Nice trip video bud! Site 3 is my favorite as well but site 1 has my favorite memories. Site 1 is where I took my at the time 5 year old daughter on her first backpacking trip. Thanks as always for sharing!
I’m sure those are some great memories with your daughter! Last time I went I stayed at site three and I was the only one, definitely best to go on a weekday if possible, I should’ve known better lol!
Thanks Andrew! Funny story, I was actually thinking about you the other day because I’m in the process of designing an Adventure logo and was considering putting a tag line with it... all my friends at home call me Miller for some reason and I thought about making it “Miller on the move” ha ha, too similar to yours 😆
Thanks for the sub...hope you running journey is good one! I began as a backpacker that progressed to fastpacking that progressed to ultra running, its been fun!
@@hangswithraccoons yeah, it’s basically just backpacking with a super light kit, but walking really fast and jogging on some of the flats and the downhills kinda like what an unsupported FKT would be. If you’re not familiar with FKT, it stands for fastest known time, basically a speed record on a trail and I’ve been doing them for about four years… super fun and very challenging!
Thank you! I love checking out campsites when I go backpacking, pretty much my favorite thing to do, so when I can’t find what I’m looking for online I try to be sure and film some of them when I’m out there.
It was great meeting you and Michael out on the trail, Jason! Nice to see the backpack trail from your angle. Hope you can make it down to the Shawnee Forest and do a video about that one!
Hey thanks Michael, it was great meeting you too! I really enjoyed checking out your website yesterday and reading about all the races that you have coming up. I have done a backpacking video on Shawnee backpack loop already about three years ago... I was still kind of new at the TH-cam thing at that time and one of my cameras quit working but it still turned out OK. Those hills were the reason I started using trekking poles haha! I do plan to go back and do the trail as a long day hike or an overnight.
The SEOTR Looks like a really great organization and I’m sure every race they put on is very well done. Hopefully I’ll get a chance to race in one someday. Thanks!
Looks like you got a good pre-LBL workout on this trip, Jason! That plantation area looked really pretty. This makes me want to come visit Zaleski sometime! Looking forward to our upcoming trip next month!
Don't you ever have any fears about the big black panthers that roam the woods. The game wardens claim they are not real but they need to tell that to the one I came face to face with on a game trail about 4:00 pm one day while hiking alone. I know it thought about making an attack but I being very tall must have discouraged it. However, if it had attacked I was unarmed and helpless. I was shocking to say the least. Oh one more thing they have round ears not pointed like a house cat.
I've hiked alone seven straight nights in a row in the deep dark forest of Daniel Boone National Forest in Kentucky, Big South Fork in Tennessee, and even through the mountains of North Central Pennsyvania and have never given it a second thought. Ohio would be the least of my worries of just about any place in America.
I've run the half marathon and 4.5 mile Iron furnace races there that Michael puts on. The North trail is the only part I haven't been on. I was going to post about doing an adventure on the Moonville rail trail ( since you have to bushwack about 7 river crossings) and was surprised to see that ODNR took over the trail and built bridges!! I didn't even know it. I was proven wrong as I never thought that kind of money would be available in that area. I'll have to take a trip down there this summer.
I have never been to the Moonville trail /tunnel and I really wanted to do it but we just didn’t have enough time...will definitely check it out next time though. Great area for a race!
The new rail trail is awesome. I actually bushwacked and did the river crossings about 5 years ago - that was an adventure, but the completion of the trail with the bridges was a great addition to the area. The funding came from grants that were to close up old mine entrances in the area, and to access those locations they needed bridges and a road to drive in on. So it was cool that they were able to combine that project with a lasting improvement. The Moonville Rail Trail is owned and managed by the township and not ODNR, from my understanding, even though it was an ODNR project.
Awesome videos! I started watching your channel for the river running/camping content and stayed for the rest. I was out where you started your trip just a few weeks ago. We started at the Hope Iron Furnace and hiked around Lake Hope.
Another awesome video you got yourself into Pun aside Sometimes it's always best to go a little extra if time allows it and hunt down a site that's not so crowded
I’m always scouting campsites when I’m out as well. Always judging for flatness and/or it could handle multiple tents. Pretty cool to see I’m not the only one lol
That is my absolute favorite thing to do while backpacking! I always look so forward to checking out every campsite I pass by and often end up filming too much while there haha 😆
Wow this hike was almost a social event!! Got to meet a bunch of people AND get a great hike in! Might be too long to answer here but why does a hammock tarp not work good as a camping tarp? Shape? Guy out locations?
It was a nice little getaway, just wish the weather would’ve been a little warmer and calmer, and I’ve learned my lesson about going to places like that on the weekends! I pulled that tarp all the way to the ground when the wind started picking up and closed the doors on the ends and I still got wind gusting on me from up underneath it. When you close the doors since you’re not hanging up in the air on a hammock your head and feet almost touch the edge of the doors so if it would’ve poured on me I probably would’ve gotten wet. I Just think there’s much better tarps out there that are designed for sleeping under unlike this one which is designed only for hammocks. On a calm dry day it still works OK.
Awsome. Where do you purchase your fuel? That tent is cool do they still sell the camo version? Gathered my gear going to pick a place and go. I'm in the Canton area of Ohio. Have any suggestions? Have you ever camped on the Erie tow path? Thanks for the views Jason.
Thanks! You ca pick up those fuel canisters at most outdoor retailers like rei, Walmart even has them but usually only the larger ones. I assume Zpacks still makes the camouflage version of the Duplex but they might be hard to get right now. I would suggest Mohican State Park, not too far from Canton. I don’t know much about the Erie Towpath.
When you need something quick and last minute you run to Wallmart! No condinsation when on ridge tops or when there is a breeze all night, but down in a low area or next to water or on a very calm night there usually is some condinsation but I just carry a small piece of shami cloth with me to wipe it up before packing tent up...so worth the condinsation risk for having a 19 ounce tent that is very roomy!
I don’t know…you might just turn me into a hiker/backpacker yet Jason! I enjoyed it even more than I thought I would. I won’t give up trail running just yet…but when I need to slow down…
Nice hike and run! Zaleski brings back lots of early packing memories with my daughters. Hoping I can get back down there next fall ... during the week so I can miss all the people!! Thanks for sharing.
And your duplex would have been just fine for tarp camping you kept it up too tall to high up it shouldn't a lot lower especially the back end that way it would have been easier to set the doors up and I complete tent type real deal but keeping your front sorry high as you can get in and out easier

