  • Layering is vital when making realistic colour pencil drawings wether you have 3 pencils, or 300! In fact, the less colours you have, the more important layering becomes as chances are you don't have a perfect colour match to the reference and you need to use layers to adjust.
    I drew this rose using only colours from the Faber-Castell Polychromos set of 12, and although I didn't have the exact pinks and greens I needed, with layering I can create pretty much any colour needed for the drawing.
    If you'd like to draw this rose with me in real-time, it's part of my beginner friendly series over on Patreon and great for anyone looking to get into colour pencil art.

    A wonderfully thought out approach to colored pencil flowers. Your narrative is fabulous, and your explanation of layering is easy to understand. So glad I found your videos. Keep up the great work!!

      Maybe you should try to study the basics of drawing like perspective, form, colors and light. I found that people who mastered the basics draw great pictures no matter what medium they use.

      Apprenticeship, working directly under a master, takes 1 to 6 years. Then, becoming a Jouneryman takes 2 years. Then a master another 2 years. So don't be discouraged. Behind the scene, statistical, it has taken an artist 10 years to get to their skills level. And if they appeared young, it's most likely it because they have been drawing since they were a little kid.

    I got the 120 set and what a nice set of pencils they are! It's a close second to my Pablos in the prettiest set I own.

    One thing l think is critical beyond the blending technique is the surface you are working on. I have tried various papers. Some were sold as Colored Pencil papers that would not accept layering at all usually I just go with a heavier cardstock

    Wow, I've never seen this before. As a complete beginner, I tried something similar years ago but it really didn't work for me. - I thought I was using the wrong medium. I mustn't have been going light enough. I imagine it's a very forgiving technique for a beginner, thanks very much for the tutorial.

    I'm having some trouble sometimes layering because for some reason I'm not always sure which colours are the right ones I need to use and we I should layer them. Also with the like shading areas, you need to use lighter or darker colours. I quite like watercolours, acrylic, oil pastels, oil paints, drawing, colouring. I quite like doing art about nature, but I'm the worst at drawing people, especially portraits.

  • @bimmermom
    @bimmermom ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I’ve been meaning to ask … it doesn’t look like you use a pencil to outline the item you’re colouring … you appear to just start off with the colour pencil and start with the colouring and yet you still manage to get the item in exactly the right position is that correct? If this is the case then its even more amazing

    • @melkmb
      @melkmb ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I believe she has an outline but it’s just so light that the camera doesn’t pick it up. You don’t want to have very dark graphite lines because it could muddy the colors and you won’t be able to get rid of the graphite under the colored pencil. I always thought the same thing before I heard someone explain it.

      A lot of artists draw it in lightly but more visibly, correct it until it's perfect, and then almost totally erase it til it's very faint and mostly go on memory.
