Could be based on the amount of deaths. Warping out and back in just unlocks it and updates the lending limit each time you warp out of the area. Could be proven by getting to OD without dying once and seeing if this trick of yours works still. Thanks for uploading though. Good vid.
Are you on NG+??? Once you find him, just warp to 2 different areas and back, then his limit increases, I did it again recently actually It seems to stick to 2 though on NG+ strangely

Tried this trick after my first run of the entire game and it doesn't work anymore to three lending limit wether its on any difficulty mode.
I think it only works on NG, think NG+ is 2 max for some reason, guess u can unlock every book in NG anyway
