Yep. Luckily there aren't a lot of people around that're still into ancient Sumerian religion/culture, or they'd be up in arms about Tiamat in D&D being "appropriation".

He’s a very good boy, and is not above cooperating to reach a goal. He’s not really a bad guy, he just thinks momma Tia deserves better than her terrible brother.
The lore conflict between Io's death and the tearfall is because it's general D&D lore conflicting with Forgotten realms lore. Whenever there's an inconsistency it's because the Forgotten realms lore doesn't line up with general D&D lore.

I do believe they reference the battle with Erek-Hus as being fought by Asgorath, and not Io. There is still conflict with that clarification of course but I thought it was interesting to point out. In my opinion however, it is far more likely that Asgorath never _actually_ died in the first place. It has been speculated (both within universe and without) that Zehir somehow weakened Asgorath before his conflict with Erek-Hus as part of a bid to steal the Draconic portfolio. If this is true, then it is wholly possible that what is commonly considered a sundering was actually a sloughing- with the draconic god relinquishing portions of his own portfolio in order to generate beings capable of combating Erek-Hus without fear of Zehir's treachery. If the theory arguing that Asgorath was not simply synonymous with Io, but rather an aspect of the vaster deity is correct, then it is also possible that it was the portions of Io's portfolio represented by Asgorath that were used for this process, which would explain how the misconception that it was the death of the dragon god might arise. I mean, dragonborn were on the other world when separated and since there were no gods, most dragonborn do not worship gods as none came to help them out of slavery. Drqgonborn also are not native to the world.
I'm still trying to rationalize the whole timeline discrepancy with IO getting cut in half and Asgorath(IO) chucking the moon at Abeir-Toril later. Best I can come up with is maybe IO and Asgorath are actually not the same or perhaps were different aspects of one another. Or/Also, since it is speculated whether Bahamut and Tiamat were either two halves of IO, or they were simply the children of IO (or Asgorath), I wonder if the answer lies somewhere in a more complicated family tree that involves Null, Tamara, and Lendys. ... or... Love the vids man keep it up.
@Jorphdan I think asgorath threw the moon to the toril during her fight with the chaos primordial after failing to kill it, the chaos primordial cut her into two
It starts off good but I'm on chapter 5 now and I think I might have to rewrite some of it... I think I'll steal this one dudes idea and have the party fight the bad guys (was thinking of throwing in some Githyanki since they have a deal with Tiamat) while on the backs of a couple dragons. Also, in the dragon hatchery, I put a silver dragon egg in with the black ones as if the black dragon hatchlings would have eaten it. My party saved it, and it just hatched last night on the road to Elturel!
@@ScottNetherstone I had to do a bit of jiggery pokery with my campaigns. I felt the Elturel journey was too long so they went straight to Baldur's Gate instead, which served the same purpose. 1 of them has just finished the caravan and got to Waterdeep, others are still halfway into the Convoy.
I love the video! This may have made some time ago, but where could I find the image you used at 3:38. Would love the reference to show to my players. Thanks!
I was playing a DnD game as a monk where she ended up going into battle and losing her leg. She then prayed to any random god out there (DM made me roll percentile dice) she was either going to get Tiamat or Bahamut. She ended up getting a 52 and getting a brand new shiny dragon leg. Needless to say she now worships bahamut 100%. For a little bit more backstory my Monk is a wood elf with a dragon leg, and can now move at 50ft and has healing abilities due to taking a level in paladin(due to her deal with Bahamut)
Are we not getting more pantheon videos? I would LOVE some on the giant pantheon. They have such a full set of gods and would be useful for Storm Kings Thunder and Against Giants allowing for 14 levels of giant adventures in 5e!
Jorphdan by all means, take your time. I was loving the Eberron series as well, so it’s not like I was chomping at the bits for this one video. I’m just glad to have a bit more backstory for the Dragon deities.
