Thank you for this clear, information-packed tutorial. I used to draw a lot, when I was younger, with both coloured and black pencils, but then work and family commitments left me no time to draw. Now I am suddenly extremely old, retired, and keen to start again. This video has given me the enthusiasm and confidence to get back to work. Thank you.

The most in depth, clear, easy to understand video I have seen so far for beginner colorists. thank you so much for taking the time to do this for us, it's just wonderful. Blessings from Elise Mitton, a 75 year old beginner - I found Adult colouring books during Covid which lasted on and off for almost 2 years here in Melbourne, Australia and have done mainly Mandalas with markers and gel pens, (a few with coloured pencils) which I find is like a meditation but lately I am interested in taking a step further, hoping I have the patience and my arthritic hands can cope, lol, to do more in depth colouring with coloured pencils. So grateful to have found you.

This is the most comprehensive video on youtube on this subject. I don't know how this does not pop up first when anyone types in anything about colored pencil. I found this just by chance and I am glad that I did. Paper, Lightfastness and Fixative are probably the major things everyone wants to know about. This video is a 38 minute masterclass really. I noticed you were using copics for part of your work. I thought all Copic markers were not lightfast? Is there a version of copic that is? If so, that would be awesome. Again thank you for this video. It is incredible. Just so you understand the person that is commenting here. i have drawn on printer paper, and Strathmore fine tooth sketch and probably with pencils that are not lightfast and thinking about everything i would need to learn to then make new art and also to then "rebuild" old art on better surfaces drives me insane haha.

Thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed this video. I used markers by w&n that were discontinued. Many of them are similar and I usually start with the light fastness charts to determine if I want to buy them or not. I don't know much about copic besides the fact that artists love those. ☺️ Happy drawing!

I recently began drawing, mostly as a hobby in my free time, but looking at your amazing video and otherworldly creations, a part of me feels like stopping, because I probably can never match this level of creativity and talent. It both motivates me and demotivates me at the same time. I wish I could go back in time 25 years ago, when I was still very young, so that I can develop the skills already back then. Having said that, the video is perfect, very helpful and informative, thank you so much for making it!

That's very nice of you to say and I can tell you that it's one of my regrets that I didn't do art as a child or teenager and began drawing in college after getting my first degree in a totally different profession. So start wherever you are. It does take time and effort but I think it's much easier to find the education you want to get today as opposed to what was available 25 years ago. So good luck! It's totally possible 😊🌾

I would like to offer you some constructive criticism, and a way to do it better.
    I hope you don't mind...
I watched your video and took a lot of tips from it. You have many good things to share, I learned a lot which helped me, so I'd like to help you back now.
I couldn't and wouldn't want to make a TH-cam video, but you do and it helps share knowledge and wisdom. I see the benefits of the videos.
If you don't mind a little advice, I think you could do this one aspect, better...
I am new to colouring with pencils, I've been doing it less than a week, but I instinctively achieved layering and blending to get almost the deepest colours with a light touch.
Of course I need a little effort to get the best pigment colouring, on the top level, but it isn't nearly so much effort to achieve, as scrubbing the pencil hard on the paper.
It will be much easier for you to make a new video, compared to
    a new pencil lol.
Happy colouring... I hope I helped you, thank you for helping me.

@@veronicasart hi! Well, I have your book 🥳🥳🥳🥳 I'm so happy to have it! Your book is so great! I love it!!! because you go straight to the point, and it is very easy to understand! Well, you mentioned in your book to use the markers, and the Windsor & Newton permanent markers they're discontinued, so my question is, in case I want to use the markers...can I use the Copic and you mention the Koh-I-Noor colored pencils...I am using the Prismacolors, the FC polychromos, and the Derwent Lightfast. Can I match the colors with these brands of colored pencils in the practice exercises?

I dont relate to what you are saying. Primacolors are good for students? derwent are creamy and soft? i think you mixed these two up. derwent coloursoft are the worst from the ones i own. they break a lot and they are not creamy at all. good for sketches maybe and for kids. same goes for their watercolor pencils. the prismacolors on the other hand are very creamy and blendable. polychromos are too strong for my taste, so they dont do well with prismacolors. maybe base layers they are fine or on their own. i havent tried luminance coz my love for colored penciles was replaced my something else at that point. :)

      We all have our preferences
What works for one person won't work for another. I like prismacolor a lot but many of them fade and other artists complain of breakage. There's no perfect medium or answer to anything because we're all different. Good luck in your creative pursuits.

@@veronicasartno there actually are differences in the quality and as a “teacher “ it is important to know that the brands are different and there are reasons why brands have more expensive lines and less expensive likewise how they blend with each other. It isn’t at all about picking favorites. I could use a handful of basic colors of the best brands but blending them they will make enough colors just like oil paint or watercolor paint. People can buy the best quality but less if they know how to use them.😊

@@veronicasart I just don’t see how something less creamy and blendable like polychromos can be better by a definition than Prismacolor pencils. Let’s put aside fade coz all pencils might fade over time. Breakage is the only thing that could possibly place Prismacolor at one step down. Because it’s annoying I agree. This is the reason why I don’t use Derwent anymore. My prismas don’t break. I have done lots of types of work on watercolor paper, smooth paper, sketchbook, with and without solvents. Anything less creamy or blendable cannot be better by definition because we are talking about colored pencils and they should have some good qualities- lots of pigment which is easy to apply and manipulate on a paper, build as many layers as you please. Anything less places a product in the category of pencils for kids and the price for them becomes not justified at all. In fact polychromos are much more tricky in that matter. Wrong type of paper - and they don’t work. And they can not be used on top of Prismacolor pencils whatsoever. They are just too hard. Good for base layers. Well, if one is just marking paper with a pencil, then I assume even pencils for kids would be fine.

Anyways 18:29. Proportions are not right. Blush is too strong of a pink. Should be more delicate. Just everything seems too soft without interest in hard shadows. Sorry but not looking at your channel. Goodbye. Even if you respond, I don't care to look at an artist who doesn't know what they're talking about.
