this game is definitely on my "to buy and try" list, but from what I've heard about its detractors, and from what I saw from gameplay, while the game makes an excellent deconstruction of the Bushido, and ultimately shatter the Paragon that Samurai were perceived as, the problem is, the mongols are caricatures of bad guys. the standard mobs attack civilians on sight, and the one fully fledged mongol character, Khotun Khan, is an unrepentant monster. It would have been nice to add moments where the mongols soldiers actually show mercy to the inhabitants of the island (like, say random encounters where mongols soldiers actually help citizens, like, escorting them from town to town or helping one fix his carriage and so on...) or having another major mongol character who would have been depicted in the game as growing more and more disgusted by Khotun Khan's methods (like a certain character I won't mention because spoiler), and eventually turning on him (not in the "I'm with you now, Jin Sakai" sense, in the sense where he actually send messages to his hierarchy back in the mongol empire to tell them about Khotun Khan's exactions), that would have depicted the mongold in a more realistic light rather than making them puppy-strangling machines, imo.
@@origamifan5515 This is not a realistic game. The mongols did a good job at being enemies to kill. If I wanted to know what the mongols were actually like I'd watch a documentary but I see where you're coming from.

@@origamifan5515 well actually there is a lot of depth with the mongols, like how in one of the camps you liberate theres a grave of a mongol, you can tell by the spear, sheild and helmet. And if you read the records of khotun khan you would know he isnt just ruthless but also intelligent, forgiving, wise and open to new ideas like Jins poison. I get what you mean about the portrayal but the mongols in history were really brutal with those who denied rulership and they killed millions probably stagnating future development of technology for a couple of years.
SPOILERS FOR ENDING SCENE: how I saw the spare vs kill: spare: Following Jin's code, which was that it was morally wrong to kill his uncle as he loved him. kill: Following Shimura's warrior code, an act of honor and duty. I chose spare. Jin no longer abides by the Samurai code, he puts his morals above it, and loves his uncle too much to bear killing him. Either way, no ending is truly good. They are both tragedies in their own rights.
I feel the same. I actually chose to kill shimura tho considering the shogun was going to punish him if not kill him if he didn't cut down jin. Just seemed like giving him a warriors death was the much more respectful route.
@@chivasroco1752 right. Plus you gotta think too. Shimura's life was pretty much over once Jin was deemed as a traitor. He really didn't want to start a new family. I think killing him was probably way more kind than walking away

@@chivasroco1752 yea same. But when you think about it, jin had no honor when it came to fighting the mongols bc they did not deserve it. However his uncle did. That's why I think that ending is much more impactful
I think I found this fight so damn difficult because I didnt WANT to fight Lord Shimura. I wanted to fight Ryuzo, I wanted to fight Khotun. I spent the first few minutes just defending and evading, hoping maybe it would be time-gated.
I did every duel prior to the ending, practicing, thinking that I would have an epic final boss be the Khan. But after reaching the end, I realized I will be fighting Shimura
@@kt1787 same, i did all the duels, all the secondary missions and free all the enemy outposts before go to fight the khan. When I fought him and later defeat him i feel great but at the same time I did feel that something isn't right. Then the real final mission started and I realized that it has the time to pay for all the sacrifice and wrongdoings that Jin maded in order to stop the khan.
I did the same thing. I actually let him kill me twice just to make sure. In the end I chose to kill Lord Shimura as a final goodbye to him, letting him die the way he wanted to, with honor.
“Let the Shimuras of the world keep records and manage councils.. We are the lighting in the storm... The avalanche that topples a mountain. That is Clan Sakai.” -Kazumasa Sakai I adore this quote.
It basically fits perfectly with Jin's ending. Sakai Clan vanished Shogun wanting him dead And his only family making the Shogun's wish. The Ghost Army is celebrating. But deep inside. As all the other Ghosts. The Ghost of Tsushima is dead inside.