Though I've never played the game the way you describe Bahamut makes him sound like my kind of dragon the way he frowns upon chaos, war and violence but does possess a limited amount of compassion. Again I've never played the game a day in my life but I like Bahamut.
Thank you Jorphdan. Any other lore you'd recommend looking at for Rise of Tiamat? It's all over the place in terms of the locations you travel to and I don't want to miss any particularly interesting bits of lore my players might enjoy or interact with.
Good question. I'm hoping to answer this in my next Campaigns Explained video where I'll talk about the Hoard of the Dragon Queen and Rise of Tiamat. That won't be till mid to late Feb though. I'm still researching.
@@Jorphdan that's awesome, and completely understandable considering that Tyranny of Dragons takes you to many places in the Sword Coast and beyond which as explained in your previous videos, has quite a lot going on.
*At the **3:50** mark, why no mention of the Dragonlance/Krynn form of Tiamat, Takhisis, as shown behind Alhana Starbreeze, or her Platinum Dragon counterpart, Paladine/Fizban?*
The easy answer anytime gods do anything out of consequential time - such as the Asgorath issue above - is to assume that mythological shenanigans occur in "Godtime", when everything kind of happens at once, or at least without the intimate connection to framework of causality that "Human Time" is experienced in.
While I assume you did already (if you did I couldn't find it), and if you didn't I suggest that you make a video on all of the dragon species which will probably take multiple videos. As I haven't seen anyone go into detail on the lesser known dragons like the shadow dragon, purple dragon, admanatine dragon, etc.
This is awesome. In my own lore for my campaign (which is based off of the Sunless Citadel module), I had a slightly different interpretation of Bahamut. In my lore, he's almost like an Abrahamic god in his fury. He's still lawful good, but he has little tolerance for imperfection. Ashardalon (a kingdom dedicated to the worship of Bahamut, not a dragon) was an extremely advanced civilization that could be seen as we see the Roman Empire now. They were extremely powerful, but their hegemony was largely unchallenged and their civilization gradually turned to depravity on their lofty thrones. The dragonpriests gradually became less powerful in the Ashardalon government, and the rich and powerful Ashardalonian elites held an iron tight grip on the empire. After generations of this, Bahamut lost hope for Ashardalon and it's people. He slaughtered every single man, woman and child of that once great empire, including the dragonpriests. To him, it was all wicked, and the only way to right the wrongs of Ashardalon was to erase it, all of it, off the face of this world.
Yep! The image of the 5dragons above the dark haired woman with outstretched hand was Takhisis from one of the book covers, and the image of the blonde elfmaid in chains before the 5headed dragon, that dragon was also her. Unfortunately Dragonlance is not as well known as Forgotten Realms and unless they changed it for 5th edition, split off from Ad&d back in 3rd edition to turn to D20. I have both the original and the D20 source sets. Tho a creative and skilled GM could probably adapt it to work with 5th edition.
@@silverbane8065 I would love to be able to play a Dragonlance campaign. I've seen a few Dragonlance campaign books on EBay and have been tempted to buy them, mainly just to look at and have as part of my collection. I'm still a newbie at D&D with not even a year's experience so probably wouldn't stand a chance a trying to make a 5e adventure from them.
My group did just barely prevent her return in Rise of Tiamat thanks to our Cleric's Divine Intervention and are Bard's Wish. Our group was level 19 going into that final battle and our DM had a custom-made Tiamat stat block that would have seriously f***** our s*** up had we not stopped her rise. I feel kind of bad we didn't allow our DM to use his giant five-headed dragon mini or his custom stat block, yet also relieved at the same time.
