    They have vastly improved the rail trail though Moonville Tunnel. I was there in October 2021. Its a very nicely maintained multi-use trail now.

    Thinking about my first solo trip to do the south loop and add the tunnel in my trip. Thanks for the video it was great to relive this trail. The church starting point was up hill for like half a trail mile, loved it though!

      Thanks for joining along! This would be a great solo trip. There's always an added element to the adventure when you add a little side trip. Be safe out there and enjoy. Thanks for checking out the video!

    I watched u go down the railroad and didn’t expect u to find the tunnel because my dad, brother, and I went the same path about 4 years ago and had a rice blocking the way and thought you would too. We came back the following year and bushwhacked through a mile of forest on cliffs and caves from about a mile back on the main trail we head off the trail to the tunnel that one point we where on the tunnel and had to head down but we saw views that very little have seen and even saw a snake but you should also visit the other nearby kings hollow tunnel which I prefer

      Great story, thanks for sharing! It's pretty gnarly back in that section of the woods. I'm gonna have to go check out that other tunnel, I appreciate the suggestion!

      @@willpopemusic thank you for posting it. A map only shows so much. So having your video gives me an idea of what to expect. We are gonna try for a 2 day trip. Get there by 10-11 and hike about 7 miles the first day.

      You're in for a treat then! Yeah, it's hard to tell if it's a trail or a mountain bike path or a road or what.. no signs either. I think that's why you and I both kind of naturally passed it up. That is one cool tunnel though, of course it's much more grand in person than in the TH-cam video. Enjoy it and thanks for checking out the video!

      @@willpopemusic One thing I thought I'd point out that no one seems to notice: At point 51:56 in your video you come across what I call the Frog and Crocodile rocks. I shot a pretty poor video of it a few years back that gives you the right view. Just takes a little imagination. th-cam.com/video/9DivtnyF4sA/w-d-xo.html

    Does anyone know if the Moonville rail trail connects to the backpack trail connector? Was hoping for a short cut from Lake Hope campground

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As far as I can tell from the maps, the Lake Hope campground is in a very different area from the Moonville Tunnel. You could definitely hike from one to the other, but it wouldn't be a shortcut. You would probably want to hop on the south loop at the trailhead where I started in the video (near Hope furnace). It would be a huge day trip, probably 12-15 miles to get there and back - maybe more. You can definitely drive right up to it for a cool afternoon trip if you have a car. Maybe you could drive two cars to the tunnel parking lot, then hop in the one car and drive back to hope furnace. That way you only need to hike to the tunnel, then drive back! Good luck in your planning, take lots of water!

    I think we are going to attempt to find the Moonville tunnel from Camp 2 this upcoming weekend. Definitely took some notes, thanks for leading the way. Any idea on the distance between Camp 2 and the tunnel?

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! Hope you have fun, and just remember to keep pushing through the brush. It may not look like much of a trail at head height, but you can see the path if you look closely at the ground. I would say, traveling clockwise from camp 2, it's approx 1.5 miles to the side trail cut off, then another 1.5 miles on the side trail to reach the tunnel (but feels longer bc it's slower going through the thick stuff). Have fun!! From camp 2, to the tunnel, then back to camp 2 would probably be like 6 miles.