@@mike589 I enjoyed the kill ending more; it had greater emotional impact. But, I agree with those who say that the spare ending is the canon one. Jin would never kill his own family, even if it were their wish.
It's crazy to me that so many people will write off videogames as a waste of time or whatever, but then they'll go ahead and sit down and watch a movie. Yet games like this exist, and tell a story better than most movies could ever wish to tell.
This ending is one of the best I have seen in my three decades as a gamer. I cried all the way through the credits, it hit me so hard and I'm not ashamed to admit it.
One of the saddest video game battles I never wanted to fight. Where you’re forced to fight your only remaining family, the man who was pretty much your father after you lost your parents. Saddest moment of all😭😭
The last fight with shimura really had me crying a little. Every swing I made with that sword just made my heart ache and shed tears. I spared him in the end. I just couldn't kill him at all.
@@demonofdeath2020 I spared him in my first play through and when i recently replayed the game before the iki expansion came out I killed him, I feel like sparing him is the right choice story wise but man killing him hits so much harder.
As much as I wanted to spare Lord Shimura, I chose to kill him to honor his final wishes. Lord Shimura wanted to die seeing his son honoring the samurai code one last time. The Shogun was already out for Shimura’s blood because he had already failed to kill Jin. Shimura no longer had retainers. He was poised to be replaced by another clan.
Exactly. And even in the mission where you sneak out of Castle Shimura, you can hear the other samurai talking about how Shimura's failures are starting to add up, and that another clan may have to clean up the mess afterwards. With that context, I just don't see how Shimura gets away scot-free if Jin spares him.
@@kartikayysola Yuna and Jin talk about it after the credits if you spare him and it doesn't seem like anything happened. Also, when you tell Shimura that you won't kill him, he tells Jin that he'll be hunted for the rest of his days for his actions, but he's suppressing a smile while he says it. sparing Lord Shimura is definitely the better ending.
@@LazzyVamples "it doesn't seem like anything happened" Yet. I'd be willing to bet they're saving that for a sequel. And he didn't look like he was smiling at all in the spare ending to me. Why would he? He asked for an honorable death and his nephew refuses to grant even that wish. Now he's stuck with having failed to kill Jin TWICE, coupled with the previous defeat at Komoda Beach in the beginning of the game and the fact that it was Jin who ultimately took the Khan's head. With the new samurai clans coming in that owe Shimura absolutely nothing, it's just hard for me to see how he isn't living on borrowed time if he is spared.
@@LazzyVamples okay let's say you're right for argument's sake, I still don't see how that refutes anything I said in the comment before. Plus on my end, I just didn't have it in me to say no to the last wishes of Jin's only remaining family.
I think the most beautiful thing about this, is that it’s a combination of 3 different themes. “The Way of the Ghost”, “Jin Sakai”, and “Lord Shimura”. This game did everything spot on.
0:00 is a rendition of the Ghost of Tsushima theme, and it grows in magnitude until around 2:23, where a version of Lord Shimura's theme can be heard, signifying the two sides of the final duel. As the song progresses, it becomes more and more obvious that this is no battle fought out of a need to kill, or out of hatred, but of pure sadness and obligation, either to continue protecting one's people, or to uphold one's virtues and honor. These two individuals, like two sides of the same coin, are too opposite to be able to work together any further, and they both understand this with a grim revelation beginning at Castle Shimura, and concluding and enclosing their struggle in the Sakai cemetery.
I had a hard time with this boss fight. Not because i was bad but because I didnt want to fight my uncle. Its hard when you do things a different way to make your life better and your family hates you for it.
I don't think Lord Shimura hated Jin, quite the opposite I would say. However, he held duty and honor above all as that was the way and he had a direct mandate from the Shogunate to execute Jin. In his eyes he had no choice but to do his duty as much as it broke his heart. That is why I chose to kill Shimura, not for Jin's honor but for Shimura. Because it meant a lot to him and him failing in his duty would have greatly dishonored him while dying in honorable combat was honorable. And given the way the culture was back then, he would have likely been ordered to harikiri for failure in his duty to regain his honor anyway even though that is not what happens in the game.