So, I found this D&D book "Races of the Dragon" that tells a different story about the Dragonborn. Like that Bahamut created them, or I guess forged them from individuals of the other races that sought his favor and power against Tiamat. But, what really interested me was they told a different tale about Bahamut and Tiamat's origin. Io was attempting to create the perfect dragon in all aspects (or something like that) which lead to the creation of simple-minded Vorel, Bahamut, and Tiamat. Though not being exactly what he wanted, he hoped Bahamut and Tiamat would learn from each other and create the perfect dragons he was striving for, but that didn't work out either. They just ended up rivals for his favor, which ended with Tiamat killing Vorel and trying to frame Bahamut. The deception failed, and Io banished her. Driven by spite of this she went off to create evil creatures and Dragonkind, and Bahamut went off to oppose her creating good Dragonkind to stand in her way. So is this story retconned? from a different multiverse, or what? To be honest, I kind of like this idea of Io trying to create a dragon kind that perfectly embodies all that is Dragon and Bahamut and Tiamat being by products of that, which inspired my own lore.
a lot of what I pulled from was 4th edition lore, so yes perhaps it's changed or that is a different story of Bahamut in another multiverse. It's really great though, thanks for sharing :D
Everyone forgets that in one version of the story, Io was cut in THREE pieces, and they became THREE sibling dragon gods. Why does everyone forget that forgotten realms is not the ONLY cannon D&D setting, plus forgotten breaks established dragon lore.
@@evanlambert1438 you don't know? He was one of the first edition dragon gods! (No, IO was introduced in 2E) And I mean dragon, not lung gods like star, sun, moon, and the great one are. Those guys aren't literal star dragons, but that's their name.
I think that the story of Bahamut and Tiamat’s creation took place on Abeir, which was after Toril as we know it was created. The reason for this is due to the existence of Dragonborn. Which according to Mr Rhexx, did not appear on Toril until after the Spellplague.
I have an idea: Asgorath dislodged the cosmic body that would eventually create the Sea of Fallen Stars during the battle, but it took a while to reach Toril
In my current game. Many dragons of both matalic and chromatic are trying to unite Bahamut and Tiamat for dragon kind to arise as one force and shape their kind, prue dragons.
there actually are other platinum dragons, but bahamut is unique among them because they usually lack wings, there are a few other platinum dragon gods in the draconic pantheon (Lendys and Tamara)
No amount of evil could ever do a thing other then captivate energy not maintain energy that never be mortal, transcended or at all in-between. Only dammed, redeemed, reformed & kept in solitude.
the conflict with the tearful could be do to how the gods fuck with space and time so freely and that is also one of the reasons why the aboleths hate the gods so much
I usually have Io/Asgorath having set events into motion for Tearfall to happen as their dying act to make myths consistent. Now that I'm thinking of it, they are a dragon God of Creation, why not have their final breath weapon fired into the sky to create the ice moon that created the Sea of Fallen Stars?
Two notes on this. The Cult of Dragons in Toril/Faerun/Sword Coast is a cult of dragon necromancers, not Tiamat worshippers. That is The Cult of the Dragon Queen. Second, in the events of Tyranny of Dragons, Tiamat is not summoned, but one of her avatars. She can not leave the Nine Hells. Of course, DMs can do what they will.
So this might be an old video, but I need some help and guidance. In a homebrew campaign setting i'm making, I was thinking of using Bahamut as the final boss the party will face. Not Bahamut as a force of divine justice like in DnD, but more like a force of destruction and rebirth like in Cygames's Bahamut. My question is, where can I find some stats for Bahamut, and how I should create it?
I'd use an adult dragon from the monster manual that fits your idea of Bahamut. Then give him a cool ability or breath attack that again fits your idea.
I haven't done a video specifically on the Sharn, or Phaerimm. But I talk about the Phaerimm in this Netheril video. th-cam.com/video/4sG2jxqMsQY/w-d-xo.html
So in a campaign that me and my friends planning to do a campaign and I've made and aasimar of asgorath who wants to bring him back to repay him for... something, and needs to convince both tiamat and bahamut to be willing to help him
Io exists outside of time, they are all encompassing, things such as linear time is something for mortals. that is how they can cause something even though they died before that time.
