This particular type of Army vehicle was called a 'CRATT' - Combat Radio and TeleType. Before Parakeet, it allowed relatively isolated units to receive "signals" information in the middle of nowhere. The CRATTs could receive information, at an extreme, using HF - printing out information using a secure means. When I worked with 21 Construction Squadron in the late '80s, we had a CRATT det when working up the GAFA and MAMOFA; that could do anything. We worked with 1 Signal Regiment to secure working HF spectrumsat all times as, interestingly, the Army controlled the HF spectrum into the early '90s.

I should add that the CRATTs towed a one tonne trailer with fuel, water and some Bearer equipment. The Linesman would be responsible for placing a Bearer for greater range. Given contemporary technology, the Australian Army no longer needs Bearers, Linesman nor Riggers.

Your best vehicle yet. One question? Is that 5 speed from an Isuzu (MSA) or is it the R380 Land Rover box? The gear knob is definitely not LR.

04:30 those lugs are tie down points. When the the vehicle was FOI, years ago, the vehicle was lifted by under belly slings by Blackhawks and Chinooks.
This is my 40th year in the Army, I seen the wheel go around a few times. Are they a rated recovery point? They are not.

Their a great 4x4 to modify, there is a difference between a County and a Perentie, the GVM is one and the County did come with 5 speeds and a v8 petrol as well as the 4bd1. The County was the best out of all the land rovers because of its motors, gearboxes and of its coil springs. Very hard to find them these days for good reasons.

My perentie is only about $30000 and 2 years of labour away from potentially looking like this 😅

06:00 probably needs 600 Kg constant weight on the back ...

04:50 "welded on" - if it's not a penetrative weld, it will fail.