@@Kaous10 yea exactly. Putting ourselves in the context is important. Dying a warrior's death was important to all committed samurai and meant that they would be reincarnated as a higher level being. Though I personally chose to spare, to reflect the ghost leaving the flawed samurai code behind.
@@archivedaccount2000 I can see why people would spare him but I think Jin loved him enough to honor his wish. Jin's honor was already gone so there was no regaining it for him. However, killing Lord Shimura was the selfless act as it wasn't for him but for Lord Shimura. Jin did what he had to do in approaching the mongols to save the most amount of lives I agree, but he really put Lord Shimura in a shitty situation by doing what he did in that society because not only had he broken the code severely, he had made the people lose faith in the chain of command and the Shogunate itself and that wouldn't be allowed to stand. Lord Shimura had put his name and therefore reputation on the line by asking the Shogunate to adopt Jin officially. Then by Jin doing what he did, he unwittingly dragged Lord Shimura's name through the mud with him. He backed Lord Shimura into a corner at that point and Shimura was honor bound to kill him to regain his own honor as the Shogunate saw him as the one who created this problem. Lord Shimura would have never been allowed to be in peace had he failed to kill Jin who had become an enemy of the Shogunate at this point.
For those who arguing that Jin should have killed Shimura - you're forgeting the final lesson of Ishikawa sensei! - Family should come before the honour.
Or they understand that honoring Shimura's wish would grant their last living relative with an honourable death, something he very much desired. After the duel either Shimura dies, or Jin dies in Shimura's eyes. At least Shimura and Jin's final moment can be of father and son. Jin's honour is already gone, I won't let Shimura be forced to live without his.
It wasn't about the honor in my mind, it was respecting shimura's final wish. As others have said, he also would've likely committed seppuku at the command of the shogun anyway.
I also just couldn’t kill him. My mind said killing him was the right decision but I just couldn’t do it! I just felt an fatherly like emotion for him! I already lost one but not another.
Jin's pain was massive, all the sacrifices he had to go through in pursue of the salvation of his homeland, but do not forget that Shimura suffered as well, and not a little: he fought in the name of honor and his legacy, but his legacy has always included Jin, his son who was willingly adopted by him. So seeing Jin following the path of the Ghost, seeing him sacrificing everything for Tsushima although he would be called traitor, not being able to help Jin in any way because as the jito he would have stained forever the tradition of samurai if he dared to follow the Ghost, all this hurt Shimura so much that he lacks every confidence in his last mission, put the tale of the Ghost to an end. In the end Shimura prefers to face Jin in a duel because out of all his options these were the best two: killing Jin in order to maintain the culture of samurai which have always maintained peace, or having an honorable death after a duel with his son, saving Jin. Neither of these are correct and Shimura knew this, he knew that things that he loved would be harmed anyway, was it his son or his country. Shimura infact never wanted to win this final fight, but loosing it meant bringing offense to his and his ancestors' legacy: in the end when he looses he asks for an honorable death to prove if Jin still believed in the samurai, but also to end all that painful conflict he had inside.
@@UKEDNHAT7 I have an unpopular opinion so therefore I haven’t finished the game? I just commented about the endings!! People need to stop overrating games
These parts right here 2:53 and 3:43 sends chills down my spine. Of coarse the buildup throughout the track is what makes those specific moments of the track so amazing in the first place.
I think that part and the whole song as dreadful, theres no way Jin is losing since you're playing as him, thus the knowledge that you're going to defeat your Uncle/Father makes you delay the inevitable.