Maybe Asgorath threw the moon from a great distance away and then teleported to Toril and had their fight with the King of Terror before the moon got there
Maybe all (non player made) platinum dragons are him really? I remember how I freaked out when I got the best bahamut summon in ff7 and watched the fmv for it. Turned to my cat to say "now THAT'S a platinum drago...oh bugger!" And that was when it hit me lmao (I knew more about Dragonlance than forgotten realms back then, so it was a bit of a mind-blow moment hehe)
I know video been out for awhile but I recently started playing D&D love all your lore videos just wanted to know if followers of Bahamut had a time to pray to him for spells as I'm playing a dragonborn paladin?
She's my favorite :) Not sure what extra info I can find, covered her a bit in the Demon Lords video. But I'll add her to the list and see what I can dig up!
@@Jorphdan hey word of advice if you have trouble finding a whole lot of info consider paring her with another demon we know little about like Juiblix ( i think that how that's spelled?) just a thought
I was just thinking 'The two dragon gods are awesome but how the hell would you use them in a game?' I think you could probably only have their followers in most cases. Actual gods aren't generally just walking around.
Ao’s body was killed but he himself was not. Given that he is the overgod his being remained. Thus why he created the sea of falling stars after being split in half
Xauld Ah I see, my mistake I was under the impression they were the same. Although I’m still sure it was Ao and not Io who created the Sea of Fallen Stars
@@Jorphdan I suppose it's a conflict between the creators of the setting and wotc then with one wanting it to be its own separate thing and the other wanting one to just be one realm of many in their connected dnd multiverse.
Corrections: -there are 3 platinum dragons (Lendys, Timara, and Bahamut though only Bahamut has wings) -the 5 heads of Tiamat do not fight each other according to lore (or at least no mention) -dragon mythology is way different than the common lore explaining discrepancies -Timat is considered a devil not a demon (3e lore)

@Jorphdan I think asgorath threw the moon to the toril during her fight with the chaos primordial after failing to kill it, the chaos primordial cut her into two
Running 2 "Tyranny of Dragons" campaigns atm. they are super fun! The introduction to it is so bombastic, love it.
Yes! Happy Gaming :D
Always love your videos Jorphden, watched every one, I'm always happy to see new D&D lore, especially forgotten realms!
hooray! :D Thanks for watching!
never played much dnd but i've been really into bg3 lately and planning to play as a cleric of tiamat so this helps a lot, thank you!
Hear Tiamat's name
My first thought: Fate/Grand Order Incarnation of Tiamat
my DM didn't mind my cleric to be a Life Cleric under Tiamat since in mythology she was a mother of a lot of gods
Finally! I’ve been waiting since the end of your deities videos for this!
Long wait! Sorry but it's here now :D
I was debating on having Tiamat be a big part of my upcoming campaign. I for sure want to have her be a big part of the upcoming campaign I am making!
Tiamat always reminds me of the Saturday Morning Cartoon of D&D.
Your videos are amazing. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much!
I swear to god I thought you said "Primordial gnome, the king of terror"
5:58 Glad I'm not the only one who hears "devil-dragon" and thinks of The Flight of Dragons =)
Ive been waiting all my dnd life for this
😲
Great vid, would love more videos on specific gods like this one!
Like these?
th-cam.com/play/PLJqE7QBvDyc-8EjJ59IcQC_weaD_TWdXr.html
Edit: Oh right totally forgot about those!
Are there more videos on deitys that you can meet in wizards of the coast adventures? Like the storms king?
The easy answer anytime gods do anything out of consequential time - such as the Asgorath issue above - is to assume that mythological shenanigans occur in "Godtime", when everything kind of happens at once, or at least without the intimate connection to framework of causality that "Human Time" is experienced in.
While I assume you did already (if you did I couldn't find it), and if you didn't I suggest that you make a video on all of the dragon species which will probably take multiple videos. As I haven't seen anyone go into detail on the lesser known dragons like the shadow dragon, purple dragon, admanatine dragon, etc.
Dragons are on my list for sure. I haven't made a video covering them yet!
