Toothfairypicker Hi, I am planning to apply for dental hygiene in February but the previous comments about dental hygiene during pandemic got me worried. How are the dental hygiene field and dental coping with Covid19? Is it safe to work? Should I even consider getting in the dental hygiene program at this point?

Laura, your mom is the reason why I decided to go back to school for RDH ! (After completing a Bachelors in HR and not finding a job in the field ) I watched one of our videos where you mentioned your mom being a hygienist had no influence in your dental school journey and a light bulb just went off. That was in august of 2018 and after completing all my pre reqs I got accepted this March! So thank you Laura’s mom 😊😊
You have a very similar story to me! I also completed my HR degree and worked in it for 4 years, I hated the profession. Now I want to be an RDH and do something more technical and helping people! I think it will be more fulfilling! Good for you !
Walmarie Garcia Hey, I just read your post and I am kind of in a similar situation as you: I am planning to apply for a bachelors in hr but I am much more inclined towards dental hygiene. I guess it is pretty much clear what career I should choose :). If you don’t mind, what country do you live in, knowing that finding a job in hr is hard if I happen to consider it?
I love your mom's attitude! I also am a long time dental hygienist, 40 years now, and still loving it. I appreciate all the great advice she gives to both hygienists-to-be as well as the general public. Keep up your hard work! I agree it is so rewarding!
@@LauraSmiles Yes, I love my job, the people I work with, and most of all my patients! I have been in the perio office I work in for 35 of my 40 years and many of my patients for almost as long. It has been so gratifying to treat a patient who has come in a state of disease and to be a part of getting them healthy. Teaching is such a big part of what I do and as I always tell them when they state they have learned so much, I don't want to just help them get healthy, I want to give them the knowledge and tools to keep themselves healthy! They know I truly care about them and I believe that is one reason I have so many dedicated to me and to their oral health. We are still on "lock down" but are anticipating getting back in the next couple of weeks here in our area, and the front desk person called me yesterday to say I have "like 200 patients desperate to get in to see Rhonda"!! SO rewarding and exciting to me after all these years!!
OMG! i love your mom. I loved it when she said she is a "survivor" and she survived a genocide she can do anything she sets her mind on. I think I just binged watch your video tonight hahaha
Hi Laura, my family also survived the genocide of Khmer Rouge. I was about 7 years old when we immigrated to United States (Houston,Tx) in 1982. So I can relate what your mom went through(little bit). I admired that you and your mother chose the health profession as a career, we as a Cambodian community need more of that. I’m a pharmacist myself, and my son who is a freshman in college wants to be a dentist in the future. We find your videos very extremely helpful, keep doing what you doing. Thanks for your time and videos.
Hi Pou, thank you so much. I appreciate your support. Thank you for being a Khmer health professional - we need more! I'm sure your son will be a great dentist and I wish him the best on his journey to dental school. Happy Khmer New Year to you and your family!
I'm so glad this video came up! I've finished all my pre-requisites and have applied for my dental hygiene program! Just waiting for an acceptance letter but everything is delayed now... :( But that's okay! Your mom gave me hope, and made dental hygiene something that I am really looking forward to

