Thanks very much for the comment. We are so happy you enjoyed the video! 😁🇱🇻👍 another video coming this Friday in the kgb museum in Riga. I hope it helps too. 😁
Great video! Thank God the only thing is left from the Victory Memorial is just ruins, but you really managed to visit it at the best weather possible to get the gloomy feeling 👍🏼
The woman on top of the freedom monument is holding up three golden stars, which represent Latvia's historical regions of Kurzeme, Vidzeme, and Latgale.
Thank You for visiting our capital. Just few points, I what to make. Latvians love, when foreigners try to speak some Latvian. But Your pronunciation was bad. 😅 In Latvian "c" is "c", not "k". So the "Vecrīga" means Old + Riga. The three stars above Freedom monument represents three parts of Latvia, that united and formed free Latvia. They are Courland (including historic regions of Semigallia and Selonia), Vidzeme (literal translation "middle land", but not geographicaly. They once was western part of Latgale and near coast was Livonian lands. In later centuries region formed as distinct cultural region. And third, and not the least, part that formed Latvia - the Latgale, part of ancient and modern Latgale region. From here actually modern Latvia started by the Congress of Rezekne of 1917. Actually You visited really contraversial are, where not many tourists are going - Victory park. Before the WW2, the whole area was planned to be rebuild, with many massive cultural and sports buildings and park in it's center, to celebrate Latvia's victory and gained freedom. That's where the name for park comes from. It's not celebrating anything soviet, it's actually illegal to do so in Latvia. And that "monument" actually soviet occupation object, was build around 80ties, as part of Soviet information warfare against conquered lands and peoples. Soviets didn't liberate Rīga, they conquered it for 5 decades, and certainly they didn't defeat Nazi army alone. We do not celebrate and glorify Red army and Soviet regime, it's so wrong from many points and also illegal action. That's why this, as did many such objects, are dismantled by now. Now National Library building, weird looking building You visited, also stands in territory, wich once where intended for Victory Park. Other name for building is "Castle of light", name with deep historic and mythological meaning for Latvians.
And would also be nice if the government would tear down some of the modern soviet buildings where they don't belong and restore what was once there. The area around the blackhead house has suffered a lot, the black occupation museum does not belong there and should be taken down and the historical buildings should be restored. On the other side as well where those modern ones now stand. Rigas doms and the far left side is nice though and have been well restored and preserved. Just one such example, there are many more