I was doing something else entirely with this playing in the background.
"Wait, is someone making a paladin of Muhammed?"
Could Tiamat be seen as Takhisis from Dragonlance?
Absolutely, as well as Bahamut being a mirror for Paladine
They look the same but their personalities are different.
Takhisis and Paladine ARE Tiamat and Bahamut respectively, just that plane's particular versions of these deities.
I always felt that Bahamut was in Game of Thrones that would be Jon Snow's summoning😂😂😂
I don't know how the hell you pieced all this together but this is a great video
Thanks! Lots of reading O.o
(Hobo walks up to me asking for change)
(fall to my knees) OH GREAT BAHAMUT! GIVE ME YOUR GUIDANCE!....
(Hobo runs the other direction)
I'm running The Rise of Tiamat right now and we're going to reach the finale, a fight against Tiamat, in just a couple weeks!
sweet!
1:44 the attack was cast and it took until after his death to hit
My group did just barely prevent her return in Rise of Tiamat thanks to our Cleric's Divine Intervention and are Bard's Wish. Our group was level 19 going into that final battle and our DM had a custom-made Tiamat stat block that would have seriously f***** our s*** up had we not stopped her rise. I feel kind of bad we didn't allow our DM to use his giant five-headed dragon mini or his custom stat block, yet also relieved at the same time.
Ah yes the gigantic fish and the mother of all creation are now just king and queen dragons.
@@Jorphdan no prob :)
White Dragon head be like: Why the heck are you guys so complicated? JUST KILL EVERYTHING!!!!
Where did you find the info of Tiamat’s fortress? Would love to find something like that maps and lore of the 9 hells. Any books out there like that?
Everyone forgets that in one version of the story, Io was cut in THREE pieces, and they became THREE sibling dragon gods. Why does everyone forget that forgotten realms is not the ONLY cannon D&D setting, plus forgotten breaks established dragon lore.
Ho is the other one ?
@@darksecret1826 ?
@@evanlambert1438 you don't know? He was one of the first edition dragon gods! (No, IO was introduced in 2E) And I mean dragon, not lung gods like star, sun, moon, and the great one are. Those guys aren't literal star dragons, but that's their name.
Evan Lambert it’s Null, the dragon god of death, also the hottest god in my opinion
@@linkn5509 no, it's NOT null, he was made later editions and over rated. He was NOT from 1e.
Tiamat seems to get her draconic hide beaten a lot.
Tiamat is the goddess Tarkeisis on the world of Krynn (Dragon Lance).
Great video as always mate, and I realised one of the pics of bahamut you used is from gbf
thanks :D
Was the thumbnail updated recently? That art looks like it is from Fizban's Treasury or the Forgotten Realms MTG set.
Thumbnail was updated yep!
I think that the story of Bahamut and Tiamat’s creation took place on Abeir, which was after Toril as we know it was created. The reason for this is due to the existence of Dragonborn. Which according to Mr Rhexx, did not appear on Toril until after the Spellplague.
I have an idea: Asgorath dislodged the cosmic body that would eventually create the Sea of Fallen Stars during the battle, but it took a while to reach Toril
this is helpful to know especially to those of us homebrewing.
Nice video I always love these
It would be interesting to see Bahamat with five heads as well.
3:39 I think the silver dragon looks more like the white dragon and the white dragon looks more like the silver dragon
Have you ever done a video on certain Wars, like the war of the giants and dragons?
I have... it's an early one... trying to remember the title.
I didn't title my videos as well early on.
@@Jorphdan thanks, I'll try to look it up
Ever done a video covering the sharn and the phaerimm?
I haven't done a video specifically on the Sharn, or Phaerimm. But I talk about the Phaerimm in this Netheril video.
th-cam.com/video/4sG2jxqMsQY/w-d-xo.html
On Krinn, Bahaumat is known as Draco Paladine.
I'm here early i love this channel, thanks for your hard work
Thanks :D
I am about start running Tyranny of Dragons on Roll20. This is helpful.
