy grail or the best kept "secret" mixing tip. When I look for tutorials, THIS is the kind of thing I'm looking for. I've watched all sorts over the years and Weiss and Sean Divine are my go to channels. Real time, practical lessons without all of the bullshit mixed in. Brilliant as usual Matthew.
Smile curves may not be for you. I was talking to Chris Athens a few years back, who masters a lot of my mixes, and I had noticed he was adding a fair amount of 400Hz. I mentioned it to him and he pointed out that a lot of engineers, myself included, had started baking a smile curve into the mix itself. That kind clicked on a little lightbulb.
After watching a lot of videos online this has been the most helpful one.....the approach is what i can practice everyday and the advice 🔥🔥 the choice of song for tutorials
Excellent video as always Matt! I've learned a ton from you over the years. One of my faves if not THE fave due to your concise, get to the point attitude but without the snarkiness of others. Keep it up!
You've done it again sir. I use a similar technique using Vitamin when mastering. I love this approach because it forces you to listen critically and tailor the treatment to the record. Great video brotha.
Yes - Auratones give you the absolute minimum, but in a clean way. Very useful for making sure the important parts of a record are working. I'll try to pull in a few more Afrobeat examples.
I'd be happy to show my mix... I'd kinda prefer the song to actually come out first though (sigh). Was supposed to have gone to press a while ago, but, guess not.
great video as usual!! the music choices for all the videos is always so good, it really sets this channel apart from the vast majority of youtube tutorials. i'm curious about what systems you check your mixes on, are you using multiple pairs of monitors or do you stick to one for the whole process?
@@WeissAdvice he’s the founder of Weiss Engineering they make the DS1-MK3 mastering compresor etc Lol my bad it’s just that’s the only other Weiss in audio that I’ve heard of Anyway I’m subscribing love this channel 🤙
hi Weiss, nice tutorial as usual just want to know how did you refrain yourself to not to duck 320hz bcos i would do that and make track lifeless with such many ducks 😂😂.. please advise how not to do over killing
I generally find regular shmegular ol' EQ tends to sound best to my ear, most of the time. So I'll use standard EQ first, and if I find it takes away too much then I'll try dynamic.
@@WeissAdvice I think he meant that in the video you mention there’s an issue at 320, but then you didn’t go back to it. The question is if this was a matter of restraint?
of course! I did a mix that already came out. The album got pulled, but this is staying - so this is actually the new mix version, which will be out in a few weeks. But the original mix is still floating around the internet somewhere and I did that as well.
I learn a lot more from your "concept" videos than other channel's "trick" videos. You explain things very well. Thank you!
Thanks John!

Thanks Common Sense. Yeah... sometimes I try to do something clickbaity.... but just isn't me. I always appreciate that "Share" button!
Thanks MW ! Watched it again and keep learning. Cheers !
Thanks TH-cam algorithm not seen Matt in a while. Thanks for this Mathew. - SUBBED
AirEQ is so underrated. Good stuff, as always!
Very much.
Loved this one man! 👏🏾💪🏾
I've been lucky enough to see you do this in that one studio in NOHO. Love how much you give to the creative community! Thanks for all you do man!
The good ol' days :) . Thanks Caasi!
One of the better mixing channels here on YT my guy. Keep dropping these gems
Thanks Modezart!
I struggle with tonal control, but I heard every change you made to that track. All legit, thanks.
Right on. Thanks Kwash!
Another great video! These videos you put out give much better perception than the "one trick fits all" videos all over youtube.
I agree, thank you Rage!
Thanks. I struggle with low mids and low, usually making the mix too thin. This will help me taking a methodical approach rather than trial and error.

Great video as always. I always leave ur channel more learned in Audio mixing. God bless you. Nicely done✔ 👍

Instantly subscribed… Weiss is a great engineer

Right On. Hope you've been good!
Awesome video. & the song is amazing so this was very pleasant to watch.
I love the song. "Take Your Place" by Akon x Kizz Daniels. Should be re-released in a few weeks.
This was very helpful... please more Afrobeat mixing.... about monitors, do you feel there's any value in using auratone speakers for mixing?
Yes - Auratones give you the absolute minimum, but in a clean way. Very useful for making sure the important parts of a record are working. I'll try to pull in a few more Afrobeat examples.
thank you for this great insight. Can you do a tutorial on how you mixed the song. Thanks
I'll keep it in mind as I'm putting together content.
Thank you... I would enjoy watching how you mixed this song.
I'd be happy to show my mix... I'd kinda prefer the song to actually come out first though (sigh). Was supposed to have gone to press a while ago, but, guess not.
@@WeissAdvice Awesome, I'll hold my breath till then.
great advice Matt, I use to do the same technique but in a mid side way with the V3 from brainworx
Soloing sides can be SUPER useful.
Another great video... thank you.
Thanks for checking it out Januard!
super helpful, thank you for sharing
Thanks Jon!
thank you ... I enjoyed this

Thanks Josh! I mainly work on PMC tb2s+ monitors with a bryston 4bsst amp, and I'll reference on Slate VSX headphones.
@@WeissAdvice thanks for sharing!!

peut être qu'avec un dyneq pour le mid ?
peut être. dépend de votre oreille, mais je suis prudent.
What does he mean by it ‘starting to pinch’?
Pinch your nose. Hear the congested nasally quality. It's means there is a touch of that sound in the mix.
Quand vous dites que vous êtes prudent , c'est qu'un dynEQ peut casser votre balance dans d'autre partie de la chanson alors qu'un statique est ....statique?

Dynamic EQ just generally creates more audible artifacts. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
you mixed this song???

When u turn the volume up there's no actual volume difference
Wut? Only 4k subs on your channel?
Working on it! Thanks AmaZeus. Don't be shy with that "Share" button!
@@WeissAdvice I do follow you since a long time (online) ..sharing stuff from time to time, you have some of the best tips!
your percussion is a bit loud, too bumpy ounding.
definitely not. This is Afrobeat, not Rock.
I'd lower your drums, raise your guitars and then go on to eq.
And then I'd get a revision note saying "please lower the guitar and raise the drums."
Thanks. I struggle with low mids and low, usually making the mix too thin. This will help me taking a methodical approach rather than trial and error.
Low mids are always and will always be the big challenge. Never changes.
