    I'm a Aotearoa (New Zealand) Maori, a while ago we had a group of Hawaiian performers visit my tribe specifically because my ancestors were also there ancestors. it was pretty mind blowing hearing the stories and exchanging our stories with them. I truly want to visit these Islands one day just to stand where my great ancestors once stood before taking the long journey south to this land i call home Aotearoa, The Land of the Long White Cloud

    Pretty crazy but as I was watching this video this SUN a,m., a small earthquake passed underfoot...5-17-2015. The Ring of Fire is highly activated right now with 34 of the 40 volcanoes showing some activity, even long dormant ones. The mountains have spoken. Thank you Pua for this very powerful and moving video.

    I have lived my life under the gentle mountain. It is a reassuring presence. Whenever I see it, I am reminded of the phrase, "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono" and it gives me pause to reflect upon its meaning. Is it we that protect the land or is it the land that protects us? And who is "we" and what is the etheric nature behind the "land"?
    I am for the TMT. I have lived my life looking at things as objectively as possible. When presented with a decision of right or wrong, I have always chosen what is right. It has recently come to my attention that perhaps I should look through different eyes and make decisions based on what is kind or unkind. Some of the decisions that I have regretted might have turned out differently, had I asked that question.
    In deciding the fate of the TMT, I have no doubt about what is right or wrong for it to proceed with construction. That being said, I respect the (opposing) groups' rights for peaceful civil disobedience. Indeed, I admire their veracity and principles. So, is there a kind solution to this problem? I hope so.
    And if, in the end, the decision is made to terminate the project... I'm not sure that I will take that as a defeat.
    If that is the only kind solution, then maybe it is the only solution.

    I didn't really get the point of this video. Obiously, it is against astronomy. Okay. But why? Is there a reglious rule, that nothing should be build on Mauna Kea? Or that astronomy research upsets the ancestors? When you don't really argue, you will miss your goal.

      eltfell Haha, perhaps read some literature on the cultural importance this location holds for Hawai'i before writing a comment as such. Does an argument need to justify Anglo-Saxon norms? I hear her argument, more I hear our responsibility! EO!

    • @eltfell
      @eltfell 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ryan Swanson It's not my duty to find out, what she really wants. It's her duty to communicate it. She doesn't say, if she is against astronomic research itself at this place, if she is only against the buildings on this mountain, of if she is against the presence of humans on the summit (like Kailash). And she doesn't really tell, what religious rules would be violated. All I hear is pseudo-profound stuff and singing (accompanied by a guitar, which is brought to Hawaii by Whites btw).
      Australian Natives make their point clear, that Uluru should not be climbed and why. I accept that very well. But this stuff isn't convincing at all.

      This is the old religion that Kamehameha II stopped or ended. There was a civil war in which the chief and his wife were killed and all his warriors who supported it. So it was band or Kapu.
      We Polynesia turn our ancestors to gods over time. Like Maui or Wakea. Maui was a navigator who discovered the islands and named Oahu after his daughter. Wakea is a descendant of Hagoth the great ship builder.
      I’ve read their genealogy it’s awesome🤙🏽

    • @kahiwahiwaokalanikiaaina3533
      @kahiwahiwaokalanikiaaina3533 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paueli Faumuina right on my braddah. Kaonohiokala was the religion of the early hawaiians, 12 century Hawaiians before the Tahitians came and we became what is now the Hawaiian race. Liholiho decided to end that one religion after a dinner with his mother Keōpūolani and Ka’ahumanu. He was asked by his father to reinstate the Kahu’s and temples but Liholiho refused and with his chief Kalanimōkū he defeated his fathers army at the battle of kuamo’o. I think. I think he had influence by missionaries to convert Hawaiians to one god and not allow them to believe in Kūkailimoku, Kane, Lono and Kanaloa. Liholiho’s story is pretty crazy tho but I’m glad to know other people are still interested in the history of Hawaii. Aloha

    I watched your video and have decided to go troll your facebook page. If your ancestors knew so much then we wouldn't have to build telescopes. I'll bet you rode in a car to the top to dance your hula, no? Fine, but don't complain like you don't benefit from modernity. I have been to this great place and was proud of the science that lives there. Culture and science DO live together (you made this video, right?). The 30m telescope is wonderful and should proceed without delay. Get over it. Cheers/John

      John what if someone comes to your territory and try take away your culture and you're forced to live in their culture? Imagine that and we are not just talking about religion, politics, or gender. We have so much relationships to the land we connected to our roots of our ancestors. Imagen if someone build something superfluous on top your home/land without permission.

      @johndaly846 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      RE: your hypothetical- If those people demonstrated that the premise of my religion and worldview were wrong, then I would get over it and try to learn something. That the telescopes are "superfluous" is too wrong to merit a response. Fortunately for science, the protest is a minority opinion and I look forward to seeing the TMT on my next visit!