When I replayed this game on the Director’s Cut, when fighting Shimura, I chose not to use ghost stance or dance of wrath because the fight was meaningful. Even though I died a few times. This fight is truly heartbreaking
I had no resolve during my fight lmao because I did the Khotun Khan and the Shimura fight back to back. I felt it was more authentic. Jin just finished killing Khotun Khan and he can't even get a moment's rest and he immediately has to go and meet hus uncle. His headspace is at an all time low and he just wants to protect the people and honor his uncle, the one who raised him. It honestly felt poetic to me. PS sorry for the long ass para lol.
Lord shimura gave Jin so many chances possibly risking his reputation with the shogun just goes to show how much he cared about Jin which makes it more Sad at the end
At that part I was going crazy with the charged up water stance stagger then we traded blows with 1 hp left with the moon stance and finished him with the wind stance kick.
This game left a really profound impact on me, especially given my time playing it was the peak of the pandemic. Everything was falling apart in my world, but not on the level of Jins, I got evicted from my childhood home (And I had to bail my very dear family member out financially, and I found out how bad her gambling addiction was) right at the start of Covid and right as soon as I finished unpacking in the new place, I sliced my achillies tendon and couldn't walk for almost six months. Given what I said earlier I was very bitter and isolated, and then this game found its way to me. Whenever I feel like my past is tying me down, I come back to this game and its amazing music to remind me of how Jin Sakai burn a path ahead and endured.
Although we all grew to like Jins Tio through out the game, killing him in the end is painful as fans but in theory it IS the right choice to make. If you choose to not to, his Tio probably goes back to the Shogun without doing what he was set out to do and more than likely he’d feel shamed more than he already had at that point. Jin has no “honor” as the Ghost but as the “son” to his Tio, the feelings are more apparent at that point in the game of what needs to be done.
Honor vs Effectiveness. How do you fight an enemy that will try to win in every way possible? A bitter story between uncle and son. Fighting to save the people but without honor and fighting with honor but being predictable. A story with no good ending truly a work of art.
@@thotslayerdante5737 he does, the Shogun orders for the death of Lord Shimura. It is also brought up in conversation amongst the commercial that the Lord has died, even after you spare him. I chose to kill lord Shimura, not for my honor, but for my uncles honor.

All the side quests are actually fun, i care for all the side characters that have their own quests... this game is all around just incredible.
This track is amazing. It’s got Ennio Morricone vibes during the build-up, and the part that starts around 2:20 perfectly depicts the pent up emotion between the two characters being unleashed on each other as they trade blows.
*spoiler* I hadn't the strength of killing Shimura, not after losing Taka, my first horse Kage and Yuriko. Even if I played mainly as a samurai and less as the ghost, I couldn't grant his wish. It would have been too heartbreaking... :')
I chose the spare ending as well because its like the logical ending for me, jin is no longer a samurai, he is now the ghost, a warrior with no honor till the end and i like how he puts on the mask tafter he said line and walked away, simbolizing his choice of accepting the no honor path
If you spare Shimura, he's going commit seppuku for being spared by the ghost and return to the Shogun empty handed. Plus he can't start a family until he kills Jin and that the clans from the mainland were going to replace him after his past failures at Komodaa beach along with the bridge bombing that was hinted by the conversations among Samurais.
I think SP will pressent it in the next state of play, i heard about a game of sucker punch called "Ghost of Kamakura" and the first i thing is in a sequel of this beautifull game...
I love this games whole concept of Honor and Tradition Vs Guerilla Warfare and dirty tricks. The samurai code has brought order to Tsushima, yet it made them rigid and predictable. The Ghosts tactics were effective but also brutal, savage and inhumane, but so were the mongols. If people look up to the Ghost and lose faith in the samurai, they would question their laws put in place by them and resort to governing themselves which could lead to violent anarchy. Never have I ever seen a game with such an interesting concept.

This game hits PTSD for me( as the character of jin you feel the physical therapy of owning your craft and the spiritual message of his struggles. The first AC did that for me then Revelations.
