Serhii Plokhy is sitting in a closed position - he's lying, it's noticeable. Only those who do not know about the military-industrial complex of the USSR may be mistaken about Sweden and Finland. The Union has always perceived these countries as hostile in case of conflict. And Ukraine is a strategic territory, which is given an important role in the shield of the Russian Federation. Crimea has always been an autonomy and was not part of Ukraine, precisely because of its strategic importance to the USSR. Lex, don't blink, pls.

Imagine China making a military alliance with Mexico and Cuba.
The US would not invade mexico or cuba. There would be very loud complaining.
We know America’s behavior after the Soviet Union made a military alliance with Cuba. We did not like it, but we did not invade.
Our close neighbors like us. I travel to Mexico and Canada often. There’s always a lot of shit talk, but at the end of the day, they love having the security and economic opportunities next to the most powerful nation in history.
The problem with the Soviet union, and Russia, is that they are horrible neighbors. Their neighbors are former subjects of the Soviet union. They know what it’s like to live under those regimes. It is horrible.

People don't know that both the Soviet Union and Russia applied for NATO membership and were denied. I mean, if it isn't an anti - Soviet or anti - Russia alliance, why were they not allowed to join.

@@jasoncolleran2178 Human beings, people, build all their realtions on the benefit of the doubt. USA actually invaded the Soviet Union in 1918, which you would know if you ever read any history. In 1918, a coalition of American, European and White Russian forces invaded the Ukrainian SSR but were defeated by the Red Army. So if anyone ought to have the position of paranoia of being destroyed it's the USSR. But they didn't. USSR never abandoned the ideo of a possibility of friendship with USA. Just go Google and read Khruschev and Kennedy's correspondances.

Why can't the US just have Ukraine's back when it comes to being invaded without having them join a globalist organization and sign a contract that requires a certain amount of money being funneled from that country into US defense contractors? Why do they choose the path that makes them money? Because they want money. Its a conflict of interest and will lead to unlimited NATO expansion and eventually Russia will have NATO missiles around their entire border. Of course it was about nato. If Ukraine and the West had agreed on neutrality the war never would have occurred. The parallel is to neutral Austria in 1955 at which point the Red Army moved out of Austria and never returned and that was the end of it. And Austria has been neutral and never part of Nato.

@@aaronataman892 the point is, the US would flip if China or Russia did that. In which they did back in the 60s regarding the Cuban Missile Crisis, which is in retaliation to the US placing missiles in Turkey prior to that, right outside of USSR.
Yet the US is supporting Israel legit fighting a population that is 50% under 18 years old. I'm American, but at least I can admit who the real perpetrator is. Of course USA is not going to paint itself as the bad guy, and we should take it as a given that we will demonize anyone we are against, which we have for centuries. Russian invasion was in 2014, after his puppet in Ukraine was removed by the people
2014 - in response to the Russian puppet leader of Ukraine being deposed. Russia saw themselves losing a pseudo-puppet state after the Maidan revolution and took Crimea, and started operations in the Donbass.

Russia is the only who tries to rewrite history. They invaded so many countries in Europe that entire eastern Europe needed to join NATO just for their safety. Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia needs to became NATO member to stop any war and genocide which Russia is going to cause in the future.

Yes in 2008 there was no chance of Ukraine joining NATO, Crimea was also under Ukrainian sovereignty and Russia had not been invaded. At the 11 minute mark they are taking about 2022 a full 14 years later, the security environment had drastically changed. What Russia wanted was massive restrictions on Ukraine's military, wanted a full severing of at the very least military and security relations with the West and pretty much wanted Ukraine to be militarily isolated for when Russia rearmed and decided to invade again. Look at Chechnya, Russia had a deal that ended the first Chechen War but when Russia was rearmed and ready invaded under questionable pretenses.
A few years ago I respected Harvard as an institution. Since then I met someone who graduated from Harvard Business school, he is an amazing liar, it is impressive how he sells himself. This video reinforces my view that Harvard teaches its students how to lie and get away with it.
Serhii grew up in Ukraine and his parents are Ukrainian. So you can expect a pro-Ukraine twist.

