Have you ever stopped to wonder why Link, our lovable protagonist of The Legend of Zelda, doesn't ever speak? Well, beyond making the character easier for players to project themselves onto Link, there's actually an in-universe reason that we discover in the Creating a Champion book for Breath of the Wild! Let's explore that reason.
What was your favorite part of The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild? Let me know!

he does have some pretty wild dialogue options when talking to npcs, and another bit of insight which we find from Zelda's diary is that link is a bit of a glutton, scarfing down any meal infront of him
this is why he gets so excited when making a good meal in game
Would be very strange if he wasn't always hungry considering he's constantly fighting and climbing shit
Well who wouldn’t be excited when they’ve got a good meal right in front of them?
Sealously?
In darucks journal it says he gave link a rock roast and he said he actually liked it weather he is serious or being nice isn't really mentioned tho
This also coincides with age of calamity.
The legend of Zelda/Dynasty Warriors crossover Prequel,
There is a moment in which he is given a rock roast. (the Goron‘s food.) and he chows down on that thing.
The thing looks like rock in the shape of a pot roast, and he chews on that thing like it’s nothing.
I'll tell you the real reason why link doesn't talk. It's because the last time they gave him a voice he almost destroyed the industry. WeLl ExCuSe Me PrInCeSs

And then he built torture devices for Koroks. It's always the quiet ones...
Link is a honest, serious man committed to his duties, meanwhile link build the most cruel and sadistic thing Hyrule have ever seen
I read in an official art book that said that they didn't make him talk due to them wanting link to represent you which is why they let you name him in older zelda games. But now they just state link for his name. But yeah idea was he is a blank character designed to be you on a journey to save a princess
The way everyone lost their minds over Chris Pratt voicing Mario shows that the world is not ready for a talking Link.
He’s like a British royal guard!
I rlly want them to end a game soon w link just saying one word and ending it on a cliffhanger. I want to hear jim speak in cutscenes
In reality, Miyamoto wanted Link to be the best stand in for the player and felt that the “Silent Protagonist” archetype was best suited for this. That is also why in all previous games, the player could rename link to whatever they wanted.
Now I want there to be a third for this series where he talks.
I believe it was mentioned that it was done so the players would feel more connected to the game, almost as if we are the ones speaking, not link
You can actually hear him say savac in the gourudo town
well excUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUse me, princess!!!
Alright you wanna take that angle?, defend Why in the story line? People respond as if you just told them what is happening in detail, as if he can speak.
The heroes plight Link goes through is bone chilling!

Link has a "diary" in botw. It's his quest log, but only in certain languages like Japanese or Russian you can actually see that he writes in first person. He explains his emotions in more detail there.
QuestWithAaron did a video on that if you're interested.
Whenever I play, I read the quests in first person to myself 😅

Urbosa explained that Zelda resented Link because he already had full access to his abilities and she had unsuccessfully tried to unlock hers her entire life. She was also supposed to hear the Master Sword talking like Link can. Every time she looked at him she was reminded of her failures.

Personally I always defined Link's stockiness/quietness as a blank slate to impress our own personalities onto. In his situations, how/what you feel is what Link's feeling. If you're a "vocal" gamer, then your talking is Link's talking. If that all makes sense.
I'm certain this is what it stems from, but I have a hunch players wanted an "in-universe" reason 🤔
ye I figured that it was for immersion, but lore is part of what makes a game fun and considering you've played as this character for hundreds of hours you just get curious
Link was actually chattier in Skyward Sword, even having the option to sass Impa before she and Zelda go through the Gate of Time. But I guess reincarnating so many times has made Link a bit weary.

Link does speak, in game. Every time the game gives us a dialogue option, Link is speaking through them. We may not hear his voice when he does so, but we also don’t hear the NPCs’ voices when chat with them outside of cutscenes
we do kinda though. they make noises but their still voices
It’s obviously telepathy.
They didn’t want to pay a voice actor.
True 😂
Excuse me princess 🤣
Well they still got a guy in there to record all 200+ (and that is not an exaggeration) grunts and other trademark Link noises. I can’t imagine it would’ve been too much more expensive to hire some people to dub his voice in what few voiced cutscenes there were. I think it comes more from a place of fearing alienation from the audience than anything else. For as long as the mainline franchise has existed, Link was a silent protagonist, and changing that could’ve very well caused an uproar from people who either
a: didn’t like how the voice was cast in whatever dub
b: don’t like how his character was handled
or c: hate the change in general
he has a voice actor
@@angelandres1130 shut up
That Link never existed
Just like the Mario Bros. Movie
I think the developers decided to keep Link quiet to eternity in the games so every single person playing like him could feel identified. With no voice you can imagine yourself being the hero, by that way Link becomes universal.
Although he never speaks or expresses himself we can feel close to him and understand link's resolve
"I can't be cancelled if I don't have opinions"
😂
So basically Link is trying to avoid being cancelled by just never speaking.
I hope that however TOTK ends, Link finally gets to say something. If Link dies in a heroic sacrifice to save Hyrule, give him a badass one liner to cap his story.

I agree! I heard a theory once that the reason why Link could interact properly with NPCs in botw is only because he had forgotten the pressure of his duties…makes me wonder if we’ll hear him say a line or two in totk
I think the best way to do it is for him to just have one cool one liner as his only dialogue. You know, an exchange like

Second he's still very quiet

**cut to Link on two flying minecarts**
I love how silent link is in basically every Zelda game, never had a problem with it
"Well, excuuuuse me princess"
- Link
The real reason link doesn’t talk in any game is because the creators wanted the player to think of themselves as being the hero. That’s why up until breath of the wild you would name your own character, and the NPCs would actually say your name in dialogue.
that’s how it was at first, but now it’s just kind of tradition to have link stay silent. Despite being able to name link, the Links recently have all had their own distinct personalities.
It's not some internal conflict thing of him being "unable to express himself".
In fact, he says very clearly to Zelda that he thinks it's important that with how many eyes are on him, "someone silently carries every burden".
You can't have a hero who falters when everyone's hopes depend upon him standing strong against any and all danger.
This iteration of link and zelda are by far my favorite I’m gonna be so sad to see them go when these games are done 😢
