      Tatiana Giraldo Hey, so when applying to college what major do you choose if you want to be a dental hygienist! I’m in high school ( voc ) and I’m in the dental assisting program but I don’t know what to do as far as college majors.

  • @simplyshanna5021
    @simplyshanna5021 4 ปีที่แล้ว +782

    I think I chose this major is because I love how you work with yourself. Besides the dentist, you’re kind of your own boss. You work you schedule without people having to tell you what to do. It’s a very independent position and I love it. This video was cool

      I have worked with Dental hygienists that dictate their schedule and choose how long to schedule appointments, have the freedom to order whatever supplies they need or prefer (pink gloves, different mask colors, etc). But, I have also worked with Dental Hygienists that are treated like dental assistants, which isn't bad but they are pulled to help assist the Dr. etc.

    as a student (almost licensed!) with 0 experience, it's really comforting to know that our routines in clinic are basically the same as a practicing hygienist. minus the part where you see a lot more patients in one day. It just makes it less intimidating knowing I am being prepared correctly. Thank you!!

      @@omittable actually, dental assistants get WAY underpaid compared to hygienist. Average wage for DA is $13 to $16 where hygienist make anywhere from $30 to $40 an hour. Dental assistants do A LOT more than hygienist and are always under appreciated also. So no Mali Jabb... We don't get paid enough to do 90% of the workload while hygienists get away doing 10% of the workload while getting a fat check.

I have told her maybe become a dental assistant first to get the feel of working in a dental office. Then finish school for dental hygienist. I'm a mental health nurse and I work long hours, overnight, holidays and mandated many times. I don't want my daughter to live a life that requires to much time away from her to enjoying life and family.

    I just came across this channel. I'm a dental hygienist in Michigan. I graduated from the local college in 1985. Have been with the same dentist for 34 yrs, he is 90 and going good. He is down to 3 days a week. It's a super old office and many patients are as old as the doctor, he is working on 5th generation patients. I'll probably retire in about a year. When I think how much I'll miss those people I get sentimental. I wish I had modern equipment like you. Very nice office. When I first hired in I was told the first thing you do is punch in, the second thing you di is start the coffee pot. Then continue. Ha ha

      @ebonyrdh6772 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@TheTVqueen hi there. Sure, I can elaborate, but first, I'm so happy you're considering it. A good friend of mine was an RDH for idk, maybe 18 or 19 years and she went back to school to become an RN and she enjoys being able to do both, but her primary is nursing at the hospital. Anyway, Hygiene put me in a place where some already slightly damaged cervical and lumbar areas of the spine from when I was in the Army, became more damaged. Pain is no fun, and it can put a major damper on work and everything surrounding it. Posture is everything as a RDH so my back was making life hard. In my case, I've always had large breasts and my shoulders just moved more and more forward to accomodate the weight of those over the years, creating a major problem. Also, I'm left handed and dental hygiene caters to the majority, which is not me. Some other cons are time, sometimes you feel rushed to see all of your patients; therefore you find yourself trying to accommodate the patient and save time by losing the most ergonomic position and just working in the position that will save the most time. The redundancy of the daily routine also gets a lot of hygienists. Listen, although I have introduced you to some of the cons, there are many, many pros out there so maybe go in and shadow a hygienist and see how you like it. The field would love to have you 😉

      The most expensive thing on the planet is trust. It can take years to buy and simply a question of seconds to lose.
      . At the point when you fully trust someone, either you get an individual for life or an exercise forever. There’s no in the middle.
      Trust lies at the center of love; there can be no true love without trust. I feel so happy that the trust on one another continues developing.
      One of the greatest and toughest intensity of trust is that it is extremely difficult to build, however exceptionally simpler to obliterate. It resembles circulatory strain. It’s silent, vital to great wellbeing, yet whenever abused it is deadly.

    • @Rellchello
      @Rellchello 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      lrg Yeah no worries! Honestly, there’s a lot of potential reasons. I might stick with nursing as I just want to consider other possibilities. I went into the program with one of my best friends and she has since left the program; I also had some bad experience in the hospital and overall I just haven’t had time/don’t enjoy what I’m doing with my time while in the program. I have so much respect for the field and I know it’s in demand, but I guess I went into it blindly and while I want to help people and care for them, I don’t want to do it at the cost of my own well-being. Perhaps I will enjoy it eventually and feel happy as I know there’s so many different parts of nursing. Although, all things considered, I have always been a person who’s terrible with knowing what they want in life and despite it being my first year at uni I feel like this is my first time truly exploring possibilities for my future.

    I'm applying for the dental hygiene program at my school, for the third time. I've been a dental assisting for 8 years now.

    I loved this video! Are there Dental Assistants at your office? I thought they were the ones who set up the trays and break down the room.

      Thank you so much :) Some offices have specific dental hygiene assistants to help the hygienists - but some offices do not, in which case, the dental assistant is busy assisting the dentist, not the hygienist. It just depends on the office! Hope this helps! Thank you!

    That ultrasonic cleaner looks a lot like another machine that does the same thing for metal parts like gun parts . Supose to put in some cleaning chemical and water and vibrations clean it off .