EG. When he says the negotiations with NATO pre invasion were intentionally unrealistic by Putin and his conclusion is it's because Putin never really wanted to negotiate that is his subjective opinion. NATO refused Putins demands and said it's Ukraines right as a sovereign nation and a right to self determinism to join NATO so they won't block them from joining. Also it's a well known fact that when you negotiate you ask for more than you want - this is called anchoring... the logic is if you start higher then you will negotiated down to a point that you would be satisfied.

With all due respect but heroism doesn't count in modern warfare. What many people didn't realize is how well prepared the Ukrainian army already was at the beginning of the war. Since 2017 they were heavily armed and trained by Nato, and had mobilized more soldiers than Russia.
Even Henry Kissinger commented at some point that neutrality is not realistic anymore because Ukraine is already too much entangeled with Nato.
I agree with John Mearsheimer that Putin had to invade because it was the last chance to keep control over crimea before Ukraine would join Nato.
the flaw with that is why does Russia need Crimea in the first place? What does that solve realistically? It's evident by the supply shortages that nato has trying to barely arm ukraine that their was no plan to pounce on russia at all. The idea that hundreds of thousands of people need to be killed millions displaced for one of the wealthiest nations on the planet to "feel more secure" is a assessment one could only make if their eyes were sewn shut by their own world view.
Russia invaded Crimea in 2014. Ukraine definitely wasn't ready for it then, and their engagement with NATO only really expanded in the subsequent years while fighting the Russian army in Donetsk and Luhansk.
Of course Ukraine engaged with NATO. They were at war with Russia.
As for Russia "having to invade Crimea" it supposes they're entitled to it. I think you'll find the UN charter to which the Russian federation signed up, as well as the Bucharest agreement of the 90's (giving up Ukraine's nuclear weapons in exchange for territorial guarantees on the 1991 recognised borders that included Crimea) suggest that this was nothing more than a cold invasion.

Very few western weapons were in ukraine even 1year into the invasion. E.g. germans sent a few thousand helmets etc etc. educate yourself a bit pls. What stopped rus invasion initially was the Ukrainian willingness to fight the horde.

Russia also warned Finland to join NATO, so we refrained from joining. Now that they attacked Ukraine and are busy there we joined. I wonder what would have happened if Finland would have announced that it is going to join during peacetime.

As a Russian, I think it's likely Russia would have attacked. Because strategically, to Russia, Finland is a usefull partner, and NATO's an enemy. If your partner openly states he wants to join your enemy, it's at least rational to consider a preemptive strike.

Sure someone disagrees with you, they must be a bot? This guy is very selective with his history. Anyone with a brain knows you cant take over Ukraine with an active 350k military at the time with just 90k Russian troops.
Those who decided to invite Ukraine into NATO knew full well that the Russians would perceive this as a hostile and threatening act. Quite logically, they decided to look elsewhere for allies. And China also needs someone with whom it can cooperate militarily. So the West got what it apparently wanted. The world's second and third militarily strongest nations now stand together as adversaries of the West. This has worked.
Plokhy is not telling the truth that Ukraine's membership has been postponed ad acta. The claim that Ukraine will become a NATO member has been repeated 3 times in total. In 2008, 2021 and 2023. This would make no sense if it wasn't meant seriously. After all, bluffing would be extremely immoral towards Ukraine.
And yet the result of this war is that two seperate more powerful, better equipped and wealthier nations have just be accepted. The outcome according to your logic is disastrous for the publicly stated goals of the Kremlin, and yet still they persist and attempt to conquer without seemingly any regard to ACTUAL NATO escalation. It doesn't add up at all. If the US wanted this war and secretly planned this all Ukraine would have been armed to the teeth from the beginning. Instead the first thing NATO offered to Ukraine was a chance to flee 😂. That along with sluggish deliveries of quantatively viable supplies of heavy weapons prove that the west was NOT seeking this out and is instead reacting to a very out of control situation with comparatively idle hands. The guy literally claims that Putin was afraid not that the West would make Ukraine its vassal state, but that Ukraine would become a vassal state of the West. Although it is obvious that these two different actions have the same consequence: Ukraine is a member of the EU and NATO, and it is the consequences that are the subject of concern.
Ukraine is currently a member of neither. They wanted to join the EU, but Putin bribed their ex-leader and then invaded them, in order to stop them.

he made logical statements - for example - if reason to attack was expansion of NATO, the border will widen twice if Findland and Sweden join. So they should switch attack from Ukraine to Sweden year ago, cause Ukraine will not be in NATO soon, but Sweden almost there.