I gave this game a shot after years of ignorance. Completed it a day or two ago. One thing, one experience that made this final fight great for me it was the tone of music during the duel. There was a moment in the fight that really made me snap, i usually like to have a passive reactive stance, always being methodical with my moves. Counterattacks, dodges etc. Rarely i would lash out and be the agressor myself, my interpretation of Jin while being mad in certain points in the story he always remains concetrated and discipline in fights. But in that duel, when Shimura said "This is not my revenge, this is my punishment." A phrase he used for the second time (first in cutscene) it really angered me and turned me into the agressor. And surprisingly, i do not know if that was intentional by the devs or not but the timing when Shimura says this, the music at 2:22 is syncronized. Its the turn from slow and harmonic melody, dramatic vibe into a more tense one. I went really agressive and created quite a fast paced and cool back and forth. Which again, i rarely do, only when i feel really confident. The amazing music sync always has me wondering, was that on purpose? Because by that time you have exchanged several blows. It is the last phase. On the second clashing of swords Shimura says this. Personally this entire thing impacted me, in a way where i already decided. I am not gonna feel bad for Shimura any longer. He proves to be a slave to his code of honor, not even bending it slightly or whatever. Not even for his own family. That moment... 2:22 really got me, my head cannon is that even Jin himself changed. From "I do not want to hurt you.", to being an enemy. Shimura had a choice...he could simply let his son/nephew leave. He did not...he no longer is the loving and caring Uncle, but a pawn. This man before him, is not Shimura. Its the Shogun.
“The wounds you have caused me, will never heal” “Killing me will only make them worse” “Please let me go in peace” “This is not my revenge… it is my punishment” Years later and it still sends me chills and makes me emotional as fuck

I think I found it difficult because he kept goddamn one-hitting me on lethal xD
I did the same thing. I actually let him kill me twice just to make sure. In the end I chose to kill Lord Shimura as a final goodbye to him, letting him die the way he wanted to, with honor.

One of the saddest video game battles I never wanted to fight. Where you’re forced to fight your only remaining family, the man who was pretty much your father after you lost your parents. Saddest moment of all😭😭
😔
The last fight with shimura really had me crying a little. Every swing I made with that sword just made my heart ache and shed tears. I spared him in the end. I just couldn't kill him at all.
Exactly the same feeling and some people say it's just a game !!! Bruh it's not man trust me some games are not just games they are life and soul
@@demonofdeath2020 I spared him in my first play through and when i recently replayed the game before the iki expansion came out I killed him, I feel like sparing him is the right choice story wise but man killing him hits so much harder.
@@Will-gg1zr i already defeated him over 15 times in replay duels i just love this fight !!!!! The music and the melody in the middle
I spared him in the first playthrough. But like, later on I wanted the White Ghost Armor, and so I had to kill him :(
As much as I wanted to spare Lord Shimura, I chose to kill him to honor his final wishes.
@@LazzyVamples "it doesn't seem like anything happened"
Yet.
@@kartikayysola He's DEFINITELY suppressing a smile. either you weren't paying attention or you don't know how to read expressions.
“The wounds you have dealt my spirit will never heal...”
“Killing me will only make it worse. Let me go in peace.”
" I can't fail the Shogun! "
Eyes that saw my pain
A fate neither of us want
This is where we part
- Last words of Clan Sakai
... and Clan Shimura.
Hahha, what about Last of us part 3? xD bte I loved that game
No you are bad bhhahahahha
For those who arguing that Jin should have killed Shimura - you're forgeting the final lesson of Ishikawa sensei! - Family should come before the honour.
shimura wouldve been forced to commit seppuku later anyways, so you may as well grant his last wish
You say that as if giving him an honorable death isn't also a family-driven choice.

This game left a really profound impact on me, especially given my time playing it was the peak of the pandemic.
“Uncle, forgive me”
It was the right choice! Still...is sad.
Experiment 765 yes it is. Seeing Jin and his code starting to wane away.