Me and my friends literally just completed The Rise of Tiamat today
Sweet!!
Maybe Asgorath threw the moon from a great distance away and then teleported to Toril and had their fight with the King of Terror before the moon got there
I recall reading somewhere that there are other platinum dragons, not just Bahamut
Possibly, feels weird he's the only one. I'd love to read the source!
WHERE CAN I GET A FULL MAP OF TORIL? Not just The Sword Coast, but the whole planet.
this Reddit post might help :D
www.reddit.com/r/Forgotten_Realms/comments/akhj1b/does_anyone_have_a_high_resolution_map_of_faerun/ef4uqx6/
There are actually two other platinum dragons. Lendys and Tamara, this is 2ed ed lore, but it is still probably canonical.
I know video been out for awhile but I recently started playing D&D love all your lore videos just wanted to know if followers of Bahamut had a time to pray to him for spells as I'm playing a dragonborn paladin?
I'm not sure if there's a specific time to pray. Choose a time and work it into your backstory :)
Thanks so much for watching!
@@Jorphdan thanks for the reply keep up the good videos
hey Jorphdan can you do Zuggtmoy the fungus queen?
She's my favorite :) Not sure what extra info I can find, covered her a bit in the Demon Lords video. But I'll add her to the list and see what I can dig up!
@@Jorphdan k cool
@@Jorphdan hey word of advice if you have trouble finding a whole lot of info consider paring her with another demon we know little about like Juiblix ( i think that how that's spelled?)
just a thought
It could be Io returning to the "Astral Sea", while Io's remnants were converted into new life🤔
-Double D
The King and Queen of the Deities.
I was just thinking 'The two dragon gods are awesome but how the hell would you use them in a game?' I think you could probably only have their followers in most cases. Actual gods aren't generally just walking around.
The 5e supplement Rise of Tiamat makes you fight Tiamat if you don't stop her being summoned
Ao’s body was killed but he himself was not. Given that he is the overgod his being remained. Thus why he created the sea of falling stars after being split in half
Do you mean IO?
ScottNetherstone In most sources he is referred to as Ao but yes
Ao, the overgod, and Io, the former dragon god, are different entities.
@@connerr.7865 Ya AO and IO are different mang
Xauld Ah I see, my mistake I was under the impression they were the same. Although I’m still sure it was Ao and not Io who created the Sea of Fallen Stars
I wonder if the Tiamat of the forgotten realms is Takhisis from Dragonlance just known by the residents of that realm by a different name
WotC says that is the case, they are the same. The creators of Dragonlance say Tiamat is not Takhisis.
@@Jorphdan I suppose it's a conflict between the creators of the setting and wotc then with one wanting it to be its own separate thing and the other wanting one to just be one realm of many in their connected dnd multiverse.
Well funny you're not the only God dragons in this universe
You forgot to touch on the third sibling that tiamat ate
Richard Hicks pretty sure Tiamat didn’t eat Null
Any tips for pc that has rock that can summon Tiamat. Nobody else in camping than I and dm know about this.
For more info we are lvl 6 and I am lvl 6 draconic sorcerer dragonborn. This was oneshot that is based on same world where our next campaign starts.
So is Bahamut the old man that talks the Bhal spawn in Baldur's Gate?
Corrections:
-there are 3 platinum dragons (Lendys, Timara, and Bahamut though only Bahamut has wings)
-the 5 heads of Tiamat do not fight each other according to lore (or at least no mention)
-dragon mythology is way different than the common lore explaining discrepancies
-Timat is considered a devil not a demon (3e lore)
Tiamat in my eyes and my own opinion pure good not evil.
I hate how everyone making all dragons evil. Well 90%. They are just as good to
@@DragonProtector Tiamat in DnD is evil. She can be whatever you want in your world but in official DnD lore, she is an evil dragon who lives in Avernus who is friends with Asmodeus with her own devils call abishai.