    • @kpaukeaho6180
      @kpaukeaho6180 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You didn't listen. This isn't anti-modernity. This is pro-protection of a fragile ecosystem and place of great meaning for many people for whom this is their only home. This is anti-corruption, as there are many people skirting the rules in this deal who stand to make money. Technology can always progress, and new technologies eventually become obsolete. It is much harder to bring back a destroyed ecosystem and lost species. The "unintended consequences" from this kind of project are of the kind the people there may have to live with forever.
      What kind of progressive-minded science tramples underfoot the equally-scientific aims of conservation? What kind of ethic is this, where certain people have clearance to do hurtful things to others simply because they have been "enlightened" from caring?
      Moreover, there is a convincing argument to be made that Hawai`i is an occupied country, and from that perspective the crime of building this telescope becomes magnified tenfold. The entirety of Hawai`i itself is an ill-gotten place. No one ever asked permission for the rights to these lands. If you look at the chain of title to this mountain you'll more fully understand the protest.

    • @johndaly846
      @johndaly846 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Your point about species going extinct is a valid concern. Addressing it in planning phase isn't enough- it has to be monitored carefully through construction and into operations. It would be reckless to trample something that's irreplaceable, but we differ that the TMT does so.
      RE: Hawaii being occupied- so is mainland US, so is Canada, so is Scotland, so is Israel, so is China, so is Russia, and probably some part of every country on earth. That's old business and it's time to just grow up. I understand the history. Every single square inch of the US was annexed from natives by means unfair by today's diplomatic or even humanitarian standards. It was wrong, however nobody wants to go back.

      I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
      And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
      Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."

      @@druid3744 Nice rhyme bud, but the only thing is do you know where you go after life? we are dust and dust we shall return. Fear a man? In Isaiah 51: 12-13 I, even I, am he that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass.
      As I was saying take your Navy Seal man and shove it back into the hole that he needs to go in. A grave where all of them belongs.. The soul is no ones to own but the Creator Of Man and Woman. So take your poem writing self satan and go back into the whole that you were buried in...
      All Glory To God, Creator Of Heaven and Earth. God Of Israel, God of The Living
      Merciful, Loving and All Powerful God.
      All Hail God Of the World.

    We must work to save the aina. There has just been ENOUGH invading of the islands. When will the GREED stop?

    • @raymondjames5035
      @raymondjames5035 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The invasion started when the Tahitians (Alii) arrived (800ad) and took the islands from the earlier inhabitants, the Marquasians. By bringing the war god KU and chopping off heads, the Tahitians took control and divided the islands among their own kings and Alii royalty. They were every bit as bad as the European conquest of North America.

    I can see no logical reasons expressed in this video. The telescope will teach us a great deal. The idea of the "sacred" is common but not rational. This video is gibberish.

    the whole world is sacred, prepare yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose, be thankful its not a skyscraper or resort, you "natives" dont speak for the mountain and neither do I. If the mountain doesnt want it there it will tear it down itself, and if that happens it happens , get with the times, i appreciate though your cultural traditions but dont think it dictates over the future of the land and others. Last time i checked this land is part of the United States, and if you want your beliefs to be law then try and succeed from the U.S and form your own stable govt and good luck, if not then accept change, other peoples beliefs or non-beliefs just like all of us do.

    Hawaiian Kingdom Law (1839 Kauikeaouli Kamehameha III) is the ultimate highest level organized VERBAL Kapu Aloha (Maoli) and is the COMPLEMENT (the other Half) which advances the Hawaiian Kingdom sovereignty (Kapu Aloha) PHYSICAL ACTIONS to a deeper next stage. One cannot do without the other ... and... as it is decisive in times of "peace", so it is in times of war...(as was originally organized).
    LIKE (waving) THE FLAG, it clearly concludes that Hawaiian Kingdom is WHERE WE LIVE, but additionally identifies that we are not Hawaiians “living in America”. It also holds accountable any person who does harm, engages in lies, and dishonors their word.
    This Law (like the Hawaiian flag) is based in Biblical principles and is the official attribute establishing the Hawaiian kuleana (where all belief systems have sanctuary...especially and now appropriately the ancient Samoan / Tahitian polytheistic ones defining a-KU-a as the god of war leading them). It is a Law system in harmony with both nature and the ONE Creator (Ke Akua)/ monotheism...which apparently some protectors believe is not Verbally defending their personal sovereignty when physically attacked...and they end up verbally defending themselves with the “monothei$m” of Hawaiians “living in America". Hawaiian Kingdom natural-common Law is entirely appropriate however ..as it stands strong against the historic "Moneylenders", only needing the Ku (as in Ke AKUA) uncompromising attitude of standing in honor.
    While different protectors also believe both this law as well as the Hawaiian Flag to be too "Western" (which includes the “‘British’[read Egyptian] Hive" system)...in the end that IS how Hawaiian Kingdom was monumentally formulated (combination Polynesian Ali’i war culture / Mu Maoli Sacred Family peace culture): But unfortunately the price paid for being this "sovereign” combination was the secret assassinations of the Sacred Vine royalty (whereby even Kamehameha 3 had to fake his own death and live in exile) and the continued denigration /genocide of the Hawaiian Nationals/Kanaka Maoli to this day. In actuality, however ...this law and flag (specifically) enlightens and orientates the world on the origin of the Polynesians in history (vs. Mu/ Maoli history) dating back to the time of the "Lost Tribes of Jacob"...(i.e. "Union Jack" Jacob/ aka pharaoh Jakobur with his Red-White-Blue "dark" magic energy) ...expelled from Egypt for their Usury practices.