Your mom is so sweet and positive! I did a Dental mission trip to Cambodia 2 summers ago and they truly have the kindest people I've ever met. You both radiate that quality. Wish you all the best! 🦷😷
Aww, watching this makes me wish I went to school for hygiene! I'm an orthodontic assistant & I love it, but man, scaling teeth is so satisfying 😅 Btw, Happy New Year to you & your family! 😊
Hello! Also first gen-Cambodian! My mother and grandmother came to San José, CA as refugees from the Khmer Rouge! My family is from Battambang! I’m currently an RDA finishing my pre-reqs for hygiene school! Love your videos!
BTW: Your mom had a lot of great things to say❤️❤️ I also took a back up patient! Agree with your mom in that it is pretty easy to find a job and I also subbed at offices to see if I shared the same philosophy. In CA RDH can administer LA. I work 2 short days and I love it!! I've only worked for amazing doctors as well🙏🏻 This was such a great video! Thanks for sharing❤️
You're both so cute. I'm working as CRDH for 2 years now. And I love my jobs, too. You're mom is absolutely right. I started my first jobs as temp. I tempted for almost a year until I found a suitable office for me.
I love your mom, can we share lol? I am in my second semester of my freshman year i want to become a dentist and get to your level some day! Although I want to be a dentist she has been an inspiration to me because of her story.
I'm an RDH too and this made me soooo happy. I can't wait to say I've been a Hygienist for 30yrs 🥺😍 I'm missing it so much right now and YESSS Hi Friedy posterior scaler is my favoriteeeeee instrument ever 🧡
Watching this video really helped me, this year I applied to the dental hygiene program & unfortunately they canceled it this year due to covid but I'm keeping my hopes up for next year!! :)
I am currently in school for dental hygiene and am projected to graduate in 2021 with a BS! The scariest thing for me right now is learning to administer anesthesia. Aahhh!!!
Loved that this video popped up in my suggestions! My parents also escaped the Khmer Rouge and I finished hygiene school last year. It's very cool to hear about your mom's experiences and I look forward to following you on your dentistry journey as well!
Love this. I did become a CDA, but I want to go further into DH. But I’m scared of failure, so its so uplifting you asked that question bc I thought I was the only one to feel that way.
Wooow so I’m kinda stuck in life right now and I had 4 options I was looking into for my career and dental hygienist was one of them I think this is a sign thank you for this !!!!! And your mom is soooo adorable ☺️☺️ loved this video very helpful for my life choices
Your mom’s info is extremely helpful! My dream career is dental hygienist 😃 maybe afterward, attending dentistry is my planning path! Could you share some tips about moving up to dentist from dental hygienist? It’s my pleasure ❤️
I love the energy that is coming off of this video! So encouraging and bright. I just subscribed. Looking forward for more videos with you two together
If u want clean teeths heres how to do it 1. buy many apples 2.cut where red is from a side u pick 3.brush ur teeth with the inside 4.after some days of doing this, your teeth should be clean Am i right?
Hi! I’m curious to know if all the negative things I’ve heard about dental hygiene are true. I’ve always heard not to purse a career in dental hygiene because they’re so easy to replace because there’s always new students willing to take your place for less pay. I’m currently debating on applying to the 2021 program because I have all my pre reqs and I’m very interested in the field! I’d really appreciate your point of view. Thank you in advance! 🙏🏽✨
@@giselletejeda165 Hi there! I've always felt that I have job security. Hygienist are always in high demand. As far as new grads taking less money I remember my very last semester the instructors would make sure to give us the going rate so we wouldn't take less. When I graduated I made sure I was getting paid the same as the RDH in my area. Yes, yes ,yes apply!
Wow you have been practicing for 21 years!! That's amazing. Right now I am thinking of pursuing the dental hygiene program and working full time when I graduate. But I keep hearing that being a dental hygienist will break down your body :( I'm so scared that my health will get ruined and that I will not be able to work for many many years. Is this true? Or does it depend on how you manage yourself? Also, do you suffer from any body problems because of your job??
@@huisukim2286 I think you should go for it! I also have two sisters that are RDH's. I only worked full time for 5 years and then went to 2 short days, so it's been great for me. My sister worked full time for over 30 years and then started cutting back. She works 3 days a week. My other sister worked full time for 10 years and now only works 3 days. In dental hygiene 4 days a week is full time. The money is good, so it's not a profession where you have to work so full time to make a good living. I do have lower back pain but thats due to previous car accidents lol I do think its how you manage yourself. Work in private practice where you see one patient per hour rather than a clinic where you might see a patient every 30 min. That makes a big difference.I hope that helps☺️
45 years as a dental hygienist and let me tell you ....it can take a serious toll on your body.. my advice to all students out there.. take breaks...don’t work full time and use the cavitron all you can. Limit hand scaling, it’s archaic...LOL! Finding the right office is crucial esp the boss DDS ...there are some real jerks out there focused only on production and feeling victimized by having to pay the hygienist high wages...assistants get benefits and hours while hygienists get cut when patients cancel etc... if I had a choice looking back I’m not so sure I would choose it again... hindsight is 20/20. All in all though I love working with my hands but not OVERWORKING my hands.. the best thing I like about hygiene is the self esteem I feel when I’m working ...serving people and contributing to their oral health is pretty rewarding too! Good luck on your journey....it’s not all a bowl of cherries by any means...🤨🤣
Woow those were some really good question. I have a question for you laura: what have you learned from your mum as she's working as a dental hygienist? What will you take with you to be a better doctor/ what would you like to change as a doctor towards hygienist and assistants? I worked as an assistants before and I do truly believe that you have to find the right office. I changed at least 3 offices and for a long time I felt that I kept failing because of they way I've been treated by my coworkers/doctors. Truth was, they weren't willing to teach me their ways. Those experiences definitely discouraged me to pursue dental hygienist. However, I do keep wonder if things were different if I had a "higher" education in the office (RDH). Any tips from your mum?
Thank you for watching! Definitely the most important takeaway from her as hygienist that I will keep in mind when I'm a dentist is to try to finish hygiene exams before starting a long procedure! She says that sometimes the dentists forget so it's nice if the assistant can help remind! Oh no! I'm sorry that you had bad experiences at your previous offices. Like my mom said, it's hard to find the right office. Especially when you're an assistant, it's difficult because each dentist has their own preferred way of doing things and they have to be willing to teach you otherwise you won't know! You can still pursue hygiene - it's never too late! One of my mom's friends actually just did a career change to dental hygiene and she's in her 40s! My mom's advice to you is to keep looking for the right office. Hopefully you have a working interview so you can work with the dentist before hiring and see if it's a match.
Oohhh!!! It's just pop up so i watched it haha. U both looks cute and sweet. U two have both nice, clean and white teeth which i love to watch also haha. good luck to both of u. Laura is so gorgeous crush.hihihi.

Loved that this video popped up in my suggestions! My parents also escaped the Khmer Rouge and I finished hygiene school last year. It's very cool to hear about your mom's experiences and I look forward to following you on your dentistry journey as well!

Yay! I'm a RDH 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I've been practicing for 21 years 🥰
That's amazing!!!
Great inspirational dental video!
Thank you!
Loved this, so cute! I'm a RDH of 30 yrs, spot on info!
Thank you for sharing the advice!
Best true advice yet! I hv a BS in DH & been practicing since 1997!
Aww u have her smile 😊
Haha I've been told! Thanks
I’m trying to get into a program now and then on to dental school!!!
I think being an assistant first is a good idea. It tells you if you enjoy dentistry in general. Some people aren't cut out for it.
Great advice! It's very different thinking you want to be in the field and then seeing it and doing it everyday!
Your mum’s so cute! Im 17 and doing a Bachelors degree in Oral Health (therapy and hygiene) ✨🧡
She appreciates the compliment!! Wow young with goals - love it!
You guys are awesome