Another great video Jason. Always nice in the woods in the spring. Looking forward to next one.
Thanks Joel, glad it wasn’t too muddy, which can often be the case in spring.
What a content, what a magnificent work!!! Hats off! Amazing video, so much effort has been put into this video that it is easy to see in every frame.
Thanks for kind words!
Great video. Was nice to see Michael Owens. He is just the best race director. The Shawnee 50 is just a great race. Have fun. Be safe.

Great video. Michael Owen is a great race director and has done many things for the trail systems. Great video!
That is what I hear...it was really cool meeting him out on the trail and talking about FKT's! Glad you enjoyed the vid!

Yeah it’s not too fun trying to film a video with 20 people right around you camping on a dead calm and quiet evening 🤪
Looks like a nice trip jason!
Thanks Ben! Love my food bag!
Nice time at Zaleski.
Short and sweet, definitely worth another visit when I have more time and during a weekday next time!
I need to make it down to Zaleski this year. I keep putting it off because of the drive.
Yes you do! Always heading to Northern Michigan or the Smokies but you always miss out on some fine Ohio backpacking 😉
For your stove canisters it's best to keep it at a medium settings you can conserve your fuel much much more efficiently
Yep, that’s what I always do, sometimes even a little too low. That canister just made it through it’s final boil.

Well I didn’t film my tarp adjustment, I ended up lowering it all the way down and closed the doors and the wind still tore me up all night 😫.