@@batmanyk The situation in Ukraine is supremely different than the very neutral finland and sweden. I bet Russia wont mind as much as they do Ukraine because:
1. ukraine has a corrupt governement with nationalist people
2. there was a civil war in Ukraine between ethnic russians and pro western ukranians
3. there was a US backed coup in ukraine which made everything there worse
4. russia has been invaded thorugh ukraine in the past
There are more reasons, its just common sense that an ever expanding military organization like NATO would inevitably lead to war. Why even have such an organization if the end result is clearly war?

Russia and Finland do have a border but the truth is Russia don't care about Finland or see Finland as a threat, Finland is a very small population and they're neutral, their leadership has always been like Switzerland and Austria etc. Because they don't really act controversially or get sucked in by Western politics. Where as Zelenskyii, he got sucked in. Almost every invasion of Russia from Europe has came through Ukraine or Belarus... if anyone was going to draw up a plan to launch a ground invasion on Russia he best way to start would be though the north of Ukraine. There's a reason why George Bush and the US have pushed for Ukraine and Georgia to join NATO - not Finland. That's because these countries occupy key areas in terms of containment policy for Russia.

Well eventhough that was interesting, I still agree with Mearsheimer that the main cause was NATO expansion. It's simple power politics and makes sense. It doesn't really matter what Putins puts the most emphasis on when speaking publicly like in the Tucker Carlson Interview. The underlying force are security interests.
I would like to challenge you on that from two directions:
1. NATO expansion is in itself a false premise. NATO does not expand onto countries, countries bid for membership and after meeting technical criteria, are subject to political approval by all member states. Thus, it is not a case that NATO is intruding into the russian sphere of influence, it is the case that Ukraine, as a sovereign state has the right to allign with NATO if it chooses to do so and it is the right of other NATO members to accept or reject Ukraine (and they have been rejecting Ukraine so far) and Russia doesn't have the right to do a goddamn thing about it.
2. Putin's security interests are upheld by mutually assured destruction. There is absolutely no chance that either party would trigger a direct conflict. NATO as an alliance is a defencive alliance and so far hasn't invaded anyone as a collective (Iraq and Afghanistan wasn't a NATO invasion, despite member states were involved) and it is not reasonable to believe or assume in any way that they would invade the largest nuclear power in the world. It is only the case that Russia upheld the position that they have a right to a sphere of influence (to which they don't) and that Ukraine was forcefully being dragged away from its sphere of influence by the west (which it wasn't).
Example - the collective west is not denying Belarussian alliance to Russia. Russia should not deny Ukraine to allign itself with the west if they choose to do so.

We all know who controls NATO (the collective west headed by the US with its 750 military bases in around 80 countries). I believe that we also know that if NATO controls black sea it is a huge disadvantage for Russia (i.e. Russia will be less capable of defending itself, if it needs to). This works well for the US/NATO who are pressuring Russia on many different directions by all means possible. Russia offered to join NATO, NATO refused. The thing about historians they always attach their own spin on things to one degree or another. Theres 10 who disagree with this guys entire take for every 10 who agree, and theres 10 more who have a differing view. My own meager reseach into the history of ukraine disagrees with numerous statements this guy has made. Ive used books dating back to the early start of our country and were used in classrooms to teach students in the US. Many date back well before WW1 and were the standard for teaching wold history at the time.

The whole study of history is taking little bits of knowledge and interpreting them. That is literally all historians do.
In regards to Finland, it doesn’t impose as much of a threat to invasion due to the incredibly rough terrain and weather. Very poor attack vectors. On the other hand, Ukraine is right on the Eurasian steppe. Lots of room to maneuver. With Finland and soon Sweden joining NATO they would definitely have control over the Baltic Sea.

Ukraine were NATO Neutral before the Annexation of Crimea. i think thats very important point that gets missed. NATO neutrality was abandoned after Russian attack in 2014. which makes sense
