Blame the system. This is what happens when people believe in nonsense religions and cant think critically for themselves and are being low educated. These problems will exist for thousands of years to come because we still have these medieval systems in place. Same with all the arab countries they will still have war for thousands of years because they cant adopt their brains.

Compared to India the women are much more free & safer in China.
But Chinese women are not totally safe either. The police don't help with domestic abuse & bystanders are too scared to help anyone.
Just search "Chinese chained woman". A mentally ill lady who was kidnapped & sold as a wife & forced to birth many children. The government defended her husband even after she was found chained to a wall inside a shed like a dog, for her own safety apparently...

@Alex Berkeson I understand what you feel like. I am an Indian but I can't be proud of my country knowing that we live among these kind of people. The problem is that there are more percentage of uneducated people than those who are literate. The uneducated people live their lives in the ways they're brought up in and this makes their narrow minded thinking grow. In their lifestyle women are seen as objects or slaves who are supposed to tend to every need of the men or children.
They aren't seen as humans who should get equal opportunities. Instead they are seen as workers who should just cook and look after the household. In my village itself, the men are served food first and all the women are allowed to eat only after everyone else is fed. Moreover, the women eat whatever is left of the food they cooked.
So a lot of backward thinking like this exists in our country and unfortunately that degrades the country's reputation both inside as well as outside the country.
The real problem arises when these people try to interfere and defend themselves and this stupid mindset they hold. In their eyes, they see modernization as a sin and as a disgrace to our culture. This is because they think our culture is about how we dress up and how we present ourselves.
A lot of topics are looked upon as being a taboo.
      Eg. Sex, dating etc.
Since the educated population see these as natural behavior and not anything to be ashamed about, it creates a difference between the two.
I myself have been criticized a lot in my own village for having difference of opinions and mindset.
Lastly, I'm sorry for what you and your friend went through. If it isn't for these people, India is a beautiful country with lots to discover.
And problems are present in every country, I think instead of fighting about which country has what problems, we should focus on helping each other and standing as a mass against people with backward thinking and try to educate them about the right things because these people exist all over the world.

People were staring at them and taking up close pictures of them and their children, following them around, saying nasty things to his wife. While my dad or boyfriend was with me, they would pretty much leave me alone, but the minute I was perceived to be alone, they would swarm and stare, and touch. The best thing to do was to actually just get right back in their face and stare back, or yell at them. Ignoring them, acting, scared, or diminutive in any way. They will accuse you for propaganda instead, it is always the few options they can use as counter card. If they run out of options, they will use "China invented covid killing the world" or "at least we don't eat dog/bat soup" usually bend to lowest jab they can come out with racism
This is what happen when the nation has one of the cheapest internet, but at the same time slacking up with corruption and poverty meaning many childrens can't easily get access to education needs, even if they can get to school for free funding by government party but the parents tend to encourage them skipping classes in order to help make income for the household of 6 people. The cycle of literacy and widen inequality gap. Only 1% of the elites in India held on to 40% of the national wealth, smart people moved out of India hence brain drain. In China, at least government spend some effort to develop the education and their A tier city like Shanghai so that once those university graduated once they step out, they will have job opening for them even tho they still need to complete with 1000 people per interview. For India, job opening are usually based on hierarchy what level of caste background you're from to determine whether you get the job or not. And of course China city just paid the employee higher even if they work above legal working hours meanwhile India you do not know if you can secure your job for the next day when the union class suit is so weak in their legal state

Unfortunately, that's part of the India culture where women aren't supposed to just smile at random men, it's considered wrong for women to do. I know some people will argue, but please know im an Indian as well. For many Indians (especially the not so well educated), women are seen as something lower than men (like a property or toy).. even for Indian women, it's forbidden to wear skirts, Jeans etc. in many families. Again part of culture which brings about this looking down on women.

It's just disgusting Northerns allow their son, bf, father , husband to think like this. Because of the North I'm a ashamed to be an Indian. Thank god there is justice from the South. Google the % of rape from these 2 culture. 33% Northern rapes. Less than 1% in South. Shows u what type of people are these Northerns. I'm sorry to say. Even when u hear India doing shit to Muslims. It's mostly the useless Northerns . The Southerns have quite happy Muslims living among the communities. That's the different. Northern people should feel ashamed of themselves. Not because they all are backwards. It because they don't stop SOME people from being backwards. That's disgusting. From a Malaysian 👍🏾

The first time I faced harrasment was when I was just 8.....just 8! And it was an old ar$e man in my grandmother's neighbourhood whom I addressed as Nanaji (granpa). I'd like to point out something that's not talked enough about, Pdf-ilia is sooo common in India I feel like hidden pdps are EVERYWHERE!! You'd find grown up men gazing creepily on young girls all the time and no one talks about it!
Also, during teenage the cat calling, your phone number getting leaked among a group of boys, stalking etc were wayyy too common. When I discussed it with all my female friends and cousins it turned out every single one of us faced this! The very people who boast about out great culture and traditions are often the ones doing the exact opposite, they just put on a mask in front of the society as a 'nice guy'. The condition here is sickening tbfh

Things like this will never change or will change extremely slowly. I don't see it anywhere in the near future definitely. I've lived in India my whole life, but as long as you look different, a lot of people are gonna treat you accordingly. Just a week ago walking in the mg road area of Bengaluru, an auto guy came up to me and my brother, speaking English with an over the top accent cause he clearly thought we were not locals. After harassing us for a bit about taking a ride in his auto, he suddenly lets out "gori ch***" under his breath. But, it was loud enough that I heard it.
I abused him back in Hindi and he shut his mouth and drove away. You are completely right when you say that girls should just be aggressive with these types of men. If you seem weak, they'll try to push their luck and trouble you even more.
It's sick, but that's just how it is living here. You have to learn these things.

It isn't only tourists that experience this. Every girl in India feels unsafe to be out of their houses now a days because of this reason. We girls can't even go anywhere, do anything we like and wear anything we want. If we want to wear something, they will blame us that because of this, they got attracted. I mean why aren't men blamed? Girls are just doing what they want and wants to just feel safe other than our houses. Even when we are married, we still feel unsafe. I really am scared that I was born in country when every girl will feel this.
